A novice seeks help

I have two burning questions,
1      why do I keep loosing my wireless network connection (the system seems to forget my network data..and
2     why do some web pages display incorrectly (overlapping data and unable to select from page)

Hi Allan.
The network problem is 'general' I get connected, leave the machine and then get a report; not connected to network!! the iMac seems to forget my previous input and says my network isn't available, and yet shows the network in its list, insisting I tell it the Wireless SSID and password, even though I've told it to remember both.
The URL is 'currently' but not exclusively the Mail rewards scheme. https://mailrewardsclub.mailonline.co.uk/WeekendClub
I log in and get the card number entered, but the reward selection is jumbled and I cant select form the various options,
I see you're Stateside so won't know this newspaper URL or very likely be able to log in (without having registered) but I have experienced this problem elswhere, pages not displaying clearly, but overlapping items not allowing readability or where necessary selection of icons.
Cheers

  • Novice seeking help with PSD vs. JPEG in PSE12

I am changing from PSE8 to PSE12 and realized upon trying 12 today that PSE12 automatically saves my edited pictures in PSD format where PSE8 saved them in JPEG.  I don't use the organizer for catalogs, instead opening up folders where I've saved my pictures (e.g. Christmas 2013)and editing the photos I like in PSE8 and then saving them back in that same folder.  It may not be the 'right' way, but it works for me.  The picture I tried using PSE12 on, saved in the PSD format which isn't viewable in those folders (windows picture viewer is the default).  I truly only use PSE for improving pics I like and want to share/email, use as my desktip background, post to Facebook, and print for myself or gifts via uploading to a photo printing service (Mpix, Walmart, etc.)  Is there a way to have PSE12 default to saving as JPEG or should I be saving everything as PSD?  I get that PSD only works with PS and takes more space, but doesn't cause loss of quality of the pictures the way JPEG does ~ I'm just not sure it's important for the way I use PSE.  Help for a novice?

Save as Tiff instead. You don't really want to save as jpeg unless you're certain you're not going to edit anymore and as you've discovered, PSD isn't well understood by other programs. Tiff lets you keep your layers and not have any quality loss like you'd get from saving as jpeg over and over.

  • Novice seeks help with "Blocked Plug-In"

My MBA (2011, OSX 10.6.8) is telling me "blocked plug-in" whenever I try to play anything video.  Can't access Youtube, can't play stuff friends have sent to me.  The only change lately is that I downloaded a new version of Adobe a few days ago, but I think I was able to play a video on Youtube after that.  I am a 68 year old non-tecchie grandmother, and barely know how to turn on my macbook.  Can anyone help?  I'd like to play video of grandkidlets playing soccer...

"Blocked Plugin" is a tough one. Usually it can't be gotten around because Apple doesn't allow "downgrading" plugins.
These steps have worked in a very limited few cases.
Download the offline installer: Flash Player (Mac OS X)
Download the Shockwave FULL Installer here: http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/otherversions/
Save the files - DON'T run them yet.
    Go to: Mac HD/Library/Internet Plugins
Trash the Flash Player.plugin file and the flashplayer.xpt file from there.
    Go to: Mac HD/Library/PreferencePanes
Trash the Flash Player.prefPane from there.
    Go to: Mac HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe
Trash the Flash Player Install Manager folder and Shockwave 12 folder (if it's there)
Also in Mac HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe, trash the Macromedia folder (if it's there)
    Go to: [user]/Library/Preferences
    Trash the Macromedia folder
    Empty the trash.
Making sure your browser is fully quit, run the Flash Player Installer and the Shockwave Installer.
Open Safari and go to Safari>Preferences
Under the Security tab, Make sure "Allow all other plugins" is checked.
    Hopefully, that will do it.

