A newbie asks - where the heck is my 80 gigs of memory?

i finally took the plunge yesterday and gave up my pc for a macbook. upon turning it on, i was told i needed to download 12 software updates...several attempts and a couple hours later, that's done. i downloaded istat, which is a dashboard widget to monitor cpu, battery, all that stuff, and i notice that it says i'm using 55 gig of memory. i figure that i'm just not understanding what it's telling me...
now, i just got a dialog telling me that my "startup disk is almost full." how can this be? where's all my memory?
help!

hmmm...okay, i did that, and i found a file called
'windowserver_last.log' that is taking up almost 36
gigs. what is that?
appreciating your help, by they way...
Your windowserver_last.log is ballooning for some reason. Go trash the file and read more about it here:

  • Where the heck is my library

Please help! Just upgraded from A2 to 3. No where in the process does it say there is a problem with upgrading libraries in the product software. I had library's arrayed on external harddrives. It asked if I would like to upgrade the libraries. I clicked yes. It went though the process then gave an error message about an unsupported something or other. Then, the libraries dissapeared from my hard drive. Where the heck are they? They haven't been trashed that I can tell but they aren't showing up on a search.

My external hard drive in question was a FAT32 (Western Digital) and evidently it isn't supported by aperture 3 even though I never had a problem with 2.
The next question is how on earth did you get it to work before? Aperture has never supported Libraries stored on FAT32-formatted drives, because some of the folder names in the Library structure include illegal characters for Windows-formatted drives.
The tech notes that Brian just linked to are for Aperture 2.

P.S. If you can recover the images you should be able to recover the rest as well, they all exist as files inside the Library package. You can find one of my old articles about this on O'Reilly - there was a more thorough one on the old Aperture Network site but I no longer know how to fins anything on there.

but cannot do this because I cannot access Mac App Store
If you can't access the App Store from the Apple menu, Dock, or Applications folder installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo will reinstall the App Store for you.
It's ok to do this even you are already running v10.6.8.

If the dialogue appeared once, and you cancelled once, the dialogue may reappear when you next log in. For more certainty I suggest a restart of the operating system, then a log in.
If you like: immediately after the problem is worked around, open the Console utility to see whether — amongst its view of all messages — there is an obvious sign of what caused the dialogue to appear. (If you see nothing obvious, don't waste too much time looking.)

  • Create new mailboxes but where the heck are they?

I am so frustrated I want to switch back to Windows. I am using the new mail feature of Lion and everytime I create a new mailbox, it tells me it's going to create the mailbox in "on my mac" location. But where the heck is this location? Why can't the folder or the mailbox just be created in the right pane of mail. Why do have bury my mailbox I created in some multilayer almagom simply because they don't want me to work in the way I am use to. Stop being so Big Brother Apple, this really really is awful.

OK I solved this myself as I found that it was hidden in the new mail and I just had to switch it show

  • HT201304 Where the heck is the 'agree' button on new iTunes conditions e-mail

Where the heck is the 'agree' button on new iTunes conditions e-mail ?

I was certain that that couldn't be the problem because I could play music from my daughter's computer and she could play stuff from mine, so I was positive that home sharing was all set.  When I went through that article, however, I found that I had missed a step.  It's weird that you can access a family member's computer even though home sharing isn't set up entirely!
In any case, thank you very much for your time.  I'm embarrassed that the answer was out there, googleable, and even a page that I had looked at already, but you were incredibly gracious anyway.    Good karma to you, sberman!

  • HT5228 Where the heck is the download button?

Where the heck is the download button for the java update.
I hate that everything on this web site is so **** hard to find.  It's irritating and anger provoking.  Nothing should be this **** difficult!

Thank you for saying that. that's cute raccoon even if he's not supposed to be doing that. I am spending a lot of time on fb trying to help bird breeders in Asia, the middle east, India and other places to give their birds enrichment.  They call me names and say horrible things to me.  The birds are over crowded, have one perch, metal or brick walls and that's it.  They all have to sit on one perch shoulder to shoulder in some cases.  I try to work to save gorillas and elephants who are horribly treated in this country as well as others. Wolves, dolpjin and whales. Whales and parrots especially.  Parrots are my speciality.
Thank you again for caring about animals. Did you know that recently an orangutan mother and her baby were captured because they reached for a piece of fruit? They beat her, tied her up, stoned her and then drowned her with her baby clinging to her side. They are also tying up female orangutans and letting men rape them one after another. They already have no habitat since it's all been cleared for palm oil palms so they don't have food and they are an endangered species.
Evil prevails on this planet and we are in a death spiral. If you want you can friend me on fb and you will see all my posts for petitions and other important information to try to give help to animals and the environment.

