A newer version of AirPort Utility is required

Hi everyone,
My Airport Utility keeps telling me that "A newer version of AirPort Utility is required."
My airport extreme is a (new) dual band unit (running v7.5) and the AirPort utility (v5.4.2) seems to be the latest and greatest.
What am I doing wrong?

You need to install the new software from the disk that came with the Airport Extreme.
This is only available on the disk at this time as Apple has not released the new version for download.
The new version of Airport Utility is 5.5 which is on the disk that came with the new Airport Extreme.

  • 5.4.2 of utility: "A newer version of AirPort Utility is required."

The Airport Utility for osx 5.4.2 pops up this warning when I try to configure the base station.
"A newer version of AirPort Utility is required.
This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this Apple wireless device and might improperly configure the device if you continue to use it. Use the version of AirPort Utility that came on the CD with your Apple wireless device. Check www.apple.com/support/airport for the latest version of AirPort Utility."
Maybe I'm tripping but I believe 5.4.2 is the latest version?

+So what do we do when someone has the newest Time Capsule (late 2009) but cannot find the install disc?+
You would need to call Apple customer support. Apple has not posted AirPort Utility 5.5 for download because...according to a "genius" at the Apple store....Version 5.5 is not fully compatible with earlier versions of the AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule and AirPort Express.

Hi trying to set up new Time Capsule, it says I need a newer version of Airport Utility, how do I get this?

You need to be running at least the Lion (10.7.5) operating system or higher on your Mac, or using an iPhone or iPad with AirPort Utility installed on the device to set up the Time Capsule.
Check the System Requirements for the Time Capsule to confirm.

  • How do you upload firmware to Airport extreme with the following message: This version of AirPort Utility requires this AirPort Extreme use firmware version 7.3.1 or later. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to update this base station. I'm using airport utility 6.0

The airport extreme at my parent's house has not had its firmware update in some time and it keeps dropping the internet connection and needing to be reset.
I went to update firmware and opened up airport utilities (I'm running airport 6.0 on Mountain Lion, 10.7.4).  Everytime I open the airport utility I get the following message: "
This version of AirPort Utility requires this AirPort Extreme use firmware version 7.3.1 or later. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to update this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support.
I've followed the link and tried to update firmwares but none are available and the print says that airport utility will look to see if firmware are available and load them as necessary when prompted by user.
One link said the only way to solve this problem is open up Airport Utility 5.6. I tried to do this, but 5.6 is not supported on Mountain Lion and couldn't be opened up.
I'm getting the exact same message on my other computer, a Mac Air.
So basically, can't download new firmware and am stuck with a ****** airport extreme that needs to keep being reset, a factory reset, in order to use the internet, but then continues to give me the same message.
    Thanks!

  • How do I get my macmini running Mountain Lion to see my Canon USB printer connected to my Airport Extreme? I have a macbook pro running leopard and that works fine. The versions of airport utility are different and I can't even see the printer from new 1

I am having trouble seeing my usb printer from my second gen airport extreme using the newest version of airport utility under Mountain Lion. UGH! And while I can see and network to my Canon IP5000 from my macbook pro running leopard, I can't from my new macmini running Mountain Lion. Any help would be appreciated in configuring my macmini so it can see the Canon IP5000 on the airport extreme. Don't want to "share" the printer from the laptop because that would be a cludge. Thanks ahead

I solved this one based on another post. Turned out I needed the snow leopard IP5000 driver. I had just copied over the leopard driver (I had saved my .dmg file) and installed that but it didn't work. So I downloaded the latest driver which turned out to be for snow leopard and I am guessing since it is 64bit that is why it worked and the leopard driver didn't. Anyway, I also had to hook the printer up via usb to the mac mini to get it to work locally before the O/S would see it over Bonjour via the airport extreme.

  • This version of AirPort Utility requires this AirPort Extreme use firmware version 7.3.1 or later. Go to AirPort Service and Support for more information.

I am trying to update my Airport Extreme. I go into the Airport Utility and this is the message attached I get when clicking on it.
"This version of AirPort Utility requires this AirPort Extreme use firmware version 7.3.1 or later. Go to AirPort Service and Support for more information." That;s it.
I guess I can hard reset it, but this seems weird. Any advice would be nice.
    Thank you.

  • Current version of Airport Utility 6.3.1 will not allow me to configure my Airport Extreme

I am trying to extend my Airport network.  I bought a couple of years' ago an Airport Express and have been using that but the signal is weak at the back of the house so I thought I would bring back into action my Airport Extreme which I have had for at least 10 years.  I can still use it as my primary wi-fi source directly of the modem but I am unable to configure it in the current version of Airport Utility as a base station to extend the network.  I think that the Airport Utility is incompatible with it.  Is this likely?  Is there a soution?  Many thanks.

