A Patch to SQL Developer 1.5.4
For those of you who have been involved with SQL Developer through a number of releases, you'll be aware that we have wanted to take advantage of the Check for Updates facility to update releases. We have established that the mechanism is not effective when there are structural any changes to some core functionality and as such we now require you to do a full download and reinstall to upgrade a release. However, we can use the mechanism to patch a feature.
We have now released a patch to SQL Developer 1.5.4. You must have SQL Developer 1.5.4 installed to see the patch. To download and install the patch, use Help -> Check for Updates. Check the Oracle SQL Developer option to list the patch. Select to install and complete the wizard.
This patch fixes LDAP, Import and the 9i, 11g query performance issues recently discussed on the forum.
The patch is made up of two parts, the file sqldeveloper.1.5.4.jar will be installed into the \sqldeveloper\ide\lib\patches folder and the file oracle.sqldeveloper.patch.jar into the \sqldeveloper\sqldeveloper\extensions folder. To remove the patch, delete these two files and restart SQL Developer
Regards
Sue
____Thanks for the link. I'm not quite sure how or when the patch got installed (Attempt #: 1) Local install as user - cycle - no joy; 2) Local install as root - cycle - root is patched, user is not; 3) Local install as user - cycle - MIGRATE ! - WAHOO !). I'm starting to dream about Thomas Alva Edison (perspiration vs. inspiration) sitting in a lotus-type squat chanting "Per Ardua Ad Astra".
P.S. For the Linux curious here's how I ran as root :
1) Start Konqueror in "Super User Mode" (see System -> File Manager);
2) Walk the dir. tree to /opt/sqldeveloper (from the RPM install);
3) Press "F4" to spawn a shell window;
4) Type in "./sqldeveloper.sh" (w/o quotes) and press "Enter".
This way avoids multiple logins and the use of su / sudo .

Applying Patch to SQL Developer 1.5.4
I've downloaded and installed SQL Developer 1.5.4 from OTN, and (eventually, after sorting out the "Type the full pathname of a J2SE installation..." prompt) got it running. Help -> Check for Updates shows that "Oracle SQL Developer Patch 1 11.1.1.59.47" is available for installation. After installing this patch with no reported errors and SQL Developer restarted, Help -> About -> Version shows that Oracle IDE and Versioning Support 1.5.4.59.40 are installed. These have not changed from the original installation.
Have I successfully installed the patch? Thanks again, K. I don't see either of those jar's. Another attempt to download and install the patch (Oracle SQL Developer Patch 1 11.1.1.59.47) appears to succeed (ie, no reported errors), but I still can't see evidence of installation under Help -> About -> Extensions as per your post. Restart SQL Dev and another run of Help -> Check for Updates tells me that the patch is available for download and installation...

SQL Developer Keeps finding updates (1.2.1.32.02)
Hi,
I have just patched my SQL Developer (Windows XP Pro) (extensions tab shows version 1.2.1.32.00) and the automatic update wizard keeps finding a new patch (1.2.1.32.02).
It says it's installed it, but after a restart (including an additional manual one) my extensions tab shows version 1.2.1.32.00 and the update wizard finds the new update again.
Help! (or is it the "Groundhog Day" patch).
Thanks,
PaulHi Matt,
Yes, there is a new Check for Updates. It should force the second restart we require and it should update the front panel in the Help -> About to 1.2.1.32.05. If you were on a 1.2.1.32.00 build then the only extension that is updated under your extensions list is the SQL Developer extension, which is 1.2.1.32.05.
You can run the Check for Updates against a 1.2.0.29.98 build (i.e. the initial 1.2 release) or against the new 1.2.1.32.00 build. In both situations had you run the Check for Updates last week, this update will clear the issues you might have encountered.
You should not keep getting prompted for repeated updates. While it's starting to feel like my stock answer these days, please restart your install and this should clear.

