A Possible Solution if your DVD/CD burner disappears from VISTA

I finally have a fix after 9 months of not being able to use my laptop with ITunes/IPod due to the program disabling the DVD/CD drives on my Vista laptop. You can try this ... if it does not work for you, you can simply restore the file.
Search for the following file:
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\AFS.SYS
The fix I found recommended renaming the file as a TXT file extension, but I could not get that to work, so I just deleted it, figuring that if it did anything else detrimental to my operating system after a reboot, I could just restore it out of the recycle bin. Sure enough, getting rid of AFS.SYS restored the DVD/CD drive to MY COMPUTER right away!
The file supposedly allows CD recording functionality with the following programs:
 HP Memories Disc Creator
 Liquid Audio
 Portal Player
 Oak Technology SimpliCD
 Broderbund's Print Shop version 20
so if you try to use any of those on a VISTA Windows system, you might run into a problem with CD burning because VISTA is not compatible.
Hope this helps some of you out there, I know I searched message boards for months, tried many things and nothing worked. I can't remember where I found this (Maybe on a GEAR website?) so again, maybe this will save some others some grief!
I have not yet updated to the new 8.1 ITunes ... I am still on 8.0 so hopefully that will not cause any issues!

Hey McTav - I do not know why your computer does not have the same file on it - unless it is not built quite the same way since it is not a Dell. Maybe you could contact Gear to see if removing that file will do the same for you. I know in my case I could not get support from Dell, Apple, or Microsoft...
Good Luck!

  • HP Solution Center doesn't work after upgrade from Vista to Win7 64b

Two problems. 1) Upgraded Dell 1737 Notebook from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 64b. HP Solution Center no longer works. Have HP Officejet Pro 8500 A909a printer hardwired into router. Downloaded new printer drivers, still cannot print. 2) Cannot get Solution Center to execute. Message says can't find "SolutionCenter.msi". No Win7 upgrade for Solution Center on HP site.

    Hello ReallyFreeBob,
Lets first try Uninstalling the existing printer software using the listed steps..
Press the keys Win + R, a RUN box would open. Type in the command %TEMP% in the box and hit OK button.
A temp folder would open, locate for the folder name begning with 7z..... , open it , then do the following ..
Locate for folder "UTILS" and double click to open it. Locate for folder "CCC" and double click to open it. Locate for file Uninstall_L3.bat and double click to Run it. Follow the onscreen instructions
After the uninstallation is done you may have to restart the PC.
Then download and run the HP Printer Install Wizard from www.hp.com/go/tools

  • Possible solution to your Optical Drive failure

Hey everyone. So I've been having the same issue that it seems like everyone else has been having with their optical drive spitting out DVDs and CDs.
Well first off here are the specs of my drive:
    HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N:
    Model: HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N
    Revision: AP09
    Serial Number: K0078710705
    Detachable Drive: No
    Protocol: ATAPI
    Unit Number: 0
    Socket Type: Internal
    Low Power Polling: Yes
    Power Off: Yes
So it's the same as drive thats been causing lots of problems. My issues started about 5 months ago. One day my drive was able to read/write DVDs just fine but then out of the blue it stopped writing DVDs. I was a little upset but whatever right? I didn't REALLY need to write DVDs. Then it all together stopped reading DVDs that's when I got a little ticked. So then I searched the web for an answer but came up the conclusion that I needed a new drive but the problem is my warranty is over. So then I pretty much gave up. Not really wanting to pay $150 for a new drive I tried to forget that my $2000 macbook pro was crippled. Tonight though I thought about it again. I thought of how disc drives work. Inside there is a laser that reads the disc. Remember your walkman? Before the age of the ipod. It always had a tag right by the laser that said "Don't Touch." So then I thought, "maybe the laser in my disc drive is dirty." So I grabbed my can of compressed air and stuck the straw attachment into the slot. After spraying for few seconds I loaded a normal dvd in and PRESTO IT WORKS! I couldn't believe it. IT WAS DIRTY!
This might not work for you maybe there is some thing seriously wrong with the hardware or the software. But right now what do you have to lose right? Before you run off and buy a new drive try cleaning the lens with some compressed air.
BOTTOM LINE: TRY COMPRESSED AIR. It worked for me =D

my macbook pro is just over one year old, and my inernal dvdrw also stopped working with dvd disks (it still worked with cd disks).
i stuck the nozzle of my spray air into the drive slot, sprayed three times and VOILA, my drive reads and writes dvds again!
    amazing and easy fix!!

  • Possible solution if your iPod isn't synchronizing!!!