  • General Disquiet: where the heck is he????

Anyone seen or heard of GD recently, I'm an ex correspondant of his, and I wonder "by my troth", where the heck he's got to these days?

"Welcome to Royston Vasey - You'll never leave."

What a racket!  Who keeps shouting loud enough to wake the dead?  There was I, minding me own business, sleeping off the mother of all parties near Glastonbury Tor - with all those armoured blokes called Uther, Arthur, Sir Lancelot and Sir Kay and Sir Sprocket.
Yes, I know you've never heard of Sir Sprocket, but he's the one who povided the rest of the Round Table with their nifty gear.
Now, when they aren't carousing or sleeping off the effects of a good carouse, they tend to wander round waving their swords in the air, shouting instructions such as: "Thrust, Parry, Block, Openreach!"
The last instruction is, of course, a pretty useless combat manoevre - calling for the fighter to thrust his unsworded hand towards his opponent whilst muttering "unplug yer master socket", "reboot yer router" or anyone of a dozen similar inanities.
Of course, the outcome of an Openreach attack is that there will be the inevitable need to patch the poor innocent up with some decent broadband.  I find the sticky stuff best, but I know some folks are allergic and the hypoallergenic broadband isn't available here in 5th Century Wessex.
You should alway remember that, when you've been split from crown to chitterlings, it's best to have ultrafast, symmetrical broadband.  2Mbps might sound fast - if all you've ever suffered from is a vellum-cut on the end of digit, but trust me,  a gaping wound requires something much faster.
After a good bash like the one we had last night (or was it last year?), it is always advisable to wander round the party venue exhorting the peasants with calls of "Dial-up, dial-up".  This requires the peasants to turn any ex-combatants to face the sky and, in turn, signifies the failure of the healing powers of the broadband and the passage of the partygoer towards Infinity.
Now, why did you wake me up ???????????

  • Where The Heck Is My Add File?????

So I've completely dumped and reinstalled compressor and am trying to simply import a file and I can't seem to find where the heck the window would be located to import a file!!!!! look!
    http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g109/Bonesone4/Picture2-7.png

Okay, I got it to work.
    Open QuickTime Player
    Go to:
QuickTime Player Menu > QuickTime Preferences > Advanced
Check the box to "Show legacy encoders".
Right underneath the check box it says, "Allows exporting using older codecs"
I opened Compressor, nothing happened. Then restarted and opened compressor, and the boxes in compressor returned.
Then it occurred to me what might have made the boxes go away:
I initially set up my FCP import codec setting to : HDV 1080i.
But, I recently had to import an older, lower quality DV, which was shot 3 years ago. I had to change the codec setting to regular DV in order to import the video.
After I edited the DV video, I tried to push it to Compressor, and that was when I noticed that the Compressor Boxes were missing for the first time.
After I checked the Quicktime Box to "Show legacy encoders" (Allow exporting using older codecs). The boxes came back.
Not saying it will work for you, but I tried everything else: including 2 complete un-installations and re-installations, messing with Display settings and Expose, updates, preferences, downloading Pacifist... and nothing worked for me.
I found this idea from another message board and i'm sorry i can't find it again to give them credit.

  • NetBeans Newbie: where the heck is my System.out going?

Sorry to ask what has to be a blindingly obvious question, but after working with Creator 2 fora bit, I'm still confused by one of the most obvious things: where is the results of my System.out.println() getting displayed?
In Eclipse, this stuff showed up just fine in the output panel, but no matter what views I open in Creator, I can't manage to see my text. Darn it.
Since it's often very handy to sprinkle a few println into code rather than incurring the expense of running in debug (especially when I want to track how values are changing over time), this is quite frustrating. So someone give me a quick smack to the back of the head and tell me what Patently Obvious thing I've overlooked.
    Thanks.

No you are not being stupid because it is not apparent where the output is going.
I am NEW to this...so whereas the other people have been a great help I think they may have gotten lost in the assumption that you know things that should be "obvious".
I'm running the 2004Q2 version and this this what I did to view the output:
1). View (pulldown) then select Server navigator
2). you will see "Deployment Server"
3). Right Click on it and select "view Server Log"
4). there is a tab then called Localhost 14848 and THAT is where the output goes.
Hope this helps all the other newbie's.
P.S. it only took me 45 minutes to figure this out and this was WITH the help of all the notes in this thread....so, cheer up :-)

  • OAS - Where the heck do I start?

