A new thought on Archiving

I have always used and advocated sharing to tape as the best means of preserving the iMovie projects which make up an iDVD.
It now occurs to me that I can buy about a dozen DVD-Rs for the price of a tape.
Is there a (hopefully freeware) utility that would take 16-20 GB of files and create a set of discs.
Does anyone do this?
I have travelled widely in Western Europe and also been to South America and am amazed that digital-8 tapes are about the only thing I've found cheapest in the UK, about 15 pounds for 5!

You can always do it manually and break up the project yourself onto several DVDs. Ya I know, not what you wanted, but I have not run across a free or cheap application to do this for your automatically.
Retrospect is kind of pricey although maybe not bad if you use it a lot. I do have a version of it that came bundled with something I bought. I only tried it out once to back up a folder of digital photos that was roughly 3gig (normally I backed up manually onto CDRs at the time). I found it to be slow and it used way more CDR blanks that if I had done it manually. Maybe newer versions are improved, but I haven't been inclined to invest any money in a newer version if that is the performance you get out of it. I still use Toast and do my backups manually.
One thing to keep in mind is that since DVD blanks have been known to go bad after a time, if your DVD archive of your movie projects are to be the only backups, you should make at least two sets. The advantage of tape, although now no longer the cheaper of the two (tape vs. DVDs) is that you can get a whole hour onto a tape (vs. about 20 minutes on a data DVD, but more importantly tapes rarely fail or if they do have the troubles you might lose a bit of footage, not the entire tape as you may with a DVD.
Perhaps you should consider another hard drive dedicated strictly to backing up and archiving iMovie work? Here in the USA, I see 160GB drives all the time now for about $30-$40 after rebate. I put together a 160GB external Firewire drive for under $100 US by doing this and picking up an Firewire enclosure. Then you can easily hook it up to the computer later and transfer that footage to another media when it comes available or gets cheaper such as dual layer DVDs or better yet when we finally get affordable Blu-Ray or DVD-HD drives on our computers and you can archive 20GB projects onto a single blank.
Best of luck,
Patrick

• Creating a new Infostructure in archiving for Object PM_ORDER

Hi Guru's,
The SAP standard infostructures used when archiving PM Orders do not include 'Order Type'. I have created a new Z infostructure and included the Order Type in the field catalog and new infostructure but it doesn't get populated at the point of archiving. Does anyone know why not ? or how I can fix this ?

Hi Ben,
Has your custom archive infostructure been activated? Also, the infostructure gets populated during the delete phase of the archiving process, not the write phase. Have you tried manually filling the structure? If so, what does the joblog show? Does the tablespace the infostructure is in have enough space?
These are some things to check.
Hope this helps.

• Forgot to 'Preserve New User' in Archive and Install

I archived and installed the other day and forgot to 'preserve new user' while doing it. Now when I log in, there is nothing anywhere on the desktop. No HD, no finder, no links to app's, just the blue background. I have no idea where to go from here, I've tried numerous ideas and nothing has worked. Including running DW, repairing permissions, repairing disk, reseting the Mac Mini, booting with no devices attached, even re-installing. Is there maybe a terminal command to move files to the desktop that can be used? I have so much important stuff, I really should have made a back up by now.
Thanks for helping.

• New Music Tuesday Archive

I know a lot of users like the New Music Tuesday playlist but don't save the playlists or don't realize they update every week. I have gone through the trouble of keeping an archive each week since I first discovered the playlist. Currently I am missing three playlists: I am missing July 29th playlist, October 21st playlist, and October 28th playlist. If you have these in a personal playlist please link them. Also if you have any playlists from before also please link them.

• Why is all my new mail in Archive not my Inbox & Activity Monitor

Three questions.
1. All new mail from ntlworld & gmail now automatically goes into Archive.
2. Why does the Activity Monitor state that I have nearly half a million email incoming
3. Why does email arrive WAY before on my iphone/ipad.. it takes ages for it to arrive on my laptop. Sometimes I have to log out and log in for it to appear

I've got exactly the same behavior with Yosemite, suddenly no new emails hit my inbox and everything goes in the Gmail (Tous les messages) folder. Looks like someone once again changed the behavior.
Does anyone has a clue on how to fix this?

