A question to Adobe legal team

If I created a Lightroom Develop preset simulating analog film and wanted to distribute it online, can it be copyright-protected as my intellectual property from potential infringement?
Arguments in support:
The process of creating presets can be relatively complex and creative. Therefore presets can be treated as a creative work.
The content of preset file can be interpreted as code telling software what to do. Therefore copying a preset or it's part is the same as copying software source code.
Can anybody own any Lightroom setting or combination of settings? Probably not if it is as simple as "vibrance -5". But what if it is more complex like a unique combination of all sliders or curve points?
Arguments against:
Creating develop presets does not involve any coding and presets do not command computer hardware what to do. Therefore are they copyrightable software?
Develop presets do not contain any new functionality, interface or artwork therefore creative aspect of presets is not clear.
Lightroom presets are most similar to music equaliser. Can a combination of an equaliser sliders be a subject to copyright?
Can anybody own any Lightroom setting or combination of settings? Probably not if it is "vibrance -5" but what if it is more complex like a unique combination of all sliders or curve points?
Grateful for any comments from law specialist.

What the others have said plus there's no way you'll get free legal advice from Adobe.
You're more likely to get the responses you seek by paying a copyright lawyer specialising in software.
The points presented in your post seem like reasonable questions from a lay person but there are undoubtedly established legal principles in existence which already cover your scenario.

  • Some Questions on Adobe PDF Forms

    Hi,
I have some questions on Adobe Forms development (especially Adobe Forms in ABAP)
    1)     In a form interface, in the Code Initialization can we use Object Oriented Syntaxes such as class method calls, etc?
    2)     Can we declare Global Data variables with reference to Class References / Interfaces
    3)     Can we use the latest ECC 6.0 enhancement framework to add code in the standard form interface to enhance / enrich some logic within the form? This is to avoid copying the form interface into a Z in order to enrich the form via coding?
Please let me know if this is possible at all and how
    Will award points
    Thanking You in advance
    Regards,
    Aditya

That is possible of course. You should use the PDFObject API for that requirements.
    1. define a xml schema with all data given by SAP system.
    2. create a form template which uses this schema as data connection
    3. implement a java application (i.e. J2EE application) which:
    - gets the data from SAP system and generates some pdf files (using PDFObject API)
    - reads pdf files back to xml and submits the data to a BAPI

  • THE FAMOUS ERROR: There was a problem reading this document (15) - Thanks Adobe Engineering team

As a result of this error, I cannot delete pages in a big PDF file I have of 1032 pages.
The error, famous on the web and in Google, is:
there was a problem reading this document (15)
I hope I can find a solution for this, because I cannot delete the unnecessary pages inside the document which is driving me crazy.
Adobe Acrobat X has a very poor quality testing. In fact I don't beleive Adobe test their products, I think they just program them, label them as the finished product, ASK FOR A HIGH PRICE, OF COURSE, and release them to the market creating a lot of nightmares and headaches to the customer.
Adobe Acrobat X crashed several times when the files have flash content inside or formularies. The program, simply, is bad programmed with a very poor engineering inside.
As soon I find an alternative for PDF, I will switch, I promise, in fact I don't promise it, I SWEAR IT.
And if I dont find a solution for this I will put in my car a banner that says "DON'T BUY ADOBE ACROBAT, IS THE WORST PROGRAM YOU CAN FIND!"
I'm loosing days and days of work, this is costing me problems and money.

Yes, there is something wrong with the document. That is the defective programming the Adobe engineering team did. And please, allow me to explain you why it is defective. After you spend millions dollars in 950 engineers and 3100 beta testers, you can destroy Adobe Acrobat X easily just downloading a website rich in flash content. Some animated banners in the downloaded pages from the web, it's enough to destroy it.
Just go to a website where you have animated banners, and press Shift+Crtl+O to download the pages...
Save your PDF document and then try to work with it.
If the document has a big size, let's say 1000 pages approximately, and many of them have flash content... Adobe Acrobat X crash automatically just moving from one page to another.
    As simple as that.
Is the most unstable program I've seen in all my life. And please, don't tell me it's my machine, because I've tested it in other computers. The same!
    But there is more! yes
Forms fields also destroy Acrobat X
In a big PDF file having several pages inside with forms, just go to Tools, Forms and Edit, then in the list of pages try to delete the forms fields selecting them and pressing the Del key... crasshhhh Acrobat X die.
What kind of betatesters you chose to test your products? For sure are people that are working with light documents of 5... 10 pages and no more.
For sure are not people working extensively with Adobe Acrobat, as I do.
And what happens when Acrobat X crash miserably time after time? that the Error 15 comes, because the file becomes corrupted.
    This is not serious.
Is this the kind of performance and stability that Acrobat provide to the customers? having the risk to lose important documents and data, due how unstable is the program?
You can tell me you hired NASA personnel to do this program, but customers need results, and crashing the program just pressing one key is not serious.
And talking about complains I don't want to remember the last update of the Acrobat 9 !!!
And you know what? a simple tool as NitroPDF don't crash!
Sadly NitroPDF is not an option for me, because I embed videos in the PDF documents and NitroPDF don't allow me that.
I am using Adobe Acrobat X because sadly I don't find another alternative, the day I find it, I'll switch for sure.
Or perhaps we can get a miracle, and your programmers could focus in what is IMPORTANT: STABILITY AND PERFORMANCE.