Expected Date of Next Release of Sql Developer
Hi Dev Team,
Not sure whether this has been asked before; but wanted to check to see if you have decided on the next Release data of SQL Developer if so is there a sitefor beta checking a nightly build or so ?
-Thanks
AWell, sometimes I resist coming to the forum in the morning, it's not always a good way to start a day with grumbles, but this morning this thread made me laugh. K is correct, Oracle does not provide dates of releases+. Typically we provide a 6 month window for a next release, but sometimes we are required, legally only to provide a year span. This protects you as the customer and us, as a development organization. Case in point last were our releases last year, when we effectively rolled our SQL Developer 2.0 and 2.1 release together and only released SQL Developer 2.1 at the end of the year.
What made me laugh today was the specific date provided. Nowhere in our internal plans for the year are there any specific dates noted. There are ranges and targets and these may change.
The date provided is neither accurate nor useful. Please disregard.
What is true is that we typically follow a major release with a full patch and we plan to do the same this time. You can expect a patch to SQL Developer 2.1 within the next few months. We are gathering and fixing bugs that we have found since production, bugs that were identified and did not make production and bugs noted on the forum. Not all will make the patch, but it's worth putting in as many fixes as we can before releasing the patch. So no date for SQL Developer 2.1.1 (the patch release) and definitely no known dates for SQL Developer 2.2, regardless of what you hear on the forum, from an "internal source" or on the wires.

Can you run SQL Developer like this:
sqldeveloper -J-Dide.extension.log.to.console=true
and see if you get any additional output on the console?
There is a bug in the base IDE platform that can lead to this message when you have a broken extension in ide/extensions or sqldeveloper/extensions. The extra logging provided by the above switch should turn on diagnostics that will help identify which extension is causing the problem.
FWIW, the base IDE problem has been fixed already, and the fix should be consumed by a future release of SQL Developer. The fix ensures that a single broken extension will not take down the whole product.
Thanks,

Hi,
<p>I have just posted the announcement that the latest patch release for SQL Developer is now available. The updated Check for Updates should be available from 1pm PST (16 Aug). So if you are ahead of the game, please give this another hour.
<p>The Check for Updates does an automatic restart of SQL Developer, but you still need to do a second restart or you will not see the SQL Worksheet.
<p>Finally we have updated the Statement of Direction with the main themes we plan to address in the next release.
<p>For all document and download links, please see the main SQL Developer page on OTN.

Unable to donwload Oracle SQL Developer 2.1 Patch 1 - getting a 404
Hi,
I'm trying to download Oracle SQL Developer 2.1 Patch 1, but I'm getting a 404.
Here is the page I'm downloading from:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/sql/index.html
Here is the link to the zip file:
http://download.oracle.com/otn/java/sqldeveloper/sqldeveloper-2.1.1.64.45-no-jre.zip
Could anyone point me to a working link?I have just been to the site and downloaded the software. This is is always available and certainly not been down for 40 days, we track the daily downloads. You maybe restricted by a firewall setting on your side which does not permit you to download the software. There are occasions when there are issues, but generally if you try again in an hour they're resolved. We will not put the software on a rapid share site and for anyone else to do so would be violating licensing restrictions and is as such not legal.

Fixed the download linkSue,
I get the following error when unzipping the archive:
Extracting oracle.javacore.jar
bad CRC bb93c0d4 (should be 1f5b6bb6)
Warning: the size of the extracted file (7484702) does not match the uncompressed size (7484661) recorded in the zip file
It's the Windows version including the JRE.
Although probably my download went wrong I'd suggest to double check the ZIP-file on your server.

SQL Developer 1.1 Patch 3 still does not work on 64-bit Windows
There has been a long-standing problem with SQL Developer 1.1 not working on 64-bit versions of Windows. When sqldeveloper.exe is executed, a very unhelpful error dialog stating "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc00000018). Click on OK to terminate the application" is displayed.
While there is a workaround that involves running the sqldeveloper.bat file in the \sqldeveloper\bin subdirectory, it is a bit inconvenient and requires the user to discover this workaround. Furthermore, SQL Developer 1.0 did not have this problem, so it is a bit puzzling as to why the problem was introduced with SQL Developer 1.1 and why it is still not fixed with the latest patch.I can confirm that we have a fix for this problem. I'm not sure when this fix will be available in SQL Developer.
The bug was introduced in 1.1 due to optimizations in the way that the native Windows launcher works to better support products like SQL Developer.
Thanks,

