A question on heat

I really have my heart set on buying a Macbook Pro. However, I'm not sure what to make about the heat issue. I've used laptops that start to run somewhat warm after use, but never thought much about it.
After reading through several posts, It's hard for me to tell if this is a thermal compound issue, a fan issue or another issue entirely.
Is it the general consensus that the fans do not operate as they should? If so, this should be able to be corrected in a future firmware and/or OS upgrade... which makes me feel better about a purchase.
Let me know your thoughts.

I will be ordering my MacBook Pro today. I have the same concerns as you do but decided to get one anyway. I am well aware of the heat issues that have been discussed and they are certainly concerning but I need the power of the MBP to do my work in a mobile type work environment.
While there are many, many reports of overheating in the forums here, remember that you are hearing primarily from those who are having difficulty with these units on this forum. There are thousands of units out there with absolutely no problem at all. You rarely hear from those who are happy with their units.
I think it is worth the risk...these are amazing computers.
It will certainly be a HUGE speed bump for me after using this G4 PowerBook for the past 2.5 years.
If you buy with a credit card, you will have some extra assurance too.
If I were you, I would just jump in - take the plunge. It will very likely be a very positive experience for you.

  • Questions on heat, hard drive, graphics 1.5GHz

I am considering a new Powerbook 12 inch to replace the 15 inch TiBook I just traded in at Powermax -- stretching the budget to the current 15 is tough, especially when there still seem to be at least some firmware questions if not hardware -- and the small 12 is tempting. Whatever it is, it has to be a Mac, and due to monitor spanning, it has to be a Powerbook.
    So some questions.
How is the 12 inch these days for heat? Obviously heavy hard drive activity (such as all the demos they run on it in the Apple Store) will heat up the left side wrist rest given where the hard drive is, but how is it for typing on in actual day-to-day use?
Anyone tried the 100GB 5400RPM BTO? Of course the 80GB 5400 is standard, but is there any significant speed difference between the two (denser platters usually mean faster transfers).
How about the Nvidia 5200 graphics card? Any bottlenecks I should be aware of compared to a Radeon 9550/9600/9700?
And, any difference in durability compared to the 15?
Lastly, how about the display? They seem a bit dim in the store, but they also seem like they have a jiggered stock profile. How about when you hardware profile it properly (I have a ColorVision Spyder2Pro)?

As far as video chipsets go, a 5200 is not going to run with the ATi 9600 or better in terms of fps for the gpu, I'm not sure about the 9550. The 9600XT, and I'm using one in a desktop, roughly runs with the 5700 Ultra and a little behind the 5900 in nvidia's lineup. I'd say as far as notebook gpu's go, all those gpu's are dated and are in need of revising. The 5200 is a couple years old and so are the ATi gpu's, that is for desktops. But when you look @ PB specs, a 9700 128 MB video vs 64 MB FX5200, the 9700 is way ahead.

  • Buying First Generation Air-Question of Heat and Performance

Do the first generation AIrs handle simple video watching OK and is watching video choppy? Also are the fans very noisy during simple and normal operations like word-processing or internet surfing, or do these machines easily overheat?
    thanks

    Hey all,
I own a first gen MBA for about 3 months now. It is a highly durable machine and has never let me down. I do all kinds of stuff, from office applications to video editing and even 3d rendering using 3dsmax in a virtualbox running XP on the MBA. I take it almost everywhere I go.
My experience with heat is, that the most important thing is to keep the vents on the bottom clear. All my slowdowns and heat related issues came when these vents where blocked. I can hook the MBA up to my 1280x720 projector and watch a movie or two without slow down-issues. I put it on the floor and the vents are clear. Temp and fans go up, but no kind of performance problems. If you put it on carpet or on your bed, the problems begin, as than the ventilation gets blocked.
But, to answer the threadstarters question: performancewise you can do anything on the MBA as you would expect to do on any other Core 2 Duo-CPU. It has two cores, afterall. Problems is: if you cut the airflow to it, one of the cores is shut down.

