A new OS on an old system

As long as it meets the system requirements of the OS, you should be fine as long as there are drivers available for the hardware.

I was wondering if it's possible to install a brand spankin' new operating system on noticeably old hardware. I'M NOT ASKING IF IT'S PRACTICAL!! I just want to know if it's possible. For example, let's say I have a 2004 Dell Dimension Desktop, basic design, unmodified. Would I be able to install something like, say, a Windows 8 or 9 on it? I know this may seem like a silly question but some amazing discoveries have been made by asking seemingly silly questions. Thanks in advance.

  • Cannot delete Flash32_11_6_602_180.ocx from an old system disk

    Hi, I am running a Windows 8 64 bit system with the most current version of Flash installed, whatever that is, since I blindly accept whatever update Adobe sends to me.  My problem is that I cannot delete the Flash32_11_6_602_180.ocx file from an old system disk where I have deleted everything else in the Windows folder except the Flash32_11_6_602_180.ocx file.
    I have seen very similar posts by Krischu on November 27, 2013 "Cannot delete/remove Flash32_11_9_900_117.ocx" and by Gdstuart on January 22, 2014 "How to delete Flash32_11_9_900_170,ocx," and I have tried the "takeown" method and the FileASSASSIN method suggested by MikeM to both of those posts, but my Flash.ocx file just won't go away.
    I am the only user of this PC, and my user account describes me as an administrator, but I keep getting the "You need to provide admistrator permission to delete this file" when I try to delete it.
    Does anyone know how to delete this file without doing what Krischu did by loading a Ubuntu system?
    Thanks for any thoughts!

    Well Pat, I definitely do filter what Microsoft tries to load on my system, for example, their insistence in trying to sneak in Bing. Either way, I keep my system up to date constantly.
    Do you understand that the file I am dealing with is on a separate disk from my system disk? I don't see any way that the OS would automatically delete files that are not part of the current OS.
    I took the disks from my old PC and installed them inside of my new PC. The old system was Windows 7 32 bit, and my new system is Windows 8 64 bit.  As I said, there is only one user on my new system, me, and I am the administrator, so there is no "original Windows Administrator password" other than the one that I use every day. The only thing that I can think of is that the file is linked to my old admin user name from the W7 system, but even if that is the case, then why wouldn't  the "takeown" method give me ownership?

  • Reimaged System is Receiving Deployments Set for Its Old System Name

    Our organization (post-secondary) cascades computers from the student labs to the staff, and it's time for me to give the staff their "new" computers. This morning I reimaged a system (Dell Optiplex 380) that once belonged to a student lab in preparation
    for doing my first USMT. The computer was called TE-MHD11-03 when it was a student computer. It hadn't been booted since July-ish, and the new computer that replaced it is working fine using that name. The new name for the old system is PA-15cascade03, a completely
    new and unique name. But something strange happened. All of a sudden, it started installing an Adobe product, even though I've never added it (since imaging) to any collection related to our Adobe deployments. A co-worker found it sitting in the deployment
    collection for that software, and I can only assume that when it had the name TE-MHD11-03 it was added to that deployment collection.
    I can't be certain, but I believe some common identifier (MAC address, I'm guessing) has stayed behind in the SCCM database and is causing this. My problem is that I have a couple dozen more cascades to complete. I don't know what the fix is for this, and
    I'd kinda like to fix the issue for all of them at once, instead of one-at-a-time. Any suggestions?

    Ah, gotcha. The Adobe collection in question doesn't use any queries, just direct rules for membership.
    Another tech around here said as much (re: deleting the resource first), and I plan to change my procedure going forward. But it's too late now for the systems I've already replaced. Is there a way to search/delete those systems from the database without
    affecting the new systems that replaced them?
    I see in this article:
    Managing Conflicting Records for Configuration Manager Clients that we can manually choose to create a new record for duplicate hardware IDs. Unless I'm misunderstanding the purpose of that option, could we use that to fix this issue?

    You are allowed to have two working installations so you do not have to disable the original if you prefer to have a backup.  Otherwise, to disable you can just sign out thru the CC manager.

  • TS2755 With the new IOS7 how do i tell which phone number my text messaging is being sent to? on the old system the number used to be highlighted, now nothing is highlighted and i have ended up sending texts to my friends international numbers instead ???

