A question about VPN Service

A friend has asked for help setting up a Mac Mini Server he just bought for his office. He knows very little about OS X/OS X Server and thought I could help. Unfortunately, while I am familiar with OS X, I know almost nothing about OS X Server.
All he wants OS X Server to do is file sharing and VPN. My question about VPN is this, are there any other services on OS X Server that need to be configured and running for VPN to work?
I understand the router needs to pass VPN traffic but other than that, do I just need to set up the VPN service on the server or do other things like the OS X Server DNS Service have to be up and running as well.
Thanks for your time.

You will also need to have Open Directory running for user authentication.

    Hello,
    I am working with vpn setups for the first time, so I have some questions I would really appriciate some help with. I would like to be able to connect to a computer on a home network through a linksys E2500 router. I have found alot of documentation on connecting to an external vpn from a computer on the lan side of the router, but nothing on connecting from the outside in. The router does have a static ip address with my internet provider, so I can contact the router from the outside. But makeing the connection to the computer on the other side of the router is where I am missing something or I dont realize that it is not possible. On the lan side I am using DHCP to assign the address to the computer I want to connect to. Perhaps I need to make it have a static address also? I realize that when I configure the connection from the outside that I need to direct the connection to the remote computer in some way, unless vpn connections are fully passed through the router and the connection issue I am haveing is with the "inside" computer.

  • Questions about web services

    Hi! Experts:
    I am at the Web Servivces Navigator.
    I have a basic question about it:
    We are using MI7.1 which has NO Java stack. Therefore we do NOT have the Web Services Navigator.
    How do we use the Web Services for MI7.1?
    Thanks!

    Hi!
    1) SICF lists the BSP services; Web Services are requests between java application to client application.
        Are you sure them are the same thing?
    2) When I compare the services between web service navigator and SICF, I do not see there is any
       relationship.  For example, if I search "AdapterMessageMonitoring" in SICF, I cannot find it.
    I think SICF and  web service navigator  are listing totally different services.
    Therefore my question is that since MI7.1 has NO Java stack (hence NO web service navigator ), how
    are web services handled in MI7.1?
    Thanks!

  • Questions about web services and BPEL in ALBPM

    Hi all,
    We are currently evaluating various BPM products in order to decide which one to use. Currently I am evaluating ALBPM Studio 5.7 and I am running my processes on the embedded engine provided with the studio. I have some questions:
    1. We want to be able to use complex types for the web services that are generated for processes. Will this limitation be solved any time in the future?
    2. We want to be able to use the generated web services directly (that is, without calling the startSession method first). Is that possible?
    3. I could not find extensive documentation about developing BPEL processes. There is only one small chapter in the developer documentation about BPEL processes. Is there any more documentation or sample about how BPEL is used in ALBPM?
    4. I have developed a very simple BPEL process, but when I try to deploy it, I get the error "Activity BPEL receive does not have any incoming transitions". How can I resolve this issue? I guess it may be a problem about my PartnerLink definition.
    5. When I try to catalog a wsdl which imports another wsdl (and when the imported wsdl also imports some xsds from another namespace), I get an error which says that a web service xxx with namespace yyy is not found, but actually the thing named xxx is not a web service but a soap fault. What could be the problem?
    6. Is it possible to write a BP method in PBL for a BPEL activity?
    Thanks in advance and best regards..

    Hi experts,
    I have created a Web service about Function Module 'BAPI_EXCHANGERATE_GETDETAIL'.Now I plan to use Transaction code 'WSADMIN' to create a WSDL.But the display result of IE tell me my host could not be resolved by DNS.I don't know how to solve this question, and which happened based on this question.Is there any experienced experts tell me the solution?

    Hi,
    In your system folder:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc there is a file hosts;
    Add your server I address and servername in it.
    like:
    193.10.100.70     myserver.com     MYSERVER
    Hope this will resolve the problem. If you do not have authorisation for the same, your network admin will help.