  • Question about heat & system fan ? with Corecenter software?

    hello guys,
i am having some strange experience well i just happened to clean my CPU well just external clean with cloth well then when i started i heard sound of some sort it turned out to be a plastic piece with the fan anyway i just did not do anything else well recently my CPU is very running cool i mean does System temeperature goes high will my CPU fan go high too i mean i dont' get a reading for my System fan speed in corecenter why ? can i do something about it please tell me. ? should i check the inside of my CPU well i am no expert but i am still ameteure well what do you say

I don't think CoreCenter uses the system temperature to control fan speed.
Is your cpu fan still working? When you say a plastic piece is broken, do you mean a fan blade? If so you should replace the fan.

  • Question about heat readings on iMac

    Hello everyone!
Is these readings normal? These readings are under normal use (surfing and watching some YouTube)
I have noticed that LCD Proximity and Optical Drive Proximity get particularly hot. Why?
I Hope that someone can come up with a reason why, and answer if this is normal.
    Thank you!

Watching YouTube videos is why they are so hot. However, the fans should be running faster to cool the machine, so I would take it in for service because something doesn't seem right. In the meantime try Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC).

  • Nokia Lumia 1520 - Getting a replacement/swap phon...

I bought a black color lumia 1520 in december , new delhi, India.
I had no serious issues while using it but when i installed microsoft solitaire and just played it for 5-10mins the left upper back side of the phone felt really hot. It was really uncomfortable.
Few days later i tried Asphalt 8 and had 3G turned on, same issue. Few updates for phone came along (extras and info etc) still the problem was thr.
I thought its just because of the games and high end specs of the phone but whole january i faced the same issue.
In mid february i went to nearby nokia care center and got my phone checked, they too tested it using wifi and some other checks and said they need to send this phone to other center or thr office. They gave me a job sheet, noted down the concern of heating issue. Later they called me up after few days and said we will be giving you a replacement for same. Black color wasn't available , only yellow. I requested for white and i am still waiting (a week now) .
    Questions:
The heating issue is normal to 1520?
Replaced phone will be a refurbished phone or a new one?
How to check if the replaced one is new or a used one? Any codes to check manufacturing details?
What document they will provide me at the time of replacement?
Hope this thread will help others as well.
    Regards,
    Sid

    Thanks for the quick reply
The nokia care center owner told me it will be a new device but not a retail device and he clearly mentioned it wont be a refurbished one as well.
They get tax free phones that are provided to users for replacement which doesnt comes with accesories.
They get 10-20 phones in a box. So it won't be a seperate box packed phone.
My main concern is not ending up with a used phone or a demo one.

  • Possible RAM woes!

Well..after posting a question about heat/sluggish performance..got a nice response from the Hatter. Among his many suggestions was to get copy of MemTester (or something like that..). Well, I did, and after I ran the program, the word "FAILURE!!" was scattered all over the report! Question is..does a "failure" report mean my whole bank (4X512) is bad?..or, does it take just one bad chip to earn that label. I'm thinking about taking out the two original Apple chips (about 5-6 years old) and seeing what kind of report I get with just 1 GB of new chips that I added last year. Good idea? If I decide to replace two chips, can I get a couple from OWC and mix them in with another brand? (same specs). By the way, after running initial test, I removed and reseated all memory, and got far fewer failure notices, but still enough to alarm me. Thoughts?? Thanks

You have to start testing and swapping. Can you mix? yes. But I would look at Crucial first.
    http://www.crucial.com/mac/
Is there an address of where it fails? It only takes one DIMM of one chip to be bad. Go back to the other post and link to MacIntoch's BAD RAM report (I know it is long, but it is helpful in understanding what is happening).
After swapping and changing RAM configuration. reboot again into OF and reset-nvram as well. You should end up with memtest not reporting any problems hopefully!

  • N86 - Battery Dead Twice within 6 months time

Hi, I own a N86 at July 2009 and replace battery once in Sept 2009. Now 28 Nov my battery dead again. Seems like my battery dying every 2 months. NOKIA PLEASE RECALL THIS BATTERY!!!

