A PC, a Mac and an iPod

I have two computers that have purchased music in my iTunes. One computer is a PC, the other is a Mac. I have a new iPod and want to put music from both computers on it (because the songs aren't the same on each computer).
Given the two different types of computers, is this possible? If so, how do I do it?

Probably the easiest way to use an iPod on both Mac and Windows computers is to format the iPod (using iPod Updater) using the PC. This will force your iPod to use the Windows file system (FAT32) which both the Mac and PC can read from and write to without the help of additional software. Of course then all your software updates for the iPod will have to be done on Windows. If you need to use a Mac (HFS+) formatted iPod on a Windows PC, you'll need to install some 3rd party software such as XPlay 2.0 (which you can get from MediaFour Software). This will enable your Windows PC to read a Mac-formatted iPod.
However, please be aware that Apple does not officially support cross platform use.
Then, you would have to have your iPod set to manual transfer as this explains.

  • How to use multiple computers (mac) and an ipod ???

Ok, i am very very new to mac's and ipods, i just got one yesterday. Me and my girl both have one and use it on 2 different macs. She had purchased some tv shows, and i would like to put them on my ipod as well. they are purchased so we do own them correct??? So i finally figured out how to add them to my ipod from her mac, by switching to manual mode. But than once i hook my ipod up to my mac, it automatically delets them. Because i am guessing i am in automatic mode. Can someone help me to prevent this. I do not want to change my mac out of auto mode, because it is a pain in the rear to manually add everything to the ipod. Please help???
Also since i had changed my ipod out of automatic mode once and placed it into manual mode once, and back again to auto i always have to eject my ipod. How do i set it up like it was out of the box, in auto mode and that i do not have to eject it from itunes.
Thanks so much, i know that i am a nube at all of this...

You can't do this. If you want to update your iPod from multiple machines, you NEED to be in manual mode on both computers. There's no way around this.
Here's an article from Apple which explains how to do it.

When you switched to manual mode, it automatically enables Disk Mode on your iPod.
If you don't want to keep ejecting the iPod, then you need to disable Disk Mode. You can do this in iTunes preferences.
Then again, one you go back to manual mode... which you need to do to use you r iPod with more than one computer... it's going to enable disk mode again anyway.

  • Problem: I have a New Mac and my iPod is formatted for Windows

My old computer (PC with Windows) crashed and took all my music with it.
I got a new computer, a Mac. I have looked at many different programs for moving music from the iPod to the computer and many are appealing (Podworks and iRip). However, they do not seem to be working because my computer is not recognizing my iPod. I set my iPod into disk mode by following the instructions on this website. However, that has not helped.
The problem may be in the fact that my iPod is formatted for Windows and I am no longer using Windows. I cannot reformat my iPod for a Mac at this point because my iPod is the only location of my music. Reformatting it now would erase all my music and I have no backup!!
When I am plugging my iPod into the computer, I am holding the Option+Command keys to make sure that the iPod does not automatically sync. Is this necessary? I ask this because my iPod has no connection with this computer's iTunes and I have doubts that it would automatically sync. It seems that by holding the Option+Command Keys I am preventing the computer from recognizing the iPod. A brief iPod icon appears on the desktop and then disappears.

Have you failed to maintain a backup?

  • What is difference between Numbers for Mac and for iPod Touch?

Trying to decide pros/cons of getting Numbers for my iMac vs. just for my iPod Touch? Obviously, one is cheaper than the other.  Dumb question, but I guess I cannot use Numbers downloaded from App Store on my iMac; just on my iPod Touch?  And, can I just buy Numbers for iMac; seems only option is to buy as part of package under iWorks (don't need Pages or Keynote for the home).

    (1) Numbers for iOS and Numbers for OSX are completely different products building files using the same format.
    (2) You may buy Numbers as a single application thru Mac App Store. The application Mac App Store is delivered with Lion.