  • Failing to install windows 8.1/7/ any kind of windows on my imac, seeking help foreal

Hey there. It's going to be a long post since I've messed with it for 4 days, and still no success even in the time I'm currently writing this message - the furthest I got is having tons of crashes and black screens. And now I can't even reclaim my lost harddrive space (resizing partitions doesn't work anymore).
I'll start with that I already tried to make Bootcamp work about a year ago, but then quit it out of no success and reverted all the changes. But this time my situation is different - I'm pretty sure something messed up in the middle and now I'm seeking help and answers to my questions. And here we go - one bright day I decided to install Windows 8.1 as a secondary boot system on my iMac for personal reasons. I went and added Bootcamp's ability to make a bootable USB on my mac by changing the plist file, and finally had the option to do so. Then got an ISO of Windows 8.1's installation, burned it to a DVD with disk utility (on the lowest speed) and here's already where my problems started. The disk failed to burn for some unknown reason, even though when I compared the contents it had the exactly same thing in both the ISO and the DVD. Weird isn't it? I still tried to boot it - and guess what? the DVD booted but it had the non-EFI interface (huge and pixelated). Anyway when I pressed next I had some weird driver errors, so I decided to use an USB instead (1 DVD wasted so far). I used Bootcamp to create a bootable USB with drivers and went to boot it. The USB booted perfectly fine under the name "EFI Boot" and then I reached the partitions screen.. Obviously I had weird errors again (GPT/MBR stuff). One tutorial on the web suggested creating a partition for the windows rather than using the Bootcamp pre-made one. I followed it by booting my main system, and using disk utility to delete the Bootcamp partition. Later on I booted again to the installation and created a new partition from the partitions screen. Windows created two partitions - a Microsoft reserved partition, and the secondary partition which is used for the windows files. After some time the windows finally booted for the first time. It took pretty long but went smooth - until it finally booted. Since here the problems returned - the Windows crashed every 5 minutes from a driver error (that's AFTER I installed the Apple drivers right after the system finished booting), I googled it and followed various tuts but it still wasn't fixed. I decided to quit using 8 since I liked 7 more anyway (I currently have it installed as a virtual system in Parallels), so I decided to install 7 instead of 8 since I never had any issues with it. Booted up my main system again - went to Bootcamp Assistant, USB creation. ISO file + drivers on the USB. I reboot. Holding ALT and... my mac can't even see the USB drive! Luckily I had 4 more installations (various ISOs) of Win 7, so I decided to try them. I tried ALL the Installations I in none of them my mac could see the USB drive (I wonder how my USB survived all this rewriting on it...) Again to Google we go. I researched a bit and realized that I'm missing a file called xboot64.efi in the "efi/boot" folder, which can be taken from windows. I tried extracting it from install.wim but none of my archiving apps could open it (I tried Unarchiver, Keka, 7zX, terminal's unrar command and more, none could!). I also realized my Win 8 installation had this file so I added it to the Win 7 USB. Now my mac could see the USB in the boot screen - and it booted. I saw the "loading files" screen, and after one minute of it... black screen. I waited 10 minutes. Then 30. An hour. Still a pure black screen. I thought something is wrong with my file, and read that this file is also found in an already installed Win 7, so I went to parallels and took it from here, then added it to my installation. Again my mac could see the USB, but still no luck. When I pressed enter to boot from it, nothing happened as if the boot screen was stuck - the drive was selected but it didn't do anything. I waited long time again and decided to stop waiting. I tried to burn another DVD, this time with Titanium Toast. Again the DVD failed to burn, and when I checked the content, it was the same as the ISO I tried to burn from (official ISO from Microsoft of Windows 7 Ultimate SP1). I went and booted it - this time I saw again "Windows" and "EFI Boot"in the boot screen, both with a disc icon. "EFI Boot" didn't load like the usb previously (loads forever), so I booted the "Windows" thing. The setup loaded, and finally I could see the installation window. Reached the partitions screen... and here the problems returned once again. An error along the lines of that Windows can't be installed on a GPT partition. Some tuts on YouTube and in Google suggested to simply format the problematic partition. And so I did - yet the problem wasn't fixed. After messing with all that for one more day - trying different installations, ways to boot the USB and DVDs, formatting the Windows partition etc, I decided it's time to stop messing with it since luck definitely isn't in my side when it comes to Bootcamp (and for the record, I never had any issues with OSX, but when I tried adding windows to it.. eh, you can guess.) I booted back to my normal system, and went to disk utility to delete the partitions. The Windows partition was deleted easily, but the Microsoft reserved one.. not so quite. (by the way when I boot into it I get a Win 8.1 error screen that tells me to repair the system, since I formatted the Win partition itself). Until this very moment I still can't delete the reserved partition and return my beloved 30gb that I lost because of the resizing (I can't resize my Mac HD partition).
I'm really desperate now. I tried everything and the furthest I got is getting a broken Windows 8.1 (which I deleted later), destroying 5 DVDs, shortening the lifespan of my USB drive, and googling errors the whole day for 4 days in a row. And now I can't even return my lost 30gb even after I decided to quit it. Please help or suggest me what to do, whether it's about how to successfully install Win 7 or to return my lost gigabytes, any kind of help is appreciated. If you managed to read so far, thank you for reading my post and I hope you'll be able to assist me and get me out of this situation.

