  • Just bought my first iMac, quick question about bootcamp

    Hello,
I'm finally upgrading my 6 year Dell with a new 27" iMac.
This is my first Apple desktop, but I will use bootcamp to have the ability to boot into windows (since I still use windows for work and still have a lot of windows programs I use)
My question is related to an external harddrive.
I'd like to have one external drive with all of my media type files (music, videos...etc) and share the drive between to the Mac and Windows bootcamp partitions.
Can anyone let me know what is best way to format the drive so it can read/write on both Mac and Windows?
Fat32 probably would work because I don't think I have any files larger than 4GB, but what about the ExFat format. Is this my best option.
I figure I'd ask the experts so I don't have to reformat the drive multiple times.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

The best thing is to format the drive NTFS or OS X, then get third-party software to enable compatibility. For example you can use NTFS for Mac 10.0.2 or Tuxera NTFS 2012.3.6 to enable write capability to an NTFS formatted drive from OS X. From Windows you could use MediaFour's MacDrive software that enables Windows to read and write an OS X formatted drive.
NTFS maintains the highest level of compatibility when moving files back and forth.

  • Question about bootcamping windows 7

Hello everyone, i just received my macbook pro 13 inch (specs aren't important for my question) I am getting ready to do the whole boot-camp thing (please forgive any ignorance on my part, this is my first mac) i want Windows 7- home and student edition... now my question to you all is --- Which CD do i need to purchase? there is the 'upgrade' version, the 'full' version, etc. if i even need to buy/obtain a disk, which do i need? and is there a difference in performance, or what all you can do between the different versions? etc. PLEASE HELP! Thank you for your time!! :P

Hmm.. i see, so what are all my options then? (preferably the cheapest way...) to get windows 7 - home and student edition as my windows OS for bootcamp? what would i have to do/buy to just use the upgrade instead of the Full $200 version? the reason i want to know obviously is because, i already have Windows XP disks and maybe another older one from previous computer purchases, and the upgrade version is around $90 or so, and full is $200 like i said.. just trying to save some money, suggestions are welcomed! Thank you for your efforts Kappy, i am grateful.

  • Question about Bootcamp

I am going to be getting a copy of windows 7 from Microsoft dreamspark. My question is that since it is a downloaded file and not a hard copy will I still be able to install windows with bootcamp?
    Thanks,
    Tom

That didn't work for me. I get an error saying can't find the install disk or something like that. The disk is in the drive and the computer does read it just not in Bootcamp.
I burned it at 2.4X that is the lowest option I have and burn the .ISO file on there. I even burned one copy with just all the files instead of the .ISO file and still nothing.

  • Important question about bootcamp

I need a new notebook for college. I went to the apple store to ask some questions. I need bootcamp in order to run certain programs like CAD, and 3D rendering software that only comes on windows.
I asked the specialist if bootcamp came on the regular macbook. he said no, it only comes on the macbook pro. I obviously believed him but now I am looking at the apple site and it says that it DOES come with bootcamp. Who is right? the specialist or the website?
I really really need bootcamp but I cannot afford a macbookpro. I would have to take out a student loan.

He just wanted to up-sell you the more expensive MacBook Pro. BootCamp will run fine on MacBook. You can use your old copy of XP, but a retail copy (not the one that came with your other Windows computer, the so-called recovery disks). And it also needs to include SP2. Once you have it installed (along with the drivers from your MacBook's Leopard disk), you have 30 days to activate it. You can try to activate it online. If it doesn't let you, try using a phone-call. If it still doesn't let you, then you need to get a new copy of Windows XP and enter the new serial number.

  • PLEASE HELP! Just switched to Mac and I have a few questions about bootcamp

I am looking to load Boot Camp onto my MacBook and want to know if it is necessary to save things like songs to an external hard drive(the computer is new so i don't have any important documents or files on it).
Second Question: I would consider myself somewhat of an intermediate user on the PC operating system but I am new to Mac and want to know if I should run Boot Camp on my own knowing just the basics of Mac.
    Thanks for any help,

If you have nothing important, don't worry. If you want to save the songs to an external hard drive do so. The key is being aware that you could lose everything, so you should back up anything and everything you don't want to lose. If you can't afford to lose the songs, back them up somewhere. If it were me, I would back up the entire computer, just in case, but that's me. Just be sure to unplug the external hard drive before commencing the Windows installation.
As for running Boot Camp on your own, I don't see why not. Most of the problems people have is not with Boot Camp per se but with the installation of Windows. In particular, take care to not overwrite or break your Leopard installation by selecting the wrong disk partition to install Windows on, and make sure you then format (or quick format) the Boot Camp partition to FAT or NTFS. Do not choose the "convert to NTFS" option!