  • One Library, one mac, and 2 ipods

ok, so can someone PLEASE hlep me set this up. I've tried the instructions via apple and ended up with duped songs and missing songs, ones that are indicated by an exclamation point. what the **** is going on? i've read the many posts and can't seem to get this to work. Here's what I want to do:
    1) share my entire library with other accounts on this mac.
    2) allow users of this mac to update whatever songs they want on their iPod
    3) allow them to burn cds
    4) do NOT allow them to delete songs or playlists.
Can someone show me a tried and proven way to get this done?!

    Question 1 - read this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1202
    Question 2:
Unless she has another user in Windows itself, this setup isn't going to work. If she wants her own library and not deal with any headaches, have her create a new user in Windows.

  • Two Macs and One iPod Touch?

What is the best way to use an iPod Touch with 2 Macs?
I mean in terms of keeping the contacts, iTunes library, and iFoto library etc sync'ed between 2 Macs? I don't want to use MobileMe because of the size of the libraries and being able to work offline.
I am considering buying a MacBook Pro for traveling. But at home I use my MacPro.
    Thanks much for your help.
    Olaf

Personally, I have my iTunes and iPhoto on an external hard drive that I can plug into whatever computer I'm using at the time.
Or you can search this forum and/or iTunes help for "two computers, one Touch," "using the Touch with two computers," or something along those lines, and you should find some information. I can't remember, but I think I found info in iTunes help.

  • Why does my Verizon Iphone 5 personal hotspot sometimes not work?  I have to keep turning it on and off for it to come up.  This is a problem that I am having when connecting to a computer PC and MAC and a Ipod Touch and my Ipad.

This issue is making me start to think that I have a defective peice of equipment.  It seems as though i have to restart the hotspot multiple times for it to work and when it does work it drops the device after being tether to it, and then I have to start the whole process over again.

I HAVE RESOLVED THIS!!  The problem was that I was signed in to iCloud on my iphone with an old Apple ID and using a different Apple ID on my pc. I signed out of iCloud on my phone, then re-signed in with the same id as the iCloud on my pc. Presto chango. All is well.

  • My mac and pc both died. How do sync music from our iphone and 3 ipods onto a new pc?

A year ago my MAC just up and died.I have all the music that was on that mac on my iphone.
We couldn't buy a new mac, so we started using an old pc. My kids built a large itunes library on that computer which now has died.
We have another new pc. How do we combine all the music on 1 iphone (last syched for music on a mac) and 3 ipods (last synch on a different pc) onto this new computer?
When I want to sync,it wants to erase what is on my phone!
    Help!

Apps are 'registered' to a particular account so if they won't transfer this is suggestive of them being downloaded to the phone from another account.
If you are 100% sure they were bought on the relevant account active on iTunes and the iPhone (check in the account purchase history) then you can download them again for free.
If you get charged again, then its fairly certain that they were not bought on that account.

  • ITunes wiped all but iTunes purchased music from my iPad mini and my iPod nano instead of transferring the cd uploads into iTunes. Is there any way of recovering my music.  Very disappointed!

Initially things worked fine. I was very pleased. I had my music library in itunes, on my Ipod nano, and a thumbdrive to back up most of my music.
When I tried to sync the music from itunes onto my new ipad mini last week it deleted the albums in itunes leaving me with only purchased itunes items in the account, On the new Ipad mini CD's from my collection could not be played but they were in fact listed. My new mac will not read the music files I backed up onto a thumb drive or show the uploaded CD music collection. Additionally when I logged into itunes with out any devices connected from my PC the itunes account was completely up to date with my CD's and purchase items in Itunes. As soon as I tried to sync it with my Ipad mini that virtual access to the collection was wiped out leaving only purchased items.
By trying to upload CD music from my Ipod nano into Itunes (originally uploaded into itunes from CD's and  synced to the ipod nano in the first place, taking more than a weeks time), I am prompted to reset the entire ipod nano to factory settings (it gives no other option).  I was following the instructions emailed to me from the applecare team. This was my only recourse for recovery of the lost music files, the only device left that had my album collection aside from the owned CD's. Now the ipod nano is being wiped clean and left with only the itunes purchased music ( same thing that happened with the itunes account and now the Ipad). When I disconnect the ipod nano to see if there are any albums still left on the device, it gives me an error that it was improperly disconnected.
I just wanted to add the music from itunes to my new mac and the new ipad mini. Instead I have lost all of my uploaded CD's and now have only purchased items in itunes, the new ipad mini, the new mac, and the ipod nano.  I have to  re-upload my entire music library into itunes/icloud from CD's again and hopefully be able to then sync it with my new devices.
However it may be better to buy the itunes purchased music on CD's from a store, Cut my losses while I can and never buy anything from apple or itunes again. Atleast I will not have my entire music collection wiped out for moving it between my own devices. Itunes match doesn't do **** either. I have wasted alot of hard earned cash on devices products and itunes purchases by converting to apple products and services.
    What a big mistake.
Very dissapointed with the interface. Very Very Dissapointed!