How to set default path for file open in SQL Developer
Hi,
I am new to Oracle SQL Developer. Everytime when I open a file, it will default to the install directory. It is hurtingmy hand because I have to click back to the folder where I put my sql statements.
Is there any way to set the Home or Work button to point to the location I like? or add anther button to point to my folder? I just don't want to click 5 to 10 times to open a file. There are a few things. One is that you can set a working directory for any files you run in the SQL Worksheet i.e. @myfile.sql will pick up this directory.
You can also set a preference for exporting files.
Also if you use File -> Open, it should remember where you were the last time, so you hunt the first time, then it remembers for the next time. There is a bug for ctrl-O that always goes back to the original directory, but that has been fixed for the next patch release, so ctrl -O will also remember where you were last.
The differences here are because we are dependent on the IDE from JDeveloper, and so we don't have full control over the Save and Open dialogs. We are aware of this frustration and are planning to change this for a future release.

SQL Developer High Memory Consumption 3.2.20.09.87
Hello,
I have been using SQL developer for quite some time and had initially had problems in the past with high memory consuption when I use this tool.
I have received and applied advice from this forum and while it had helped a little, the majority of the high memory consuption remained an issue.
I finally got more time to dig around and try to specifically isolate where the problem seems to be coming from and here is what I found.
*1)* I have removed the Check for Updates feature
*2)* I have turned off many of the extensions except for DBA Navigator, Real Time SQL Monitoring, SearchBar and Snippet.
*3)* When I start a fresh SQL Developer Session and initiate a Oracle Connection the application consumes roughly 148 meg fo RAM
*4)* When I open my Windows Task Manager and watch the memory allocated to SQL Developer I notice it goes up when I move my mouse over the SQL Developer tool and When I run through menus at roughly 5k a second or so and the memory is never released back to the system.
*5)* When I run a Large SQL to the grid the memory jumps by about 100 meg or so and will continue to do so every time I repeat the SQL until SQL Developer consumes roughly 748 meg of RAM.
*6)* 748 Meg of RAM seems to be the number when SQL Developer (with one Oracle connection) no longer continues to consume more and then not return the memory to the system.
Is there a way to have SQL Developer automatically clear up it's active memory usage without closing it down and restarting it?
Why does SQL Developer continue to consume more and more memory just from moving your mouse over it and/or by navigating menus?

Edited by: ERPDude on Feb 28, 2013 2:46 PMAces!!! You nailed it Gary...
Thank you.
I applied fixed noted in Re: Reduce SQLDeveloper memory footprint with JDK 1.7
For others, to summarize my changes.
product\11.2.0\client_3\sqldeveloper\sqldeveloper\bin\sqldeveloper.conf
AddVMOption -XX:+UnlockExperimentalVMOptions
AddVMOption -XX:+UseG1GC
AddVMOption -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=50
AddVMOption -XX:GCPauseIntervalMillis=200
AddVMOption -XX:MaxPermSize=128M
AddVMOption -Xms50M
AddVMOption -Xmx384M
AddVMOption -XX:MinHeapFreeRatio=10
AddVMOption -XX:MaxHeapFreeRatio=10
product\11.2.0\client_3\sqldeveloper\ide\bin\ide.conf
comment the following two lines as shown below
#AddVMOption -Xmx640M
#AddVMOption -Xms128M
Now SQL Developer runs at roughly 500 meg.
I guess the only thing I have left to ask others reviewing this would be if there is a way to get these memory values down without having much adverse impacts on SQL Developer based on newer JVM switches/functionalities.
The posts that drove these changes are old from a technologoical perspective :) 2010.

Code insight not working in sql developer 1.1.0.23
i just downloaded today. insight options all checked in preferences section. popup time set to less than a second. i get nothing to work in sql worksheet or while modifying a package body.
Hello,
You should see things from this side sometimes ;-) It's a small team, working hard, very focused! Yes, there is indeed a sense of urgency and we are testing a patch SQL Developer 1.1 at the moment. There is always the battle between wanting to get an updated release to you, the community, quickly, and delaying to ensure what you get is good.
Code insight, performance and many other issues have been addressed in this patch.
As for your other point, we want the tool to be lightweight, easy to install, easy to use with a clear user interface. Perhaps there'll be a new battle when adding features, but that's the goal.
Regards

