A question about performance ( ram issue? )

Small question. I have a Macbook Pro unibody - it has a Corsair Solid State Drive in it. 4 gigs of ram. I have an external hard drive with a few hundred movies on it. Each movie's icon is notated with a picture of a flag where the movie's origin is. Anywho. When I click the HD to look at all my movies, it takes a bit for all of the pictures to load for the icons. Not only that when I scroll up or down some of the icon pics will disappear, then reappear. In other words - it's slow.
I previously had 8gb of ram in my 17 inch pro (i have a 15 now) - and I don't remember having this problem - but i don't really remember much. My question is - do you think this is a ram issue, an external hard drive issue - as in, it's not super fast, or some other issue. What can i do so when i open this folder up, I don't have serious lag time for the icons to show up? I think it's not a ram issue, i'm guessing it's an external issue - not so much that the external has a problem just that it's now fast, but want to check here to make sure. thanks.

How are you accessing the external harddrive? Firewire 800 is going to be faster than USB2.0 This I would expect, not RAM.
A faster connection or a faster external HD I suspect would be the answer.

  • A simple question about performance!

Hi! I have a simple question about performance. Suppouse that you have a servlet or a class with DB access, and you need to use a value several times in that page. What is best, to assign the value from say, a resultset or a request.getParameter() to a variable or to call the resultset or the request every time you need to retrieve that value? Which option uses less memory, which is faster, etc.?
    Hoping the best fou u
    Raul

If you need more values from a db, the best is to open some connections (connection pool) and use the for accessing the db.
To get the data only once, open the connection, get the data, store the data whereever you want: variable (class), hidden control (if you want to send from one page to another by request) and close the connection as quicky as possible.
The advantage of the first method is that the most time consuming activity (connections opening) is done only once.

  • Overclocking Core i5 750 on MSI GD80 Question about BCLK, RAM, and QPI

    Hi,
I am trying to overclock my core i5 750 processor to 3.6 Ghz (default is 2.66 Ghz) and I have an important question about the BCLK I should be setting so that my RAM would run at its default speed of 1600 (G. Skill Ripjaws 4 GB).
Basically, the only speeds I can set the BCLK at, to run the RAM at 1600, are 160 and 200 Mhz.  Right now, I have it set at 200 Mhz (160 is not enough to push the i5 to 3.6 Ghz sadly) and with a 20 multiplier, I got 3.6 Ghz on the i5.  But here are the questions:
    1.  My QPI speed is now at 6400 Mhz (far from the default 4800) - is that actually safe?
    2.  Is 200 BCLK way too high?  I haven't seen too many people overclocking using my settings...
    Thanks

"Too high" or not too high is a somewhat pointless question when it comes to overclocking.  From a specfication perspective, everything above default clock speeds is too high and so is a memory clock speed of DDR3-1600 (as Intel's specifications define DDR3-1333 as the maximum supported memory speed).

Your RAM will not mind if it is not exactly running @DDR3-1600. There is no necessity to aim for an exact BLCK/RAM Frequency match.  Let's say you find a stable spot that will result in a DRAM Speed of DDR3-1578.  So what? 11 MHz less will not have any significant impact on the system performance.

  • Question About Adding Ram from other laptop to T-series Thinkpad

    Hi,
I have a question about adding additional RAM. Right now I have a 4gb ram stick in the t510. I have an acer laptop which I do not need and there is a 4GB ram stick onboard (maybe two 2gb ram sticks) there in that older laptop. Would it be possible to add one stick of 2gb ram (or 4gb i need to check if it is 2 or 1) from the acer to the lenovo thinkpad making the total ram in the thinkpad over 4gb????
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Richk,
Yes, I am using a 64-bit operating system. I am running on windows 7. And as for reported incompatibilities....technically taking a RAM from another laptop and placing it in the laptop should be the same as purchasing a RAM card from ebay or something and putting into the laptop right?

  • Another question about upgrading RAM on G4 iMac

I know that there are numerous threads on this forum about upgrading RAM and I am sorry to have to open another one but, having read many of them, I am still confused!
I have unopened copies of Leopard and ILife 08 that I am planning to install on my 17-inch 1GHz G4 iMac with 768 MB of RAM (256 MB in the factory slot and 512 MB in the user accessible slot). I know that this model does not support all the functions of these programs but I am currently running Panther and the very first iLife so I think it's time for an upgrade!
Apple states that this model supports up to 1GB RAM so I have been thinking that in order to get the best out of the new software I should upgrade to 1GB RAM. My questions are:
    1. Do I need to upgrade or is the existing RAM of 768 MB likely to be sufficient?
    2. If I upgrade, how easy is it to add RAM to the factory slot? I have searched but can find no instructions on this here or on the Apple website which implies that this is not recommended.
    3. Several threads on this forum seem to suggest that, in order to avoid having to mess with the factory slot, it is possible to put 1GB RAM in the user accessible slot and leave the factory slot well alone, resulting in total RAM greater than the maximum recommended by Apple. Is this correct or have I misunderstood?
    Thanks in advance.