    With IOS7 I am finding it impossible to (a) tell which number I am texting, when my contacts have multiple phone numbers, i dont know wether it si their home , monile/cell or international number... How do i differnetiate or know which number it is, especially when they text me from abrioad and i replying ...its not very clear adn has cost me extra in international charges

    Thanks Michael. Apologies for the slow reply I was away for a bit (holiday blitz at work and visiting family madness etc.etc.) back now, I set both options you requested to "never " and retried the CMS software with no change.
    I do have progress of a sort though, as a test I took a separate test PC and put a clean install of Win7 on and loaded up the CMS software (it worked perfectly) and then took the version of ole32.dll off that machine and put it onto the computer I had built
    for her (using Linux) and...
    got a new error code. Darn I was so sure I had found a clever solution this time lol.
    Anyway now when the CMS fails it gives me a similar error but the offending module is "ntdll.dll" sooo... I tried taking the "working" version of ntdll.dll from the test box and moving it over (making sure to back up the existing ones
    first so I could put them back if needed) to her new PC and the PC would not boot.
    It seems to want the original versions of a few Dynamic Link Libraries and if I could somehow give it those while not breaking Win7 it should theoretically work seeing as it no longer errors with ole32.dll.
    ntdll.dll however seems necessary for Win7 to boot.
    So what I am wondering now is:
    Is there some way to have both versions of the DLL file in the system32 folder (bypassing the "cannot have two files with the exact same name in the same folder" thing) or rename the original DLL's something else and somehow make the CMS look for
    the new named versions so the system has the updated DLL's it needs to boot/run and the CMS has the old ones it wants to run or is there someway to have a self contained install of the CMS, say on a USB flash drive and give it it's own E:/windows/system32/needed
    dll's  path to the files it needs?
    Willing to try any other options or settings you may have come up with as well.
    Thanks again for your reply and my apologies for not answering sooner.

  • Data import from old system to new system, key by raw16 column

    hi, experts,
    now, I have a new system, the system design is to use raw(16) column as key column in all database tables.
    of course, when new system goes live (in production), all new transaction records are written to new system database.
    when the new system inserts new records, it handles itself to avoid conflicts by value of the raw(16) key column
    I now face this issue:
    I need to import data from old system to new system, I use sys_guid() to fill up the raw(16) column in new system database.
    how can I avoid the conflict from value of raw(16) column between old system data and new system database data?
    the sql I write is very simple:
    insert into new_sys_table_a (key_column_raw_16, ..., ... )
    select sys_guid(), old_sys_col_a, old_sys_col_b
    from old_sys_table_a;

    Thanks for your quick response!!!!
    I understood - what you have mentioned for my question but i have  one clarification on your answer and one new questions to you.
    Clarification:
    My oldsystem is non-unicode system. As you said i will do system copy export method on old system(non-unicode) then i will use that  exports(non-unicode) to build new system.
    Here my clarification is:
    Will that exports(non-unicode) work while installing new system with unicode? or Will it give any problem?
    Question:
    1. will old system with oracle 9i exports work on new system with oracle 10g?

    Hi David ,
    If it is a retail version ,then you need to deactivate it and uninstall it as well from your old computer and then you can install it back on the new computer.
    If it a subscription based software ,then you just need to deactivate it and you can operate the same on your new computer by entering in your credentials .

  • Sandboxing old system disk on new machine?

    Hi,
    my question is a fairly simple one, but somewhat convoluted, although I'll try my best to word it clearly:
    I just bought an '09 MacPro and stuck in 3 extra 1TB HDD's. I partitioned the 4th drive in two sections of 500GB each. On one of these partitions I want to clone the system drive of my old '07 iMac, the other partition will be used for Bootcamp.
    I will use the iMac's HDD clone as an alternative boot disk, occasionally.
    I suspect that there are some iffy things on my iMac, since power-down used to be near-instantaneous but now takes almost 20 seconds. That happened just overnight, BTW. Not a gradual process as a result of accumulating bloat, I think.
    The one thing I want to avoid, is any sort of malware creeping into my new machine because I cloned my old system drive onto the new one. Is there any way in which I can "sandbox" the cloned boot disk and restrict that system from accessing/recognizing/affecting the other disks?
    I basically want to run them as two entirely separate systems, even if they use the same CPU/RAM/GPU.
    Any sort of input will be appreciated, thanks.
    PS: what is that F8 thing again, where you use the other computer as a target drive?