  • Question about BootCamp/Windows licenses

I currently have a MBP that I'd like to install Windows 7 on via BootCamp.  In 1-2 years I'll be upgrading to a MBP Retina.  When I transfer my data over, will the Windows partition transfer too?  Or will I have to buy another Windows 7 license?
Basically, I'm wondering if I buy a license now and use it on my current computer, will I be buying another one in a year or two for my new one?

No, you do not need to buy a new license as long as you have a single active Windows installation. You can transfer the license from the current MBP to the rMBP by calling Microsoft.

  • Question about Bootcamp XP install on seperate drive on Mac Pro

I installed a seperate drive for boot camp and while I was running 10.4 it appeared in the control panel and at start with option key. After upgrading to 10.5 it no longer appears under in the control panel, however I can still boot from it by using the option key. Does anyone know how (aside from reinstalling XP) that I can get it back in the control panel?

After you installed Leopard did you then boot up on the Windows side and insert the Leopard CD in the drive so that Windows can update the drivers and boot camp? If not then try that and see if boot camp appears in the control panel after that.

  • Question about BootCamp on MBP

I am perhaps getting a MBP for work as I travel and use Mac to do most everything... however, the company I work for is unfortunately so closed minded that they will not convert to Mac. So...
I will be installing a Windows partition on the MBP so I can use Windoze too. That being said, if I utilize external hard drives, will both partitions be able to acces the hd?
I know that macs can access Windoze-formatted HDs, but Windoze is too stupid to be able to read Mac drives... will an HD formatted on a MacIntel system be readable by both Mac and Windoze?
    Anyone doing this?

Thanks folks, it looks like MacDrive WOULD be the best route for me to take as I believe FAT32 limits your write filesize to only 2Gb.
I work with a lot of raw Video/Audio footage and capture it via Mac.
    Thanks, this is considered "Solved".

  • I have a Macbook Pro june 2011... I have 8GB ram but I only have 256mb VRAM... I've read some other questions about this and I realized... Why do I not have 560mb of VRAM since I have 8GB of RAM? Is there any way to get more VRAM to play games on steam?

    I have a Macbook Pro june 2011... I have 8GB ram but I only have 256mb VRAM...
I've read some other questions about this and I realized... Why do I not have 560mb of VRAM since I have 8GB of RAM?
Is there any way to get more VRAM to play games on steam?
I've learned  by reading other topics that I can't upgrade my graphics card on my Macbook Pro because it's soldered into the motherboard or somthing like that, but please tell me if there is any way to get more video ram by chaning some setting or upgrading something else. I'd also like to know why I only have 256MB of VRAM when I have 8GB of RAM, since I have 8GB of RAM I thought I was supposed to have 560mb of VRAM...
    So the two questions are...
Is there any way to upgrade my VRAM, so that I can play games on steam?
Why do I only have 256MB VRAM when I have 8GB total RAM?
    Other Info:
    I have a quad core i7 Processor.
My graphcics card is the AMD Radeon HD 6490M.
I am also trying to play games on my BOOTCAMPed side of my mac, or my Windows 7 Professional side.
THANK YOU SO MUCH IF YOU CAN REPLY,
    Dylan

The only two items that a user can change on a MBP are the RAM and HDD (Retinas not included).  You have what the unit came with and the only way you will be able to change that is to purchase a MBP with superior graphics
If you are very much into gaming, the I suggest A PC.  They are far superior for that type of application to a MBP.
    Ciao.

  • Questions about Macbook

I am about to go into my first year of college this July, and I've been looking for a laptop. I've used iMacs before a little bit, but I have a few questions about the Macbook Pro and Mac OS X 10.5. So if someone can help me that would be great.
First of all: How is the Macbook Pro overall as a laptop? Is it a pretty good one?
Secondly: How good is the back-up utility? (Time Machine) Is it pretty good? How big of an external hard drive would I need to back up everything?
Third question: How is the program Boot Camp? I'm planning on putting Windows XP Pro on the Mac using Boot Camp. How is compatibility? Also I've heard that if you make the partition for Windows less than 32 GB, the partitions would be able to "see" each other... does that mean Mac OS X can read FAT 32 drives? Would I be able to transfer files between the two OSs with that setup?
and lastly: Would Mac OS X be able to read my flash drive?
    Thanks in advance everyone

I find it phenomenal, the best laptop I've used. OS X is a versatile and stable OS, and the hardware hasn't given me any trouble.
Secondly: How good is the back-up utility? (Time Machine) Is it pretty good? How big of an external hard drive would I need to back up everything?
It works great for me. You can't be nit-picky, so if you want a backup program with lots of settings there are plenty of options, but for those of us who just want something to fall back on when the HD goes kaput or we delete a file on accident, its perfect.

