A possible dumb question - capture HDV

should i be able to hear the audio on the computer while doing capture from an HDV camcorder?
Message was edited by: Forrest Jerome1

Hi,
no the audio won't play during capture from your computer.
However you can hear it from the camcorder if there is the control to do so, but not from the computer.

  • Newish to iWeb so excuse the possibly dumb questions!

I am not a web designer also, so technically my skills in web stuff on a mac are basic ( i used to do some basic HTML stuff on a PC). I have my .mac account that I use for my family site, which is fine. But now I have a registered domain for my photography business, so I went ahead and created another web site for that, separate from my family site. I got it all done then went to save it to a folder and it is saying, "the document iweb could not be saved." I have tried a few times but nothing. IT won't even let me publish it to my .mac site. I NEED to get this done and am at my wits end. I am wondering if it would be easier to use the Adobe Creative Suite to design the webpage!
Also, is it easier to FTP the site to the domain server, or to have it at my .mac site, redirected from the new domain?
Last question. Can iWeb do a photo gallery that is more sophisticated than the slideshow option? As a photographer I would like something a little more snazzy that can also be divided by genre (babies, kids, family etc).
    Thanks for any help!

You could publish your photos to a +.Mac Web Gallery+ and make a simple hyperlink to it from your web site. Here's info about +.Mac Web Gallery:+
If you upgrade to iWeb 2 in iLife '08 you can pseudo embed a +.Mac Web Gallery+ into your site: Here's a video tutorial briefly showing that about half-way through:
To really embed your +.Mac Web Gallery+ into a web page, use HTML's IFRAME. Unlike frames created using FRAMESET and FRAME, IFRAME creates a frame that sits in the middle of a regular non-framed web page. IFRAME works like IMG, only instead of putting a picture on the page, it puts another web page.
iWeb 2 in iLife '08 uses IFRAMES to easily embed widgets into web pages via iWeb's +HTML Snippet+ window. Here are instructions to embed a +.Mac Web Gallery+ into an iWeb site via iWeb 2's +HTML Snippet+ window:

  • Installing iTunes (possible dumb question?)

Now I am no computer expert so for the savvy out there I trust you not to laugh at this question!
When you download a file such as iTunes and save it prior to install I understand it is visible as e.g. iTunes.exe. Opening the .exe file will cause a programme to be installed. Understand that.
Now, are you safe to delete the original .exe file you downloaded? This won't mess up your newly installed programme? Presume what goes for iTunes.exe in this regard goes for any .exe file? I would simply like to be in a position to delete any unnecessary files from my PC.
    Comments anyone?

I always keep the last version of iTunesSetup.exe that I like. So I can go back to it, if there is a crummy update, which some of them have been....
    hi y'all!
i've been religiously keeping a copy of every installer file i've ever downloaded from itunes (and ipod software upaters too) since my 5.0.1.4 install.
the most recent version of it lives on my desktop (for reference purposes, if i can ever find it in that cyberpigsty). when a new itunes version comes out, i go through my ritual of creating a folder for my previous version of iTunesSetup.exe, and tucking it into bed to leave room for the brand spanking new iTunesSetup.exe on my desktop.
(i'm inclined to believe my behavior is a bit perverse in this regard, though.)

  • A possibly dumb question re exporting clip for web use

    Hi,
I've been experimenting with diff resolutions etc for exporting a clip intended to be added to a web page. Diff levels of mpeg compression, etc.
I'm most impressed with the quality of H264, the video codec for the video ipod. I play it in a quicktime player just fine & it looks great. Its a choice in FCP HD 4.5
The question is, can I make a little clip in H264 & put it on the web? Will web browsers with plug-ins set up to play quicktime files be able to play it? are there any compatibility issues? Windows browsers? etc?
    Thanks
    Duane

Yes, they are playable on the web. They were able to do that before the video iPod came along, so that was their original intent.
For others to see it they need to have QT7, and unfortunately many PCs cannot see videos in this format.