    There are likely no hardware drivers on the iMac clone configuration that will allow you to boot the newer Mac with.
    Clone as a archive to access files, but likely can't boot, almost positive of that fact.
    The only chance in heck is if the OS X you installed on the old Mac has the hardware drivers for the newer Mac. Say a 10.6.3 Snow Leopard retail disk for instance. Grey disks or factory installed OSX on the old Mac configuration? Forget it.
    I suspect that there are some iffy things on my iMac, since power-down used to be near-instantaneous but now takes almost 20 seconds. That happened just overnight, BTW. Not a gradual process as a result of accumulating bloat, I think.
    You can hold c boot the iMac off the 10.6 installer disk and simply install OS X over the installed verison, then immediatly Software Update. This replaces OS X only, not your files or programs, might cure your issue.
    Back up your user file folders (Music, pictures etc) to a external drive and disconnect before doing anything.
    If your still having issues with the iMac after resinstalling OS X, if your hard drive has enough room (full hard drives slow down a machine, look in Activity monitor) you can create a new user and log into that and see if your problems magically disappear.
    You can also get a Firewire cable and adapters (Firewire 800 to 400) hook the two Mac's together and T boot the iMac's hard drive to the desktop of the newer Mac, run a ClamXav scan, grab choice files and so forth, no need for a clone which you likely can't boot anyway.
    The one thing I want to avoid, is any sort of malware creeping into my new machine because I cloned my old system drive onto the new one. Is there any way in which I can "sandbox" the cloned boot disk and restrict that system from accessing/recognizing/affecting the other disks?
    Well you likely can't clone as it won't boot anyway. So since your not running the OS on the clone on your new machine, code can't execute if it's on there.
    Far as I know there are no "hopping" malware for OS X that runs simply by connecting a infected media. OS X warns you of any new programs it hasn't seen previously before allowing it to run.
    If you T boot and jsut extract your choice files, run a ClamXav scan, your likely going to be just fine.
    Just don't transfer the old programs from the old Mac and run them on your newer machine.
    I basically want to run them as two entirely separate systems, even if they use the same CPU/RAM/GPU.
    But differnet hardware and no hardware drivers, so I'm almost positive it won't work at all.
    PS: what is that F8 thing again, where you use the other computer as a target drive?
    Hold T and boot the Mac you want's hard drive to appear on the desktop of the other, you need Firewire cable and adpater if one is one 800 and the other is 400. (defaults to 400 speeds.)
    Good Luck.

  • Porting an old system to a new one

    I am working on a project which is in the maintainance stage. The current configuration being -->
    Currently my system is working on -->
    OS == RedHat 7
    Web Server ==Tomcat4
    DB ==Postgres 7.
    Tomcat ==jdk 1.3
    Struts ==1.0
    Java Classes ==jdk 1.4
    We are planning to port the system to -->
    OS ==CentOS 5
    Web Server == Tomcat5(because CentOS 5 works with Tomcat5 or above as per my knowledge)
    DB == Postgres 8
    The problem is there are many deprecated functions present which are giving a problem. Also according to my knowledge the newer versions of Tomcat do not support the lower jdk versions.
    It will be a lot of trouble to change deprecated functions because it is a huge project and I am a fresher with no previous working experience in java.
    Can you give me some tips/idea what problems can occur while porting the old system.

    The dropdown list is supposed to show #10 not #1....
    09-10-2008 (A) // #1
    10-10-2008 (B) // #2
    11-12-2008 (F)[2A][5P] // #10
    13-12-2008(G)[7P] // #14
    14-12-2008(D) // #15
    ummm .. ok... there are more operations which we have 2 perform on the above resultset...
    #1,#2,#5 these results are no longer used... i mean there are no further operations to be done... but should be displayed in the dropdown.
    But #10 and #14 these records are further used to fetch data from the DB..
    so depending on the value which is being displayed (selected = true) )in the dropdown list a query is fired .... to get details about the selected record. When the required operation are done ...
    #10 --> 11-12-2008 (F)[2A][5P] //( on 11 dec 2008 for shift F 2 employees were absent and five were present. )
    so these will be authenticated by senior employee and # 10 will be reduced to...
    #10 --> 11-12-2008 (F) // (employees authenticated. Now this becomes like record #1 , #2 and #15 which are not used but sholud be present in the dropdown )
    After this the control is again transferred to checkIn.jsp where the selected ie the current value being displayed should be #14..... and not #1 .
    But the value displayed is #1... BUT if we restart Tomcat for the first request for checkIn.jsp the correct record is displayed.. den it keeps on displaying #1
    All this is working properly in the older system... but if we try and run the same code on new system then it is giving problem.