A lot of problems mentioned here are iPods which are not properly synchronizing with iTunes.
My specific problem was that certain files couldn't be copied to my iPod Classic and that would messup my iPod.
The problem is corrupted music files. Check this by trying to copy a file from your hard drive to an external hard drive. If you get an error message than your file is corrupted and needs to be replaced by a backup or by a new download.
    Hope this helps.
    Regards,
    DJ Sirko

You can just change the drive letter of the ipod to something not ever in use like "Z". This will do the same thing without worrying about the second computer conflicting.
There is a knowledge base article on how to change the drive letter of the ipod if you don't know how.

  • Possible solution for "iPhone not recognized by iTunes" issue (Vista/7)

This solution is intended for those Vista/Windows 7 users:
    - whose iPhone will not show up as a device in iTunes (usually after upgrading to iTunes 10);
    - whose iPhone is successfully connected to the PC (appears as a device in Windows Explorer);
    - particularly those experiencing the issue where fully uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes will allow it to recognize the iPhone once -- and once only -- but disconnecting the iPhone will cause iTunes to ignore it again (until the next full uninstall/reinstall).
I know there are plenty of people who fit those criteria, as I've been monitoring the forums for a fix for this for weeks.
    The solution's pretty straight forward:
    1. Disconnect all iPhone/iPod devices and close iTunes
    2. Open Windows Explorer
    3. Navigate to the folder: *C:\ProgramData\Apple Computer\iTunes*
    4. Delete the file: iPodDevices.xml +(I recommend you copy it to the Desktop first, for peace of mind)+
    5. Reconnect your iPhone to the PC and fire up iTunes
Fingers crossed, your iPhone should now show up as a device in iTunes after a short pause.
The XML file is recreated each time the iPhone is connected to the PC, so you will need to repeat the file deletion each time you want to sync your phone. So this isn't a permanent fix -- that's up to Apple to fix their buggy application -- only a workaround, but it's a **** sight faster than uninstalling every piece of iTunes-related software each time. (You could even set up a batch file to delete iPodDevices.xml automatically and save the folder navigation.)
Windows XP users: unfortunately, the ProgramData folder only exists in Windows Vista/7. I don't have a copy of XP to hand to locate it myself, but it's a good bet that the same iPodDevices.xml file exists somewhere on your PC (most likely somewhere under Program Files or Local Settings) and is the culprit if you're experiencing the same problems under XP.
So far, deleting that file before connecting my phone hasn't failed to work for me (iPhone 3GS, iOS4.1, iTunes 10.0.1.22). YMMV, but go ahead and reply if it works for you too -- it'll help me get a more detailed and coherent bug report to Apple.

I should also mention: this solution should not be a first step in troubleshooting.
If you haven't already, try the following steps first -- they're more basic and/or more likely to provide a permanent fix for you:
    1) Try a different USB port. (One on the PC itself; not on a USB hub.)
    2) Try a different USB cable.
    3) Reboot the PC. (Sure you've already tried this, but still...)
    4) Fully uninstall & reinstall iTunes and related software: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
    5) Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1567
    6) Reinstall/update the Apple Mobile Device Driver: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1538
Reinstalling iTunes fully (4) works for many people so be sure to try that, following the sequence on the instruction page. If you're seeing the issue where reinstallation will allow you a one-time sync before iTunes screws up again, I'm pretty confident that following the solution in the first post will work for you.
PS: Mac users... sorry, I know some of you are seeing the same issue but I don't have the first clue about how iTunes is structured on a Mac. Best case, iPodDevices.xml exists somewhere on your Mac and you can try the same fix... good luck!

  • Is it possible to restore your itunes on a computer from iCloud?

My external harddrive crashed recently, and all of my music went with it. I have everything on my iCloud account, and can get to it all on my phone and ipad, but is it possible to get it from iCloud to my laptop?
    Thanks in advance,
    Katie

You don't have to use iCloud
In iTunes on your computer, sign in to the store. Click on "purchased" under quick links on the right side.
This is a record of everything you've purchased from iTunes under your user name. Cluck on music. Click on the tab "not on this computer" and then click on "all" from the list on the left. Then click "download all" and enjoy your music! This also works for apps and movies.

  • How do I finalize a DVD after burning photos from Aperture??

I have made a slideshow on Aperture and exported it to my desktop. I have burned a DVD-R but there is one problem...I need to finalize it. How do I do this to be able to play on my DVD player?

Well the .mov file was on the desktop, and I went to finder/new finder window/ and made a new folder. Put the DVD-R in the recorder and clicked "burn". The .mov file burned successfully to the disc but cannot be played back on an external device.
What is the external device you are trying to play the DVD in? Just burning a .mov file to a DVD doesn't create DVD that is playable in most DVD players.
If you are trying to create a DVD that can play in a DVD player take a look at iDVD.