  • Question about VPN with Server 2012

    I am a programmer, but I know enough about network and server configs to be slightly dangerous when it comes to configurations.
    My task today was to try to setup VPN access at our office. We have a 2012R2 standard server that was not doing anything (not even on), so I decided it would be the perfect machine for the job.
    To make this as short as possible, we are a real small office, 3 guys. We have a high end (although consumer grade) router that is not a VPN end point, but does support VPN tunneling through its firewall. Router is DHCP server, however most workstations
    and servers in the office are setup with statics.
    I got everything to work (pats self on back) to allow me to create a new VPN connection from an outside Windows client machine, and everything worked as I wanted it to, except for machine name resolution. I understand this is due to limitations in NetBIOS
    and how that all works. I found an article about setting up a WINS server, and once I did that, it resolved my issue and I was able to connect to shares or RDP to machines by name instead of by local IP address.
    So I came here to ask this:
    1) The WINS server method required me to manually add each machine/IP I wanted to register. I am not sure why this is, but I am thinking it has to do with the server not acting as the DHCP/DNS server (or maybe this is just how WINS works?). This isn't a
    HUGE deal, but it would be nice if I didn't have to manually manage this list. If Windows clients on the local network here can broadcast and see all available network machines, why can't the WINS server make the same network crawl automatically?
    2) In reading about the WINS server, most people said it was a relic and one should use DNS instead. I am looking for more information on this, to see if this is something I should consider or worry about.
    3) Would I make my life easier if I made the 2012 server both DHCP and DNS server and removed those tasks from the router?
    A side note if it matters, we are NOT on a domain here, just a loose set of workgroup machines. We find that setting up a whole DC and adding all these machines and accounts to a domain is counter productive for us, because we are such a small shop here,
    with nothing to restrict from each other, and we find that adding a domain into the picture complicates things more than it simplifies things. Of course unless someone can make a case why we should just move to being on a DC.

    Hi,
    There have the Browser Elections procedure when you use WINS service, but the WINS service in domain environment and workgroup environment have the different Browser Election.
    By default, all domain controllers in a domain are browser servers.
    You can refer the following KB to understand the procedure:
    Browser Elections
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc959896.aspx
    How Computer Browser Service Works
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc737661(v=ws.10).aspx
    Description of the Microsoft Computer Browser Service
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/188001
    If you install a WINS server the WINS server will handles name registration requests from WINS clients, register their names and IP addresses, and responds to NetBIOS name
    queries submitted by clients, returning the IP address of a queried name if it is listed in the server database.
    WINS provides the following benefits for administering your TCP/IP-based network:
    A dynamic name-to-address database that maintains support for computer name registration and resolution.
    Centralized management of the name-to-address database, alleviating the need for managing Lmhosts files.
    Reduction of NetBIOS-based broadcast traffic on subnets, by permitting clients to query WINS servers to directly locate remote systems.
    Support for earlier Microsoft® Windows® and NetBIOS-based clients on your network, permitting these types of clients to browse lists for remote Windows domains without requiring
    a local domain controller to be present on each subnet.
    Support for DNS-based clients by enabling those clients to locate NetBIOS resources when WINS lookup integration is implemented.

  • Question about the Service Registry

    Hi Folks,
    I am currently writing a report on the need for our company's SAP interfaces to be moved from the Visual Studio 2003/SAP .NET Connector 1.0 platform to one of the two more up-to-date technologies: ESOA or SAP .NET Connector 3.0.
    My question is regarding the SAP Services Registry. I understand that a web service is created in Visual Studio, deployed to a local web server, and then to the RS. Where should the RS reside? We are a global company and our interface is used in about 40 sites - will there be one RS for all of these sites?
    Sorry, if this is very naive. I'm just beginning to get to grips with this topic.
    Many thanks,
    David

    Hi David,
    The most important thing here is that the Service Registry is only relevant during design-time, not at runtime. The webservice itself won't be deployed to the SR, the webservice WSDL (along with additional information on usage & security restrictions) will be published in the SR. The SR is like a listing of your available Provider Webservices, with controlled access.
    You'll need to elaborate a bit more on the 40 sites statement, i.e. will they be developing their own consumer service for your one service? If they are, they will only need to access the SR initially to get the WSDL during development, thereafter at runtime, they will call the runtime endpoint defined by you & not the SR.
    They will only visit the SR again if the service contract changes from your side and you have a new WSDL. Even then, they can work with an offline WSDL that you provide them so SR connectivity in not mandatory.

  • Interesting phenomenon -- cellphone iChatAV! -- and a question about VPN...

