A Newb's Poor CPU Overclocking; RAM Timings?

First, my system specs:
Intel Pentium 4 Prescott 2.8GHz HTT w/ 800MHz FSB
Thermaltake Spark 7+ Xaser Edition A1715 CPU Cooler
MSI 865PE Neo2-FIS2R motherboard (BIOS ver. 3.8)
2x512MB Kingston PC3200 DDR SDRAM @ 400MHz
Maxtor 6Y120M0 120GB HDD 7200RPM SATA150 8MB cache
Built-by-ATI Radeon 9800 Pro @ XT 128MB DDR 256-bit @ 415/744 (Catalyst 4.12)
Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer Revision 3
Creative SoundBlaster Audigy2 ZS Platinum
Sony DDU1612 40x/16x DVD-ROM
Sony CRX230ED 52x/32x CD-RW
Enermax EG475P 470W PSU(+3.3V = 34A, +5V = 40A, +12V = 33A)
I've done quite a bit to my video card in the past few weeks:  replaced the stock ATI cooling with a VGA Silencer, flashed my Pro to XT status, and overclocked it mildly.
Just a few days ago I replaced the boxed CPU cooler with a Thermaltake Spark 7+ Xaser Edition A1715 CPU Cooler.  Here's where I ran into my first snag:  It didn't reduce my temperatures much.  At idle my Prescott 2.8 ran at 48 or 49C with the box cooler, and runs exactly the same under load.  However, with the stock cooler under load it would get all the way up to 69-71, whereas with this new cooler it only reaches 65-67.  Still not what I was expecting with this cooler though.
I decided to delve into a bit of CPU overclocking.  I increased the FSB 1MHz at a time, testing after each increase.
Except, I didn't get very far.  I was using Call of Duty multiplayer to test, and I get visual errors starting at 203MHz.  They're thin vertical white lines that flash for a second and then disappear.  Also jagged polygons strewn throughout the screen, usually white or a pale color.  When I clock back down to 202MHz, they disappear.
Using CPU-Z I get these values for my RAM modules:
http://mywebpage.netscape.com/ISBop/cpuz1.JPG
In case that picture doesn't work, they are:
FSB:DRAM = 1:1
CAS Latency = 3.0 clocks
RAS to CAS = 3 clocks
RAS Precharge = 3 clocks
Cycle Time = 3 clocks
Bank Cycle Time, DRAM Idle Timer, Total CAS, and Row To Column are all blank and greyed out.
I know that increasing the FSB also increases the memory frequency, so basically I'm trying to figure out if these artifacts are caused by the CPU or the memory.  My CPU cooler has manual fan control and when the system is under load I run the fan at high speed, and the temperatures aren't getting that high, so it doesn't seem like the CPU is the problem.
I looked around for specific information about my RAM modules' overclocking abilities, but found little.  I found the datasheet for my memory here(PDF format).  I was thinking that maybe tightening the timings would enable me to push up my FSB higher.  202 as a limit is a little disappointing, to say the least.
My BIOS settings are as follows:
Performance Mode = Turbo(MAT)
DOT = Disabled
CPU Ratio Selection = Locked
DRAM Frequency = 400
Spread Spectrum = Enabled
CPU Bus Clock = 202
DDR Clock = 404
AGP/PCI Clock = 66.66/33.33
CPU Voltage = 1.3875
DDR Voltage = 2.60
AGP Voltage = 1.65V
System Readings:
System Temperature = 35C
Vcore:
3.3V = 3.184 - 3.248
5.0V = 5.088 - 5.167
12.0V = 12.081 - 12.408

what does 202 do for you?  I mean I'm at 220.
RE the software?
What drivers?  You mean graphics drivers?  Different drivers haven't made a difference in any game.  The artifacts appear once I clock to 203.
I don't know if I have the RAM set correctly.  I was posting here to find that out.
By card voltage I assume you mean AGP voltage.  Its at 2.65V.  Vcore is at the lowest setting, 1.3875.  I tried 1.4000 and 1.4150 but neither affected the overclocking ability either way.  Still produced artifacts at 203.
How did you get to 220?  What happened when you went higher than that?