I haven't used it enough to answer the file sharing questions, but in my limited use it's been excellent, and many friends rave.
It's worth noting that when PC World was testing the fastest Windows Vista laptops, #1 was the MBP running Vista on BootCamp.
and lastly: Would Mac OS X be able to read my flash drive?
Yes. USB drives work great. The only thing, when you delete a file off a flash drive with default formatting, you'll only send it to a hidden "trashes" file. To permanently delete it off the stick, you'll need to push commandshiftdelete.
    Hope that helps!

  • OsX Clean Install - What about Bootcamp??

    Hello community!
I have a question. I want to install the new OSX Yosemite on my iMac (Late 2013). There is a HDD with 3TB. On this I have 2 partitions. One with Mavericks, the other one with Windows 8.1 Pro. Now I want to know, what about Bootcamp, when I make a clean install?! Do I need to install Windows Bootcamp again??
I hope, someone can help me!
    Thanks a lot!
    Best Regards
    Kevin

I think that by upgrading there shouldn't be any problems. But clean install on the OS X partition? That's my question too

  • 10.9 update, how about bootcamp?

I beleive that this topic is already well discussed, but I cannot find it. Please help.
I have MBP5,1 and it has 10.8.5. I'd like to update it to 10.9, but how about bootcamp valume? I have so many Windows apps.
My question is can I just update it to 10.9 (overwrite)? Does it affect bootcamp volume?
Or should I take a time and do it with winclone?
    Please advise!

    You should always have backups.
If your Mac's partitions are standard (including Bootcamp) and no resizing has taken place since Bootcamp was used there shouldn't be a problem upgrading to Mavericks.
If your partitions have been re-sized since installing Windows in Bootcamp then it is very possible that Windows could be lost or at least that repairs would need to be made to it - though that is not 100% successful.

  • Questions about Leopard

First of all, I've watched the WWDC keynote at least 4 times now, and I can't wait for leopard to come out. However, I've got a couple concerns. I don't want boot camp on my mac. Does anyone know if you can un-install it (I would think that it should be possible). I don't want anything at all to do with windows. I've also heard some rumors about parallels being on Leopard. First, I don't know too much about parallels. But what I do know (and think to be correct), is that parallels allows you to run windows apps on a mac without having to use bootcamp, and the windows os. My quesiton about parallels is really, what are the pro's and con's of having it on your system? Thanks in advance for your help.

Unless Boot Camp drastically changes from now until release, it merely enables those with Windows installation CDs to install Windows on their Macs. It does not enable Windows applications to run on their own without Windows being installed. For that you need WINE or CrossOver to be installed presently. Parallels is like Boot Camp but without the need to have a separate boot to install Windows applications (only an enclosed boot that runs side by side with Mac OS X), and without the need to partition your hard disk to install Windows which Boot Camp presently does.
Ignore rumors. No one really knows what will be on Leopard except developers who have signed a non-disclosure agreement. They would be breaking their agreement posting here. The Terms of Use on the right specifically forbid us from discussing unreleased products or rumors. Please read them more carefully, and don't ask questions about Leopard which are not answered on http://www.apple.com/macosx/

  • Question about using a SATA drive through an Epress34 card???

I have a basic question about OSX and how it treats a SATA drive hung from an Express34 SATA card. So OSX just treats any drive as a mounted drive as far as I know bbut what about when booting...
If, at boot up, I use the 'cmd C' option to select an external SATA dirve hanging off of an Express34 SATA card, will OSX see that drive as if it just were the internal drive in the MBP or is there some inherant difference between the real internal drive and any other SATA drive?
I guess the question is... does the cmd C option really just tell the OS to treat this drive as though it were the interal drive and boot from it (assuming the drive is bootable of course) or is ot doing something else.
If that is the case, why can't I use an external drive and install BootCamp on it, assumiong that I booted from this drive?
Is there a difference between an external SATA drive from an Express34 card and an external firewire drive?
    TIA,
    Peter
