  • Program called Mac Guard

Lately my computer has been acting really slow and now this new program called Mac Guard popped up and keeps saying my computer is at risk and that the system is infected. Is my computer really at risk?

You need to get rid of that. MacGuard / MacDefender / MacSecurity. It has multiple names. It's malware not a virus.

Download and run the free application TinkerTool (not "TinkerTool System"), select the Finder tab, and uncheck the box labeled Show hidden and system files. Then click Relaunch Finder.

  • Has anyone any experience of MacKeeper which just popped up on my MacBookPro. Is it recommended?

Although MacKeeper, which has just popped up on my MacBookPro, looks good, I would be interested if anyone has installed this and if it's a reliable and useful software item.

MacKeeper is very reliable and useful....for the company that sells it. Not so much for the user. Wjosten took the words right out of my fingers. Avoid it like the plague.

  • MacKeeper/Zerobit Pop Up ad Problem

Can someone PLEASE tell me how to stop these MacKeeper/Zerobit pops from happening on my computer?
I've never used MacKeeper nor do I plan to ever use it now that this ad keeps popping up unwanted. What happens is I get this Mac "recommends" box that I have to click "Ok" for or completely quit Safari in order to get rid of it. Then there is this stupid ad for MacKeeper sitting there. I can seem to find anyway to get rid of it. Anyone else have this problem? Thanks.

I don't think some of the people responding to this thread understand something integral to the problem we are having... we DON'T have any files because we NEVER downloaded Zeobit Mackeeper in the first place. Not by accident, not on a "trial basis", NOTHING. This is not an issue about "fully" removing a program, this is simply SPAM or Malware or whatever else you want to call losing your ability to control your computer when using Safari.
Anyway, We've localized it to a particular website called "WowHead" it's a Warcraft Wiki type of site. I used two different machines and got the same result. Just head over to that website enough times and you'll get the pop up. I'm sure you can get the pop up from other sites as well. I appreciate the help that posters to this thread have offered, but I've unfortunately come to the conclusion that no one can has an answer to this problem... no matter how much they'd like to think they do or are graciously trying to help (as in the case of the 2nd poster). But good luck, if I find anything on the interwebz, I'll repost any info here!

Run ClamXav. It's a free virus checker. It should quarantine it.

  • Macbook pro 10.9.5 mackeeper keeps popping up and yahoo is my default engine even though I reset to google

Over the past two days, Mackeeper keeps popping up in a new tab, yahoo defaults as my search engine even though I have google set in preferences, and the "Top Sites" setting in preferences doesn't save. Seems I've somehow acquired some malware of sorts. I've searched the forums and have not found a solution that works on my machine yet.

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan. Remove it as follows.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. These instructions are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot," "Trovi," or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
    Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Then, still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates
    if it's not already checked.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Did I mess up by downloading MacKeeper?  Downloaded last year and today my computer is doing all kind of weird stuff and Mackeeper kept popping up to renew and I did.  Still have problems with my browser and popups!?

I downloaded MacKeeper last year.  Today my browser is messed up and I am getting popups.  MacKeeper keeps popping up to download, so I updated my subscription-still messed up. Is this malware and if so, why did it show up a year later and after I paid again to update!?

You installed a variant of the "VSearch" trojan. Remove it as follows.

You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the DownLite developer has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight is inexcusable and has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.

  • I have a dilema i use a programme called Mackeeper i accidentally moved several files to my trash,i would like to put the files back where they belong but put back option is in grey and wont work??