Tnsnames.ora file does not seem to load in SQL Developer
I've really tried my best to figure this out on my own ... through the Help, this forum, and Internet in general. I apoligize in advance for having to ask this, since I'm sure this is a common issue. This particular form entry was really close:
Database Connections will not load tnsnames.ora
But, I just can seem to figure out why, or where entries from my tnsnames.ora file are loading into SQL Developer.
- I have the TNS_ADMIN system environment variable defined to the directory where tnsnames.ora is stored - C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\client_1\NETWORK\ADMIN.
- I do not see a TNS tab as the forum entry above indicates anywhere in SQL Developer - This may be my problem.
It seems that this issue could be cleared up with better directions on how to import tnsnames.ora entries into SQL Developer. Is there any specific direction on how to get your tnsnames.ora file setup correctly with SQL Developer running on Windows XP - Besides the Help which mentions the setup of TNS_ADMIN, but doesn't really tell you what the expected result is, or where the entries will be, or how to verify this is working?
Any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave

After testing in our environment, it appears that SQL Developer 1.5.1 (5440) does in fact ignore the TNS_ADMIN environment variable and ONLY looks in the Oracle Home directory (network/admin). We define a central network location for our tnsnames file and have the tns_admin setup to point there instead of locally for our users.
When selecting to add a new connection (in 1.5.1, it works in previously releases... meaning 1.2.something) and selecting TNS, the drop-down remains empty. However, if I exit SQL Developer and then copy the tnsnames file to the local network/admin directory I can then re-launch SQL Developer and the drop-down is populated. Exiting SQL Developer again, deleting the local copy of tnsnames, and then launching SQL Developer yet again results in the drop-down being empty.
All other Oracle-related applications function as expected (as they have for years) using the TNS_ADMIN environment variable.

Data Miner Extension in SQL Developer 4.0 EA3 Release: EA3 Repository Migration Failure
The Data Miner extension in the SQL Developer 4.0 EA3 release fails when attempting to migrate the repository to EA3. This posting contains instructions on how to recover from this failure as well as to successful migrate the repository from EA2 to EA3. There are no problems when just installing a fresh Data Miner repository.
Sorry about the difficulty if this has caused you any problems.

Failure message displayed in log when migrating to EA3:
Error report -
ORA-06550: line 96, column 40:
PLS-00382: expression is of wrong type
ORA-06550: line 96, column 7:
PL/SQL: Statement ignored
06550. 00000 - "line %s, column %s:\n%s"
*Cause: Usually a PL/SQL compilation error.
*Action:
Instructions on how to recover from failure and continue using original version of SQL Developer:
1) Execute the following sql as SYS in order to allow the Data Miner repository to be open for use again:
UPDATE ODMRSYS.ODMR$REPOSITORY_PROPERTIES
SET PROPERTY_STR_VALUE = 'LOADED'
WHERE PROPERTY_NAME = 'REPOSITORY_STATUS';
COMMIT;
2) During attempted migrationto EA3 failed, access priviliges to the Data Miner repository are revoked from users. In order to use Data Miner again, these grants must be reapplied. You can either use the UI guided process to accomplish this, which requires the SYS password, or you can run the usergrants.sql script, again as the SYS user. For instructions on how to run the usergrants.sql script, or any adminstrative script, review the instructions contained in the install_scripts_readme.html file. You can find this file in the SQL Developer directories created when you unzipped SQL Developer. It is located in the following relative directory: \<SQL Developer Install Directory>\sqldeveloper\dataminer\scripts.
Instructions on how to successfully migrate to EA3.
If you have already attempted to migrate to EA3 and failed, then you need to perform the recovery instructions noted above, after which you can continue with the instructions below.
If you have not yet attempted to migrate to EA3, then just following the instructions below.
1) Replace all contents the script file createxmlworkflowsbackup.sql with specification contained at the end of this posting. The file to edit can be found in the \<SQL Developer Install Directory>\sqldeveloper\dataminer\scripts directory.
2) After completing the edit to createxmlworkflowsbackup.sql, you can proceed with the UI guided migration or perform the migration using the appropriate migration script. Review the install_scripts_readme.html file in the /dataminer/scripts directory for instructions on how to perform the migration using the script. For the UI migration, simply open any user connection in your Data Miner navigator, and you will be prompted to perform the migration.

I believe excel only holds 15 digits of precision.