It's not a question of heating the battery up once and it dying. Lithium-ion cells are slowly killed by oxidation and that increases at elevated temperatures. Given that most smartphone batteries are already being run ragged by going through their complete capacity every day (whether charged in one go or charged several times), it doesn't take much time sitting in a glove box in a warm part of the world before the battery will keel over.
I absolutely agree that only doing full discharges isn't great for the battery's lifespan, and batterires should be charged frequently instead, but six months is a heck of a short time.
Help I'm trapped in a sig factory.

  • 990FXA-GD80V2 and water cooling

    Hi,
Been combing the web trying to find an answer for my question and stumbled upon this forum. I figured you might know. I just purchased a combo pack on Newegg that had a MSI 990FXA-GD80V2 motherboard and AMD FX-8150. Seeing how the stock fan/heatsink barely keeps the heat in check i was looking for alternatives. What i want to know is if the motherboard would work well with the CPU cooled by lets say CORSAIR H80 water cooler. I know from recently help a friend with his rig that without the normal CPU fan some motherboards them selves overheat. Only way we fixed his was to bolt a separate fan on the mobo for that issue.
So a recap on my question. Does the motherboard its self have adequate cooling to allow the CPU to have watercooling?
    Thanks

The question of heat is covered in a few areas.. air flow of the case itself.. to include amount of fans, and if you plan to run, in your case the FX-8150 overclocked or not. At stock speeds the CPU cooler that came with the CPU will work fine.. possible with even a small OC. If you are planning to OC and/or play with variable OC's and testing.. a better CPU cooler is the way to go. The new water cooling systems like the H80/100 and other self contained water coolers are good. Better than a self built water cooling system, there is less chance of leakage.
If you take the time to look at CPU cooler reviews... a lot of good air coolers are cooling better than a cooling system like the H80. A real nice thing about the coolers like the H80 is airflow in the case. It also takes a case that can handle the size of some of the air coolers. A lot of them are huge in size. I have a friend who has both the H80 and H100. He tells me that he likes the cooling of the H100 better. He does serious Overclocking. I also own the 990FXA-GD80 and have an FX-8150 on the way. I am using a Zalman 9900. I plan to continue using it.. that said, my friend is trying to talk me into an H100. My case is the Antec 280 and it is possibly the largest case on the markey with 7 120mm fans running, plus the CPU cooler. If you look at the bottom of posts we list our equipment. Being new here, you might not have read the posting guide. If you give us your information, how you plan to use and overclock or not we can give a better answer.
To focus on your question.. like Svet answered... yes, the H80 should do a good job.
    Good Luck

  • Heat, Fan, and dimming display questions

I have a hot running MacBook Pro. I've had the unit returned for service and only one of my four issues was resolved. The unit is going back again for service.
I seemed to irritate the last tech support person by asking questions about the heat issues. Maybe some people here can help answer the question that changed his tone for the worse during the remainder of the support call.
Can you easily hear the fan(s) when they operate or do you have to put your ear real close to the laptop to hear the fan(s) operate?
I asked because I couldn't tell you what a fan sounds like on this machine. I'm on my second motherboard and I cannot feel any air flow from all those vents (or anywhere else for that matter) along the back of the laptop near the display hinge.
Has anyone found a correlation between a dimming display and heat? What happens is the display dims the equivelent of bringing down the brightness down three levels and after a few seconds it brightens back up.
The laptop is going in for a second repair for the following reason:

Hello I just wanted to give you some insight on the screen dimming. If you have not unchecked the box at the bottom of the display pane is system prefs the display will dim when ever it scences a lower light situation. I have attached a picture. HERE

  • Question about the heat sinks in these models

    Hey all,
Can anyone tell me about the heat sinks used in these model laptops?
    Here are my questions:
Are they made from pure copper?
What is inside the tubes that run between the processor covers and the fan? Is it just air? or something else?
Is the thermal paste that sticks to the processors toxic?
I'm not sure this is the right place to ask but thought i might as well try.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

you mean the entire T series range, or are you after information on a specific T model?
    1) most of the parts are made of pure copper
    2) there is a working fluid within heat pipe, which should either ethanol or acetone. The phase change from liquid to gaseous phase is what transports the heat away from CPU/GPU/motherboard chipsets.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_pipe
    3) thermal paste usually contains silicon and silver, it is not to be ingested as such.