    1. Do I need to upgrade or is the existing RAM of 768 MB likely to be sufficient?
That will probably be sufficient. You could always install and run both Leopard and iLife '08 and see if you feel that they are working OK before buying any RAM.
    2. If I upgrade, how easy is it to add RAM to the factory slot? I have searched but can find no instructions on this here or on the Apple website which implies that this is not recommended.
Apple does not post the directions because this is not considered something that a user can do by themselves.
You can see the process at www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/iMacg4/imacg4takeapart.html
    3. Is this correct or have I misunderstood?
That is correct. You could replace the 512 MB in the user accessible slot with 1 GB to provide a total RAM of 1.256 GB.

  • KDE4 + wallpaper slideshow: few questions about performance / tuning.

    Hello,
I am using KDE 4.4 from pacman and set my desktop activity to slideshow. I would like to customize few things and thus - I have few questions:
    1) Is it possible to change / disable transition effect when changing wallpapers? All my desktop is choppy and not responsive while the wallpaper changes and I am wondering if there is a way to repair this? (all images used as walls are at max 3MB big, usually something about 1MB. I have 7200 RPM disk, 2GB of ram and rather fast graphics card with newest Nvidia drivers, so I don't know what is the cause of slowdown...)
    2) How can I programatically progress wallpaper to next image (not with the right click / Next Wallpaper image)?
    3) Is there a way to disable the wallpaper change while there is a fullscreen application running? I am asking this, because when I watch HD movies and the wall changes, movie playback is really choppy... (I think that answer to the first question will also help me in this case).
I would be glad for any sugestions / interest in helping me;)
    Best regards,
    Mike.

    Hello
1/ There's no way I know to remove the transition. Using the "raster" graphics engine helps a lot on performance : kill plasma-desktop and launch  `plasma-desktop -graphicssystem raster`
    2/ There's a plasma applet for this :
    http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Ne … tent=94251
    http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?O … twallpaper
Maybe you can adapt it to your needs / find out how it works.

  • Specific questions about a RAM upgrade to 4GB on my MBP

I have a MBP model MA895LL/A. Currently populated with the original memory (2GB)
Recent clean install of Snow Leopard, with all current updates.
    Specific questions:
What memory does Apple use in their laptops? Does it really matter if you get the same manufacturer for complete compatibility?
Do timings matter? Will faster timing improve performance slightly, or is it a waste of money to go for the faster stuff on my specific model (Intel Core 2 Duo T7500)
Best to populate with 2 sticks X 2?
Finally, how about manufacturers? Anyone have any positive experiences with specific manufacturers, or, horror stories they can share?
I guess I just want to buy the best memory for my MBP. I build my own PCs, but I'm not sure if the Mac is a little more picky, RAM wise. Cost isn't really a factor. I'm willing to spend a little more, and buy the right stuff, and only do it once, without the hassle of sending it back, etc.
Any advice would be great. I know its possible this question has been answered many times before. I guess I don't know where to look...

Uh, yes, this is asked just about every day, like here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2154109&tstart=0
Using the "Search Category" box in the upper right works.
To answer your questions, since you likely have the 2 slots filled with 1GB DIMMs, you need to get a pair of 2GB to max the RAM. I guess you could use 1 OEM stick and one 2GB stick for 3GB total, but I would just go for 4GB. If you are under warranty, save the original RAM, as Apple seems to dislike seeing any 3rd party RAM no matter what. Put the OEM RAM back in if you need warranty work.
I've seen several brands OEM, a lot of Hynix and Samsung, but it is probably all well tested to Apple spec. Otherwise, brands mean nothing, but see the above linked thread. I prefer to go with the exact spec'd RAM myself. I believe "faster" RAM does not run any faster. Vendors mentioned in the linked thread all have selector aids to find the exact RAM for your model.

  • LOB question about performance, fragmentation etc.

    Well..
I want to discuss the issues around LOB objects.
If I have an enttity class with n-count fields and then a lob as the n+1th field, does this affect performance in any way ? E.g. if performance is random access for an object without a lob, does the performance get linear or something when the lob is introduced?
    Another one:
If the latter is true: is it an option for me to use an @OneToOne mapping to compensate ?
What about fragmentation ? How can a database or whoever compensate for fragmentation, in the case the lob is the n+1th field ? Or just in general: How the fragmentation issues are handled?
(Im just thinking that lobs introduce fragmentation and brings performance down...)

This will be san=me if you are considering the Local interfaces.
For remote interface(like accessing EJB from Servlets resides in diffferent Apps Server) use the DTO(data Transfer Object) patterns.

  • Interview Question about performance

    Could somebody answer this.
You get a call from database user complaining the database is very slow. Network issue is ruled out and you can't access any GUI tools like OEM, TOAD and Spot Light. What v$ views and columns would you see to if there is any issue with the db.
    thanks in advance.