    Good Afternoon, Everyone:
After aggressively consuming one of the new Flex 3 Books on the market, I now know that I will need to use the Oracle Application Server to provided a means to a web service to be exposed for Flex to interactive with the database data. Okay, so . . . I wanted to download a simple OAS but I see everything from SOA to BPEL (What the heck is that, anyway?). Where is the Oracle Application Server for 10g? help?!?

Please use this link and download all CDs for your environment that are for 'Application Server

  • Where the heck is my import?

I'm really beginning to get cheesed off with iPhoto 11. I basically moved my family's entire photo collection to the app, thinking it would be easier to use. It's great for just scanning through large volumes of pictures, and the photo books are pretty nice, but I keep having issues that completely terrify me.
Take just now. I realized the other day that I hadn't dumped my phone for a long time and had over 1000 photos on it. I did the import, then told iPhoto to go ahead and delete the photos off my phone. While it was deleting, iPhoto crashed. I reopened it, and here's what I see under last import: 4 imports, none of which is the one I just did.
    So I'm pulling my hair out wondering;
Where are the 600 photos that ONLY exist on my Mac, now?
Why the heck does "Last Import" show more than one import?
Why isn't my "Last import" THE LAST IMPORT? I realize the app crashed and was left in a muddled state, but the app should be checkpointing WHEN THE IMPORT COMPLETES. Importing photos -- it's kind of an important thing for a photo app.
Perhaps most importantly, WHY DON'T WE HAVE THE ABILITY TO SEE PHOTO BATCHES GROUPED BY IMPORT? Like, for all time? This seems obvious, and IIRC iPhoto used to work this way.
This is a real disappointment. Furthermore, this is not the first time I have had problems like this. I'm about ready to give up and go back to Picasa.
    TK

I'm not intending to rub salt into the wounds but I suggest you not let iPhoto delete the photos off the phone or camera after import.  Why? Just exactly what happened to you this time.  Too many reports of incomplete uploads and complete deletions.
Larry covered the Event settings as to how they are grouped by the EXIF Capture Date.  That's set in iPhoto's General preference pane:
I prefer to upload my photos to a folder on the Desktop first (with a card reader for cameras with a removable memory card or with Image Capture for phones, cameras that do not) where I can name the folder what I want the Event title to be.   Photos imported from a folder via the Finder are not separated by date but are all included in the same event.   This workflow also lets me rename the image files to something more informative that IMG_001.jpg, etc.  I use the international date with a brief description like 2011-04-24-Easter Din @ Toad Hall-001.JPG. There are renaming applications that can batch, sequentially rename photos.
A little effort up front can avoid issues later on regarding identifying photos, etc.