  • How do you properly set the RAM timings?

In an effort to solve random crashes on my pc I adjusted the RAM timings. I managed to stop the crashes, but I really didn't know what I was doing.
Recently I was playing with the cpu overclock options and I started crashing again, even after I was back to normal cpu settings. I managed to get it running stable again by adjusting the RAM timings, but again it was by trial and error.
I have read a lot of forums where people who have upgraded to a GF4 on several different systems have been plagued with crashes similar to mine. Is it possible that something is out of sync between the video, cpu, and ram? Is there anything that can be adjusted on the video card? Just a thought.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Assistance with ram timings; which way to go?

Hi, im new to these forums but I have a question thats eating me up!.
I have a gig of http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/memory/ocz_el_ddr_pc_3200_platinum_revision_2 that puppy . Im confused as to what do with my timings + bandwidth to achieve best performance on my system.  As i understand bandwidth hoggers (ie CSS/HL2) prefer more bandwidth over more speed. Also i understand that this ram can easily achieve speeds of DDR500. So what am i looking for? My sys setup is as follows
I primarly use this rig to write up reports and chat online...... YEAH RIGHT!
    500W xconnect ultra
    a64 3200+ with AS5 + Venus 12 (39 idle - 44 load) (soon to be oc'd)
    1gb of el ddr pc3200 plat rev2
    sb aud2
    6800GT OC 256mb by bfg (67.20)
MSI Neo plat 2 with bios 1.3
    36gb raptor
    200gb wd sata 7200rpm
    cdrw + dvdrw
Also if bandwidth is the answer anyone have a guide on how to do it for the neo2 mobo? It seems a bit trickier.
    Thanks.

Okies, last first. Put the ram in slots 1 and 2, as indicated on the motherboard silk screen and in the manual, you did read it?. Not 1 and 3
The next step down would be a 2t command rate timing.
Yes those timings are slower, as the faster your trying to run the ram on the front side bus, the slower the internal ram timings need to be. With your ram 2-2-2-10-1t would be the fastest possible internal speed. (it is faster then 2-2-2-5-1t, shouldn't be, but is). However it won't run much past 220 (if that) with those timings.
Your cpu runs at 10x whatever the front side bus is set to. The default is 200. Your cpu clock is 10. So it runs at 10x200 by default, which is 2000Mhz. When we set the fsb to 250, we are telling the ram to run at 250 and therefore the CPU to run at 10x250, or 2500mhz. Its that simple.
The 1-5 multipliers set the overall fsb speed, which effects the amount of bandwidth all your peripherals have access to. The motherboard wont support much past 1000 (maybe 1100). So 5x250 won't work, but 4x250 will, or 3x300 would, if your ram would run at 300, which it might at 3-4-4-10-2t but you might need 2.95 volts for that, which the board doesn't support.
Anyways, thats why I said to try those timings, set the bus to 4x250, and up the voltage on the CPU. If you do it right, and the cpu/ram can handle it. You will be running at 2.5 gigs, instead of 2.0. With 25% more ram bandwidth at 250, then you would have running at 200. With only a slight reduction in internal ram timings, whcih will be more then made up for in performance by the increased ram bandwidth.
Now if you wanted to try the CPU at 2.5 gigs, without overclocking the ram much at all. You would need to change the setting about max ram speed to 166. That actually would set the ram divider to .83 of the bus speed (250), about 207mhz. Which should work fine at 2-2-2-10-1t.
I hope all that made sense, have fun

