i'm new to iphones and a novice w/smartphone technology and my problem is very basic! i just got an iphone 4 and i simply want to learn how to personalize ringtones and alerts to play my favorite music! HELP!?!

Setting Ringtones
You can set the default ringtone for calls, and for Clock alarms and timers. You can also assign individual ringtones to contacts so you know who’s calling.
Set the default ringtone: In Settings, choose Sounds > Ringtone, then choose a ringtone.
Assign a ringtone to a contact: From Phone, tap Contacts and choose a contact. Tap Edit, then tap Ringtone and choose a ringtone.

I consider Time Capsule slow, mainly because it depends upon a wireless network for backing up. I tried it, but went back to the plug and play FW800 wired backup. Since this particular forum is for the MacBook Pro hardware, I'd suggest the following two forums to search for your answer (or ask questions):
Time Machine
Time Capsule
Since you want easy, the external hard drive is about as easy as it gets. Buy. Unpack. Plug into your Mac. Format (if you don't buy a Mac formatted one, which is unnecessary). Go to System Preferences>Time Machine. Choose the disk as the time machine. Turn on.

Novice in need of a bit of help

The last time I put together a website was with Frontpage, so
this is the first time i've attempted to do serious work in DW.
I'm currently at a stage where i've done the website layout
in PS, have sliced it up in IR and am editing it in DW. I've also
done a Flash menu that i'm trying to integrate into DW.
I've run into a number of problems though:-
1. I can't seem to move the images around in DW - the center
of the website will be taken up by a white portion (where all the
text will go) and i've tried to delete that and put it back in as a
background image. But when I do that, the image that's directly
below it (a grey bar for the bottom of the website) get's pushed
up. I can't seem to move any of the images around. Is there a way
of locking all of the images, bar the one that's currently
selected, that I don't want to immediately move around (e.g. with
different layers in PS)?
2. When I try to import the Flash menu into DW, I can't move
it around either. It just sits in the spot it was inserted in.
Additionally, I can't find a way of giving the Flash menu a
transparent background. I just need the Flash buttons to sit over
the background image. Is that something I need to correct in Flash
or can I do that in DW?
3. When I eventually get the Flash menu sitting nice and
pretty on top of the background image, how do I link the Flash
buttons to the different pages?
4. How do I insert a pdf d/l function into the website?
There'll be a tonne of documents on there (it's for a small
accounting firm) and the client wants the ability to offer some of
the documents as pdf downloads.
Any help/advice'd concerning these issues would be greatly
appreciated, thanks.

While this is not surprising, it's a VERY bad start. One
should never use
HTML written by a graphics program for 'serious' work. It's
fragile, and
poorly formed, and will break at the slightest provocation.
I'd guess that
in excess of 20% of all the posts here are directly related
to the use of
such HTML.
In addition, Flash menus are bad business. You create a
monster for
yourself, since DW will not manage the links in that menu, in
the event that
files are named or moved from their current location. They
are also
inaccessible to those using screen assistive devices, and are
just downright
bad.

You are suffering from a well-known disease, called "trying
to build HTML
pages without knowing HTML", often also called "trying to use
an HTML
authoring program as if it were Microsoft Word". I'm not
trying to be
snarky here. You will just need to learn some HTML. When you
do this, you
will quickly discover that HTML doesn't allow you to just put
things on the
page as if it were a graphics program, or a printed page
layout program.

See above. Also, to make Flash transparent is a trick. You
can use the
Flash
wmode parameter (however, Safari does not support this
properly!).

You have to do this in Flash, not HTML - another good reason
not to use
Flash Buttons.

Zip them, and link to the zipped document as you would to any
other file.
You can force a download, but that would require
server-scripting that I
don't think you are ready for yet.

Novice user needs help with associations (strange problem)

Background
=======
I am in the process of updating several Hyperion reports from version 8.3 to 9.3.
Each reports contains a number of sections/frames (eg. Home, Segments, Basic, Location, etc), and each frame contains several items - tables, pivot tables and charts.
Three out of the four reports are working perfectly, and when I connect to each using Dashboard Studio (DS) I can see that the associations for all the items are assigned correctly.
The problem
========
Report 4 only has associations assigned to two of the sections, but the basic functionality (selecting stuff to update charts and tables etc) is working.
I now need to enable the "export" and "sort" buttons in the remaining sections and the only way to do this is to associate the remaining sections using DS. After doing this via the "make a best-guess association" button, the basic functionality is now broken - many charts, pivots and tables have had their visible properties turned off.
Observations
=========
All four reports have the following lines of code at the top of each section:
if (ActiveDocument.Qiq_blnTemplateInitialized)
{ ActiveDocument.Qiq_clsGlobals.Qiq_base_Frame_OnActivate(this) }
If I remove this code in report 4 the basic functionality is restored but there are now issues with the drop-down lists not returning to their initial (unselected) states.
So I think the issue is related to associations and frames. Any thoughts?