Unfortunately, even if it were possible to find a version of AirPort Utility that would work with the old AirPort Extreme, the old Extreme does not have the capability to "extend a wireless network" since this feature was introduced in the 2007-2008 versions of the AirPorts.
I'm afraid that you will need to add a new AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme if you need to "extend" the current wireless network that the AirPort Express now provides.

  • I have an Airport Extreme as my wifi hub and an Airport Express to beam music. All of a sudden the Express stopped working and I get the error message "this version of Airport Utility does not support this base station".  All my software is up to date and

I have a WiFi system in the house that uses the Airport Extreme for a hub and an older Express for sending music from my Mac to my sound system. Everything worked great till yesterday. When I go to Networks I see the Extreme and I see the Express but the Express is no longer connected and I get an error message "this version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station".  Any ideas?

This sounds as if you have an older AirPort Express that is no longer supported by the newer Mavericks operating system.
To check and see if  that might be the case, locate the model number on the side of the AirPort Express. It will start with an "A" followed by four numbers. Hard to see in the faint print.....so you may need reading glasses or a magnifying class to see the model number clearly.
Model numbers A1084 and A1088 of the AirPort Express are no longer supported by AirPort Utility in Mavericks.
You will need to use a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC to be able to administer the older AirPort Express.

Is this an older "round" version of the AirPort Extreme? If yes, it is true that AirPort Utility 6.x no longer supports the older AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express models.
A model number......located on the bottom of the Extreme or on the side of the Express would be helpful to confirm what you have.
Apple probably does want you to buy a new AirPort Extreme.
The workaround might be to use a Mac or PC running a 5.x version of AirPort Utility.
A more complicated workaround would be to install AirPort Utility 5.6 on Mountain Lion.  This is not supported by Apple......it does work for me.....but may not work for you. See this article for more details:

My airport express is 10 years old and I get the message that this version of airport utility (6.2) doesn't support my base station? What to do?

    What to do?
    Two Options:
    1) Buy a new AirPort Express, which will be supported.
    2) Try a workaround....not supported by Apple.....to install AirPort Utility 5.6 on the Mac using the Mountain Lion operating system and use the 5.6 application to administer the old AirPort Express.  See this thread for more details:

  • Previous versions of airport utility

I need a earlier version of airport utility to manage my AirPort Extreme

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Are you using Windows or OS X? If you are using Windows, first uninstall AirPort Utility from Control Panel, and then, download AirPort Utility 5.6.1 > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1547
If you are using OS X, note that it's not possible to uninstall AirPort Utility. Some old AirPort stations and Time Capsules aren't compatible with the most recent AirPort Utility version, so you have to install AirPort Utiliy 5.6. To do that, follow these steps > http://www.macg.co/news/voir/258615/installer-utilitaire-airport-5.1-sous-mounta in-lion

  • Newer mac mini airport utility can't work with older airport express

Hi anyone who can help me out.
I have a relatively new mac mini (2012), and a much older airport express. I can accesss the internet no problem, but I cannot use the airport utility to chane the password on the airport expres. when I try, I get this message "This version of AirPort Utility doesn’t support this base station. Go to AirPort Service and Support for more information." I have the latest version of Airport utility (6.3.1), which is supposed to work with all generaions of airport express. I need to change the password, but I do not have any of the original set-up disks for the airport. How do I fix this?
    Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately, AirPort Utility in Lion and Mountain Lion no longer supports the older wireless "b/g" versions of the AirPort Express. This would include model numbers A1084 and A1088.
Please locate the model number on the side of your AirPort Express devices to verify the version that you have.
If you have another Mac running the Leopard or Snow Leopard operating system, you can use AirPort Utilty on that Mac to administer the older Express. A PC could be used as well.
If you cannot use another Mac or PC, then you might want to consider trying an unsupported method to install an older version of AirPort Utility on your Mountain Lion Mac. No guarantees can be offered that this will be successful since Apple does not officially support this method, but it does seem to work for most users.
See this thread for more details:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22940547#22940547
If nothing seems to work, the final option....likely the one that Apple wants you to use.....would be to buy a new AirPort Express.

  • What version of airport utility should I use for my airport express if I'm running Mountain Lion?, What version of airport utility should I use for my airport express if I'm running Mountain Lion?

I can't configure my airport express because I get a message stating I need to run an older version of airport utility to support itk but when I try and install the older version, I get a message stating it can't be installed because it isn't supported.  Help!

Unfortunately, Apple did not include support for older AirPort devices in the recent "upgrade" to Mountain Lion. A few conversations with Apple Support indicate that Apple has no plans to change this going forward.
If you have another Mac there running Lion or Snow Leopard...or even a PC...you can use that device to administer the older AirPort Express.
If that is not possilble....and you have been using Time Machine for backups of your Mac....you can try to go back in time to locate the earlier version of AirPort Utility and restore it to the desktop. Then, simply move the AirPort Utility application into the Utilites folder and will co-exist with AirPort Utility for Mountain Lion.
Apple does not support this type of thing of course, so you will be on your own if you want to try an "unsupported" procedure like this.