  • New to overclocking RAM

    Good day Ladies! :P
Im new to overclocking Ram so bare with me alright
So just yesterday i received a nice little package from a competition i won .. a 16gb kit of Patriot Viper 3 1600mhz memory ( its free and better than my apacer 8gigs i had :P ) but now i have been reading around and apparently this ram over-clocks surprisingly well .. ( spec sheet http://www.patriotmemory.com/product/specs/PV316G160C9QK.pdf )
now i havnt really seen much of a difference ( yea yea i know there isnt much difference between 1333 and 1600 ), though i must say photoshop loves this ram.. from taking 24sec to open now down to 12-13sec to open ( no SSD )
So now, in my bio's i have seen there is like set option of 1333/1600/1866/2133 .. Im running AMD so i know 2133 isnt quite supported so wanting to push it to 1866.. Wanting to know, if i just set that to set option to 1866, will that do anything for me? will it change the latency timings etc ?
    Specs if needed:
    CPU: AMD FX-8350
    CPU Cooler: Corsair H100
    MoBo: MSI 990FXA-GD80 Bios 13.2
    Ram: 16gigs Patriot Viper 3 1600mhz
    GPU: MSI R6870
    Thanks a million :D

Back to the ram .. When you said try one at a time, you mean try with 1 ram stick at a time ? then after i find a stable clock i should put them all in?
Perhaps I was not quite clear on that
    1. I would test everything with 2 mem sticks first. If you have it stable, then add the other 2 and see if its still stable.
    2. When I said, try one at a time, I was referring to the timings. i.e. lets assume you are able to get them stable at 1866 10.10.10.30, then set it to 9.10.10.30 and retry, then go for 9.9.10.30, etc. You will have to toy around with different timings to see which one works best. i.e. you may find that 9.10.9.24 works, but all of them on 9 don't. You may even find that you have to loosen them to 11 to get stability. It will take time to find the best setting. Use a benchmark tool like maxxMem to see if there is any significant gain by OC'ing your mem. You may even find reduced performance once you go beyond a certain threshold.  Test, test, and more tests
btw, I see you are a fellow countryman

I still have problems loading windows and am getting repeated CONFIGMG windows protection error.  I'm not too fussed about that because once its up and running, it runs like a dream.
Q.Any ideas as to why my 3dfx is so comparitively slow? (Yes I know I should go out and get a Radeon 9700 pro gti turbo ultra gold.........)
    A. That'll be the z-buffer disabled...
I found some more info that might relate to my configmg problems here:
    http://www.easttexaschat.com/_tips/VxD_drivers.htm
But sadly it didn't work for me...
Its interesting that ECS got SLATED over this configmg error and some bright spark soldered a resistor onto his board which seemed to work.  It was put down to a SiS chipset needing to be at a certain temperature - i used this fix and it worked.
Could it be that a conventional system fan could be placed hear the nvidea heatsink to solve this problem?  As configmg errors can be motherboard related, could this explain poor memory compliance?  Could this explain its refusal to home my little geforce2 gts...?
And the answer is YES.  The chipset cooler is inadequate. 8o
    **The configmg errors have stopped.**
I used a standard 80mm case fan and modified it using a 2l plastic coke bottle so as to channel the air onto the heatsink without damaging it.  Previously it was difficult to get windows to load.  Now it has succsesfully loaded 10 times.
**I am now using the default memory timings without a problem - thats 6,3,3 Cas2.5**
Bear in mind that I tried these timings with my matroxg450 previously, and it resulted in crashes.
Now for the final test... I shall trawl out my geforce2 GTS - source of all my initial troubles with this board - could it be that the performance of this board was straining the chipset when it wasn't properly cooled, or is it still a device driver issue?
Well, during instillation of the drivers I got 2 VxD BSODS.  I tried 20.xx 30.xx and 40.xx which all failed to produce an image using directx 8.1.  Guess this board just doesn't like the card.

  • Ram Timings last question.

Is there anyways to lock the ram timings.  Everytime I change bus speed my ram speed changes.  I want to lock the ram speed to a particular speed.  Can I do that?  Thanks.  ie if I run on 202 FSB I wan to lock the ram speed at 400. or something like that.  Thanks.
PS I have the Bios 1.5B2.  Is the newest bios any good by the way?  Pat still enabled?