I would suggest you try a fresh installation of Leopard on your computer. Make sure you back-up your files that you want to keep before proceeding.
Use the install disc that came with your computer, either by inserting the disc in your disc drive and restarting the computer while holding down the c key, or by initiating the installer from the window that opens automatically when the disc is inserted.
Follow the prompts once presented with the installation environment, but watch for an "Options" button in the lower-left corner of the window. When presented with this, choose "Erase & Install" and select "Mac OS Extended (Journaling)". Continue to the next screen.
Look for the "Customize" button in the lower-left corner. With this screen, you're allowed to select what's installed on your computer. You likely don't need all the printer drivers, and you may or may not need the extra languages packs. X11 is your choice, but I choose to have it installed despite never using it.
Start the installation, and when the installer starts "verifying" your install disc, click the Skip button. Don't interfere with the installation process, and the computer will restart on its own when finished.

I am an Apple novice and need to know how to back up my programs on MB Pro - Lion

I know how to back up programs on PC, but am new to Mac and would like some advice about how to best back up programs on my Macbook Pro (purchased second hand) without disks. Thank you in advance

If you purchased a MacBook Pro secondhand and it came with third-party software on it, note that you do not own that software without disks. It is illegal for you to use that software. If some of that software is useful to you, you should buy copies of it so that you can use it legally, and so that you can reinstall it should the need ever arise. (Note that there is no way to reliably reinstall copy software from a backup in the event of needing to do a clean reinstall. You would need the disks so you could do a clean reinstall of the apps as well.)
Also, note that the very first thing you should do with a secondhand machine is erase the hard drive and reinstall the system from scratch. You don't know what the original owner has done with that machine, and there could be malware on it. You should never trust a system from an unknown party.

Logic Novice in need of synthesizer help

I've just bought Logic 8 Express, mostly for its synthesizers
problem is i haven't been able to use them other than playing their set sound by adding i to my arrange list. I was hoping you could manipulate them like a real synth.
so how do i set up a window that has knbos and sliders for adsrs and lfos and oscillators etc?

Flash Novice Really Needs Help

I am just trying to write a small actionscript in Flash CS4 for a navigation button and I am really lost.
I turned Script Assist and can not figure out even the first line nor can I turn Script Assist off. Should I be using Script Assist and, if not, how do I deactivate it so that I can type directly into the text box?

I have added the Instance Name of btn1 on the button Properties Tab. All I need it to do is to go to another HTML page in the same directory named home.html. That it is not doing so I am guessing I have the reference to this page incorrect.

Novice Programmer Needs To Learn JSP

Hi All,
I am an experienced HTML programmer and my current employer would like me to learn JSP, JavaScript, and Java. They would prefer I learn JSP first.
I have no programming experience beyond HTML. What is the best way for me to learn JSP? Can I learn through books or will I need to take a class?
I appreciate any and all advice.

Maybe someone else will disagree with me, but from my experience your management does not have a clue.
JSPs may look like more fancy HTML pages, but in fact the use of them by an application server (such as Tomcat) causes them to be translated into Java code and they become servlets. So, you cannot do serious JSP work without being aware of what is going on in wrinting Java Servlets.
JavaScript, although the name starts with "Java" is a distinct language, used pretty much only in browsers as a way to have smarter action implemented in the browser. JavaScript shares a tantalizing amount of Java's syntax, but they are different.
For example, if we consider a form to be used by someone to prepare information to send to a web site, with JavaScript, you can do validation before the data is sent to the server and put up a message to the user with no network traffic required. With logic only in Java code on the server, you will need to send the data to the server to do validation, and then send back a rejection notice asking for the user to recreate the information.
The ugly truth (in my opinion) is that to be a good writer of Java-ish things to be shown in a browser, you need to know HTML, JavaScript, Java, and Java Servlets. (Pretty soon you will need to deal with database stuff.)
JSPs can make some tasks easier, but you need to know what is really going on or you can make errors at a high rate of speed.
JSPs are not required. You could write code on the server to create a stream of html output that is a combination of standard blocks of html code and content from other sources (usually databases). With JSPs however, you can write blocks of html and java code and the process of compiling a JSP turns it into Java code that generates the stream of html output wiith intermixed data. It is easier to do maintenance on a JSP than on a plain servlet.
For example, if you are doing a page that is a "shopping cart" for an e-commerce site, you can have the standard html lines to create the <table> and header rows. Then, you switch into Java, get the data, and loop through the entries. For each item in the list of contents you output a row of the html table. When you are through looping through the data, you exit the java code and have a plain old html ending of the table.

Help! java novice, i need to convert boolean to char

I have multiple checkboxes. Depending on what checkbox is selected, I need to convert that true boolean data to char data like 'L' or 'B'.
If anyone can, please help. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

I'm not quite sure what you mean - boolean has only 2 states, true and false. A char can be any character. How about:

someCharVar = "B";
Again, I don't understand what you're doing, but it seems that you need to test the values of the checkboxes, and based on the values, you need to assign values to some char variables. Don't waste you're time trying to converts booleans to chars - it ain't gonna happen.

A complete novice- still need help please!

I believe that Scheme is not a language natively supported by Xcode. Maybe there is a way to write a plugin for it, but I don't really think so and in particular I haven't seen one for LISP or Scheme.

Open() is not a static method either ...?!?!?!?

In SAP you would have to choose what area of SAP product you are compfortable using. Please read Product section on main page. As a starter I recommend you can start with Business One or Crystal Reports. Find a friend in your circle who use SAP products.
