A question mark (?) instead of a icon for imovie

I have tired to use imovie, but my icon in the dock is a question mark. I have hooked up the USB cable and got nothing, like it did not even exist. I bought this computer new a few years ago, and I think I am out of applecare. This is supposed to be simple, but it is not working out that way. Where do I start with this thing?

The symbol in your Dock is just an alias.
iMovie should be in your "Applications" folder.
Remove the questions mark from the Dock and drag iMovie to the Dock.
Also iMovie requires Firewire, not USB. Firewire is also called i.Link and IEEE1394.

    Is this issue with Tiger or Leopard? Your profile indicates you have a machine with Tiger, yet your signature of your post says you have Leopard.
    Also, there is no such thing as a Powerbook Pro. Read the text under the screen to tell us exactly which model you have. MacBook Pro is the name given to Macs that are for the pro lineup of notebooks once Apple shifted to the Intel CPU.

  • Question marks instead of icons in the dock.

    Hi,
    can anyone suggest why my macbooks have question marks instead of icons on and off in the dock. When clicked the icon will re-appear and the application will launch. There is no pattern to which icons will be replaced by question marks or how many. Sometimes all will be question marks, and other times only one? Any ideas?
    Also - just a general question - of less importance, but with Leopard looming, historically how well does a server cope with new software versions on clients? Will I really need Server 10.5?

  • Question mark instead of icon in dock

    I'm seeing a question mark instead of the VLC icon in my dock. Does anyone know why?

    The icons in the dock are basically shortcuts to the applications themselves.
    Can you still open VLC through Spotlight or the Applications folder?
    If so, delete the question mark from the dock by dragging it up off the dock and letting it go "poof." Then open VLC, right-click on its icon in the dock, and choose Keep in Dock.

    I use picasa for my photos..currently there is a question mark imposed over the icon on the dock and it won't open...what does this mean?
    Thanks for any help.

    The icon in the dock is a shortcut to the app itself.....for some reason the icon has lost contact with the app.......go to your Applications folder and drag Picasa back to the dock....a new alias (shortcut) will be created.....

    Where is your Calculator application located? Before you can put it into the Dock you need to remove the Question Mark. Select it with the mouse and drag it out of the until it "poofs" away. Now locate Calculator and drag its icon into the Dock.

  • Refinement Panel show "file name" values with question mark instead of spaces

    Hi,
    I customized Refinement Panel to refine by file name. In some cases the value (file name) is shown with question mark instead of space. It looks like gibberish and the refine by that value doesn't bring the result.
    Any ideas how to solve?

  • Question mark over the Mail icon

    What can I do if there is a question mark over the mail icon in dock... I can't open the Mail now. Thanks!

    you can reinstall Mail using the leopard install DVD. insert the DVD and open it in finder. among other things you should see a folder called "optional installs". Open it and double-click on Optional Installs.mpkg. Follow the instructions. at the appropriate page you'll have to check the box for "Mail" on the list of software you want to install.
    This will install Mail 3.0. To update it to the latest version of mail reinstall

  • Blue question mark instead of photo

    I sometimes get a blue question mark instead of a photo on my mac book pro.  How do i fix that?

    Hello tomfromridgetown,
    Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
    I understand that sometimes when you receive an email it contains a small box with a question mark for the attachment. It sounds like what you may be seeing is a windmill.dat attachment. Please review the attached article for information on what these attachments are and how to avoid them in the future.

  • There is a question mark covering my safari icon and it wont open

    Why is there a question mark covering my safari Icon and how do I remove it?

    Where is it? Did you move it or did you delete it? Try doing a Spotlight search for it just in case you moved it.
    Otherwise, get out your OS X installer disc and look in the optional installs folder for an installer from which you can restore pre-bundled software. You may be able to restore Safari. Or, you can download a Safari version for Tiger or Leopard at support.apple.com/downloads.

  • Fmt:message returns question marks instead of unicode

    well, pretty simple problem.
    When i'm using <fmt:message key="someunicode"/>, the tag returns question marks instead of hebrew unicode string.
    The page displays unicode that isn't coming from the tags.
    The resorues files is ok too.
    Anyone knows something about it?

    Have you set the bundle for the fmt tag before you use the <fmt:message> tag?
    <fmt:setBundle var="mybundle" basename="resources.application"/>
    Then :
    <fmt:message key="my.key.message" bundle="${mybundle}"/>You can also the the bundle in the <fmt:message> tag.

  • Java app is writing question marks instead of extended characters

    People,
    since I've installed an Sun E3000 with Solaris9 I'm having problems with accents (extended characters) in my java application: - it writes question marks instead of accents.
    This machine used to be Solaris 2.6 and we formatted/installed Solaris9 and got the problem since then.
    My application uses a thin driver to connect to Oracle9i database, and via unix I can call sqlplus and insert chr(199) and SELECT it () with no problems, but application writes ? in nohup.out.
    If you can point me in any direction, please let me know.
    Regards, Orlando.

    I'm pretty sure that the default locale "C" corresponds to the 7-bit US-ASCII character set. Again, this is all the methaphorical shot in the dark, but it's the only time that I've seen this happen. Sun's own documentation says to use something other than C or US ASCII if international or special characters will be needed.
    Here is my /etc/default/init for ISO 8859-15.
    TZ=US/Eastern
    CMASK=022
    LC_COLLATE=en_US.ISO8859-15
    LC_CTYPE=en_US.ISO8859-1
    LC_MESSAGES=en_US.ISO8859-1
    LC_MONETARY=en_US.ISO8859-15
    LC_NUMERIC=en_US.ISO8859-15
    LC_TIME=en_US.ISO8859-15
    If the system that you're using can be rebooted, try changing the /etc/default/init file to something like the above, but with the specific for your locale. Obviously, en_US is not your area, but I have no idea what Brazil's would be.

  • Question marks instead of graphics

    I'm getting mostly question marks instead of graphics. I use earthlink as my ISP. Any suggestions?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    I'm using Mail 1.3.11. The emails are generally coming from merchants. The mail stays on the earthlink server until it is downloaded onto my wife's 6 yr old iMac. The emails generally look fine there.
    Thanks so much for the response.

  • TS3276 message displays with question marks instead of content

    The mail message doesn't load completely.  Instead, it has question marks instead of the content.  There doesn't seem to be the choices under View Message that the help window suggests. How do I get the mail system to display what it considers unsafe images?

    Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folders. In OS X 10.9 there are two sandboxes, while in 10.8 there is only one. If you're running a version older than 10.8, this comment isn't applicable.
    Back up all data.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
    Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
    from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
    Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
    Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
    *If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
    from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