Just like I tried to explain in my POST I don't think you can LOCK THE MEM SPEED. As far as the RATIOS are concerned, It depends on what BUS SPEED CPU YOU ARE USING!! IF YOU HAVE AN 800FSB PROC. YOU HAVE THE MEM SPEED CHOICES OF 266, 333, 400, 500, 533, AUTO,. AND THE RATIOS HAVE TO DO WITH THE SPEED CHOSEN, FOR EXAMPLE 333MHZ WOULD BE A 5:4 RATIO, AND 400MHZ WOULD BE A 1:1 RATIO ect.ect.... But my point being, even if you clock your 400 mem. down to 333MHZ or a 5:4 RATIO, IF YOU RAISE THE SPEED OF THE FSB THE MEM SPEED WILL ALSO INCREASE ALL BE IT AT A DIFFERENT MHZ RATIO!! ...GET IT?....Sean REILLY

  • Is it necessary to manually set cpu and ram specs in bios anymore?

I just ugpraded with a K8N Neo2-F board, and Venice 3500+ cpu.   I didn't do anything in particular with the cpu/ram spec settings in the bios.  CPU-Z recognizes the cpu as a venice core 3500+, using multiplier 11 and fsb clock 200mhz, and the ram is recognized as 1GB pc2700, with assorted clock settings.  The ram is from Crucial and was spec'd out to my old MSI KT4AVL board, so I looked the same ram up again at Crucial.com, but it didn't list the various clock settings anywhere in the specs on that particular chip online.  At least the CAS Latency is showing up correctly in CPU-Z, from what the label on the ram says.  Should I just assume the other clock settings are correct, too?  How can I find out what they should be for my ram?  (I know - I should probably be using Corsair DDR400's like everyone else here, but $ is tight  so I just reused what I had...)

RAM timings should be set up if you want the best performance. Alot of times the motherboard is able to determine this but not always. In CPU-Z there are two tabs related to memory. One is SPD which should show you the recommended timings for your memory, the other tab Memory should show you what your memory is currently running out. If they are different I would go with what is listed on the SPD tab and put those values in the bios.
It would definitely be beneficial to upgrade your memory to 2 PC-3200 matched sticks, so you get the speed increase from the increased memory bandwidth and also so you can get dual-channel. I would put memory as the top priorty for the next item to get for the computer.
    Good Luck

This topic has been moved to Overclockers & Modding Corner.
getting most ffrom my cpu and ram cinfigd in the bios

You can use CPU-Z to check your settings.  I find it best to just use good ole bios overclocking.  Set ram 1:1(FSB/Dram ratio) and FSB to 200 that that should give you 2200Mhz.

  • X58a-GD65 ram timings keep resetting

    Hello all,
I am having some trouble with my X58A-GD65 mobo.
    My system specs:
MSI X58A-GD65 running latest bios (ends in .22 i believe, im at work so i cant check)
    I7 930 (D0), Vcore 1.15,
    6gb Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600mhz, 1.64V
    powercolor ATI 5850
I am having a problem where every time i restart my computer, my ram timings appear as all zeros.  The computer boots fine despite the all zero timings and shows 9-9-9-24-88 in cpuz.  This occurs regardless of my memory multiplier or voltage ( I have tried several settings from 1.5V to 1.65V), currently I am running a very mild 3.4ghz overclock but the problem exists on stock clock settings too.  This only happens after a cold reboot, it works fine when i first save the settings such as 8-8-8-24-1T and I haven't found any stability testing issues after 6 hours of prime95 or memtest.  The problem existed with the previous bios version too, I upgraded to try to resolve the problem.  Has anyone seen or heard of such a condition or have any suggestions.  I would be happy to provide any additional information if it would help.
A second issue I am having is that my bios doesn't appear to have the option to enable or disable XMP which all the screen shots of MSI bios I can find have below memory Z in the cell menu.  If I could find it or use it I would try one of the XMP profiles and see if the bios would allow them to stay.
    Thanks in advance!

Latest official BIOS appears to be 22.3 as of today anyway. As for X.M.P., after downloading & reviewing the manual, it didn't show it as an option with this mainboard in the BIOS Cell Menu screenshot.

