A query about Time Capsule, Ethernet, and DSL modems...
When I originally set up my modem, I used the network assistant and it seemed to "auto-connect", where the assistant tells you that your ISP "may allow you" etc. This was done with the ethernet cable as Modem to Macbook Pro. Then when I purchased a TC, I simply connected the ethernet cable to the TC and let Airport Utility set up a wireless network.
All was fine, until I was trying to ensure my security was half-decent. I changed a few settings in the TC, and then spent an afternoon trying to get my MBP to "see" the wireless network. I got that managed as well.
What's confusing me is this, and I hope someone can help me and explain it like I'm a 5-year-old.
1. In speaking with the ISP tech support, they seemed pretty sure I had to enter specific DCHP, DNS, etc. values in their fields, yet with the network assistant, it seemed to do this not only on its own, but with different values (numbers) then the one tech support told me to use, including an assigned "public" 192 IP address.
2. Moreover, the ISP told me I should use PPPoE, yet the network assistant seemed just fine with Ethernet and DCHP.
3. My ethernet IP address (System preferences/Network) is different from my Airport IP address. Is this normal?
4. Strangely, when I connect another ethernet cable from the TC ethernet out port to the MBP (I was attempting a quicker Time Machine incremental back up), and turned Airport off (as an experiment), I still have internet connectivity. I thought TC ethernet out to MBP would only be for disk data transfer. Is this normal? If I have Airport "ON", would that cable then only be used for data transfer?
5. I have the TC in Bridge Mode, with Access Control to "Not Enabled". I originally had my MBP and iPod Touch MAC addresses added to Access Control, until I read that this doesn't really help with security. As it stands now, I increased my WPA2 password from an easy to remember one to a random 25 character one. Basically, I am hoping someone can tell me the settings I should use (with detail) to make both the network settings AND the wireless network as safe as possible without having a computer science degree.
Additional information: I only use my MBP and iPod Touch, and the wireless network is only for my use. No guests whatsoever. I do have a usb printer connected to the TC. The modem has a wireless "WLAN" feature which I have turned off since I have the TC. For my email accounts, I have the correct ports entered, as far as I can tell and as far as I've been told by those providers. I occasionally use Acquisition (not sure how safe it is security wise), and I'm often online playing Call of Duty 4 (wirelessly). I think that all I can think of that's important.
I really appreciate everyone's comments and guidance.

Whichever connection is toward the top of the list in System Preferences-> Network preference pane is the one which will be used.

WPA2 with a long non-dictionary password is the best wireless security.

If your ISP uses PPPoE for Internet connections, the device connecting directly to the DSL modem should be configured to use PPPoE.

I have connected a new Time Capsule to a DSL modem using an ethernet cable . The modem is working fine and connected fine. But the Time Capsule doesnt seem to be talking to the modem. If you did not put it in bridge then it is not in bridge..
Connect a computer directly to the modem.. open the browser to either 192.168.1.254 or 10.0.0.138 (if neither of those work you will have to check the IP address your ISP has set).
BTW who is your ISP and do they allow PPPoE.. for instance most ISP in UK do not use pppoe so you have no choice but to run the 585 as a router. In which case bridge the TC
Anyway.. open the setup configuration in the Thomson and select a template that says bridge.. run through the wizard and it will then bridge the modem.
And I am using Airport Utility 6.0. How do I get the earlier version?
By reading the site link I just gave you.. downloading the utility and running it on your computer. Or simply google to 5.6 lion airport utility... that is the way I find things when I don't have the link memorised.
Finally, AIrport Utility shows a number in a red dot next to the time capsule icon, currently 2. What is that for? What does it tell us?
Firstly download the useful utility.. but the dots tell you something is wrong and preventing the TC from working.. if you open the utility it should tell you what the errors mean.. I cannot tell you what they are, but it is likely to be no internet connection and pppoe has failed. -
Config Time Capsule with ZyXEL DSL modem/router

I have been beating my head about this for the last week or so and it had drove me to drink (Really short drive by the way). I have CenturyLink DSL Service with a modem that they provided (ZyXEL PK5000Z), this is a modem/Wi-Fi router. What I am trying to do is have my Time Calsule be the Wi-Fi router so my AirPort Express can extend the network and do what it does to get my devices connected. When ever I have my Time Capsule connected to the modem, it will drop the internet connection within 10 min to 30 min, but when I have the modem wired to my Mac it stays connected for days. I have tried many different configs and putting the Time Capsule in "Bridged" mode with the ethernet cable in both the internet port and LAN port... same problem. If anyone could please help me get this setup, that would be amazing... plus this would save me from having to call the CenturyLink Tech Support line.

