A note to those who need to edit FLVs

No, I certainly don't encourage editing FLVs, by any stretch of the imagination, but there are times when you've just gotta do what you've just gotta do...
I'm working on a client's project in which they're using predominantly stock footage that will be purchased from iStock. Instead of buying all the clips to begin with and editing with those, just in case my client's client changes their mind about some of the selects, I'm using the downloadable watermarked versions to do a first cut. All of the clips are FLVs, either as Flash Video 6 aka Sorenson Spark aka H.263 or as Flash Video 8 aka On2 VP6. The clips imported just fine into PPro CS4 and, though smaller than the final high-resolution versions, are good enough for a rough.
The problem was that these clips would play back sporadically--we've seen/heard about this a million and a half times before on the boards here about this issues. The clips would play OK for a few frames or seconds, then freeze, and then come loose again. Annoying, to say the least. I was about to convert all of these into something else (a process I wasn't looking forward to), when I suddenly had a thought.
It's been my experience that Premiere has a tendency to think that some types of footage or media have alpha channels, even when they don't. Upon closer inspection, that appeared to be the case here. Even though On2 VP6 does support an alpha channel, these clips did not have one. And the FLV6 clips definitely don't support alpha, and yet Premiere was saying that there was indeed an alpha channel associated with each one of these clips.
Ah ha...
The solution to the stuttering play, therefore, turned out to be pretty simple: I simply right-clicked on my footage bin, selected "Interpret Footage..." and checked the "Ignore Alpha Channel" option. Bob's your uncle, it worked. Immediately, the clips played back without so much as a single dropped or frozen frame.
While I cannot vouch for this technique being the silver bullet for all troublesome media, it is definitely something to try and certainly can't hurt. I hope someone else out there finds this useful.

Colin,
Useful and interesting. It is also simple!
I've had good luck with the Moyea FLV Importer for Premiere, in earlier versions of PrPro. Do not know if it "stripped" out any reference to Alpha, but never had any issues (other than the quality, small Frame Size and all that "stuff."). For a period of time, Moyea did not offer a version of Importer, that would work with CS4. I have been informed that even though CS4 has native support, they have issued an updated version that will work in CS4. Do not know if one would still need to do the Interpret Footage/Ignore Alpha, or not. I also do not know of any other issues, that might exist with that plug-in.
Thank you,
Hunt

  • IPod Info for those who need it

Just thought I'd give some help to those who need it.
    - For those who are having trouble with their ipods accepting some videos and not others, try shortening the names of the video files. As long as the video files are in the proper format, this should clear up that issue.
    - For those who want to get the songs off of your ipod without having to worry about the iTunes one-way syncing issue the following programs will help you with that:
    PodPlus
    iPod Agent
    - For those who are just curious, here are the size incriments for data:
    Bit
    Byte
    Kilobyte
    Megabyte
    Gigabyte
    Terabyte
    Pentabyte
I've got the 5th gen iPod and after a little finessing, I think I've got it all pretty much figured out. So, if anyone has questions, gimme a shout. Or maybe you've got some cool ideas I can use!

What is an ideal average setting for my homemade iMovies?
Settings for your iMovie for what? If your are talking about conversion to an iPod compatible format, which format? Are you more concerned with quality or quantity?
First, what's the best, fastest and easiest way to convert these iMovies to the H.264 (is that done through iMovie or QT Pro or both) and what other settings (audio for one) should I be using besides the standard 30 fps ?
Your are using the same QT tools whether you convert directly from iMovie or indirectly via QT Pro using a reference file. (I.e., the only time you save is the time it takes to write the reference file itself.)
Define what you mean by best.
The "Movie to iPod (320x240)" option is the fastest in terms of programming your conversion but the slowest in terms of time it take for processing. The "Movie to MPEG4" option is slower/harder to program for a single pass H.264 encode, but takes half the time to process as the dedicated H.264 option. MPEG4 video options (single pass and 2-pass modes) are faster than H.264 codec. Audio options are the same for both H.264 and MPEG4 formats -- AAC LC. I personally would stick with the 44.1 kbps sampling rate and 128 kbps data rate for audio but you could take it up to 48 kbps at 160 kbps if you want. As to frame rate, I would stick with the current (original) setting of your source. 30 (29.97) fps provides the smoothest flow of motion. You could, of course, try 24 or even 15 fps in some cases to see if it is acceptable. Dropping below 12 fps would probably be unacceptable to most people. But you're the producer and director here, so you have to make up your own mind.

  • For those who need Edit before Call function

I found many post in forum/ discussion board outside complaining about why iPhone is missing edit before call features (select the phone number and add the prefix, int'l country call, dial code, etcs). This feature is relatively standard in other brand phone indeed. I would like to suggest iPhone users to go and have a look on a app called - Smart Dialler, under productivity, in the Store.
I love this app. It allow me to select the contact, their phone numbers, and then, add new or previously used 10 prefix in a single screen, finally, calling out ! Easy and simple.

Thanks you. I always need to make long distance call and sometimes travel to Europe and Asia. This little tool save me a lot of effort.