I have a dilema i use a programme called Mackeeper i accidentally moved several checked files to my trash BUT i didnt delete them,i would like to put the files back where they belong but the put back option is in grey and wont work?? i have spoken to Apple and to no avail !!!
Mackeeper moved my files to my trash so i pulled them out of my trash to my desktop it has copied them to my desktop as well as kept them in my trash!!
im so confused and things are not working properly anymore such as my google chrome for example...all my book marks are gone BUT i can go to the google file which is out of place on my desktop and view all my bookmarks data...ALL of my files still exist but they are just out of place now which is making it hard for certain options on my computer to work...
    the files includeAccounts,address book plug-ins,addressbook,Adobe,AIM,Alfred,Anquet Maps,Apple,Asramsoftware,Audio,Automatically add to itunes,facebook,facebook 15-53-13-329,faxfresh,five details,flipping book photo album, font collections, fonts, forismatic,Garageband,Gimp,Google,Google 15-53-13-344,icloud,icons,idocument lite,ilife media browser,ilifepage layout,internet plug-ins,ip scanner,itext express,itunes,iweb,Keyboard layouts,Keychains,launch agents,Librarian,limit point software,logs,mail,mail 15-53-13-895,messages,metadata,mobile documents,mobiscope,moso,movie effects,mozilla,MPlayerx,mywebcamBroadcaster,Native instruments,Skype and LOADS more......
HOW do i get this stuff back to where it is supposed to go so that these programmes work properly again???? i also used delete and command but that did not work either, like i said i have not emptied my trash and ALL the info is there its just totally out of place and the put back option will not work sor some reason!!??? im running 10.8.5 imac someone PLEASE help me!!
i have not set up time machine either but i do back up to a site called backupblaze...

    Step 1
    Remove "MacKeeper" as follows.
"MacKeeper" has only one useful feature: it deletes itself.
Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.
IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the functional components of the software will be deleted. Reboot.
Failure to remove MacKeeper will result from neglecting any one of these points:
Quit MacKeeper before dragging it to the Trash.
Don't empty the Trash after dragging the application to it. Let MacKeeper delete itself.
Don't try to drag the MacKeeper icon in the Dock to the Trash.
Here are some general suggestions. If you want your computer to be usable, don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” "boosters," “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, this stuff is useless, or worse than useless.
The more actively promoted the product, the more likely it is to be garbage. The most extreme example is the “MacKeeper” scam.
The only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for — such as creating, communicating, and playing — and does not modify the way other software works. Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it.
    Step 2
Restore from the last backup that predates the unwanted changes.

  • I used a third party programme called Mackeeper UGHHH,it moved loads of files to the trash now i do not know where they originally came from or belong!! the put back option is in grey??how can i manually put these files back where they belong?SO upset!!

  • I have Firefox 3.6.13 and this message just popped up tonight

I have Firefox 3.6.13 and this message just popped up tonight while trying to download and listen to the Audio or the Video download. This website has both an audio and video version of the program. I was able to fix the audio by removing Firefox and reinstalling it. The second message (below) keeps popping up when I try to download and view the video version of the same program. The site has both Audio and video and I can listen to the audio using Real Player but I still can’t watch the Video period. I get the Video message below? I do not have this problem using Opera 11.01
Audio: Ok now, fixed by reloading Firefox
C:\Users\Gary\AppData\Local\Temp\300-024-16.mp3 could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences.
    Video:
C:\Users\Gary\AppData\Local\Temp\WorkingInvestor20110202.wmv-3.wvx could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences.
How do I fix this, again the Audio using Real player is OK but not the video?

Caused by the Ask Toolbar extension in Firefox 3.6.13, disable that extension or un-install it.

In my dock there was this weird program called "tutorial". While throwing away this program I had to fill in my password. Afterwards I tried to change my password, but my old password doesn't work anymore. Who can help?

What was this program for, or did you just assume it's something you shouldn't have and therefore arbitrarily decide to "throw it away"? Exactly how did you supposedly throw it away?
If you didn't change your administrator password, there's no reason it shouldn't work now, so that suggests you did something else, or changed it and then forgot what it was.
You can't recover that password; you can only change it. To do that, you would need to boot from your Snow Leopard DVD, choose your language, then choose Reset Password from the Utilities menu in the top menu bar.
