A problem with BIS

Hey,
I've recently started using social apps a lot(things like Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr) but I've been having an annoying problem, whenever I disable wi-fi and use 3G, the apps don't work and I get an error that says
"You are currently on a data plan that does not support this application. If you want to use this application, please connect to a Wi-Fi network or contact your service provider to upgrade your data plan" Blackberry Messenger and the web browser works except the social apps.
I live in Saudi Arabia, my carrier is STC and I have the BIS plan it offers(there is only one) Many people have said that by calling their carrier, they usually fix the problem and it starts working but when two of my friends tried to, it didn't work so I didn't bother wasting my time.I've also heard its because that all network traffic in the country is monitored, and thus browsing has to pass by the local proxy, which is a function that doesn't exist with BIS servers.

You need to make sure you PIN of the BB is registered with the new account, and your emails are setup there.

But also, make sure Orange provisioned the BlackBerry Data Plan to the account, sometimes people make mistakes and it might not have been activiated.
On your handset, go to Options > Advanced > Host Routing Table. Press Menu > Register. If you are set up correctly for a BlackBerry Data Plan, you should get a registration message in your Message folder within 15-20 minutes if not sooner.

  • Problem with BIS & OWA

    Hi, I have a problem with the setting up of an OWA account on BIS website.  I think my only fix may be to change my email address formatting but I do not want to nor should I have to as this has been our email setup for years.  It would be appreciated if someone has another method or someway of telling Blackberry to fix the website.
    The problem is that my user's email format is [email protected]  When I enter this in the OWA account setup page it attempts to authenticate the login using the http://mail.somesite.com/exchange/joe.blog url which is OK but it uses the joe.blog as the user's domain login which it is not correct.  The login name is Joe Blog.
    I can see in my event viewer where BIS has attempted to log in with joe.blog and of course is being denied access.
    I would appreciate any feedback. TA

    I don't know if BIS supports this ... If you can get it to connect I think you can get it to work ... you should be able to enter a different username from email name.
    If you've found a solution through a post; please mark it as a solution.

  • Change of mobile provider has caused a problem with BIS on my bb pearl

    Hi, hope someone can help.
    I have just changed mobile provider from O2 to Orange via sim only contract.  I had BIS set up when I was with O2 although it took approximately 2 weeks before my e-mails could be pushed to my handset.  Now I am with Orange, I have asked them to set me up with BIS, but, to date, I have been unable to receive any e-mails.
    Do I need to do something on my handset?
    Pretty desperate for a solution as I am having to pay for BIS with Orange and am paying for something I am not able to use at the moment.

    Perhaps, you intend to say "stopped" working?
    If you have a BlackBerry Data Plan on your service provider account, on your BlackBerry device, go to:
    1. Options > Advanced > Host Routing Table > Menu > Register.
    2. Resend your service books from your carrier BIS site:
    From your handheld device:   http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB15402
    Go to the Personal Email Set Up icon and log in. Then under Help!, select Service Books, then select Send service Books.
    From your desktop PC:  http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB02830
    North American Carriers - scroll down to select your carrier
    WorldWide Carriers - Find your carrier on the list
    3. With the BlackBerry device powered ON, remove the battery a few seconds and then reinsert the battery to reboot. This reboot, even if you have already done this, is often needed to install the service books.

  • Problem with BIS registration at mobile provider

    Hello, I just bought an unlocked BB 9720, as a provider I choosed Vodafone (I live in Spain). Can I register for BIS online? I contacted vodafone, but they dont even know what it is.

    Hi and Welcome to the Community!
    You need to ring them back up...they certainly do know what BIS is, or at least what the specific plan they sell is required for BB devices. The person you spoke to might not be properly trained...so try someone else.
    Good luck!