  • Question About HDV Capture / Timeline

    Hello,
I am capturing HDV from a HV40. Whenever I bring a clip into the timeline, the audio is not a stereo-linked pair, it is instead two individual mono tracks. When I make it stereo linked, I then have to set the pan back to zero. These are a lot of extra steps to control audio volume. How do I make it so that it's stereo linked when I capture so I don't have to do all of this afterwards?
    My capture settings are:
    Sequence Preset: HDV1080i60
    Capture Preset: HDV
Device Control Preset: HDV FireWire Basic
    Thank you for your help.

Stereo linking is selected in the clip settings in the capture window.
You do not have to reset to the pan to zero. -1 is correct for a stereo pair; 0 is not.

  • "no data from device" when trying to capture HDV

I need to capture additional footage for an HDV project I am already editing. Capturing the initial footage (about a month ago) went smoothly. Now however, when trying to capture footage from a new tape shot just last week, I simply cannot. If I try to Capture Now, I get a "No Data from Device" message and the capture attempt aborts. If I log some clips and Batch Capture, the material cues and begins to play but the capture window just continues to say CUEING SOURCE MATERIAL and captures nothing. I am using the Sony HVR-M10U deck as a capture device.
The only thing that has changed between the original capture and this latest attempt is that I have also been working on a DV project at the same time, and I used the M10U to capture some DV footage for that project. In order to succesfully capture DV footage I had to force the deck to play only DV (by changing the VCR settings in the menu).
To try and capture this latest HDV footage, I went back into the menu and forced the deck to play HDV only. In searching for answers I came across this Apple article (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302407) and followed those exact steps.
However, nothing seems to work. I do have device control and the timecode is being read off the deck in Log & Capture (so the firewire connection is fine), but there's no video in the preview window and no capturing is possible. I am able to open my DV project, reset the menu on the deck, and capture DV footage - but I can't for the life of me switch to capturing HDV footage.
Any bright ideas would be much appreciated - I'm really at wits end.
    thanks,
    Tom

I am having a similar problem with my sony HVRZ1U, I can capture dv through firewire no problem but when I choose easy setup for HDV it does not recognize the device.
Funny thing is I tried to download clips on a pc in Premiere with all the similar settings on my camera and it works fine, I have deck control and can capture HDV footage, so that rules out a problem with the camera. Back to FCP5 with the same settings and nothing.
Went through uninstalling quicktime 7.03 back to 7.01 - nothing
Deleted the preferences in FCP5 - nothing
Checked the firewire connections and cables - they work fine
Using all the right settings on the camera and in FCP5
The tape format was shot correctly
Any light on what could be going wrong would be very very much appreciated

If both computers were configured identically, then they would both lose the same amount of battery life with respect to the same starting configuration - comparing apple to apples. I don't know how much the added RAM, etc. would reduce battery life, but it would be less for both models.
Battery life is a tricky subject because most mfgr.s like to suggest as long a life as possible, but often do so under a set of conditions that are not common to most users. Apple is no different. Their computers do have good battery life, however. But not likely as long as what is in the ads for the typical user.

  • Capturing HDV from Canon XH-A1

Hi, I'm new to the Canon XH-A1 and it seems there are a lot of questions out there about capturing HDV footage to FCE... So I'm going to add one more and see if anyone can help me out!
    I keep getting this message:
"Capture Presets must have a video or and audio digitizer set to capture. Please change to the desired preset in the Audio/Video Settings."
I can't seem to find out how to do this on my own, and I feel like I am missing an elusive, yet simple, step in the process.
    Using MacBook Pro 15" 2.4GHz
    Final Cut Express 4
4 pin to 9 pin Firewire
    Canon XH-A1
Any thoughts or help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Jesse

    Easy Set-Up is set to:
    AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1440x1080i60
Canon XH-A1 is set to HDV 60i
I tried setting it to HDV-AIC 1080i60 but then the message is that the hdv deck isn't connected at all. So I tried the AVCHD setting and that led to the other message about A/V settings.