JamesStrange things happen.. the TC should be fine bridged to the Zyxel.. as long as you turn off wireless in the Zyxel and only use wireless in the TC.. you must create the wireless network.. not join a network.. people try to do both at the same time and end up in a mess.
Then you can check the extend wireless network in the TC and airport should be able to extend it.
But I would also add the following.
Fix radio channels.. if you have difficulties the less auto the better.
Use SMB names ie short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric for everything but particularly wireless.
And use a different name for 5ghz.
Use only WPA2 Personal security.
If you lay off the grog for a bit it helps keep the mind clear.. to think through the things.. although I do understand the frustration.
Let me suggest you post all the setup screen shots and that can help us loads to figure out if you are making a mistake. -
I have connected my time capsule to motorola SG6580 modem via ethernet. I have a wireless network on the motorola and a wireless network from the time capsule. I get duplicate IPs error messages (no connection) sometimes when trying to connect devices to the wireless network. How do I fix? Sometimes devices cannot connect to the network because of conflicting IPs. I look on the Motorola and every device has a unique IP assigned but occasionally a device has taken the IP of another device. I have been writing down all the devices and the IPs they have been using. It happens more with PCs than Macs, ipads or iPhones.
If the Time Capsule is set up correctly in bridge mode, then it is the responsibility of the Motorola modem/router to provide the correct IP address assignments for all devices on the network.
Check to insure that the Time Capsule is correctly set up to operate in bridge mode as follows:
On your Mac, open AirPort Utility
Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Network tab at the top of the next window
Insure that the setting for Router Mode is configured to read "Off (Bridge Mode)"
Once you have confirmed that the Time Capsule is configured correctly, everything else is the responsibility of the Motorola modem/router as far as network routing and IP address assignments for devices.
If you continue to have IP address issues, then you should contact the Internet Service Provider (ISP) that provided the Motorola device to you and ask them to fix the issue. -
Setting up Time Capsule with Fairpoint DSL and AT&T Micro Cell

Would I need to connect my time capsule directly to the router for first time set up?
If so, would I have to keep it connected to the router all the time after the first time set up, or can I keep it in another room?
Our wireless network was created back when we were a Windows household, so we still control it using Network Magic on an old laptop.
I unlocked the network (using Network Magic) when I tried to set up the Time Capsule (wirelessly, and before calling Apple), and after entering the network password my macbook recognized the TC and I got the good little green light on the TC. As soon as I locked up the network, I got the flashing amber light on the TC and airport utility couldn't find it anymore (using Airport utility version 6.1)... I unlocked the network again, the light turned green. I locked it back up, the light started flashing amber again...

Can I Partition a Time Capsule? and more...
My existing setup consists of an Airport Extreme wirelessly supporting 2 MacBooks ("MBs") 5 iOS devices, 2 WiFi/Airprint printers and then by wire (Ethernet) a couple of other devices. In addition, the Extreme has a USB external hard drive visible/accessible to both MBs. Both MBs have their own external hard drives configured as Time Machines. All devices have latest software upgrades/updates.
I am thinking of replacing the Extreme with a 3TB Time Capsule ("TC") and I propose to Partition the TC's drive into 3 – with one partition supporting MB1's TM, the second supporting MB2's TM, and the third partition supporting/acting like a common hard drive (the same as exists external on the Extreme). The existing external hard drives acting as TMs would be set aside and saved for TM recoveries; the TC situate TMs would simply commence as new TMs (I envision difficulties not worth the effort in moving the existing TM backups to the TC).
Query 1: Can the latest 3TB Time Capsule be partitioned as I have proposed? (The reason I pose the question is a series of discussions dating back to 2012 that indicate a TC cannot be partitioned but the current Apple Store page for the 3TB TC indicates a TC can support multiple TMs: "you can back up all the Mac computers in your home to a central location.") A review indicates the TC established at least two TMs automatically, but I'd like to also dedicate some space for a third partition non-TM drive….so, the Q – can I partition a TC?
Query 2: Would I just be better off not trying to partition the TC and just letting it support two TMs automatically and plugging in a separate hard drive, as I currently have? (Why hasn't Apple upgraded the USB connection to 3.0? oh, well, they probably will a month after I buy mine, right? )