  • Whats good ram timings for 4 sticks of 512 ddr400?

Very very close to just trashing the k8n neo2 since it's just been just one problem to next the next..hell for some reason it wont boot to windows xp unless I have the windows xp cd in one of the drives and set the cdrom as the first thing to boot.
Anyway, most dont bother me, cept the fact that the comp just wont boot if I have any ram(the ram itself isn't bad, checked) in the purple slots(ie slots 2&4..ie I can't dual channel).
Have the 1.3 bios, so the last thing I can think of is changing the timings. I tried 2.5, 3, 8, 3(I based it on a site that had the timings as 2,5 , 3 , 3 , 8, and im going to assume the 2 threes are the second and fourth ram option besides the 1t/2t thing.
Please help, all the crap thats gone wrong is minor compared to having to use only 1 gig single channel.
    Thanks in advance

I don't have knowledge of the neo2, but I'd try loosening the timings to 3,3,3,10 for a start. Ensure "Aggressive Timings" is off, and try 2T Ram timings if that doesn't work.
    Tried still doesn't work..

As for your PC not booting unless you have the XP cd in?? I assume you have actually installed XP, and in that case, you just need to ensure that your Boot drive (hard drive) is set to be the first boot device in BIOS.
When I set the hard drive is the first boot device for some reason the nvidia boot agent(what ever that is...)comes up..about a minute later it says system boot failure, please insert system disc and press enter. Not quite sure what system disc it's talking about, it's not windows xp or the msi cd. So I have to set the cd rom as the first boot device and have the windows xp cd in the main cd drive.

Also, try checking this thread out:
That thread has more to do with bad ram, that actually boots but is unstable while mine is stable but just doesn't boot.''

    Try the following:
    1) select 2T (in case it wasnt - this is a must with your 4 sticks)
    2) set memory timing to "Auto" as opposed to manually entering values.
    3) remove any automatic overclocking and any aggressive timing things
point 2) should help you exclude having mixed up timing values...
That's the default bios settings, doesn't work.
Tried tons of differnt timings and still nothing

  • Adobe utilizes my CPU over RAM, this normal?

So i ill start by saying i have a quad core i7 3.4ghz system with a 2gb Nvidia EVGA Geforce GTX 750ti FTW GPU and 16gb of ram.
when ever i render a project i have begun to notice that my system is utilizing my cpu over my RAM
my CPU will be ranging from 90-99% when rendering while my ram is only at 50% tops
when i have designated 13gb of RAM to adobe and 3gb of ram to everything else.
is this just how its going to be? or should my adobe be utilizing my ram over my cpu first?

Rendering/exporting is mostly a CPU process ... RAM is simply a fast in/out temp storage place for data that's partly "cooked" and waiting it's next step of processing ... in the CPU. If it needed more of the RAM, it would use it ... but as it is running up to and above 90% of the actual processing capability, it's not needing more.
GPU is also not used very much in exporting ... with a few exceptions. So ... exporting is primarily about your CPU, the front-side-bus (fsb) getting data moved from disc to CPU to RAM & back ... and your disc in/out sustained capabilities.
If  your CPU is nearly maxed, this is as fast as that machine's going to go.

    Hi Tom,
I just wanted to ask you about what you said about the color correction. To be quite honest I'm not sure what the best workflow is, and I haven't gotten my feet wet in multi-cam editing. Basically my work-flow has been.
    1) Import from the camera as optimized media - I found that adding color-correction at the import stage cause a severe hang with my tape-based Canon unit.
    2) Color-correct the imported files before loading any files into a project
    3) Drag files onto the timeline
    4) Click on the color-correction box
    5) Start editing - Usually I have one camera zoomed a little tighter on the singer, one on the whole band, and my iPad or iPhone camera at different angles so I start cutting things according to who is the focus of the moment, add a Ken Burns effect every here and there, Titles, an occassional transition effect.
    6) Add music effects after the looks are taken care of
    7) Export
Are you recommending clicking on the color-correction box after everything is done?
    Thanks - TZ