  • What a dumb customer service!!!! and where the heck is my payment?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so furious right now to the point my whole body is shaking and I feel dizzy!
I've been mailing out the check for $55 every month on 1st or 2nd of each month for past 2, 3 years now.
I don't get statements in mail, so I typed one page with the accountholder's name, address, account number and payment address. This check for $55 is issued by my work, so what I do every month is that as soon as I receive the check, I print out this little page with all the information, I staple the check to the page and mail out to the payment address listed under Contact Us on Verizon wireless website.
My due date is 21st of each month. As I mentioned above, I mail out the check either on 1st or 2nd of each month, which means the check should be arrived, processed, cleared from the bank, and credited to my account before my due date.
I don't have the entire record, but I can see the payment history for past 12 month from my verizon wireless online and this check for $55, although I've been mailng out on a very regular basis, it has been posted to my account very irregularly.
Sometimes, it gets credited to my account before the 10th. Sometimes, it gets credited sometime before my due date. Sometimes, it gets credited way after my  due date. Sometimes, it gets cleared from the bank, but doesn't even get credited to my account. Every month, I have to closely monitor whether this month's check has been cleared and credited for this account.
If this happens to many accountholders, I would not be this frustrated.
I have a coworker who gets the same check from the work and mail out on the same day to VERIZON WIRELESS. Okay? Mark this. Same amount of check issued by the same bank goes to the same payment address by mail (same postal service). Difference? Her due date is 11th and mine is 21st. Another difference? Her payment gets credited in few days and well before her due date. Mine takes forever and ever and sometimes lands on a wrong account.
I called the customer service today to see where my check is and why it has not been cleared yet. The customer service, Jose, was so rude and raising his voice saying that it might have been the post office at fault. And then, he was asking if I wrote a wrong address or anything. Hello~ I TYPED the freaking payment address and my account number and saved in my computer. You've been getting my check with no problem for the past 2, 3 years now, so I'M SO SURE THAT IT'S NOT THE POST OFFICE WHO'S AT FAULT!!!! On top of it, I'm not calling to figure out whom to blame.
Then, I talked to the supervisor, Eric. Hey, if you are the supervisor, you should be able to give me more than the same lame lines that JOSE was giving me.  Don't say that I've been mailing my check to the lockbox and you don't have the contact number. I've been sending my check to the freaking lousy lockbox and so have my coworker. She doesn't have the same problem that I have. Even if the lockbox doesn't have the contact number and a live person in, there is the department in which they process the payment, right? You should contact them to figure something out! You should provide a CUSTOMER SERVICE. What part of CUSTOMER SERVICE don't you get as a SUPERVISOR? I am YOUR CUSTOMER! and I, the CUSTOMER, hereby request a  SERVICE that I am entitled to!
What did you just say? SUPPRESSING the late charges? Hey, Eric, Look!. I  mailed out the check on 1st of August! I'm sure it doesn't take more than three days to be delivered from Los Angeles to Dallas. When I mailed out the check even before you generated my bill, how dare you to even mention the LATE CHARGE? It is NOT my ****** problem that you have a lousy system to process the check. You better fix the **bleep** problem.
You'd better keep your word and call me back with answers to all the questions (about irregular postings to my account, what's been causing the delay, etc) by TUESDAY.
What? Suppressing the late charges is all you can do for me? I just wasted my 40 minutes holding the call, and not getting all the answers I wanted, and dealing with non-sense ridiculous customer service and that's all you can do? You should waive my payment. You should give me like 1000 min credit.
I've been using the Verizon Wireless for almost 5 years and I'm seriously disappointed at the level of customer service you provided and the way you are handling this matter and not providing a good reason why you are messing up with my payment.

I can understand that the situation is infuriating, but the anger is misplaced. To start, it is very bad practice to not have a direct way to view whether the check you are sending had been cashed. While it gives the appearance of being convenient, you are setting yourself up for a nightmare when you do not, first, deposit the funds and issue your own method of payment. Secondly, the fact that it was not applied to the account does not necessarily mean that Verizon Wireless is at fault. You cannot determine this absolutely until you confirm that the check had been cashed by VZW, which, again, is going to be difficult to impossible because you are sending a check from a third party. The likelihood that it was lost in the mail should not seem shockingly preposterous. Matter of fact, people use this excuse because it is a very plausible scenario. It is essential to know whether the check was cashed by VZW, if it was, then they can go through the steps to find it; if, however, it was not, then it is something you will want to get reissued.
My advice is to follow the approach listed above, but, more so, eliminate the overly emotional reactions so that the matter can be addressed in a logical way.

  • Where the heck does Mail store settings ? Every 30 days it shreds mine ARGH

Every month or so Mail shreds all my damned settings. I thought it was my actions for a while, but the laptop was OFF for a week, then i checked mail a couple of days, and then it shreded all my settings.
    Mail is GONE.
Settings are worthless, and I cannot even remove the damned accounts and start over because Mail and KeychainAccess are screwing things up together.
Where are the settiings so I can shred them once and for all ? I am sick of having to make a new user account every month because of a email client!
    Mac os 10.4.6
    mail 2.0.7

The problem is that mail defaults to other 'autofill
form' information everytime it sends requests to the
    servers (my best guess).
I have no idea what are you talking about here.
the keychain prompt will pop up asking
for a password for the server login...
I'm not sure what are you talking about here either, but I guess it's just that Mail asks you for your password from time to time. Unfortunately, this is normal behavior when Mail cannot establish a proper connection with the POP server for whatever reasons. It does not necessarily mean there is anything wrong with your password or with the keychain. This is just one of the many misleading and bogus error messages in Mail.
Yes, creating a new user account solves teh issues
    almost immediately.
And just doing nothing and trying again after some time would probably have the same effect in most cases. That "creating a new user account solves the issues almost immediately" does not necessarily mean that "Mail shreds all [your] damned settings", nor that your "settings are worthless"
    I just don't think I should have
to chown -R everything every 30 or so days.
Could you please elaborate on this?
