A new archlinux modular livecd

godane wrote:
Arch-live is a modular live cd/usb system based on a slax/zenlive like modular design. The goal of the project is to make a live system that will be easier to update then the current arch live system. The current live system are one big squashfs file with 2 or 3 smaller files for some change files. This is not a good modular design since you can't add a program without compressing the whole system again.
I also want the arch kernel to be used but the initrd/initrramfs needs to be a ext2 gzip file for the linux-live scripts to work. Ext2 is not build-in the kernel so the only way to do it is somehow make the arch initramfs load the arch-live initramfs has root filesystem. So if someone can help with me making the linux-live scripts more arch initramfs compatible that would be great.

Main update forum post:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=43892
I'm posting it here too cause I think newbies will like the modular livecd more.
Here is a list of programs in arch-live:
office:
* abiword
* epdfview (pdf viewer)
* xchm (xchm viewer)
multimedia:
* Asunder ( a cd ripper)
* Avidemux (a simple video editor and encoder)
* audacious (A music player)
* brasero (a cd burner)
* gtkpod (to add music and video to you ipod or copy them from you ipod to hard drive)
* gnome-mplayer (a front-end to mplayer)
* miro (The free and open source internet TV platform)
graphics:
* comix (a comic book viewer)
* GIMP (a photo editor)
* gThumb ( a photo viewer)
development:
* geany (A fast and lightweight IDE)
* kompozer (a web page designer)
network:
* transmission & deluge (both bittorrent app)
* gftp (A multithreaded ftp client for X windows)
* firefox (web browser)
* thunderbird (email client)
* pidgin (IM client)
* urlgfe (download manager)
* wicd (wired and wireless configuration  gui)
others:
* isomaster ( a iso editor)
* catfish (a gui search tool)
* VirtualBox (Powerful x86 virtualization for enterprise as well as home use)
The iso is update to 20080312. There is a module to update it to 20080312 cause some of the packages didn't get installed for 20080312 iso.
I hope this helps people get more interest in the project.

  • New to Modular programming

    Hi,
    I am very new to modular programming.
    Please can any one explain me the diff between the dialog programming and modular programming.
    I need to create a transaction which will give a screen to user to enter the threshold value . that value will be stored in one custom table .
    if the user executes the transaction again the new value should override the old value.
    Please can any one explain me the step by step procedure to create the screen asking the user to enter the value
    it should be
    Enter the threshold value : -
    Enter
    I know it is very simple question .
    Full points will be awarded.
    regards
    paveee..

    hi
    dialog programming and modular programming are the same thing...
    Programming an Application
    ABAP/4 Programs can be report or dialog programs.
    Reports:
    As you have previously explored, a report is a program that typically reads and analyzes data in database tables without changing the database.
    Dialog Programs:
    A dialog program allows you to work interactively with the system and to change the contents of the database tables. Each dialog program has a certain sequence of screens that are processed by the system one after the other.
    From the view of a user, a dialog step consists of receiving a screen for entering data, then after the users clicks a button or selects a menu entry, processing is started. From the view of the SAP system, the screen is prepared and sent. After this, the user receives it and fills it out. Then the system analyzes and processes the data contained on the screen after receiving it from the user.
    A dialog program must offer:
    a user-friendly user interface
    format and consistency checks for the data entered by the user
    easy correction of input errors
    access to data by storing it in the database.
    ABAP/4 offers a variety of tools and language elements to meet the requirements for creating and running dialog programs.
    As per your req..
    Go to se80.. select function group enter any suitable name.
    here you would have to create a screen. Here you specify the field as per ur req.. define the screen field as work area- field name...
    Then you would have to code for the PAI and PBO of your requirement...
    Hope this solves ur problem...
    <b>do reward if useful....</b>
    regards

  • New ArchLinux background

    Kudos to the designer of the new background.
    It signifies the nuclear generation of arch linux from small beginnings, ever growing, even beyond the confines of the desktop display, with input from others in its growth.  Inclusion of the pov-ray image is indicative of the recognition of support from users and is a fine background image of its own.
    Appreciate the new menu item for arch linux as well!