• Any new thoughts on local sync for calendars

Any new ideas on how to achieve local sync for iOS devices under Mavericks? I am still not comfortable with using iCloud and would prefer to manage my data on my own. I am aware of options like setting up your own local wifi server and am intrigued by the 'devicesync' app on the app store. Anything else out there or do you know of anyone working on a solution to this 'feature'? Thanks and happy holidays to all.
Marc

Hi nbar, and thanks for your reply. Apologies in advance if it appears that I'm getting on my 'high horse', as the saying goes.
First off, I'm not a power user....I've got a very simple set up with a 4 year old MacBook Pro. When I do my work I do it on systems purpose-built for editing or graphics work. This gripe is strictly about how my personal devices function.
I have a couple of issues. The primary is ownership of my data. I simply do not trust Apple anymore. The ease with which services like Facebook or Google rewrite their licenseing agreements without, it seems, a thought to their end users, leads me to believe that given enough time Apple will begin mining any data that you or I store in iCloud. This is my data and Apple has no right to scan it or use it in any way whatsoever.
Secondly, I don't appreciate being pushed into a 'service' that I do not want. I don't need iCloud to do my business or to live my interconnected life. Besides, in this day and age, 5gb is pretty paltry in terms of storage; after that I get the privilege of paying a monthly fee for more space.
Third, committing to the cloud means that any interconnected device that I have will use up more bandwidth on my data plan. If I have three or four devices connected to the cloud then every time I download something from iTunes it uses up 3-4 times the original bandwidth as the file is spread across my devices.
Fourth, and most disappointing, Apple was not very candid about the loss of local sync when Mavericks was rolled out. True, in the developer or beta testing community this may have been perfectly clear but to us 'regular' end users there was no real warning. I find this most disheartening as I bought in to the Apple brand as the anti-corporate, anti-Microsoft, maverick (yes, I said Maverick ). This episode, for better of for worse, has soured me somewhat on the brand. And by the looks of it on-line and on these discussion groups, I'm not alone in this perception. This feels more like a blatant play for dollars and less about providing new feature sets to end users.
There are a lot of reasons why the cloud is good for some people and for certain types of activities. And I'm not naive enough to think that my data is perfectly safe and is not already floating out there somewhere. However, to the extent that I can, I simply want to be able to choose where my data goes and who I trust to handle it. Apple took away my cheese and I want it back!
Thanks again for the feedback. You've been very polite to read my rant. Have a great New Year.

• New report for Archiving data

Hi to all,
Can anybody kindly tell me how to solve the following:
Due to the huge volume of records in the table ZMES_SEQ_DETAIL it required to archive the data based on the Date on which the record was created, which is 18 months older in the table ZMES_SEQ_DETAIL.
Thanks in advance.
Regards
Simi

Hi,
SAP provides standard archive objects for standard tables. There is no archive object available to archive custom tables data (Z/Y tables). The option you have is to develop a custom archive object and related programs to archive data from the Z table.
Checkout the following link for more details on developing archiving solutions.
Hope this helps

• Horizontal line issue -- some new thoughts

Hello there.
Regarding the horizontal lines / waves issue, has anyone else noticed that the intensity of the problem varies with the position on screen? The problem is especially visible in the upper left corner of my screen, yet is almost non-existent in the lower right corner. From the upper-left to the lower-right corner, the problem degrades. This is true for both the "lines" issue and the "waves" appearing.
You can try yourself by setting your desktop background to "Tile" and using (part of) the Crankycat picture (you can download a cropped version at http://siteffects.be/maarten/powerbook.png).
On my machine, the waves problem is very visible in the light-blue "Sources" area of iTunes (i.e. left part of iTunes, so coincidentally in the "worst" part of the screen). When moving the iTunes window to the right, the problem eventually disappears.
On a sidenote, has anyone tried to use the Powerbook with Linux? I'm really wondering whether a completely different operating system would solve the problem. I've tried using Ubuntu live CD's (both stable version and new "Dapper" version), but they do not seem to work. In general, I have the impression that you need kernel 2.6.15, which is the only one supporting the latest Powerbook.

Hi Sebastian,
When using sRGB (not IEC61966-2.1), I do see what you observe, however it is not THAT apparent.
Except. If I increase the contrast of the screen one notch (CTRLOption+Apple.), the heavy lines/wavy lines is very obvious. But if you increase contrast two notches they go away completely. Interestingly, on my dispaly, if you chose Generic RGB, and increase the contrast one notch, the whole orange panel shows heavy banding.
You can reduce back the contrast with (CTRLoption+Apple,)
Yes, the bottom right is less of a problem than the top left. But I can just about perceive the horizontal banding.
The same cannot be said of the horizontal pixel lines in the lilac panel. These only disappear if I increase the contrast so much that the display looks terrible. (e.g. until the lilac become almost pure blue). And the problem is the same everywhere on the screen.

• Best way to archive RAW Images and keep JPG?