  • Using the USB port for an external HD dumb question

OK. Forgive a possibly really dumb question here...
My external HD has a USB 2.0 interface and I hooked it up to the USB port using a cable that came with an old USB 1 hub I'm not using right now.
My dumb question is this: is there such a thing as a USB 2.0 cable? Or are the USB cables all the same?
Also, how long should it be taking to transfer 12.1 GB of data (about 9,000 photos) from my external HD mounted on the AirMac base station to my MBP? There are still 48 minutes left and it seems an awfully long time for 12.1 GB of data. That's why I was wondering if the cable could be an issue...
    Thanks,
    doug

I am suspecting now that my HD might really have been a USB 1.0 drive...

  • Dumb Question??

I hope the philosophy here is that there is no such thing as a dumb question.
    Here goes.
Adobe Classroom in a Book for Premier Pro states that when opening a New Project under the Project tab you have two choices DV or HDV when in actuality the choices in my version of CS4 are HDV and QuickTime.  I have been under the impression that QuickTime can be either DV or HDV and with that premise I do not understand what my choices are.
    Thanks

  • ? concerns capturing HDV

I am logging and capturing HDV footage was shot in 1080i 60. I went to audio/video settings and selected HDV. The capturing process works fine however when I look at the frame size in the browser it reads 720x420. Shouldn't it read 1080 x ?. Capturing off of a Sony HDV deck.

IT MORE THAN POSSIBLE that you recorded the material in SD as opposed to HDV check your settings on the camera itself. If that's not the case then my suggestion would be to make sure the record inhibit is pushed on your tape this way you can't lose your original material, then go horse play around with the settings on FCP get familiar with them just do it on a new project that you don't mind trashing, also once you start to learn via trail and error you may find it more useful to look in the FCP Help menu it's very useful and alot quicker than Trail and error.
Nothing wrong with experiment as long as your not doing it on the clients time or screwing up your work.

  • Dumb question about browser dectection

I have a web application that looks awesome in IE but in Firefox it looks clunky and blocky. What I need to perform is a validation to see what browser the client is using. I have done this before on simple html pages javascript browser sniffing. Well it seems that I can't for the life of me to be able to get this working in Creator.
My web project is a Sun Creator Web application. My OS is Windows
Does anyone have any idea or references that you could supply to me?
The following code works in an html environment but in a jsp I cant get the different style sheets to work.
    document.write("<link id="link1" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="/WebDemoExtractor/resources/introductionFireFox.css" /> ");
U jave tried many variations of the following
    document.write("<ui:link binding='#{introduction.link2}' id='link2' url='/resources/introductionFireFox.css'/>")
I have tried performing many variations with the the above and I have had no success.
Is it even possible to perform this function??
    Thank you

Not a dumb question at all.
I think you mean how is it possible to view YouTube videos in Safari on iPad, right?
Basically, YouTube senses the browser you're using. Because Safari on iPad doesn't support Flash, YouTube delivers the movie in a format the iPad can play (like H.264, as a previous post mentioned). This happens with YouTube videos embedded on other web sites, too.
    I hope this helps.
I was in an Apple Store a few days ago, and a teenage kid really wanted an iPad. His dad said, "but it doesn't play flash, so you won't get to see YouTube videos that you love." Kid said, something expletive deleted.
The son then picked up the iPad, and he clicked on the YouTube icon. Walked out of the store with it. Sales guy and I laughed. Made my day.

  • Capturing HDV worse in FCE than iMovie 08 - why?