  • ArchLinux Based LiveCD for Gaming

    The project live.linuX-gamers.net was founded with the idea to present Linux games at the Linuxtag  exhibition in a novel way. A collection of games should be shown to directly run from DVD without the user in need to know about Linux or care about his system. After some intense brainstorming sessions the team decided to create and publish this DVD as a live distribution project. Thus an additional and very difficult problem had to be solved: The dvd should run on every x86 PC out there.
    At the very beginning the team was split up into two groups. The first group was meant to create a live-dvd based on any existing live distribution and to include games appropriate for younger players. The second group should create a live distribution from scratch, designed for high performance 3d games.
    Unfortunately the first team dedicated to the family suited games failed in finding a good live distribution which could be taken to create a base system fitting our ideas. But luckily the second team was successful. They created a livedvd based on ArchLinux.

    Wasn't this project previously based on Gentoo? Or what it always based on Arch?
    Personally, I couldn't imagine running a live CD/DVD and playing games, you'll probably need 8gigs of Ram and an Intel Extreme processor.
    Cheers,
    molom
    There was a project based off of gentoo back in the day called Gentoo Games.  I'm almost certain Linux-Gamers Live is an entirely different effort.

    This is great, but I think you should host the image on other place, it's kind of slow. I also think "Archlinux" is a bit of redundant.

  • New archlinux .no mirror

    Just finished rebuilding my mirror, and as there is a lack of mirrors here in norway, id like to share mine with you all. Its a fast connection (100Mbit), though it will be moved to a 2gbit pipe this fall.
    http://mirror.djzradio.net is the adress.
    UPDATE: Now offering ftp as well
    ftp://mirror.djzradio.net
    Current, extra, testing, unstable and community is mirrored. Its synced several times a day, so it should be quite updated.
    Now, please help me test it, and report any errors. It uses a custom script for syncing (as the rsync.archlinux.org downloads are capped at 100KB/s or something), so there is a slim chance of bugs.
    Enjoy!

    Ok, so i discovered a horrible bug Fixed now anyhow.
    So, sorry to anyone using the mirror, it hsould work 100% now

    This advice will actually be obsolete come this time tomorrow, as KDE 4.6 no longer uses hal.  You could try it out for troubleshooting; just remember to remove hal after the 4.6 upgrade.
    You may still need hal; some programs still depend on it.

  • No GRUB menu when booting from USB stick with new archlinux

    Hi,
    I want to try archlinux but I do not have a full backup of my current system right now, such that I do not dare to install archlinux on it. I decided to install it on a USB drive and followed the Beginners Guide considering the hints for installations on USB sticks.
    The first issue that I had was that I was not able to to install gurb and it complained that no boot partition was available. I started from scratch again but this time choose the partition type EF02  (bios boot partition) instead of the default 0700 (I only have one partition on the stick). This time everything went fine until I rebooted from the USB stick. Instead of a grub menu I got:
    GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB
    and nothing happened.
    I booted again from the boot cd with archlinux and did the following to examine the grub installation again:
    mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt
    arch-chroot /mnt /bin/bash
    grub-install --recheck --boot-directory=/boot /dev/sdb
    >Installation finished. No error reported.
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
    >Generating grub.cfg
    >Found linux image: /boot/vmlinux-linux
    >Found linux image: /boot/initramfs-linux.img
    > WARNING: Failed to connect to lvmetad: No such file or directory. Falling back to internal scanning.
    > No volume groups found
    >Found LMDE MATE Edition (1) on /dev/sda1
    >done
    I don't know what the grub-mkconfig output should look like...
    Do you have any idea how I can fix this?
    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to Arch!
    EF02 is definitely not the type code you want. That is used for a small partition with no file system which grub needs on GPT disks because it cannot fit into the space on disk. You don't install anything into it and it is 1-2MB.
    Perhaps https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Usb_installation would help?