  • Massive problems with BlackBerry ID/BIS/App World after provider switch

    Hi,
    I recently switched providers and got a bunch of different problems since then. The old provider deleted my BIS account, which of course also disabled the push mail functionality on my BlackBerry. I tried to register a new account with my new provider, which didn't work for unknown reasons. After several calls to my new providers hotline they finally suggested to reset my BB to factory default and try registering again. After the reset, pretty much the very first thing I was prompted with was the BlackBerry ID login. I used my old login and right after that, in the mail setup dialog, got the error again that there's a problem with the applications server and I can't create or login with a BIS account. I wondered how it could know my BIS account, so I did another factory reset and this time created a new BlackBerry ID. This time everything went fine, the new BIS account was created within seconds and a test mail was delivery to my device immediately. I was pretty happy, until I noticed that I couldn't restore all my data from BlackBerry Protect because of the new BlackBerry ID. Also all my apps were gone from App World, which is linked to the BlackBerry ID as well. So what I'm wondering now is
    1) why is my BIS account linked to my BlackBerry ID,
    2) how can I unlink it and use my new BIS account with my old BlackBerry ID and
    3) if I can't, how do I get my BlackBerry Protect data and App World purchases back?
    I'd prefer having the first two questions answered, because I'm sure switching providers and therefore BIS accounts is a pretty common thing, so there must be some do this right, right? I hope there's some way to fix it, because if I have to choose between "keep apps but live without email" and "have push mail and repurchase all apps", I'd probably choose Android instead.
    PS: I also tried to find a way to contact RIM, so they could somehow unlink my old BIS account from my BlackBerry ID, but there's really not such a thing as "BlackBerry Support". The only thing I found was a button on the App World page for refunds etc, but even there the link was dead.
    Solved!

    I have no insight into if the carrier you are using should or should not be on that list. All I have is what you reported (that they can't escalate) coupled with that list...which leads me to conclude that they are not a fully authorized BB carrier. They would seem to be somehow affiliated though, since indeed you were able to set up BIS services with them. But, I do know of other carriers that are not listed...and as I recall they are something of a sub to a fully authorized carrier, and somehow provide services through that other carrier (who has the formal contract with RIM). I'm really guessing here as I have absolutely no insight into anything authoritative on this matter.
    Regarding the contractually required formal support model...it works like this. You contract with a carrier for services. As part of that contract, you agree to a support model, and that support model starts with them (normally...as I said earlier, some models in some regions use service centers instead...you must review your specific documentation to know what the actual support model is for your specific contract). Consequently, all service-related support needs that you have must start with your carrier (or service center)...contractually, you are not allowed to bypass them and seek formal help direct from RIM. Hence the cost of the direct-to-RIM Incident Support system...you are electing to bypass your contract, and doing so is not "free". (There are also contracts between the carriers and RIM which further require that the carriers provide that front-line support to their end users, and provide the carriers with certain controls over some things that the end users are allowed access to...but that's just in support of the contract between you and your carrier.)
    Now, in some situations (yours included, sadly), it gets even more complex. What I said above applies solely to the services you receive on your BB (voice, data, email, etc.). But, that has nothing to do with support for the device itself (e.g., warranty)...that's a separate contract, and was executed at the time of purchase between you and your place of purchase. That place of purchase (or assigned service center) is responsible for all support for the device itself (warranty, etc.). Again, this servicing (e.g., warranty) is delegated from RIM to the resellers...RIM provides zero front line support for devices, services, etc...none...all of that is contractually delegated down from RIM to various other entities (the carriers, resellers, service centers, etc.). RIM provides warranty and such, but the servicing of such is provided by others from a front line perspective...again, escalation into RIM is available to those front-line entities, but not to end users (save for the fee-based Incident Support model).
    In your case, this could get quite messy. All too often, a service related issue is ignored by the carrier if they discover that they also did not originally sell the device to the end user (if they sold both the device and service, they would be responsible for all support for everything). They have a sad tendency to "blame the device" when it's really a service issue, and ignore the plea from the end user. Despicable, yes...but it happens all too often. And it get's worse...the device support entity will often likewise blame the service entity. The sad part of this bad scenario is that it's the end user who is left out in the cold with no service nor support from anyone that will actually aid their situation. Hopefully, this really poor outcome happens only rarely...but I know 100% (from reports on this forum) that it does happen more than 0%. I hope it does not come to pass for you, but I thought I'd warn you about it just in case so that you can be prepared for it.
    All in all, I think what I'd suggest is that you press 1udn1 for support and escalation on this. Get them to tell you why they have no escalation path since, as far as you understand, they are 100% responsible for all of your service-related support, and that is exactly what this situation is, and they need to resolve it for you one way or another. Escalate with them to managers with them...the front line folks you reach likely won't have any authority to do anything "off script"...and you'll likely need that. Stress to them that you PAY THEM for your services and service-related support...and right now they are delivering neither to you, yet you continue to PAY THEM. Get them to reveal why they have no escalation capability...and see if they will reveal that they are sub to another carrier who does have that capability, and see if you can escalate that way.
    You also may want to contact your former carrier...perhaps they did not fully release something related to your BB/BIS account, and that is what is preventing it from migrating to your new device? It is quite normal to migrate a BIS account from device to device (15 in one year, as I recall), so that one can retain their AW purchase records and such. This holds true crossing carriers...indeed, I've had one BIS account for years, and it started on one carrier and is now on a different one, and all my things are properly intact. Something is wrong "inside" preventing yours from doing so, and that needs attention "inside" to resolve for you.
    Good luck!