    Maybe a month or so, when I first bought my iSight, I was quite pleased to find that it worked "right out of the box" with my 2001 Quicksilver G4/867 and ActionTec GT701WG DSL modem. I successfully connected to the test sites, to ralphjohnsr, nqmacuser, and rjinwi. Then I got one for work. Oddly enough, I could connect to all the aforementioned sites from work, but could never connect to/from work from/to home (a 2002 Quicksilver G4/800).
    Then came the 10.4.7 ppc combo update. All was ok on the home front, but work was a disaster. Couldn't connect to anyone, no test sites, no nuthin'.
    After battling the issue since updating in vain, today, for grins and chuckles, I disconnected my work computer from its wired ethernet connection, plugged in my cell phone to a USB port (I've got a 1XRTT cellphone modem script for my Mot T730C) and made a AVchat over PPP dial up via 1XRTT to home! I was really quite surprised that it even worked because dslreports/stest reported my cellphone uplink at a big whoppin' 39kbps max -- usually less -- but it worked multiple times. Kinda absolved my home and work computers and my home DSL modem (and all the current computer and DSL modem firewall port settings) of any guilt....
    That leaves work's firewall as the likely culprit. Work's firewall is pretty tight, we need to use VPN to get in from the outside, and so I'm now thinking that something in the SIP or AV port handover is not playing nice with work's firewall, especially since 10.4.7 since I can't connect to anything at all anymore from work. Problem is, it doesn't seem to want to play nice with VPN, either, whether initiating the call from the outside or the inside, after outside has established a VPN tunnel.
    As an aside, I did some tcpdumps on all of ichat's ports on both ends of the (cellphone) circuit today along with an errorLogLevel7 -- I plan to consolidate all that into a chronologically arranged excel spreadsheet, since the AV connection was successful, then do the tcpdump game on a failed work ethernet connection to see if a comparison of port logs plus ichat log leads to any clues. (Ralph, if interested when I complete the "successsful call" spreadsheet, you are more than welcome to have a copy to perhaps post on your excellent website -- it would be way too big to post here -- if interested, lemme know.)
    Anyways, getting back on track, I'm thinking that work's firewall is my problem, but it seems to me that I should be able to iChatAV over VPN -- I can iChatAV between computers that are both inside work's firewall. So I'm wondering, anybody out there have any experience with using iChatAV through a VPN? I'm using VPN Tracker on my home Mac. Work's VPN gateway requires Checkpoint VPN-1 certificates at both ends.

    HI J.v.,
    The most likely problem is that your company may be using their internet connection for their phone service as well.
    This would also use SIP on port 5060 as ichat does.
    Even if they do not use the phones/internet in this way the ISP might offer it and be blocking port to get people to pay for the service.

  • Questions about Customer Service and Prepaid Phones

    Yes, I have had Straight Talk for over two years. The phone service its self was wonderful. I only came across three places within a 50 mile radios of not being able to get reception. After asking around I found out that Straight Talks service is through Verizon. Everyone I talk to says the Verizon Tower reception was the best. I have been waiting a total of 22 days for Straight Talk to send my replacement for my broken phone. I have had it and I am going to sell the phone on Ebay when I receive it. My service with Straight Talk ends in four days and I am really considering Verizon.. Wanting to do this over the weekend. I know if I purchase a phone from Verizon directly it will be shipped overnight.
    The main thing I want to know is if Verizon has a Customer Call Center in the United States? Where I can speak to someone that speaks "Fluent" English and actually cares if I get good service or not.
    I am older and I like basics with no change. So, these are the features I want on my new phone.
    A phone with a 3 megapix are larger camera with video.
    A phone with a touchscreen and a query keyboard.
    I want a speak to text feature. The last phone had it but I have been told that a app can be put on a phone to do it if it doesn't have it..
    I haven't never had any apps downloaded on my phone but still want options for some.
    A phone that has GPS.
    These are the main features I have got to have. Nothing else matters. Can anybody help a elderly old man find a basic phone with these features?
    I would greatly appreciate any input from Verizon Users about Verizon's Customer Service Department and any suggestions for a good phone under $50. Of course I am not looking for necessarily a new phone with a lot of extras. Thanks and have a "Wonderful and Blessed Day". Chris

    The docs haven't been moved over to the 8.1 docsite, but the 7.0 docs
    for campaigns are still pretty much valid in 8.1. Look at:
    http://e-docs.bea.com/wlp/docs70/dev/cmpaign.htm#998197
    for more information.
    Basic answers:
    1. You can't from a campaign. It will always batch emails in the database.
    2. Use the bea/weblogic81/portal/bin/mainmanager.bat|sh script, which
    uses the com.bea.p13n.mail.MailManager command-line java class (JavaDoc
    at http://e-docs.bea.com/wlp/docs81/javadoc/index.html). This can be
    invoked from cron or at for regular email delivery. Also, the emails are
    deposited in the MAIL_* tables
    (http://e-docs.bea.com/wlp/docs81/db/4Schemas.html#1064602), so you
    could implement a delivery system from that as well.
    3. There are no parameters since the email delivery is invoked from a
    command-line process.

