A new Mac shipping with OS X Lion will not accept OS X Snow Leopard

Hi Fans,
I''m back again to report on my 2.5hr campaign to get Snow Leopard back.
I have of course no DVD drive on the Macbook Air.
So, I created a restore disk from my Mini, to an external drive.
Loooks good...
Boot Air, kernel panic. The Snow Leopard DVD is too old.
Error is:
You can't use this version of the application Install Mac OS X.app with this version of Mac OS X.
You have Install Mac OS X.app 23.1.
So, I will call apple apparently tomorrow and ask if there is a possibility for a later version DVD or a USB I can get.
I might add that if you have problems, apple prefer that you email them here:
http://www.apple.com/feedback
Other than that, a little rant here could help...
The experience I've had is pratically software entrapment, Apple just about closed the doors on software choice.

Thanks, yes I see the point, I will eventually get some 'feedback' and hope that I can survive the shortcomings...
I wonder if anyone knows if it is possible at all? To run Snow Leopard on the New Macbook Airs, i7 etc.
If it is... I will call and wait to talk to an Apple Expert...
What's interesting is Progress has become a relative concept, whereas before, Progress really mean't progress.
I think we got all excited over a rather fluffy domestic cat...
OS X Mr Snuggles?
Actually, the next version was probably the Sabre Tooth, but as we know, that cat is extinct.
I am trying to keep up good spirits by lightening up this 50/50 release.

  • My Mac mini with 10.6.8 will not stay asleep.

My Mac mini with 10.6.8 will not stay asleep when I click sleep or use the key command. It wakes up immediately. But when I leave it go to sleep on it's own (Energy Saver) it stays asleep. I've set it at approx. 8min. Is their any fix so it will stay asleep from the comand?
Thanks for the suggestion. Didn't figure out what the probelm was, butin disconnecting every thiing and putting it bck it,s working now.

Just a suggestion: In System Preferences, in Energy Saver, under the Power Adapter tab, if "wake for network access" is checked try unchecking it. Probably isn't what the problem is, but worth a try.

  • When starting up after a erase/reinstall of Mac OS X 10.6 it will not accept any of my passwords/names

when starting up after a erase/reinstall of Mac OS X 10.6 it will not accept any of my passwords/names, I had just entered my info and clicked on "continue", the cube began to turn and froze, a translucent screen came over the whole window and request that I restart the computer, after doing so, I got the start up sound and a message saying that OS X was starting up and then the sign in window, but when I entered my info it kept shaking/rejecting it, only thing I can think is that could I have possibly entered my password wrong twice, don't know, I'm still scratching my head.

Do it again, I'm afraid. Be sure you set up the initial admin account with a proper password you can remember - all lowercase letters and numbers. No special characters or spaces except for the "_" underline character.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Are new Macs shipping with Mountain Lion? Everything on the website suggests yes, but CS told me no and I had to upgrade my brand new MacBook Air manually.

Does "Included Software" not mean "this is the software you will receive when you buy this Mac"?

    Ahh OK.
Since Mountain Lion is so new, there may be a some units still in the supply chain that are still shipping with Lion.
Are you near an Apple Store?  If you purchase there you'll be more certain about what you're getting.
Or if you order from the online store but do it by telephone (800-692-7753) you can express your concern about getting Mountain Lion.

  • As soon as Lion is released, will new Macs ship with it?

I'm planning to get a new Mac for college this fall. I wanted to wait until Lion is released to get it. I just wanted to be sure that as soon as Lion is released that the Macs will ship with it preinstalled. Does anyone have any information on this or know the answer?

Apple's press release on Monday or Tuesday at the WWDC said this:
"The Mac OS X Lion Up-To-Date upgrade is available at no additional charge via the Mac App Store to all customers who purchased a qualifying new Mac system from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller on or after June 6, 2011. Users must request their Up-To-Date upgrade within 30 days of purchase of their Mac computer. Customers who purchase a qualifying Mac between June 6, 2011 and the date when Lion is available in the Mac App Store will have 30 days from Lion s official release date to make a request."
It's likely that all Macs shipped from the factory on or after the official release date of Lion will have it preinstalled. But there will probably be a limited amount of store stock for a while after that date that was shipped to stores earlier and will come with Snow Leopard installed. Buyers of those machines who request Lion within 30 days of their purchases should get it for free according to the above, though we don't know yet exactly what the mechanics will be.

  • Are new Macs shipping with Snow Leopard?