I'm just curious why the capturing process of HDV material is worse in Final Cut Express 4.0 than it is in iMovie 08?
The latter has a proper capture window where it's possible to control the camera (forward, rewind etc.), while the former only has a simple "capturing window" that captures whatever is playing from the camera (a Canon HV20 in my case). No controls of rewind etc.?
So - why? Isn't FCE supposed to be a superior product to iMovie 08?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
That's the way FCE HD capture HDV because there is a conversion to Apple Intermediate Codec upon capturing and because FCE HD is a stripped down version of Final Cut Pro that allows cam control on capture.
But this behavior is okay as you can position your tape with your camcorder remote and start the capturing process. You'll get a bunch of movie clips, like iMovie.

  • Capturing HDV as SD

Hi- I have a bunch of HDV footage that I'd like to capture into FCP as SD.
    1) Is this possible or if capturing via firewire does it have to be captured as HDV? There's a HDV capture preset and an HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec. My camera is a Sony HVR-V1U, which should I be using?
    2) I'm working in a project that's partly SD and partly HDV, what would be the best sequence setting for me to use?
    Thanks for the help.
    Robert

There are two downconversion choices in the V1U to preserve the aspect ratio: letterbox (reduces vertical resolution some of which is used for the black bars at top and bottom), and "Squeeze" which gives you SD resolution which is then stretched on an appropriate wide screen TV. For 4:3 TVs without anamorphic capability, all DVD players about which I know have a "letterbox" output.
DVDs can be written in either format; I suggest "squeeze" since you get more resolution through out the process, including output to regular 4:3 TVs.
A side note here: since many of us are going to SD outputs for DVD, I still suggest injesting HDV (or other HD formats) in HD for editing in Final Cut Pro. I have no trouble editing HDV (G5 Quad, 4GB memory); others suggest other formats including DVCPro HD, AIC, and ProRes 422SD.
The point is to AVOID going to a DV format. The color space is more limited (4:1:1 on DV; 4:2:0 for HDV) which results in more vertical color banding on high contrast edges especially where reds are concerned. Then when you are ready to compress to MPEG-2 for DVD, compressor will do the down-rezing, without going through SD. I find that Compressor 3 solved some earlier problems with edge artifacts. But to see a work around if you experience excessive "stair stepping" on diagonal edges, search for "Bonzai".

  • Captured HDV suddenly indication TC breaks

    Hello,
This question may pertain to my camera as much as to FC but thought I'd give it a try anyway.
I've been capturing HDV from a Canon XHA1 camera for some time with no trouble. Today a tape captured as 35 separate clips, each clip marking a point where the camera was turned off and on. When I look at these clips there is always one frame difference between the end of one clip and the start of the next. Yet the time codes of the 35 clips are continuous. I tried capturing this same footage on another computer with the same results. Then, to experiment, I shot some footage in SD with lots of stops and starts in filming, and no problems capturing. I then shot some HDV with lots of individual shots, but back to the problem of the creation of multiple clips - each starting when the camera was restarted.
I'm confused. From my experimenting it seems most likely that the problem is in the camera's HDV computer component, but that's a guess.
Is there any way this is a glitch that FC can deal with? Can one instruct it to ignore what it takes as "timecode breaks" and let it capture the whole tape? Seems to me older versions of FC could do that. I'd just like to capture the whole tape to see if those individual frames register as missing there as well.
    Thanks
    John

    I'm becoming even more confused.
As an experiment I wanted to capture a section of the tape that seems to be showing a time code break so that I could examine it's time code more carefully. The plan was to go to User Preferences and uncheck the box that says "Abort capture on dropped frames". This way I should be able to go back and capture a section of tape right through what seems to be a time code break. I did that. I unchecked the box (and eventually the one above it that says "Abort ETT/PTV on dropped frames" though I've never been able to figure out what that means.). When I captured I still got a new clip at precidely the same point.
So, in summary, with or without "Abort capture" checked, in HDV mode (but not SD) I'm getting a new clip at each point where the camera stops then starts.
    John
p.s. I was checking the camera's manual last night in hopes that somewhere in it there were instructions on how one could "reset it computer", trash preferences and all that - as that simple procedure so often seems to solve everything - but no luck.)