  • Basic question about Web Services

    First I wan't to say that i've searched the net for info, and all I could find was some advanced code snipets. However, I would like to start from the begining.
    I'm trying to develop a web service which takes XML as input parameter, an returns some other XML.
    I developed a WS like that
    import org.w3c.dom.Element
    public static Element returnElement(Element xml)
    { return xml }Now here's the problem:
    I would like to be able to call this WS from other programming languages, like Delphi, C++...
    To try and make something like that, I converted xml to String and pass it to a WS. However, this string is too big (about 3200 chars) for HTTP GET to handle.
    How can I do that?? Which classes to use? How to represent data in XML form that could be read in Java and other programming languages?
    Please, at least, post a link, I just need some basic pointers.
    Code examples would be much apreciated.
    Thanks a lot in advance,
    Good day,
    Simon

    Hi,
    Thanks for your reply. There is a directory on the web logic server's box where the required classes exist. How can I add those to the CLASSPATH? How can I do it from Web Logic Admin Console?

  • Questions about Windows services on a OS X 10.3 server

    Hi! I'm wanting to configure an OS X 10.3 server to participate in a Windows workgroup so I can share a directory on the server that the Windows machine can use as a backup drive, of sorts. I've got only ONE Windows box in an all-Mac network. The ultimate goal is to provide an automated backup solution for the Windows machine. I would like the Windows user to copy their files to the server so the scheduled Backup running on the server will backup their files, along with the rest of the files that are backed up to iDisk.
    So, I'm thinking I can use the Windows service on the OS X server to provide the backup directory/folder the Windows machine will map to a local windows drive, making it easy to copy files to the target backup area.
    I've got AFP, OpenDirectory (I think), and Windows service as the only services running on the OS X server. I've got the Windows service setup as a standalone server with the correct workgroup name and the Windows machine is setup with the same workgroup as the server. The Windows machine is running Windows XP.
    I've got the Windows service setup to act as the workgroup browse master and I do NOT have WINS enabled.
    Now for my questions:
    When I view the workgroup on the server in the "Network" area of Finder, I see nothing. When I view the workgroup on the Windows machine, I only see the Windows machine. On the server, I turned on the Windows service log and noticed only SMBD was starting, not NMBD. I presume this is why the server can't "see" the Windows machine and vice-versa, correct?
    I've read the following threads:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2358362&#2358362
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4132419&#4132419
    and it looks like I need to create an account for the Windows user on the OS X server and I'm thinking I need to use the "Workgroup Manager" for that, right?
    There are no passwords for the Windows accounts that would be connecting to the same backup area on the server. Will I be able to create accounts without passwords on the server for these users or will I be required to specify a password for when the Windows machine connects to the server?
    This is my first time configuring an OS X server like this so please excuse my elementary questions.
    Thanks!
    Peace...

    You need to make sure the shortname in workgroup manager is the same as the logon name when you create the drive on the PC.
    Personally i'd do it all over IP. On the PC goto Run, and type \\ip address of server\sharename. It should then ask for a UN/PW, this is what you've entered into workgroup manager, and should be the shortname.
    That should then give you the drive.
    To map it so its always there when they log-in, goto my computer and map network drive, making sure you click the link that says 'use a different account to connect'

    hi experts,
    I develop a web service based on abap FM. When the 3party programs call it, user need to input the username/password.
    can I config sth for the web service, and user don't need the input user/pass?
    Thanks

    Hi Michael,
    I understand you are worried about security (i.e.people accessing the Service anonymously is something you want to avoid).  Also, you don't want the people to have to manually authenticate themselves (i.e. enter a User ID and Password) to execute the Service.   In this case, you need to use a more sophisticated authentication technique like X.509 SSL Client Certificate or SAP Single Sign On Ticket.  This is a complex subject and not suitable for discussion here.  Here are links to topics that could get you started.