Read the Boot Camp Help first. Boot Camp does not yet support Windows 8.1 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/system-requirements. If you insist on installing 8.1 use a virtual machine like parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox.

I'm getting an error message from Firefox that says, "Something is trying to trick Firefox into accepting an insecure update. Please contact your network provider and seek help." Do you know what is going on here--what this problem could be? (I do have the latest Firefox version already installed. I have previously received Firefox error messages that say "Firefox Update Failed." However, I already had the latest Firefox version installed when I received those error messages.)

Apparently this occurs when Firefox has problems with security certificates. There have been a few questions about this. I will try to get advice about this.
Apparently you are using Internet Explorer 9 (From your system details). Do you have Google Updater plugin installed on Firefox ?
(That been implicated in this sort of problem by one poster, and some users with the problem do have Google Updater, but some do not)

  • I just got a SSD for my late 2011 mp but I don't know how to change it, can I seek help in the Apple store?

I want to replace the HDD with SSD in my late 2011 Macbook pro, the question is I dont tools and knowledge about this job. So I am wondering if i can seek help from local Apple store?

Good choice! I have one installed in my 13" MBP. The installation is not too difficult, but it is not trivial. I'm pretty experienced with this stuff so just take your time and carefully follow the instructions. You'll be working with tiny little screws that are easy to drop and/or lose. I suggest using magnetic tipped tools. There are a couple of screws in some tight areas that are a little difficult to remove.
Be particularly careful to check all the snap-on cablings when you reassemble. There is one you don't remove during installation that is near the top part of the optical drive and covered over. When I was tugging on the drive to remove it I apparently popped the cable under the cover. Turned out it was for the WiFi and BT. I had to disassemble the back cover and look hard for something I couldn't see. I just happened to press on the covered area where the cable connected and heard the snap of it reconnecting. If it weren't for that I would have never figured out why my WiFi and BT stopped working!

  • Seeking help with software upgrade questions for my PowerBook G4

I am seeking help/advice for a very low tech guy. I upgraded my PowerBook G4 (ancient I know but I have trouble with our thow away society), to Leopard 10.5.2. However, my iDVD no longer works. I plan on upgrading to iLife'08, but based on the system requirements, I am not certain all of the features (i.e. iMovie'08) will work on my older processor. Before I upgrade to iLife, can anyone tell me if I should do it and if they will work on my all the features will work on my PowerBook G4?

Many prefer iLife'06 to '08, but we went from '05 to '08.
You are correct in that iMovie'08 will not run on your Book, but when you install iLife'08 you are given the opportunity to download iMovie'06 for free.
I can't vouch for it fixing your iDVD however.

