A PlayBook app in 24 hours

This morning I got up bright and early, and decided to do a little experiment:
"Can I write a fully functioning PlayBook app, fit for sale, in 24 hours?"
I also decided to give running updates on my progress via Twitter. If you're interested, follow me at @brainsforrent. or check the hashtag #playbook24. It may get a bit techy, but it should be fun.
Files & Folders, the unified file & cloud manager for PlayBook and BB10 with SkyDrive, SugarSync, Box, Dropbox, Google Drive, Google Docs. Free 3-day trial! - Jon Webb - Innovatology - Utrecht, Netherlands

Fantastic.
That was an incredible turnaround. RIM should hire you to make more apps like this!

  • How much data does the apple maps app use per hour ?

    hello,
i would like to know, if somebody could give me a rough number of how much the Apple Maps app uses per hour for navigation ?

Apple's Maps app uses vector graphics, so it doesn't have to download data everytime your view changes, & also has an offline mode...you can download quite a large area over WiFi & then use this cache to navigate.
So, I really wouldn't worry too much about its data usage. Most tests I've read indicate it uses about 80% less data than Google Maps.

Aside from the pseudo-panacea, Resetting the System Management Controller , you are probably going to have to take it to a service place for testing/repair.

  • Purchased Playbook apps not available for reinstall

Three Playbook apps I purchased (Dead Space, Madden and SimCity), are not showing up in the Uninstalled list in App World so I am unable to reinstall them. How can I get them back?

I am having the same problem and came here looking for an answer. I purchased Madden before the OS2 update. Now they are not showing in my uninstalled list so I cannot get them back.

  • Starbucks app and store hours

I know in the grand scheme of things this is a fairly minor issue, but since the upgrade to iOS6, has anyone been able to pull up store hours in the Starbucks app?
I am running the latest and greatest version, I believe 2.5.  I have installed it on an iPhone 4S, an iPhone 5, and a 3rd generation iPad - and all 3 are unable to pull up store hours.  Basically, I get a message that says "Retrieving Hours", and a rotating icon - no matter how long I wait, the hours never appear.  I have tried to retrieve hours for locations across the US.   Both the 4s and iPad had no issues with the Starbucks app prior to upgrade to iOS 6.
I have contacted Starbucks and they seem totally unaware of the issue.  Their suggestion was to uninstall the app, reboot the phone and reinstall the app.  Been there, done that.  I even went one step further, I completely reset my iPhone 4s and set it up again as if it were a new iPhone.  Then the only app I installed was the Starbucks version 2.5.  Same issue.  My thinking is that this has to be either an incompatibility between the basic iOS 6 install and the Starbucks app or the hours simply are not available.
Curious if anyone else has had this issue and if so, were you able to get it to work and how?
    Thanks
    Rotorblades

Update-just received the 2.5.1 update to the app and it now works great!  Hours display immediately!

  • Purchase and download Playbook apps

We don't use a Blackberry phone.  We have a Playbook.  How then do we get access to the apps?
According to this site, the first step is to install the Blackberry App World plugin.  The second step is to connect your Smartphone, and I presume that's a Blackberry phone.  Since we have a Playbook and not a Blackberry phone, we're not allowed to proceed.  But in reading the threads below, it appears a fair number of Playbook users actually buy and download apps for their Playbooks.  How do they do it?

Here's a fairly detailed description of what happens when I get an app; I hope it gives you an idea where the problem is in your process.
When I turn my PB on, the first screen I see (after the balloons, etc.) has five icons at the top right; the middle icon is a quarter circle with some green arcs indicating that wifi is on and connected (if it's not, I touch the gear wheel which is the rightmost icon, select Wi-Fi from the list on the left, make a connection, then go back to the first screen). On the next line either All or Favorites is highlighted, and the App World icon is in the third line. I touch that, and the App World display opens up. I use the search window at top right to find Tetris, and touch to open the description window. I touch download, and the screen shifts to the downloaded apps window, where there is a progress bar showing that Tetris is downloading. When it's finished, I close the Apps World window, which brings me back to the first page, which has icons for all my installed apps. I make sure All is highlighted on the second line, and swipe to the bottom of the page, to find Tetris.
If the app is not free, the Download button on the description screen is replaced by a Purchase button, and touching it opens a login window asking you for your BlacklBerry ID and password. The next window gives you the detailds of the purchase, and a chance to set up / change your payment method.  When that is complete, touching the Buy Now button at the bottom of the window takes you to the downloaded apps window, described above.
Now I have to go and learn how to play Tetris.  Once again, good luck!

  • Downloaded playbook apps not showing up on playbook?