  • Basic questions in adobe form

    Hello Experts,
i have a few questions in adobe forms
when we first create a form, in the left side of the screen, we have a hierarchy i.e
    *MASTER PAGE
    CONTENT AREA
    UNTITLED FORM PAGE
can you pls explain the concepts of the above... can we have more than 2 master pages in a single page? whats this content area? can we have more than one?
Suppose if i want to build a form with the following elements :
Header part : which should be displayed in all the pages
Body part: which should display internal table which should flow to the next page
immediately after the display of the internal table, i should display some other text
Footer part: should be displayed in all the pages
Now my question is, if i want to build this form, which elements should be a part of what i.e master page or content area or untitled form page?
    Thanks in advance
    Shekhar

    Hi,
    MASTER PAGE:
Master pages specify the layout and background for the form design. You can add objects that will occupy the position throughout the form design on a master page. The Master Pages tab is hidden by default. A typical form design that has two pages with different dimensions contains at least two master pages, one for each page.
    CONTENT AREA:
Content areas provide anchoring and layout management for all the objects in a form, including subforms.
    UNTITLED FORM PAGE:
Pages represent the pages of a form. Each page derives its size and orientation from a master page and, by default, each page is associated with the default master page that LiveCycle Designer creates. Each page is created with a default subform that covers the whole page. If your form design contains more than one master page and page, you can choose which master page to assign to a page.
can we have more than 2 master pages in a single page
    yes
    whats this content area?
    Already described above
can we have more than one?
    Yes
For the form designing, put the header and footer part in the Master page as it has to appear in every page. For the table display wrap the table in subform and make the contect type as "Flowed". This will  make the table to grow to other pages.

  • Questions regarding Adobe Interactive Forms capabilities

    Hi,
We have the following questions regarding Adobe Interactive Forms.
    1. Not able to create a text field with dynamic size according to the data entered in the text field in a form with Static Content type forms.   We use a scroll area, but cannot print content that is not visible in the scroll area.
We currently have Designer 7.0 and 2004 SP 16. I tried to set “Form Properties -> PDF Render Format” to be “Acrobat 7.0 Compatible Dynamic PDF” but the text field did not grow dynamically.
    2. Another requirement is that once one form is accepted by the Customer, we need to generate a second, new form (with all user entered information from the first form) and the customer should be able to print the form.
To implement this, we need to have a form that can support dynamically growing text field in some areas, and specific positioning of form elements for other areas. Can we have a dynamic form which lets the fields grow dynamically according to the data entered in the field and with specific positioning of elements?
    3. Sending emails from Offline forms – Requirement is to send an email as soon as the form is accepted by our Customers. But the Customers can complete the form offline. Is it possible to automatically send an email in an offline forms without having the user push the ‘send’ button from their email application?  Can the Adobe Form do that part automatically?
Appreciate any help regarding above questions.
    Thanks,
    Kalyan

    HI Francois,
Thank you very much for the very helpful information.
    1. I am able to insert now the floating field inside a static text but the text does not grow dynamically even when I set the form type to be "Flowed Content". Is it something that required Adobe Designer 7.0 and also 2004s ADS?
    2. I can still select only Flow or position content from the option but how can we use both in the same form? I am using Adobe Designer 7.0 and it allows to select only one. Is it again a problem in lower versions that I use?
    3. This is an excellent idea and I strongly believe this is going to work (am trying to create POC for this solution). The form should be able to call the webservice as long as the user is connected to internet.
Can you provide your views on the first two points. I appreciate your help.
    Thanks,
    Kalyan

i just downloaded photoshop elements 7.0 to a new box and it tells me that my serial number is not valid. the adobe support team says the number is valid, but that they can't help me

Which operating system are you using?
When you say downloaded, where did download pse 7 from?
Do you have the original install disk or original download for pse 7?
I believe the serials won't interchange between the disk version of pse 7 and the electronic down load version.