The Time Capsule drive cannot be partitioned in a traditional sense unless you pull the drive from the Time Capsule (which voids the warranty), place the drive in a SATA to USB caddy or enclosure, attach the caddy directly to a Mac, and then use Disk Utility for the formatting operation. Once that is done, then you have to reinstall the drive back in the Time Capsule. Not a job for the faint of heart....and best left to a technician.
The Time Capsule "as is", can support multiple Time Machine backups from different Macs, but is basically a free for all as far as space is concerned. Time Machine backs up to a special file called a sparsebundle on the Time Capsule, and while it is possible to modify or limit the size of the sparsebundle file for each Mac, it is a complex operation. Plug the TC into the Computer by ethernet and make sure the computer shows the link is running at gigabit.. if not replace the cable.
Turn off wireless.. there should be only one data path.. ethernet.
Turn IPv6 to link local only in the computer network setup for ethernet. -

I consider Time Capsule slow, mainly because it depends upon a wireless network for backing up. I tried it, but went back to the plug and play FW800 wired backup. Since you want easy, the external hard drive is about as easy as it gets. Buy. Unpack. Plug into your Mac. Format (if you don't buy a Mac formatted one, which is unnecessary). Go to System Preferences>Time Machine. Choose the disk as the time machine. Turn on. -

RedViviAccording to Time Capsule manual, it's written that a hard reset would retain saved profiles, so I supposed it was saved into the Time Capsule. It is not the case ?
Manual quotation about Time Capsule:
"*Saved profiles are used in more recent versions of AirPort Base Stations and Time Capsule to store up to five configurations, known as profiles. A profile contains base station settings, such as names and passwords, and network configuration information, such as the way the base station connects to the Internet. Using profiles may be useful if you move your device from one location to another."

Okay so I set up my Time Capsule already and is now backing up 2 of my iMacs. Works great. What I want to know is how to use the TC to directly store files? I want to do this to delete some files on iMac 20inch but still have them on the TC for future reference..eg some movies on iTunes. I want to directly save them on the drive so I can delete them from iTunes and gain some storage. (Ps on iMac 20 inch (it's almost full - 320 GB) when I enter time machine, a tab comes up on finder which reads "Time Machine backups" it's able to be ejected like a disc or a connected device. On the iMac 20 inch, I dragged some files onto there as if using it like a hard drive. Is this the correct method? Then I went to my 27inch iMac and saw the "Time Machine Backups" hoping to see the files I dragged from the 20inch iMac. But the files were not there except a folder that said "Backups.backupdb". Can someone help me?
It's not a good idea to use a network disk for both Time Machine backups and other things. By design Time Machine will eventually consume all the space on its output disk, which will then cause problem for your other files. I'd store those other files on an external disk connected to the Time Capsule. The problem with that is that Time Machine will only back up files that are local to your Mac. That means that you'll only have one copy of the files on or attached to your Time Capsule.

My Time Capsule expired and no longer works. My printer (a HP) will now not work as it still wishes to connect through the Time Capsule. It will not allow itself be recognised through a USB connection to my Mac. Anyone got any ideas?
You will need to install the printer on your Mac
Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
Open Print & Fax
Click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the printer list
Wait for your printer to appear in the next box, then click it to highlight it
Click Add at the lower right
Be sure to select the correct printer when you try to print as you will see your printer listed twice. Good idea to make the printer now installed on your Mac the default printer so you do not have to choose which printer to use each time you want to print.
You can also go into Print & Fax, select the printer associated with the Time Capsule and click the - (minus) button if you want to delete that location. -
got an error message saying "an error occurred while creating the backup folder". I have tried deleting the plist and am using the latest time capsule software and using OS Lion Any ideas what to do please?

And what does it mean "to administrate" because it was written in requirement of the Airport Time Capsule 2TB ?You must use a Mac running Lion (10.7.5), Mountain Lion or Mavericks to be able to set up the Time Capsule and make any changes to the settings.
A recent version iPhone or iPad could also be used for this task.

Time Capsule (Tower) and Airport Express

Power off both AirPort Express devices
Wait a minute
Power up the A1264 for a minute or two
Hold in the reset button on the Express for 8-10 seconds and release
Allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
On your Mac, click on the AirPort icon at the top of the screen
Click on AirPort Express under the setting of New AirPort Base Station
The setup utility will open up. Follow the prompts
Set up the other Express the same way. -

What is the spec difference between Time Capsule 2009 and 2011? I am looking at refurbished Time Capsules and the discriptions dont really help me.

Means it uses both 2.4ghz band and 5ghz at the same time.. Most N wireless is 2.4ghz.. some can do either 2.4 or 5ghz.. but not at the same time.. TC can do both at the same time. It is a good thing.
Also, is it a good thing that it has been used 6-12 months?
No, it is not good.. but you have no idea of the history of the product. For a time capsule that matters. If it has been used for 12months, that comes off the lifespan at the other end.
For what you save buying new might be well worth it.