Had the same issue when I changed computers.  I backed up my I-tunes files, including CDs, but I-Tunes will not recognize anything but Apple purchases now.  There were 300+ CDs in that original catalog.

  • How do I manually transfer music from my MAC to my iPod Nano (4th Generation)?

Recently, I have encountered a problem when trying to drag and drop songs and playlists from my Mac to my iPod Nano (4th Generation). I click on the file in my iTunes Library window but it won't allow me to copy it to my iPod. I've restarted both my Mac and my iPod but it hasn't helped. Do I need to download an update?Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Do I need to download an update?
Use Software Update to update iTunes if needed.  Read the iTunes/iPod Summary page to find out if your iPod Nano needs any updates which you can download from there.
You cannot drag & drop anything to an iPod Nano.  You must sync - Syncing Music to iPod

  • My computer no longer recognizes my iPod Touch. And the iPod Touch does not recognize that it is connected to a computer.

My computer no longer recognizes my iPod Touch. And the iPod Touch does not recognize that it is connected to a computer.  It has worked great for many days until today.
I’ve tried two different Apple cables.
I’ve tried different USB ports on the computer.
I have rebooted both the Mac and the iPod.
I’ve wiggled the cables and checked for dust in the connectors.
The iPod charges using this same cable connected to wall wart.  That’s a good sign.
Both the Mac and iPod seem to work fine separate from each other.  They just won’t talk anymore.
    Mac mini
    1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo
    OS 10.4.11
    iTunes 9.2.1
    iPod Touch 32GB, version 3.1.3 (7E18), model PB533LL

I found this possible solution on another support thread, so I tried it.
    turn off iPod
hold Sleep and Home buttons to start it.
When Apple appears, let go of Sleep button, but keep holding Home button.
When screen goes blank, let go of Home button.
Connect cable and check iTunes to see if it has conencted.
This did not work for me.
I then turned off the iPod, restarted the Mac, and restarted the iPod normally.
I connected them with the cable, and it works like normal.  :-)

  • New hard drive and old ipod

I lost my hard drive (and no I hadn't backed up my music files). Is there any way for me to transfer music from my ipod to my PC?

1). Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
3). Once you are connected and your iPod is safely in manual mode there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. iTunes will only let you copy your purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (including purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
A selection of iPod to iTunes utilities:
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
SharePod Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows
iPodRip Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
Music Rescue Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Artwork in iTunes and on iPod

    Can anybody help me?
I am new to iPods but know a reasonable amount about computers. My question is, is there any criteria that artwork must satisfy so it can be used in iTunes and on the iPod?
I have gathered images for all of the CDs I have ripped, but only some of them are displayed in iTunes and on my iPod even though I have attached them to the .mp3 files.
I have tried to attach them again in iTunes, but although they appear when I paste or drag them into position, all traces of them disappear as soon as I move away from the selected file and return to it.
I have looked through previous postings and cannot find an answer to my question. Any help would be much appreciated.

Did this work? I am having the same problem with my Mac and new iPod Video. It's making me crazy...