    Hello again.
    I'm still having problems with this. I made
    a simple servlet that reads from and writes
    to text file. The reading part work fine on my
    computer, but the writing doesn't, not even
    an exception is thrown if the file exists that
    I'm trying to write to. If I try to create a new
    file I'll get an exception about file permissions.
    I also asked a friend of mine to try this same
    servlet on his windows computer and it works
    as it should.
    Here's the code
    import javax.servlet.*;
    import javax.servlet.http.*;
    import java.io.*;
    public class ReadServlet extends HttpServlet
         public void doPost(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException
              String s = "";
              PrintWriter out = response.getWriter();
              String docroot = getServletContext().getRealPath( "/" );
              out.println("docroot: "+docroot);
              File file = new File(docroot+"test.txt");
              if(file.exists())
                   s = readFile(file);
                   out.println(s);
              else
                   out.println("file not found");
                   //file.createNewFile();                    // causes exception
                   //out.println("new file created.");
              writeFile(file, "written by servlet");
              out.println("Now look in the file "+file.getPath());
              out.println("and see if it contains text 'written by servlet'");
         public void doGet(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException
              doPost(request, response);
         private String readFile(File file)
              FileInputStream fis = null;
              BufferedInputStream bis = null;
              DataInputStream dis = null;
              String s = "";
              try
                   fis = new FileInputStream(file);
                   bis = new BufferedInputStream(fis);
                   dis = new DataInputStream(bis);
                   s = dis.readLine();
                   fis.close();
                   bis.close();
                   dis.close();
              catch(Exception e)
                   e.printStackTrace();
              return s;
         private void writeFile(File file, String s)
              FileOutputStream fos = null;
              BufferedOutputStream bos = null;
              DataOutputStream dos = null;
              try
                   fos = new FileOutputStream(file);
                   bos = new BufferedOutputStream(fos);
                   dos = new DataOutputStream(bos);
                   dos.writeChars(s);
                   fos.flush();
                   bos.flush();
                   dos.flush();
                   fos.close();
                   bos.close();
                   dos.close();
              catch(Exception e)
                   e.printStackTrace();
    }And if someone wants to test this servlet I can
    give a war package.
    Any advices?

    Have you called them again? "They" need to figure this out. It's not a BlackBerry problems.
    ALSO: You have your mobile phone number listed as your "My Mobile Provider" or carrier. Putting your phone number out on the internet on these public forums for the world to see, is not wise. To change that, at the top of this page click on My Settings > Personal Profile > Personal Information, and in the entry block for "Carrier" type the name of your mobile provider.

    hi everyone I have a problem with my torch 9800 when I connect to WiFi and want to enter in to a website in the browser it doesn't let me and have this message The data service not operational. so please if anyone who can help me out and Also I can't use either whatsapp and facebook with Wifi why? Do I need an upgrade or something like that? Thank You

    You need BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service) on your account to access certain features. Your phone doesn't actually route data through BIS when you're on Wi-Fi but it requires BIS to receive the required service books for Wi-Fi access. Without BIS, using the Opera Mini browser is about your only option.
    Cheers.

  • Problem with some user accounts receiving email

    We are running Exchange 2003 and having our end users get their email via Outlook Web Access on their Blackberry devices, and are having a problem with just some users. When we go into BIS, we can setup their account just fine, but they never receive any e-mails. They can send e-mails fine also. We have done the following tests:
    1. I have setup my AT&T Curve to check my e-mail, works fine.
    2. I have three users I'm currently using as my "test group" since this problem began. Two using Verizon Storms, and one using a Verizon Bold. All three can send e-mail fine, one of the storm users can check e-mail, but not the other two.
    3. I have setup these accounts on my (known working from test 1) Blackberry Curve, and get the same results. I cannot receive e-mail on either of those two accounts.
    I don't see any errors in any logs (unless I am looking in the wrong place). I've even gone throught adsiedit and compared the msexch* settings and they all seem comperable. Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

    Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
    Outlook has settings that dictate what it does when you have it grab your email from the server. The location is variable depending on Outlook version...I can only give you the steps for my version (2K7). From within Outlook:
    Tools > Account Settings > select the account > Change > More Settings > Advanced
    On that screen, you must change the "Delivery" options so that the messages are left on the server for BIS to be able to retrieve them. BIS grabs email every 15 minutes. If you have Outlook running and have it grabbing email every 5 minutes AND have it (via this screen) removing the email from the server when it does so, then there will be nothing for BIS to grab when it makes its next scheduled attempt. You need to change these settings to something that allows BIS to have something to grab from the server when it tries.
    What to set these to is a function of your needs and your email providers policies. Typically, if you set Outlook to Leave messages on the server yet remove them after 1 day, you can stay within all needs and policies.
    Hope that helps!

  • Problem with Runtime.exec()

    Hi,
    I'm having a problem with Runtime.exec() . I have a batch file with debug option to FTP the desktop file to mainframe. When I executed this in Windows it's shows me the responce from the server (like ' Transfer Completed' ) for my FTP commands. But when I launch this through java it's only shows the errors not the normal responces from the server. I need this responses to confirm the proper transfer of file.
    My Java Code:
    String strCommand = "cmd.exe /c " + outdirectory + batchfilename;
    boolean bWait = true;
    Runtime r = Runtime.getRuntime();
    Process pr = r.exec(strCommand);
    BufferedInputStream bis =new BufferedInputStream(pr.getInputStream ());
    int c=0;
    /** Outlet for IO for the process **/
    while (c!=-1) {
    c=bis.read();
    /**Now wait for the process to get finished **/
    if(bWait == true){
    pr.waitFor();
    pr.destroy();
    My Batch file is :
    FTP -n -d -s:C:\IT2.cmd > C:\tIT2.log
    EXIT
    Thanks
    Sathiesh

    Ahh, you are redirecting the standard out from the ftp command to a file, therefore no output is sendt back to your java code,
    you have to redirect the stderr stream, not the stdout stream in your batch file;
    FTP -n -d -s:C:\IT2.cmd 2> C:\tIT2.log(notice the "2>" instead of ">")
    Now your batch file should direct the error stream to the log, and the standard output back to the java program.
    (I'm used to UNIX streams, not NT, but the "2>" redirection should work on NT also I guess)

  • Problems with Downloading Applications onto my Blackberry from device!

    I am having problems downloading applications.  I haven't even been able to download the Blackberry App World either.  I know it's not a problem with connection with BIS or my service provider and what not because I can do other things like email and bbm, SMS, calling, facebook, etc.
    Basically when I go to click "download in Blackberry App World" for any application (example: crunchSMS) it says "cannot view this page, save onto device" (or something along those lines) and then when I click yes it asks me where I want to save, either my media card or the device (I can choose a folder) but then after that I either can't find it or it won't open/download anything when I go to access it.
    Now, when I go to download Blackberry App World it says that my device doesn't meet system requirements even though I just updated my device to the newest system (5.0?, anyway App World only requires 4.6, I think) but I still keep getting this message.
    I live in Amman, Jordan and my service provider is ZainJO if that helps with answering my problem.
    I really want to take advantage of this part of my blackberry because it would be really helpful and fun!
    Thanks!

    Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
    Please check this page to ensure you meet the minimum requirements (including if it is available in your country):
    http://na.blackberry.com/eng/services/appworld/download.jsp
    If it is available in your country and you feel you meet the device-level system requirements, then contact your carrier to ensure that you meet the service plan (from them) requirements for access (via their network) to AppWorld.
    Lastly, do be aware that AppWorld is merely a portal, vending apps developed mainly by others. As such, it is not your exclusive procurement source -- there are others that you can try (e.g., Handango, Handmark, BPlay, GetJAR or Mobihand). I have found that there are very few apps that are exclusive to AppWorld. You can search the on-line catalog and then search out other procurement sources, including quite often the developer website itself.
    Good luck!

  • Problem with 8100

    i havent had any problems with my blackberry pearl 8100 until yesterday it stopped charging anyone have any ideas? or is am i SOL?

    HI and Welcome to the Forums!
    By any chance, did you procure your BB 2nd hand? If so, then it may still be locked to the BIS system at the prior owners carrier...and only they (the prior owner) can get that released. See this article:
    http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB05099
    If the prior owner did not carry out all of their steps, then you are in trouble...you must track them down and get them to complete there steps.
    If the BB has always been yours from the start, then you need to contact your prior US carrier and conduct the steps in the KB above.
    Good luck!