Questions like this one can go many directions. Since it is only one user complaining, I might start with v$session, v$process, and v$sql to get the sql text she is executing and test it for performance as a stand-alone query. I might also watch v$session_wait to see if I can see any sign of active waits for various sessions. Of course, if the user is doing a DML, then I might look at v$lock to see if any uncommitted transactions are blocking the user.
That is just a start. There are many places to look and many possible causes of slowdown.
Of course, the usual first questions is 'What has changed?'

  • Should I get the iPod Touch? (Also a question about the screen issue)

    Hi,
I recently purchased the 8GB iPod Nano, and now i'm considering to add a $100 and get the iPod Touch 8GB. Would you guys recommend it?
Another question I had was that I heard about the iPod Touch having some Screen Issues, and read somewhere that if the Box has a picture of Macy Gray then its Bad. But I personally think the Macy Gray image is for the 8GB, and the other artist is for the 16GB.
Is there a 100% definite way for me to find out if it has a good screen or not?
    Thanks in Advance!
    Saeid.

Ok, I recommend the iPod Touch. 8GB is fine, and totally worth the $$.
The screen issue has been fixed by a firmware update, so as long as you update to the latest firmware, you should be in the clear.
I have a 16GB macy Gray and it is working perfectly so far (1 week of ownership)
However, you mentioned using your iPod in the rain. If you do so, the Touch is not for you! I would not want to get water even near it, because the technology could be very very sensitive to water. It was raining here the other day (in Los Angeles) and I was so scared to use the touch that I took my 8GB 3gen Nano with me instead. And I was still scared to use that.
You will have to take the touch out and look at it if you are going to operate it properly.
    The good news:
you can make playlists on the go! That means you can, while it is still dry, set a nice playlist without connecting to your computer. But, if the volume needs to be adjusted, there is a shortcut that would take just a bit of memorization and careful skill. In your pocket, you can double tap the home button, and then the volume, pause and track forward/backward "buttons" pop up. If you can memorize their position and hit them right, the Touch can be operated in your pocket. But make sure your hands are dry!
So it's up to you. I think quality wise, the Touch has had most of its bugs worked out. The only things that will come in the future are additional features.
Good luck and I hope you get it.

If you're having performance issues then start a new topic regarding that.
There is a low FPS in the game "Tomb Raider" (less than 22). Could this be due to damage to the board or the old bios (version 1.7)?

Not if everything else works fine...
Sounds like drivers possibly need an update.

  • Question about performance (entities & data object)

    Hello:
I know that this can be, maybe, a silly question, but I've got the doubt
I get a local reference to a entity ( myEntityLocal ) and I'm going to get many values from it.
    For example
    myEntityLocal.getId();
    myEntityLocal getName();
    myEntityLocal.getAddr();
    etc etc
    My question is
Would be better, in performance terms, to fill all fields into a data object myEntityData ) and retrieve them from it ?
    I mean
myEntityData = myEntityLocal.getData() // where getData() calls getter methods on myEntityLocal
    myEntityData.getId();
    myEntityData.getName();
    myEntityData.getAddr();
I think the result is the same because is a local reference, but I've got that doubt
    Thanks and regards

  • Question about debugger is issuing classesForSignature

    Hello everybody.
I'm working on a project to implement a dynamically typed language on the JVM using the JSR-292 invokeDynamic infrastructure. Some other members of the team have complained about long pauses during startup when running with the Eclipse Juno debugger, and I've been able to reproduce these in both Juno and Luna.
The problem seems to be that the debugger is making a jdwp classesForSignature request for each class that has been unloaded, and each request requires the jdwp library to iterate over every single loaded class.
Since the Java 8 implementation of invokeDynamic & method handles generates a large number of small anonymous classes (which can be GCed if no longer referenced), and we are also quite careful to ensure our own temporary class files can also be GCed away this produces a lot (several thousand) classesForSignature calls, each of which has to iterate over tens of thousands of classes.
Does anybody know why the debugger is issuing classesForSignature requests for unloaded classes, and if there is some way to stop it?
    Thank's a lot!

It is possible in the debugger tool
Once you get the debugger tool, chose from menu:

  • Question about sleep resume issue

Hi friends! I have the following question: When I resume my T430 Thinkpad from sleep and is not plugged in instead of bringing back the screen of my last session the computer starts booting. This cause lots of problems especially if I have any unsaved work. I didn't have this problem in the past (after I was pressing the green button my computer was always starting at the session that I left it before I chose SLEEP). I usually don't have this problem if the computer is plugged in. I also noticed that this happens only if the remaining battery time is 2 hours or less (or maybe this is just a coincidence). Has anyone else experienced the same problem? Is there a setting that I can change? Thank you!

Yes. I have this problem with my T430, but only when I have both the main battery and also the battery "slice" installed. What happens is that after the first battery is run down (the "slice" is run down first), the T430 switches to the other battery (the main battery). If I then suspend the computer, it appears that it tries to maintain the memory during sleep mode using the depleted battery which, of course, results in the same thing as removing the battery while in sleep.
I've tried to figure out how to contact Lenovo but, despite having an extended support contract, I have been unable to do so. I'm hoping someone here can help or can direct me to where I can find out how to contact Lenovo about what is obviously a flaw in their design.