  • Complete novice needs help

    Hi folks
I hope you can indulge me. I am a mature student studying with the Open University in the UK. In order to complete my degree I have to produce a (small) project (doesn't have to have full functionality) based on a Network application. I am limited to using Java and to some extent the software provided for me, which in this case is JBuilder3.5 (yes I know it's old!). I can, within reason download further software providing my tutor is ok with it but here's the rub I have no idea what I actually need. There is so much to read through and I am feeling a bit thick because I cannot pin anything down.
This is where I would appreciate any help from you experts. My project subject is a browser which can interpret web pages and then configure them to be displayed in a fromat that is prefered by the user not the author. I can build the GUI but I am stuck when it comes to building the functionality behind it. ie what packages do I need to download that can recognise XML/HTML tags in order to rearrange the display? Am I even on the right track? Is it actaully possible?
Because the project is only worked over a small period I don't need full functionality but have elected to deal with input/output fields, text placemnt/display/font (infromationl), graphic placement/deletion. I may also be alowed to update my version of Jbuilder.
I would be so grateful if somebody could at least point me in the right direction. I need to add here that I feel so stupid that I need replies in very plain english :o)

    Hi ddossot
Saw your note about using a proper IDE unfortunately I am obliged to use the one provided by my UNI. Reason being the markers of my project may not be up to date with other IDE's. Though I may be allowed to use a newer version of JBuilder. I am waiting to hear if I have permission to do so.
Here's another thick question. from what I remember, when studying Java last year, it has a number of libraries that can be imported to a project. When I download the HTML and XML stuff are they just added to the libraries already in place and if so how is it done.
ps hope they also have tutorials with them for the coding :o(
One last question; am I in the right forum for this sort of query or is there a novice one for thicko's like me? :o)

  • Novice needs help: inconsistent recording volume ("flutter")?

    Hello All,
I'm new to Audition and have been struggling with my recording quality: I'm on a newer dual core Toshiba Qosimio multimedia laptop running Win 7 (64bit) and using a standard desk mic. I read the faq and help files on recording but still remain baffled about this. I'd greatly appreciate some help:
When recording music in Audition (for example: one strum of a guitar chord), I get a kind of fluttering: I don't hear the whole continous chord's sound. There are subtle 'dropouts' of the sound (like it has inconsistent volume). Now, I'm new at this so I'm probably not using the correct terminology..so I posted a wav file to let you hear:
    http://home.comcast.net/~samiri/director/trash/InconsistentAudio1.wav
When using this same mic in my older PIV laptop running Win XP, the record quality is fine. Also, when I downloaded Audacity (free audio program) I think I hear the same fluttering..so maybe there is some way I need to set the recording (input) preferences on this machine.
Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

Ah, I had a recent laptop with Connexant Smart Audio, but recently replaced it.
There is a separate Smart Audio Control Panel that I think is accessible elswhere from the Windows Control Panel. I found it almost totally incomprehensible, but seem to remember that there was a way of switching between two options, one simpler than the other.
I would also go into the advanced playback settings to see if there are "enhancements" there. Some of these may affect recording.
As I said before, the only approach with all of this is to find all the various audio contol panels, switch off any effects or enhancements and set all the default sample rates for record and playback to the rate you will be using. Note that the various audio control panels may or may not stay in sync, so it's as well to go round the loop(s) a few times. Do check there is nothing hidden in the "enhancements" area by making sure you scroll down all the options if there are more than just one or two. Note that the Windows audio Control Panel  has to be closed and re-opened before you can trust what it says.
None of this is the fault of Audition, which just records what is fed to it. It is the fault of Microsoft that there is a broken sample rate converter in Windows 7 and whoever designed the Connexant audio gui does need to be re-educated, I think.
It would, of course, be very sensible to seek out an external decent usb or similar audio interface.