  • Those who need help converting in iTunes:

If you're like me and needed an mp3 file or anything but kept getting stuck with m4a, there's a SIMPLE way to fix this (not the crap people give you about having to burn CDs and stuff)-
    1. Open iTunes and go into your preferences.
    2. Select the importing tab.
    3. Where it says "Import Using: (AAC ENCODER)" just select the one that says MP3 encoder, or whatever other file you want it to be.
    4. Go back into your library with those changed settings.
    5. Select a song (or a number of songs), hold the option key while you click it and select "Convert selection to (MP3)".
Very simple. It makes a copy of the song in that format. There's no need to waste a CD, nor go to some website and pay for a converter. I hope that helped some of you.

The only time when people talk about "burning CDs and stuff" is when protected iTMS content is in question. Besides that, I don't think there is much mystery in transcoding files in iTunes, as it's pretty straightforward.

  • Implementing Thin MRC - seeking notes from those who trod this way before

We are exploring the option of implementing Thin MRC for our CAD set of books - to be reported in USD (since USD is the currency that the parent company reports in). We tested this functionality already in a test environment, and have seen it work well.
Once we setup the MRC_DEBUG profile option, it was smooth sailing - actually, it was so smooth that we are not sure if we have all ends covered..
I am looking at receiving notes from fellow Oracle implementors who have gone this route before, and who may have some comments to add on the thin MRC functionality.
    Thanks,
    Ravi B Vishwas

Yeah...I did it last year (about this time with Ravi Vishwas)...I unfortunately lost my setup notes, but I just got a new set.
Let me know if you want me to email them to you.

  • Future Music good for those who have not yet learned all

Future Music Magazine, which I get on the magazine rack at my WalMart, has some good stuff in November-December issues for those who need to learn more. I am talking about a two-part article, "The A to Z of digital music". or something like that. A through M is covered in the November issue. N through Z is planned for December. Topics A-Z are explained in a paragraph or more. EQ is covered for example. November also has a tutorial sort of thing on Reverb.
Future Music has not always been so helpful. I did not find much in the October issue akin to what I have mentioned above.
I think these two issues of Future Music will be quite helpful to me and perhaps to others among us also.

Correction. Various topics, beginning with A through Z, are EACH explained in a paragraph or more. Sometimes there is a little essay on a topic. Good for newbies and sometimes good for non-newbies who must do not know it all yet.

  • Is it only those who upgrade who have problems?

Just for interest - what about the people who are buying brand new Macs with Leopard already installed - are they also having problems - or is it just us lot who have older machines with Tiger or Panther?

My G5 upgraded perfectly. See my minute-by-minute post somewhere herein.
The machine is now dual-boot - Tiger and Leopard - one on each internal drive, and an old Maxtor 160Gb FW drive is what TM is using. So far my box has not complained about anything important.
Even my VPC running XP runs as well as my 2004 StudioMX.
I still have my two MPBs to go, but am waiting for another LaCie HD before going any further - rushing never solves anything. I once was told never to rush or take shortcuts - - unless you have plenty of time
I would also point out that these boards are not a fair sampling of users. These are Support boards, so basically only those needing support will post here. These boards would be overloaded with posts if all the successful Leopard upgraders each posted here only once
This is the doctor's office - think triage - those who have successfuly installed Leopard are out partying, which is a good thing; here we enjoy helping those who need assistance. It's a way of sharing our good experiences.

    Hi,
Please let me know the exact workflow you are following.
Does it occur with all files?
Are you trying to convert from within Reader or from Browser.
If from Reader then make sure you are signed in within Reader
Also try updating Reader to the latest v11.0.09 and check.

I'm not sure which version iPod you have, but I just checked my iPod nano (current generation) and it also has a Mono Audio setting in Settings>General>Accessibility.

    Hi,
Unfortunately, it is not possible to retrieve the deleted data. If you have made the changes to the response and closed the response window; new data must have been saved automatically. In future, if you accidentally overwrite any data; please press ctrl+z to undo the change.

To share either select the link (paperclip) icon on the right of the file or folder list.
Cut and paste the link into an email you send your friends. Do not use the "share this" option in Dropbox as it forces them to join.
You can test it after deleting your browser cache and cookies - you will no longer be signed in to Dropbox but the link should work fine.

Is there a Pages for MAC OS 10.7.x?
If not, what is the alternative?
Concrete issue is that I have received a ".pages" document and need to edit. I am running Mac Pro with OS X 10.7.
    Many thanks

It is important that you determine if the .pages document originated from Pages ’08, Pages ’09, Pages v1.7.2 (IOS 6), or was exported as Pages ’09 from Pages v5+ on OS X Mavericks. If it meets one of these criteria, then you can edit the .pages document on your Lion machine with Pages ’09 from the iWork ’09 DVD. Pages documents can not be opened with TextEdit, but can be viewed with Preview.
On the otherhand, if the .pages document was created with Pages for iCloud beta, Pages v2.2.1 (IOS 7), or Pages v5+ on Mavericks, then your only recourse is to edit the document with Pages for iCloud beta. Since Fall 2013, Apple changed the .pages document format into something even more malevolently proprietary. Apple word processing products since this timeframe, are subsets of the Pages ’09 features/functionality, and will filter out content they do not support.
A Pages ’09 document is usually a compressed (zip) folder archive that looks like a regular file to the Finder. The newer Pages family of products only write out a package that to the Finder, also appears to be a regular file, but in reality it is a folder. The newer Pages documents must be zipped before placed on non-Apple filesystems.