  • Questions for online experts about heat / fan / temp in dv1432us

    hi there online experts,
i have an hp dv1432us.  fab little machine.  works great.
lately the fan was running a lot (almost constant) so i vacuumed the fan inlet and blew air in the outlet.  fan now cycles on and off every minute or 2.  everest sensor software says CPU is at 52-59 degrees celsius.
    questions:
    1) is it normal for the fan to cycle on and off every minute?  in other words, what is a the normal amount of fan running for this machine?
    2) what is the normal temp range for this CPU (and hard drive, while we're talking baout such things)
given that info, is it time for a major cleanout of this thing?  will the possible heat buildup cause damage if i do nothing?
    3) if i am ever so careful, should i take this apart and clean it?  it's been 5 years of a lot of hours of use.
    4) can i disassemble it down to the heatsink without major risk of ESD damage?   I have home-built many case PC's, so i am not a newbie . . . how risky is it to take this thing apart and clean that heatsink?
eagerly looking forward to any and all info,  best, justin

    justinlockehp,
A couple of good documents on hp.com address this issue:
Fan Runs Constantly, the PC Operates Slower than Expected and Generates Heat
Reducing Heat and Fan Noise by Cleaning Air Vents
    1) This can be normal depending on the amount of work the notebook is doing, the amount of heat being generated, and the fan control algorithm in the BIOS.
    2)  I don't have the specific range for the PC or components but I can tell you that todays notebooks are much warmer than they used to be.  The GPUs and CPUs generate much more heat than ever before.
    3)  Use the instructions in the document above, anything further would probably be more work than required.  However, the instructions are here: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00636251.pdf.
    4) ESD damage is always a risk and will void any warranty that you may have.  My advice is to stay grounded.

  • Another Heat Question

Okay, so let me first start by saying that I have a extensive knowledge about computers including a diploma, a degree and multiple certifications (A+ etc).
So, my relatively new MBP was getting quite hot recently and decided to check the actual operating temperature. Very quickly I realized that it was running at a very unsafe level even when just sitting there. The temperatures are ranged from 75-105(~221F) degrees Celsius when at IDLE (80-90% idle to be specific). This is obviously a fault with either the temperature sensor, CPU or something else. Anywho I drove an hour and took my Macbook in to the apple store and left it there for two days, which was a HUGE inconvenience for me because I use it for my day to day work. They called me to pick it up and told me that they found no fault and that the computer was operating well within the realm of what is deemed a "proper operating temperature". I tried explaining what was happening but the apple store host clearly had no idea what to say and was not would not show me the report the benchmark generated.
I called the 1800 number and talked to apple support about the problem who then transferred me to a level 2 tech. I explained very calmly that CPUs were never ever meant to run this hot and that if this continued the CPU would burn out several times sooner then if it were cool. She was extremely unhelpful and all she kept doing was plugging Apple Care over and over. I told her that it seems ridiculous that I need to spend more money just to project my obviously faulty investment. I probably should have known she wasn’t going to help after she asked me if we use dollars in Canada and that she "always gets those two mixed up".
Even as I type this I have nothing but firefox and a temperature monitor open, and my computer is jumping back and forth from 70-80C. If it weren’t for Apples all mighty warranty’s I would crack it open and try and fix the problem myself. Also, these questions are probably going to get asked, all updates are done, computer is getting used on a flat surface in a very cool climate and most basic trouble shooting has been done. Also, im not using any 3rd party application that changes the fan speed.
    Any ideas?

    Hi , Intentt,
What I'm not clear about here is just what your question actually is.
Are you asking what may be causing your heat issue, or are you asking what you should do to get your computer looked at further by Apple?
If it is the former, it is going to get tedious for you and us if we keep on digging around for possibilities which you then say you have already tried. If it is the latter then the answer is simple. All you can do is try a different Apple Service Provider, or try further contact through Apple Customer Relations.
    Cheers