  • New archlinux installation working on native but not on VMWare.

    Hello.
    So basically, I installed Arch on a USB HDD. I did two partitions : One NTFS of 400gb, and one of Ext4 of 100gb.
    I installed Arch using the x86 live-cd, and everything worked well, I can perfectly boot on it.
    But here's the problem : I want to use it using VMware. I created a "virtual" machine using a physical disc, and no matter what, it won't boot.
    "Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/disk/by-uuid/loluuid ...
    Root device '/dev/disk/by-uuid/loluuid' doesn't exist. Attempting to create it.
    ERROR: Unable to determine major/minor number of root device '/dev/disk/by-uuid/loluuid'."
    I supposed it comes from some USB driver isn't loaded or something, but I can't figure out what to do.
    Is there anything I can do so I can use it on VMWare ? I really need to use the bridged internet.
    Thanks already,
    cyb.

  • How to create ArchLinux install CD (with new kernel+extra tools)?

    I am planning to buy a HP nx6325 notebook. Unfortunately, it has some ACPI issues (thermal) which I think are solved in the git kernel version (they're not even in 2.6.20.1 I think). The problem is quite serious as it seems to be causing thermal problems.
    I'd like to create a new ArchLinux install CD with the latest (git) kernel + some extra packages. I plan to backup the entire HDD (100GB) over network and I need something efficient to read NTFS partitions (=ntfsclone)
    Unfortunately, the default ArchLinux install CD does not have this package. (as a request: maybe the ArchLinux install CD could also serve as a rescue Live CD.)
    I found the "archboot" package - apparently, creating an install CD is straight-forward. I have looked for documentation on how to
    * add tools to the ArchLinux install CD (available directly, without install) - I'd like to add "ntfsclone"+dependencies
    * change the kernel (using archboot)
    * (for the future) add packages available for install
    I couldn't find anything. Does anybody know where I could find such information?
    Many thanks.

    The up-to-date versions of both squashfs and unionfs can no longer be built as external modules - they exist only as kernel patches. Unionfs will be merged in to vanilla at some point (it just made it into -mm last month), but that won't be for another while - at the moment, it's looking like 2.6.22 or after.

  • HowTo install archlinux to a far away server?

    HowTo install archlinux to a far away server?
    or what about Archbootstrap?
    I have a server far away from me with software raid on it.
    It is running a different distro and i want to install archlinux on it.
    I was thinging to break the sw raid and use something like archbootstrap.
    I could install archlinux to one hard disk, fix the network and then
    add a new grub entry and reboot. Then i could rebuild the sf raid and configure
    my new archlinux server as i want.
    I've tried archbootstrap to my PC first and try to install archlinux to a different partition
    (same logic to want i need to do). I found some trouble, I even hack a little the script
    to fix some initial problems but i cant find a way to run it correctly.
    Is there another way? Can someone point me to a direction?
    PS: i've already looked up the forum and wiki - couldnt find anything useful (yet).

    With pacman-static from the French mirror and small fixes worked perfectly
    Unfortunately i couldnt find an official pacman-static on ftp.archlinux.org
    I 've tried to create a pacman-static from the source of pacman - but my efforts werent successful
    But in the end i was able to do what i really wanted with one way or another.

  • Schwag: archlinux lanyard

    Hi
    I have lots of money to burn and I would like to spend it all on new archlinux lanyard, because i need one bad for my keys
    Would it be possible to have it in schwag section of archlinux?
    Maybe somewhere like before Christmas?
    If not I'll default to ubuntu lanyard ( https://usshop.ubuntu.com/product.php?c … 09%2056000 ) , because I want to have nice linux-support-ish one. But still, I would like to send my monies to archlinux, and having archlinux lanyard on my keys would be like totally sweet.
    Let me know if arch lanyard would come to schwag section soon. I think there would be more people interested in it since lanyard is kinda practical thingy.
