A question from UK WiFi network BT/FON

The BT/Fon advertises this Free WiFi net work created through a network they claim freely available throughout world.
The Fon site claims the following: +As a member of the Fon community, you agree to share a little bit of your WiFi at home, and get free roaming at Fon Spots worldwide in return. Sharing WiFi with Fon is safe and secure , and you wont even notice when others are connected because Fon only uses a tiny portion of your bandwidth.+
Has anybody with experience if the iPad works seamlessly in those Free WiFi net works?
Regards

BTFon uses the Home Hub 2 which has two built in WiFi transmitters .
One is your own use with WPA security the second is the Fon bit.It has a WEP security code.
Your internal own network ALWAYS has bandwidth priority and depending on your adsl input and distance from a BT exchange/Green box will give you something between 2mb and advertised maximum of 20MB ( Don't expect this to be achieved via copper local loop- Tops are 12-15mb).
The BT fon service available to home broadband subscribers and Orange Mobile gives you a log in user name and password, and is just an extension of the BT Openzone hotspot service.
BT can identify all subscribers accordingly and it is a secure link (In so far as WEP can be considered secure)
The BTfon user and the Home Hub 2 subscriber can NOT see each other at any time as the sub net masks differ.
You Have NO access to modify the BTFon bit as it is firmware locked.
However you rarely get much more than half to three quarters of a mb connection because you don't know how far you are from the base station and as said above the user has priority.
I have connected to a few BTFon services with both my iPhone and iPad in several locations around London but you usually get better speed over 3G !

  • Z10 keeps disconnecting from home wifi network

I just switched from a Samsung Galaxy to a BlackBerry Z10 a couple of days ago and I am having trouble with my home wifi. The Galaxy never had issues with it and stayed on constantly but the Z10 connects for a few minutes and then disconnects again and won't re-connect unless I reboot the router. I made sure I had the latest firmware on the router and updated the Z10 software as well. Apparently there is some setting on my wifi that was ok for the Galaxy but not ok for the Z10 and I hope someone can help me figure it out. Nothing else is using the wifi and the signal strength is very good.
    What happens:
The phone connects successfully to the wifi. I open the browser and go through a few pages and then suddenly a page won't load at all. Sometimes the phone says it is still connected to the wifi and sometimes it sends me a message saying that the network has limited access to some websites. Sometimes it will instead switch to 4G. It doesn't only happen when I use the browser. Sometimes I am not using anything on it at all but just look at it and see it has switched to 4G.
I go into the settings and I see that it says my wifi network is disabled. I enable it again and confirm all the settings are fine and try to connect. Sometimes it goes through three attempts and then gives up. Sometimes it only tries once and gives me a message that it is unable to authenticate against the network and that I should verify network security settings and try again. No matter how many times I try, it does not connect until I log in to my router and reboot that. Then it connects immediately without my having to do anything.
So I am pretty sure this means a problem with my router settings.
I am using WPA/WPA2 - Personal security and confirmed that setting and the password on the Z10 are correct.
On the Z10, "Auto Obtain IP" is on.
I always have trouble with network stuff and it means little to me so, if anyone knows what is going on, please don't give me technical jargon! If you need more info, I will provide.
Thanks! I don't want to have to take it back but if it won't work for me, I might have to get another Samsung instead.

An update, in case anyone else is experiencing anything similar ...
After troubleshooting with various technicians at various companies, it appears the problem was actually a faulty router. I don't understand why my Samsung had no issues with it (or my laptop) but when I replaced it with another router I had kicking around, the BlackBerry had no problem connecting and it has been about three hours so far without disconnecting at all.
I suppose I'll come back here if the problem recurs but, in the meantime it appears to be just one of those weird things. So I guess the moral is to try everything, even if you don't think it could possibly be the cause, because you just never know.