If I order a new iMac today through the Apple store will it come with OSX 10.5 or 10.6 installed?
The Apple store says the iMac will ship with OSX 10.5 but they show a picture of the OSX 10.6 box set...
(I'd like to still get one with Leopard if I can)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
PPP connections generally are done by dialup modem. Macs presently do not have built-in modems, though a USB modem is available to them from Apple, and some other vendors which do work with Mac OS X 10.6.
Any Mac though that can run Mac OS X 10.6, can also run any version of Windows. See the virtualization options here*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#WINTEL
Boot Camp is included with 10.6.
By the way, MAC is an acronym for Media Access Control, a network naming convention. Mac is shorthand for Macintosh, the operating system and the machines made by Apple computer that run the operating system in question.
If you have further questions about Boot Camp or other virtualization see the Boot Camp category, and pick up of the forums inside of it at its header to be able to post your own topic:

  • As a user, Mountain Lion will not accept admin username

I was trying to install FireFox after download. When moving the firefox icon to the Applications folder a dialogue came up asking for an admin name & password.
It would NOT ACCEPT the admin name & password although I use the same name & password to get into the admin account - and THAT WORKS!!!?????!!!!
    What's going on?
    Mike.

I've been able to find my own answer to this one..........
First of all - when I log on to the administrator account I use the short admin name "Mike" and the correct password, and all is OK, I get into the admin account.
BUT: When logged into my user account and a pop-up window asks for an admin name and password (like when I'm trying to install new s/w) the short name is not accepted!
If I enter the long admin username and the correct password, IT ALL WORKS OK!!
This is different behaviour from pevious versions of OSX. WHAT IS GOING ON?????
    Mike.

  • 1.42 Mac Mini with External Boot (HFS) will not Load Leopard

The Mac Mini will restart to start the loading from the DVD. The drive will spin up and will act like it is going to work then I get the wonderful "grey screen of death" telling me to power up the mac again. I have tried shutting down all other external drives but the one I need to install on. Even though I know the dive in the mini is bad I tried to run with only it and boot from the DVD and that didnt work either. Any help is greatly appreciated. I am not touching the MacBook till I see that this will work. Very dissappointed so far. Have never had an issue with upgrades from Apple before.
I have check my software update.. completely up to date. I have scoured the downloads for any firmware updates and the few I have found say I am not eligible for that update.

I disconnexted all drives and externals. Then tried again. That seemed to help. Have new issues which I am getting ready to post.

  • I use a website for my job, and now that I have downloaded the new version of firefox my company website will not accept my password. I have changed to a new password, but it still will not let me in. I can still gain access to site using Safari.

How can I use the new Firefox to access nwapeople.com?

    Well, two thoughts.
The battery has completely discharged and will take overnight to recharge, so don't expect much in an hour.
The battery has deep discharged and is now dead. It will never recharge and should be replaced.
If your iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad is Broken
Apple does not fix iDevices. Instead they exchange yours for a refurbished or new replacement depending upon the age of your device and refurbished inventories. On rare occasions when there are no longer refurbished units for your older model, they may replace it with the next newer model.
You may take your device to an Apple retailer for help or you may call Customer Service and arrange to send your device to Apple:

There are third-party firms that do repairs on iDevices, and there are places where you can order parts to DIY if you feel up to the task. Start with Google to search for these.
The flat fee for a battery exchange is, I believe, $99.00 USD.

  • I am not having problems with wifi but ipad will not accept my password in the secure mode. anyone else having the same problem?

I am having problems with the Ipad accepting my password in the secure mode in Wifi. I can get into wifi when the secure mode is off. This only started when I downloaded the lastest update for the Ipad. Anyone else having the same problems?  I have rebooted the Rotar and still doesn't work.

    I am not.
Which secure mode are you using with your wireless network - WEP or WPA?
Have you tried forgetting this network on your iPad, and/or resetting network settings on your iPad? Both will require rejoining the network and the latter will require rejoining every wi-fi network your iPad has access to when returning within range of the network.

  • My Mac OSX version 10.6.7 will not accept firefox 5.1

Every time I try to upload firefox 5.1 it continues to load but never finishes the process. It will not down load any version past 4.0.

Yes, I could play cd's. Through the process of my drive failing I learned that cd and dvd use separate lasers in the drive mechanism. The second sign I noticed was I could no longer burn dvd's, both iDVD and Toast would just stop doing anything before the disc was done. It got progressively worse to the point that as soon as I inserted ANY dvd it would spit it right back out. I hope that your problem isn't the drive failing, if it isnI hope your under warranty or Apple Care....I don't have any idea how much it would cost to have it replaced.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
