A new way to mess up iPhoto (and have a nervous brake down)

Occasionally I need to get into the Modified or Originals folder in the iPhoto Library. Usually it's because I mistakenly saved a Photoshop Elements .psd file to one of these folders by mistake or some other dumb thing. So I decided that it would be convenient to make aliases of these folders and place them outside the library. Great idea. Then I had another idea that it would also be convenient if the Modified and Originals folders were shown in the sidebar of the Finder window, so I set that up. No problem. But here's where it gets interesting, to say the least. I decided the names of these two sidebar references were not quite descriptive enough so I changed them to "iPhoto Modified" and "iPhoto Originals" thinking that a sidebar reference could be renamed like an alias without effecting the item it points to. Wrong. I changed the name of the original folders too. So guess what happened the next time I used iPhoto and clicked on a thumbnail of a photo. Big gray box with dashed lined for borders. Same for every photo in library. Web searches suggested the library was corrupted. Not really. Anyway, I finally figured it out, made the corrections to the folder names and every things is fine again. Shame on me for messing around like that but shame on the the Finder for allowing sidebar names to be edited without providing a warning of the consequences.

Rich:
Thanks for the self disclosure. FWIW here's how PSE should be used in conjunction with iPhoto:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Any way to export from iPhoto and have the file date be the photo date?

I can't deal with iPhoto any longer. I just imported photos from the last few days and they ended up being associated with some "Event" from Jul 19, 2007. So now I have an event that spans Jul 19, 2007 to Feb 21, 2009!!! I'd like to just display, sort, view all photos in my library by date (I am meticulous about dates on all my devices) but apparently that's not possible anymore. "Events" is the worse thing to ever happen to my photo library...
So I'd like to export them all and just use the Finder. It actually works the way I'd like. However there does not seem to be any way to export the photos so that the file creation or the file modification date is the actual date the photo was taken as shown in the information box in iPhoto. Does anyone know how to to this? Or is this just the iPhoto engineers screwing with people like me who have gotten disgusted with their product?
    Thanks!

Yes, I know what the Finder is... The cool thing is it actually does know about the contents of the file. For example it can display thumbnails of the images contained within.
Even better the files can be sorted any way you want, are not hidden in some odd proprietary package, can be backed up, restored at will and can easily be programmatically changed using AppleScript. The file system for an OS is generally bullet-proof and as such doesn't screw with dates like iPhoto did (the events stuff screwed with all our dates and has been a disaster for us and the 40,000 or so pictures we had in our library).
iPhoto has just gotten too modal, too bloated, and too proprietary while not providing the basics like a way for my wife and I to have a single library for all our photos. On the other hand using just the file system and some network storage this is easy.
For the recored most pros I consulted with have moved to the file system and Finder as their primary means of managing their photos. I'm just looking for an easy way to get my stuff out of iPhoto so I can do the same.

  • What is the best way to back up iPhoto and create disc space

what is the best way to back up iPhoto and then remove the iphoto folder from the mac book and onto the external apple time capsule

    Two different questions
the best qway to backup is to use TimeMachine or other automatic backjup program
However this does not allow you to reduce space since a backup need to be a copy of your existing library and as soond as you changge the library you no longer have a backup and sooner or later the photos will be gone form the bakcujp too
You need to run the iPhoto library on an external drive or had a complete library on and external drive and a smaller library on yoru internal drive using iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  to move photos between the two libraries
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • My Laptop crashed. I had a full backup on Carbonite so the iTunes folder is there and downloadable.  Is there any way just to import that and have iTunes on my new computer (Windows 7) recognize it?

My Laptop crashed. I had a full backup on Carbonite so the iTunes folder is there and downloadable.  Is there any way just to import that and have iTunes on my new computer (Windows 7) recognize it?

Nothing gets imported.  Simply restore the ENTIRE iTunes folder to the new/restored computer.
Download and install iTunes from Apple's website.
The first time iTunes is launched, assuming the ENTIRE iTunes folder is restored to the correct location, it will launch and be exactly as it was prior to the comptuer issues.  If for some reason this does not work, close iTunes, hold the SHIFT key while launching iTunes and a prompt will appear to choose or create a new iTunes library.  At this point simply point iTunes to the correct location for the existing iTunes library.

yeah the keynote they just did showed what appeared to be a new version of Aperture running on the Mac Pro so I've got a glimmer of hope they'll do some more updates in Dec.  If not there's always the feedback

  • I am unable to change location for editing photos.  I tried the advanced drop down menu in iPhoto and have 2 locations for editing-iphoto and aperture.  I want to add photoshop.  Can anyone help? Thanks.

i cannot change editing location from aperture to photoshop in iphoto.  i followed directions to advanced tab in iphoto and have 2 choices for editing photos-iphoto and aperture.  any suggestions on how to change the sites?  thanks.