  • I'm experiencing wifi issues with my new iphone 5 not being able to connect to, or when connected not dowloading from my wifi network at home using ios 6.0.2

i purchased a new d-link dir-655 wireless n extreme router to strengthen my signal at home and cannot connect from the opposite end of the house from where the router is.  When I'm near the router i can connect and download with no problem.  When I move 10-20 ft from the router I can connect, but not download.  More than that, I can't connect.  What fristrates me is my old iphone 3gs is able to connect and download perfectly from anywhere in the house!!??  Do i need to replace the iphone?

I have the same problem, it's better trade my iPhone, or the apple it's gonna fix at the next upgrade? Please, someone help me, I try everything.

  • Using airport time capsule to create an internet connected network from pre existing wifi network

i bought an airport time capsule for college. I bought it to create a network for my dorm room so that I could take the pre existing wifi from the school and make my own mini network that I can hook my other stuff up to. Problem is that I don't have an ethernet hook up in my room so the network would have to be created from a wifi network rather that a ethernet hook up. Is this still possible? Alternate suggestions? I am afraid of either the college network blocking users from communication with other devices via the wifi, or the fact that my printer would be on a huge network for all to screw with.

    Is this still possible?
NO, it won't work. Apple only works with apple.
    Alternate suggestions?
I am sure your college has rules about not running your own wifi networks.. but anyway.. that is up to you.. the Apple TC cannot turn off 2.4ghz which would be handy.. so the only way to do this following the rules is ethernet. You can run a full network standalone on ethernet. And still use wireless for internet.
If you want to use wireless standalone this is also possible but you need to connect a second wifi USB dongle your Mac so you can have two networks at once.. You can use an express to connect to the college wireless and bridge that to the TC by ethernet.. then use the TC to create your own network.. since you cannot turn off 2.4ghz I guess how long the College IT people take to track you down should be hours. If you could just use 5ghz it would probably be ok.

  • Leopard can't tell an actual wifi network from a "device" network???

i'm at a university and connect to the network "UniversityNet" when i'm on campus. subsequently, it has been added to my list of preferred networks.
i just got home now, and as usual there are lamer computers trying to pass off as actual wifi networks (i'm assuming to try to connect to your computer and snoop around, right?). anyways, once i turned on my wireless on my powerbook, it automatically connected to a device's "UniversityNet" wifi connection.
i don't think this could've done anything when i connected, right? i don't have sharing or anything like that enabled.
and finally, to the point: why can't leopard differentiate from actual wifi networks and those that are under "devices" that try to have the same SSID name??? tiger didn't do this before with these lame joker computers, it was able to remember the real "UniversityNet" wifi networks and not automatically connect to a network just because it had a "UniversityNet" name (aka another computer who had this name). this would be quite bothersome if there were a lot of "linksys" networks in the area, i'd imagine (number 1 network name!)
    anybody have any ideas???

Temporarily, I suggest that your turn off the wireless security on the Cisco router and then test to see if the AirPort Express will connect that way.
If it will, then you know that it is wireless security settings issue, and you will need try a different security setting on the Cisco. The AirPort Express will connect to a WPA2 Personal network, which is also known as WPA2-PSK-AES.  The Express will also connect to a WPA/WPA2 Personal network, known sometimes as WPA-PSK-TKIP.
If the Express will not connect to the Cisco network with no security, then you know that it will never connect with security enabled.
More troubleshooting will be required.  For example, the Cisco router might be using "wide channels" on the 2.4 GHz band, when Apple does not.

  • How do I check a wifi network on my iphone 4S ?

I was in a Dennys restaurant that boasts a free WI-FI network, but couldnt logon to it.  The iPhone saw the net but would not join it.  No-one else could get onto the network either.  This has happened in other locations too.
My home network is via the Telus phone line. I noticed that on this network, according to Speedtest.net,  the internet speed is not very good, i.e. download 5.96 MB,  Up  0.43 Mb/s,    ping 62ms
Thanks for any ideas on making it easier to join free networks that wont be joined, and speed up access on a slow networks

If others are having problems getting on the network, it's probably a problem on the network, but I think you understand that. If the network is broken and it doesn't belong to you, the only way to 'bypass this' is to disconnect from the WiFi network and use 3G. That or complain to the manager... I doubt that will do you much good. They can barely figure out how to fry eggs, much less do anything with their network.