  • Network Expansion - Novice Needs Help

I would appreciate some guidance with a change I need to make to my wireless network. What I currently have is working fine, but I'm pretty much a novice at this.
My current network consists of two computers. Computer A is a desktop connected to a WRT54G2 wireless router via patchcord. This is my primary computer, used to create the network using the CD that came with the router. Computer B is a laptop that connects to the the network with a WPC54G wireless notebook adaptor. Both computers run Windows XP, and the network is working well. The network uses WEP security.
I am ready to add Computer C to the network. Computer C is a desktop and will become my primary computer. Computer C is also running Win XP. I want to connect it via patchcord to the WRT54G2 router, replacing computer A. I have purchased a WUSB54GC USB adaptor to connect computer A to the wireless network.
I'm not sure where to begin. Do I need to first uninstall any Linksys software from both computers A & B, in order to start all over? Can I just unplug computer A from the router, plug in computer C, and keep going? Any suggestions on how to approach this change without too much gnashing of teeth and pulling of hair is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

There is no need to to uninstall the software of router from any computer.
You need to connect the computer C to router with a chord and on Computer A  connect the adapter and install the set-up disk for it.

  • VBScript Novice needs help

I am a novice at VBscript..I have been assigned to send email of file(s) as a notice in the subject field from multiple folders. I am lost as to how can this be done..Any help would be much appreciated...thanks

First it is not possible to understand what you are asking.  Please read your question and try to understand why it is too vague.
To learn how to use VBScript you can start here:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/scriptcenter/dd772284
If you have no scripting exerience I suggest using PowerShell as it is easier for beginners. VBScript does not have a mail command and PowerShell does.
Send-MailMessage -to xxxx -from xxxx -subject 'my subject' -body 'here is my message'
Do you see how easy it is?
You can also look here for pre-written scripts:

  • I/T Professionals seeking help in forums

Lately in the Adobe Reader forum, there has been a rash of people asking questions about "deployment" of updates and how to modify the patches for pushing over a network.
It's just my opinion, but this is a "user to user" forum for everyday people who are having issues with the software and need help without having to pay for technical support.
Someone who is "pushing a patch" over a network to hundreds of end users is:
    Not an everyday user.
Being paid by someone else to push the updates.
Being paid to modify the patches so they can do so.
In such cases, there is an employer who is not only mandating the things stated above but reaping the benefits from having a professional do them for them.
These employers should be paying Adobe Support to bring their people up to speed on how to "push" patches over the network in the way the employer wants it done
I'm not a network administrator (other than my five systems at home), I'm not an I/T professional (yet), and I don't write C++ or create APIs.I'm just a ten year Windows user, eight year Mac user and I have worked with nearly every product Adobe has made over the years... some more than others.
If I was an employer and discovered that my I/T "professional" was seeking the advice of a guy in his bedroom on the same computer he takes night classes on... for something that will affect every system in the company... I'd be questioning the hiring and retention of said individual.
Am I wrong to tell these people that they should be going to (paid) technical support for their questions?

Adobe has many products that do not cater to "everyday users", but to an
audience of professional users. Those professional users have just as
many questions as everyday users (although I hope they know How To Ask
Questions The Smart Way ). These forums are just as much a place for
them to ask their peers, as they are for everyday users to ask their
    peers.
Take for example the mass deployment question. Do you think it is
realistic that everybody who manages an infrastructure with dozens or
more systems to have a support contract with Adobe? I am sure Adobe and
their shareholders would love it if every educational institution and
SME had a support contract, but I do not consider that a realistic
    situation.
Somebody else mentioned LiveCycle. Sure LiveCycle ES is a big Enterprise
product aimed squarely at the professional. (Although LiveCycle Designer
is included with every Acrobat / CS suite.) So those professionals use
the forums to communicate with their peers. And every LiveCycle training
from Adobe tells all students to go to the forums when they have problems.
If people post in the wrong forum, redirect them. But if they have
questions about Adobe products, these forums are the right place to ask
them even if they are not "everyday users".