    Hi,
I'm posting this on behalf of my dad, who like me has a playbook, but i live miles away so i've not been able to set it up for him, so this is a slightly garbeled message from him:
When he got the playbook he did all the inital signing up (he doesnt have a blackberry phone, just the playbook) and as far as he is aware he signed up for a blackberry account. He is able to go onto the app world and download apps, which go into the 'My World' section and have a delete opeion etc. So to me it sounds like he is logged in and can download.
However, they arent showing up on the playbook? With mine I download them and then they appear with all the icons on the bottom screen, but his are nowhere to be found?
Has anyone come across this or got any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    OOPS,
I feel real intelligent right about now!
The icons were there all along on the first page of the Home Screen where all the App Icons are kept.
All I had to do (on that first page) was to scroll down to the bottom of the Page to see the newly installed Apps.
This solved my problem, which turned out to be a Layer 8 issue as suspected.
    Cheers

  • Playbook app icon

I packaged an app using flash professional and the blackberry SDK and included the following app icons in the publish command line icon36.png icon48.png icon 72.png but when the app appears on the simulator there is no icon, its just a question mark. What have I done wrong?

PlayBook has 86x86 pixel icons. Include them in your bar-descriptor.xml (blackberry-tablet.xml) like this:
       <icon>
          <image>icon86x86.png</image>
       </icon>

  • Playbook App World Error

I called Tech Support last night but they were useless.
After updating to 2.0 my App World has stopped working. It says that I am not connected to the network but everything else works. My browser and everything.
I ahve swiped twice. Any ideas?

No, wiping and reloading the PlayBook operating system is not called "swipe" on the PlayBook, hence my confusion of what you've actually done.
Here, in RIM documentation, are mentions of "swipe" referring to using your finger to swipe up or down from the bezel to close or open options and screens.
Article ID: KB26514 Using a wireless keyboard and mouse with the BlackBerry® PlayBook™
Article ID: KB26130 How to customize the appearance of the BlackBerry PlayBook
Here mentions of "wipe" in RIM documentation, referencing to remove all data, etc.:
Article ID: KB27188 How to perform a security wipe on a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet
Article ID: KB26937 How deleting all data from a BlackBerry smartphone affects the connected BlackBerry PlayBook work data
So, I am not sure what you've done. Perhaps it was a 'wipe', but you are free to call it what you want, just helps in here so we know what you're speaking of. I had no idea what your "swipe" will do to your Playbook.
Regardless, do this, go find some free, no-password, WiFi hotspot, like a McDonalds or library, coffee shop, and see if you can see any OPEN WiFi spots, and ultimately connect.
    Thanks.

  • Help with a BB Playbook App- strings and variables

hello, i hope ive come to the right place for help.
let me give u some background:
im developing an app for the blackberry playbook, which in fact just came out today! yay. so anyway, im making an app that will decode fringe glyphs, from the show "fringe." unless u watch it, u prob wouldnt get it, but everyso often they show a symbol in the show, and by the end of the show, they have shown about 5-6 of them. there is a code to them, and each distinc symbol represents a letter. so when u have recognized all 5 symbols, u are able to spell a word, that typically correlates to that epidsode of the show. So, for my app, i have a wall of tiles, with groups of the symbols. underneath this group of tiles, i have 5 blank spaces.
So, i want a user to be able to watch the show, and as he/she sees a symbol, finds it on the tablet app, taps it, and the corresponding letter will appear in the 1st blank space, and so on, until it spells out an entire word.
I am relatively new to the programming, so i was hoping that someone could possibly provide me with a list of major steps on how to provide this app. basically, what methods do u use to make each of these things happen. and what is the practical/efficient way of course. So, of course my main question is how i can link each image to a letter with then displays along the bottom, but i have no idea what i would need or how i would do this. Reminder: i am using actionscritpt, if that makes any difference.
Thank you, and please ask any questions necessary for u to help me.
    PS.
along with selecting images for the letters, i would also like it to be almost like a toggle button. if that makes any sense, but for now, id like to figure out wat i have stated above.

heres a screenshot of what i have so far. nothing really except kind of the layout and pics. what i need now is user interaction... lol

  • I am trying to download an app for an hour now and it still says waiting what do I do?

I am trying to download an app and it says waiting now for an hour what do I do

Check iTunes and see if you have a pending or stalled download in there. If you do, finish that download or delete it if you can. If you can't finish or delete the download on the iPad, do it in iTunes on your computer and then sync the iPad. Then go back to the apps and see if they will download.
If that doesn't work or if that was not the problem, go to Settings>Store >Apple ID, tap your ID and sign out. Then reboot the iPad, Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Then go back to Settings>Store>Sign in and sign in again and see if the apps will update.