  • I am trying to connect to my Wifi Network. It is a Galaxy Nexus. I am trying to connect to this Hotspot. I have an iMac that works fine with my network but for some reason with this computer I cannot connect.

So far I have pulled the system configuration file, I have reset safari, I deleted all old passwords from the wifi network in Keychain I restarted both devices. I am at the end here and I cannot get it to work I have an iMac that works fine with my network but for some reason this computer will not connect. It is system wide specifically to my personal hotspot. I can connect fine to any other network (wifi) but just not mine. I have not changed any wifi settings. I have been trying to figure this out. I have a MacBook Pro Late 2006 model running Lion (10.7.5) So any ideas anyone? Please help!

    12. At a WiFi hotspot, you can't get connected.  The most frequent reason is the login screen for the WiFi hotspot is only able to be connected with a single type of browser.  If Safari doesn't work, try Firefox, Chrome, Omniweb, or Opera.

  • Safari Home Page On Secure Wifi Network Login

My employer has a very secure guest network. Sometimes when I log in and connect, my Ipad goes directly to Apple.com. This causes a problem because if I hit the Home key so I can open Safari, my Ipad disconnects from the WiFi network and I get a "not connected" message. How can I set my Ipad to go directly to a web page in Safari after logging in?

King Penguin, thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, the issue is still there. When I open Safari, I don't get the secure login website to get into the wi-fi network. If I click on the network in Settings, sometimes the login page pops up, but my IPad goes directly to Apple.com, and it's not in Safari, so I can't access another website, and if I close Apple.com and open Safari, the wi-fi connection is lost.

  • New iPad 2 won't bring up log on pages when I sign on to hotel wifi networks. Is there anyway to "refresh" Safari so it looks for the log on page?

Have had new iPAD 2 for a month now- about 90% of the time it won't sign on to wifi networks that require a log on page - it simply won't bring the log on pages up and I haven't figured out anyway to make it do so - I have tried rebooting, turning wifi on and off, turning the ipad on and off -
I get a strong signal from the wifi network but can't get on the internet -   makes the ipad virtually worthless to me.  I saw this was a topic of discussion last year with lots of complaints but I can't find any suggestions or solutions.  Is this just a terribly defective product?
    Any suggestions welcome!

For many systems, you need to use a browser to go to some site. The first site the browser tries to go to, it will be interrupted and a log in page appears. For other sites you need to choose the wifi router in the settings and enter the password.

  • WIFI stops working properly when I move between WIFI networks?

    Hi Guys...
This is my first post. I hope you can help because it's driving me crazy!
    Hardware: iPhone 4s running iOS6
I use my iPhone on my home and work wifi networks. Both networks are running well and noone has problems with any other devices conecting at either location.
I noticed recently that wifi started to drop out so badly that I couldn't resolve web pages, use the twitter app or access the app store etc. The phone is indicating a full wifi reception at all times but nothing works! I did a search of the forum and found some threads relating to wifi issues on the 4s on ios6. One of the answers was to reset the network settings on my phone. I did this and reconnected to the work wifi network and everything was fixed! Super fast connection again! Brilliant I thought!
I went home and logged in to my home wifi. It ran ok for about a minute then became totally up responsive just the same as it was at work! I reset the network settings and it fixed it! This happens every time I move from one wifi network to another so I can't have multiple wifi networks stored for some reason?!?
Is anyone else experiencing the same issue? Does anyone know if it can be fixed?
Apple people... Do you know about this issue?
Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated

  • TS1398 Ever since I upgraded to iOS 7, my iPhone is constantly forgetting my wifi network connection.