Not sure why you would have Aperture there as it's not an editor.
To change, just select Aperture again, and this will give you the dialogue to change the choice.

i would like to put captions on my photos in iPhoto and have show up on apple tv during a slide show.. is this possible.. thanks

If you do not have it on disc, then download it, install it, and activate it with your serial numnber.  If you need to download it, if you purchased it online thru Adobe look for a link in your Adobe account online.  You can also download the trial version and activate it with your serial number...

  • Hello, my mac book air won't update. Every time i try it goes onto the purple starry screen and stays that way for hours, so i just have to shut it down. I have deleted a lot on my laptop so there is enough space, please help?

I believe that system has a hall sensor on it to detect when the lid is closed so it can put the system to sleep and/or disable the monitor so it can be used with an external monitor only. If the sensor is marginal or has a bad cable, it may intermittently cut the monitor on and off, and may likewise put the system to sleep. One way to check would be to plug in an external monitor and if the laptop's screen cuts off or doesn't show up, start using the trackpad and press on a non-typing key like the shift key. If the external display suddenly pops and becomes active while the laptop display remains black, it's probably a problem with the sensor or the cable/connection. You might be able to fool the sensor into kicking on and off by moving a magnet over it. It's located on the left had side of the base with the unit opened up, and right over the audio output plug.
I know of some people that put a small magnet right over the hall sensor's location so the laptop display turns off and they use the system with an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse. If fooling with magnets, make sure they're small and don't get them close to the hard drive because a strong magnet can wipe them out.
I don't know if this will help you much, but it might.

No I didn't even read through your post, to long.
You said that "No matter what program I try to install, as soon as the installer opens it crashes". Were you talking about the install for this/these 3D programs or ANY program? As it is worded it sounded like ANY program. That tells me there is a problem with your Mac, software or hardware.
Now you say others install programs, which is it. Programs other then the 3D ones install or no programs install?
Could simply be your Mac is to old to run these programs and the installer knows that. You never said what model or year Mac it is.

There seems theres no solution. Rang Apple telephone support and because the billing address is UK based the shipping address must be to. Ridiculous!

  • Best way to use BOTH iPhoto and Aperture?

I have been using iPhoto for 2 years and Aperture for one day! I'd like to continue using iPhoto for snapshots (where i can do minimal editing, tagging etc) but use Aperture when I need more robust management (editing hundreds of vacation photos and creating multi media slideshows).
What is the best way to do this?
Do I import everything into iPhoto and then import selected files / folders again into Aperture  - which would mean 2 copies on my hard drive of anything I import into Aperture. I rather not use that much hard drive space if there is a better option.
    Thanks for any advice.

You might want to take a look at this thread which address many of the same issues you're asking about here. In it I described how I made the switch from iPhoto to Aperture. It may be of some use to you.
Having bought Aperture, does iPhoto still have its uses?

  • Is there a way to just press ⌘ + S and have Pages save as .doc?

For all of my college document, they have to be saved as a .doc so that they work with the college computers.
Once I create a document in Pages, I save it and tick the box that says 'Save a copy as: Word Document' but then even after it has saved, the red dot to close the windows has the black dot in the centre to say it hasn't been saved.
Is there a way to stop this happening and once I have saved a document as a .doc once, can it be set to do it for the whole thing?
    I hope this makes sense,
    Sam

No, you can't use  Cmd + S for exporting a Pages document as a Word document. It is good that you save the Pages document in its native format first. If you tick a box after you have saved the document Pages thinks you have made a change and that is why you have the black dot again.
You should be able to assign a hot key to Export > Word. Mind that you don't use any hot key already in use. May I suggest you use somthing like Option + Control + s. The Control key isn't used much for hot keys on a Mac.
To do this follow the instructions here  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3957

Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

Try some of the fixes in Understanding upgrade nightmares*.  I'd be particularly inclined to blame third-party software, but obviously can't be sure that's the correct diagnosis so quickly!