Hello everyone,
I have what I believe to be a fairly simple question. My iPhoto library, comprised mainly of RAW images, is taking up a majority of my MacBook's 500GB storage capacity, and I want to fix this. I want to keep all the photos in my library accessible on my mac, but they do not necessarily need to be in RAW format.
My thought:
1) Archive my entire iPhoto library in original format (RAW) to an external hard drive
2) Convert the MacBook's iPhoto library to JPG format, freeing up a considerable amount of space on my hard drive
My only concern is the safety of my original (RAW) library. The last thing I want to do is lose those minimally processed images. Is it safe/possible to export an entire library to an external hard drive? If I do that, will I be able to hook up that hard drive and view the images under iPhoto? Is there a simple way to convert an entire library to JPG? Is there a better way to accomplish my goal of freeing space?
Thanks in advance for any advice/help y'all can provide.
Best,
Steven

You won't be be "exporting" a library, just moving it:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
That's the Library with the Raws moved.
3. To view that Library: Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
There is no way to "convert" a library. The best you can do is export the images from the Library as Jpegs to folders in the Finder. Trash the Library. Make a new one. Then import the images from the folders. A lot of work, and a job that will need to be repeated as you add images.
This User Tip
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
It might be time to upgrade to Aperture.
With Aperture you can have your Library on the internal disk but store the Raws on the External. You'll still be able to view and share your images without the external connected if you choose to generate previews. While this is theoretically possible with iPhoto, it lacks the tools to manage the referenced images properly.

TD

• Suggestions for archiving an iPhoto library? (and more questions)

Ok, so here is my issue:
Over 12,000 photos
Over 65GB
New camera that doubles the average file size of most previous pics to ~3MB
I've thought about starting a new library and archiving the current one, but there is one thing I am scared of: having an old library sitting around and not getting progressively updated. The times I have had problems with my library have been when skipping between versions of iPhoto and the library essentially gets "combo" updated (not the program itself, but when it updates the library files as it often does).
I don't think I would like to access the library from an external. It was a mess when I did it with iTunes, and regardless of available space, I think a new library that doesn't have any left over data from when it was started in 2002-2003 would be a good idea.
With that out of the way:
What are your ideas?
What have you done for this?
Just in case there is a drastic change like Final Cut X, or it is dropped like iWeb/iDVD in 10 or 100 years in the future, how can I make a clean backup that does not rely on iPhoto? ("show package contents" is just messy as I have many modified and don't require the originals in those cases.).
Any thing else that I haven't thought of, or any sites you could point me to or personal experiences with this would be great. Thank you!

There are several different questions in there.
I've thought about starting a new library and archiving the current one, but there is one thing I am scared of: having an old library sitting around and not getting progressively updated.
Simple solution: keep progressively updating it? In other words, use it all the time. Move your existing Library to an external drive.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager
Think of it this way: You have a Master Library which contains everything and another which contains more current material.
I don't think I would like to access the library from an external. It was a mess when I did it with iTunes, and regardless of available space, I think a new library that doesn't have any left over data from when it was started in 2002-2003 would be a good idea.
There is no reason not to use an external as described above, This is also true of iTunes. I have no idea why you might regard it as a benefit not have data from 2002. It's much more convenient to have all the data in one Library.. If it was a mess when you did it with iTunes then respectfully I suggest that maybe you didn’t do it right . My iTunes Library runs to hundreds of gigs so it has to reside on externals, and does with no problems.
Getting Photos out of iPhoto is simple and safe: File -> Export. You can choose to export Masters. Or just current versions and so on.
Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.

• Issue with "Reimporting from Cameras /Camera Archives"

I'm testing to see if I can save disk storage space by archiving events that have the Original Media files deleted. I created a test project and event, and imported clips from a P2 card and from Final Cut Camera Archives. Once I placed some clips on the timeline, I quit FCPX and in the Finder I trashed the files from the Original Media folder. Then I re-opened FCPX and saw the usual red 'missing file' clips in the event browser and the timeline. I then selected the event with the missing file clips, went to the File menu to Import > Reimport from Camera /Archive command and found that it reimported the files from the P2 card, but didn't reimport the clips that came from the Camera Archives. When I retry, it says: "Nothing to Reimport - all of the selected clips have their original media in place or were not originally imported from a camera." When I try to select the clips individually, the Reimport from Camera /Archive command is grayed out. the clips were imported from the same Camera Archives, so I don't know why it doesn't find the Archives file to reimport? They are availble for FCPX to see, since I can see them mounted in the Import Window. The 2 Camera Archive files I used for the test clips came from 1. Canon 5D CF card to Camera Archive and 2. DVCPRO Tape to Camera Archive. I don't know if I'm missing something or is there a known bug with this feature? I haven't used the reimport feature until now. Thanks for any input on this.

Hi Tom,
maybe you're thinking of the "Relink Event Files" command? I tried that, and it takes you to a window that searches for files with the same name of the original files, which were deleted from the event to save space for archiving purposes. I thought the purpose of using the FCPX camera archiving was supposed to automatically find and reimport these original media files. Oh well, I guess my testing shows that I better not delete the original files if I want to restore the project at a later date. Too bad that it has to be stored twice - as camera archives and in the event (although I know you can use the duplicate project feature to create a new event for archiving that will eliminate media files not used in the final project).