Lately, my iPhone has been getting dropped from my wifi network and more often than not, when I leave and come back to the office wifi, the phone will have trouble connecting, asking for the password again and again (which it should already know!).
But now it will not connect at all. The wifi is working fine on my mac and the signal strenght is fine. I have gone through all of the steps suggested by Apple support and it still will not connect to the wifi network.
    Any help?

  • Icloud freezing on MAC Yosemite - doesn't work with my wifi network

    Hey everybody,
Since upgrading to Yosemite, I'm having troubles logging into my icloud account on my macbook air - mid 2011, when i log in from preference->icloud and i enter my infos. After a while a message box appears saying that it "can't sign in at this time".
But I noticed one weird thing: I tried to sign in from another wifi network (in a café), and it worked perfectly and everything came back to normal. But when i returned home and connected my MB to my wifi network, icloud freezed another time. Then I returned to the café, and it started to work again normally. But when i came back to test it another time at home, the problem of icloud freezing came back. So I shared some 3G from my iphone and connected my MB to it. And icloud started working fine another time. But when i conneted it to my wifi network, the problem came back.
So I recognized that maybe i'm having some network problems, so i reseted my router (dlink DSL-2640t )and I tried again, but the problem persisted.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

    skrble,
Welcome to the forum.  Sorry to hear about your troubles.
I re-read your message a couple times and it sounds like you are bringing systems home and that the point is that they will not connect to your home router.  You have listed a good number of different ThinkPad models and noted they will not connect to your router while other manufacturers will.
Let me ask, if you take any of these ThinkPads to other locations, are you able to connect view wifi?  If so, then the ThinkPad and wifi are working and we appear to have some setting / incompatibility.  We have had some odd cases where routers needed a firmware update, but I don't want to jump to conclusions.
Can you please let us know if your laptops will work somewhere else first.  If none of the ThinkPads work anywhere, then we have perhaps a different problem.   Lastly, when you are at home, have you tried a wired ethernet connection from the ThinkPad to your router.  If so, are you then able to get network access?   Perhaps we can isolate this a bit.
    Thanks
    Mark

  • I have an airport express that i am using for my wifi network to include iphone 4 ipad2 windows vista laptop and a hp eprint printer.  My internet is coming from my iphone 4 via peronal hotspot.

The problem is i only am able to be on one or the other, at first i was able to be on internet and connected to wifi network thus being able to surf and print how do i need to fix this?

You are asking several different questions. If you need to store your photos, music, and movies on an external volume, you certainly can. Any externally connected hard disk drive will work, connected either directly to your Mac or to your Time Capsule as a shared volume.
You should not rely upon using that as a backup device though. Although you certainly may use it for both purposes, it is a better idea to have dedicated backup devices for a variety of reasons not limited to redundancy. You would not want to simultaneously lose all your pictures as well as your backup. If they are all on the same device, that could happen. Furthermore, a backup cannot back up the volume on which it is running.
As for adding an Extreme or Express, using its LAN port for your iMac, and then enable Internet sharing so you can effectively use the iMac as a "hotspot", you can do that too, but I am unclear on what benefit you believe this arrangement would convey for you.
An Extreme's Guest network is separate from its Main network; that is the reason for having it.

  • Is there a way I can store presentations on a mac to stream to apple tv and control from an iPad without storing presentation on iPad at any time or connecting to the internet; i.e. just through local wifi network?

I am looking at setting up a Local Wifi Network using a Mac and Airport Extreme.
I wish to store presentations on the Mac.
I wish to teach from the presentations through Apple TVs in my classrooms using IPad to control presentation, annotate etc
I don't want to have to upload presentation to iPad from Mac as this will be in server room.
I don't want to access internet so iCloud Drive is out of the question.
    What options do I have?
    Many thanks
    Dave

You would need to find an app that lets you remotely access the Mac (e.g. Logmein). You would need to be aware of how much the network can handle.