  • Question about web service and timeouts

    I have a form with a button script that invokes a synchronous soap web service request to an address validation service. It works nicely in testing but I am a bit concerned at what might happen when we go live with respect to the form hanging if the soap server is unavailable or the user is offline.
    From some simple tests in production, where the web service is available yet:
         - in Windows, it times out in Adobe Reader 10.1.1 within about 15 seconds; and
         - In the Mac, with Adobe Reader 10.1.3 it takes around 4 1/2 minutes.
    The latter is not good, as it hangs Reader the entire time.
    Is there some way I can set a timeout in the soap request. Would it be worth considering an async call? If I changed it to async, could I let the user continue to fill the form and then setFocus with an async flag?

    Hi,
    I'm almost there. I dont think that you can do exception handling in FormCalc. How do I trap the error. So far I have
    if (HasValue(Get("http://despaiqo001.development.local:4001/crossdomain.xml")) == 0) then
         $xfa.host.messageBox("not available")
    else
        $xfa.host.messageBox("got it")
    endif
    but when I change the URL so it cant access it, I get a form calc exception. Any samples of how I can script it?

  • Question about web service client

    Hi,
    I am creating the a client to call non wls web serveice.
    First I need to create the client jar using clientgen. My question is when i create the client jar I need the wsdl file. where is the correct place to store the wsdl file? Also I have development and production wsdl file with the different service location. Do I have to store both of the wsdl files? It's a trouble to remember to build the different client jar for development and production (using different wsdl), is there anyway that I can build the client jar once and somehow dynamically configure to use different wsdl (ie service location) in different environment? Thanks

    Hi Holy,
    If you know the WSDL hasn't changed since you used it when running the clientgen Ant task, you can just use the one that is inside the JAR that clientgen produces. To do this, you just need to not specify an argument to the XXX_Impl constructor. For instance:
    AttachmentPartsService_Impl service = new AttachmentPartsService_Impl();
    This has some performance benefits, because it reduces the total number of network calls, the client-side Web Services stack makes. If you specify the URL for the WSDL to the constructor (as recommended by someone else here), the client-side Web Services stack will issue an HTTP GET to get it. Now if the WSDL that is returned uses types that are different than the ones the clientgen Ant task generated classes for (i.e. the ones in the JAR generated by the clientgen Ant task), you are in trouble because the client-side Web Services doesn't generate serialization/deserialization classes (i.e. the ones in the JAR generated by the clientgen Ant task) "on-the-fly".
    The service endpoint for a Web Service call can (and should) be set programmatically, from a properties or configuration file. This will look something like this in the code:
    import java.util.Properties;
    import javax.xml.rpc.Stub;
    private static Properties loadProperties(String fileName) throws IOException
    if (fileName == null || fileName.length() == 0) return null;
    Properties props = new Properties();
    FileInputStream fis = null;
    try
    fis = new FileInputStream(fileName);
    props.load(fis);
    finally
    if (fis != null) try { fis.close(); } catch (Exception ignore){}
    return props;
    public static void main() throws Exception
    Properties props = loadProperties("MyProperties.properties");
    Client client = new Client(props);
    public Client(Properties properties)
    AttachmentPartsService_Impl service = new AttachmentPartsService_Impl();
    AttachmentPartsServiceSoap port = service.getAttachmentPartsServiceSoap();
    if (schemeHostPort == null) schemeHostPort = "http://localhost:7001";
    ((AttachmentPartsServiceSoap_Stub)port)._setProperty(
    Stub.ENDPOINT_ADDRESS_PROPERTY,
    properties.getProperty("production.AttachmentPartsService.serviceEndpointURL"));
    This way, you can have a different properties file for each environment you propagate the web service to, as opposed to saving copies of WSDL files just to have the "correct" service endpoint address. It also has the additional benefit of letting you store the service endpoint URLs for more than just one web service.

  • Question about Windows Services

    I've been trying to cut corners on an XP machine. Since it doesn't need network connectivity, I've disabled networking related services. However, I was wondering if System-level (Start type 0x1) services are safe to disable as well (located under SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services).
    Specifically, IPSEC, NETBIOS, Tcpip, and TermDD (these are the exact key names).
    I have disabled these services, and didn't have any issues booting. But I haven't done anything beyond that (such as long-term affects/unintended side effects).

    to be honest, I've not met the first program that ran on XP but not on 7, with needed compatibility configurations. For 16 bit applications you might need to install and run the 32 bit version of the OS (and start looking for replacement software!).
    It's true running unneeded stuff is not optimal, but I would like to return your question; why disable functionality if unsure what it does or what the impact might be? If something does not work as expected in a few months, will you be happy to find out
    it's due some obscure dependency on one of those services?