  • Is it possible to use your iPod Touch 4th Gen from your computer?

I have an iPod Touch 4th Gen. And I broke the screen, the sent it in to get fixed... the people put the screen on wrong. It worked for a while, then it stopped working. I was trying to use it one day, and I accedentaly put on the curtain mode. So now, I have an iPod Touch with the I can't use. I haven't sent it in yet though. So in the mean time I've been trying to find a way to use my iPod without actually using my iPod. If you get what I'm saying.
Does anyone know how I can use my iPod without actually "using it"?
    Please you'd save my life!

With the exception of using a docking station to play music, there is no way to "use" your iPod through your computer.
And what the heck is "curtain mode"?

When did you first notice this?
Was there anything else extra ordinary that happened before this?
Have you been able to use Toast Basic with the current setup previously.
Is your DVD/CD burner new or have you had it for a while?
What steps have you taken to correct the issue?

  • DVD MENU, burn using TOAST

Has anyone tried this, building a menu using DVDSP, after you build your menu -- you have 2 folders, Video TS, Audio TS. Do you have to burn your DVD using burner inside DVDSP? Or can I drag those TS folders into TOAST and burn it there. If so, where do I drag these files? Data? or Video?
    Appreciate your time and suggestions...
    KChen

    KChen:
I'm a little confused about what you mean with "DVD
MENU" . . . but the answer is yes, you can use Toast
    to burn your <b<disc</b>.
In Toast 7 go to Data and choose format DVD-ROM
UDF. NAme your disc and drag both VIDEO_TS and
    AUDIO_TS folder inside. Burn.
Another approach is creating a disc image of
your build in DVDSP and use that img file in Toast or
OSX Disk Utility. You can find here a complete
tutorial about Creating Disc Image in DVDSP (from
    www.kenstone.net site).
    Hope it helps !
    Alberto
    Dear Silal:
You know how DVDSP allows you to build your menu with a nice template and navigation buttons. When you burn DVD using Toast, it only gives you one button.
So my question is, how do you use that nice menu layout that DVDSP offers, and then using Toast to burn your disc. Do you always have to open DVDSP to burn your disc? Or can you use Toast to burn your disc and keeping it stored away so everytime you want to make a copy, all you have to do is use Toast.
The second part of my question, if I want to burn my disc using toast with the template built from DVDSP, do I burn it by dragging in the TS folders into DATA or VIDEO in Toast.
I hope this is clearer, and I appreciate any suggestions, I'm very new at doing this.
    Many thanks!!!
    KChen

  • Is it possible to obtain a DVD or memory stick to download an upgrade of Photoshop?

I live in the country of Panama and have a very slow and unreliable internet conection. I would like to upgrade to Photoshop CS6 but that would be very difficult, if not impossible, to do so at present. Is it somehow possible to purchase a DVD or memory stick from Adobe that would solve my problem?

Nope, downloads only. You will have to find some alternate location where you can download it yourself for offline install.

When you open windows explorer check option Views and set it to Details so you should be able to see file name, size, type, artist, Album title, year, track number and duration.
You can open windows media player, go to library and check if you can edit each file listed there.

I really appreciate the fast sent solution about my failure to burn DVDs with Lion, but I am 89 years old and think I know something about computers, but don't have a clue about ZAPPing PRAM nor RESET SMC.  I also can't find any evidence of a preserved earlier OS (Snow Leopard).  I also don't know how to partition further my drive after all this time…(I used to have Parallels partitioned) but as I said I cannot find any where on the HD SN.  Is it possible that it doesn't exist anymore?  Not too technical, please, unless that is the only possible answer to this whole delemna..

Blue colored text in these forums usually indicates a clickable link. The two I posted in https://discussions.apple.com/message/18789716#18789716 bring up Apple's articles on those subjects. For partitioning information, peruse Disk Utilities help files, especially

  • Possible to install HD-DVD Burner in iMac G4?

Hi, I was wondering if it is at all possible to install HD-DVD burner in a iMac G4? Anyone tried this?

I know that Toast Titanium 8 for Mac supports Blu-Ray burning (Apple's loyalties are in the Blu-Ray not the HD DVD camp) but the G4 is not a processor I'd ever want to be encoding HD in. The G4 wouldn't even be up to playing discs. So I think you could do it with a Blu-Ray drive but you shouldn't do it. I hate having to wait whilst an SD DVD encodes HD is at least four times longer. Remember Apple hasn't put a HD spec burner in even it's 8-core Mac Pro yet!