  • Question to Adobe: Ruling out non-Adobe viewers via Acrobat Javascript

    Hi,
***I would like to address this question to Adobe Acrobat developers:****
I'd like to add a doc-level javascript (thru another script) that will check the viewer type, and if it neither Acrobat (6 and higher) nor Reader, the document will close.
    So I wrote:
    this.addScript("CheckViewer", "var viewer = app.viewerType;\
         if ((viewer !== \"Exchange-Pro\") && (viewer !==\"Reader\"))\
{app.alert(\"This Document Requires Adobe Reader or Acrobat Version 10 or Later.\");\
        this.closeDoc(true);}");
The script is correctly placed in the document, BUT if I open the document in Foxit Reader, for example, nothing happens just because Foxit disguises itself as "Reader". Is there a way to overcome this problem?
I think, the best way would be to change the Acrobat Javascript API so that  app.viewerType values will be: Adobe_Exchange-Pro, Adobe_Exchange, and Adobe_Reader.
    I would appreciate your advice!

As you understand, I am not for "breaking millions of existing PDFs". I just need a good solution for a serious problem that can no longer be ignored.
If I were a Foxit developer (or an Adobe developer), I would tell you what is missing or fails quickly. That's the reason why at the beginning of the post I wrote:
***I would like to address this question to Adobe Acrobat developers:****
In any case, I appreciate your input much!

  • Adobe Legal wording for Projector Project deployment

When I deploy a finished Flash Projector Project is there any Adobe Legal wording that need to travel with the finished project? If so can someone point me in the right direction?

No legal wording is required at all in regard to Adobe or the use of their product to create the product. When you agreed to their licenses to use the software you already assume all the risk of anything produced with it.
Your own license for your own product should be included however, to protect yourself.

  • LR3 download problems, Adobe Australia. Question for Adobe or anyone?

It's been several days now since I online-purchased my upgrade to LR3 from Adobe Australia's online store. Serial numbers came through fine by email, no problem. However, when I went to download the file from the link provided in the Serial number email, another issue altogether - Akamai download manager installs then chugs away until 99% download, then freezes the entire system requiring cold restart to resurrect things. Have now tried this several times, always with the same result.
The process does generate a file in the download target directory, called "Lightroom_3_LS11.exe.dlm", 164,378 Kb, as you can see it still has the .dlm extension.
Question to Adobe or anyone else who might feel they know: has Akamai simply failed to remove the .dlm extension, and if I manually remove the extension, is the file likely to work?
The 'alternative download method' on the download site provided to Australian customers seems to be  a dead link, nothing happens when I click on that. Will have to try Adobe Australia's helpline, but that is only 9am-5pm Mon-Fri so I have to wait until next week (it's Friday night here and Monday is a public holiday). No 24/7 help in Asia Pacific it seems!
Note, I did check all of the security settings in IE8 for compliance with Akamai requirements before starting.
Very frustrating, particularly after having zero problems with online purchase/download of all previous versions (I've been a constant user since version 1.0). The difference this time seems to be the Akamai download manager, perhaps particularly in its implementation on the Asia Pacific download site, as US customers seem not to be having the same level of problems?
    My system:
    Windows XP Pro SP3

Just a further update re. my LR3 download problem:
I managed to successfully download the LR3 update file using another computer running Vista 64. That computer was also running different antivirus software (McAfee Security Centre) so that may perhaps also have had an effect.
So for anyone who may be be having similar problems, my experience downloading LR3 from the Adobe Australia website has been:
Akamai download manager failed to download the LR3 update file on the following system:
    Windows XP SP3
    Norton Internet Security 2010
Akamai download manager successfully downloaded the LR3 update file on the following system:
    Windows Vista 64
    McAfee Security Centre
    Cheers,
    David

  • Is Dreamweaver right for me? (also Question about Adobe courses)

    Hi!
    I'm a grade five student,
who is wanting to learn about
    web design and animations.
    I already have Photoshop cs5
but i want to learn about web design.
Dreamweaver is the correct program right?
I also have a question about Adobe Courses (Online)
Will they go through, and show you how to set up websites
with dreamweaver... Templates, etc. stuff like that?
    All comments appreciates.
    Thanks
    CG

I am hardy the most qualified to answer this, but I'll have a go at it. First of all, I admire your ambition!
Dreamweaver is a great tool, but it will not necessarily teach you web design. Once you have some basic idea of what goes into a web design, you will realy appreciate what DreamWeaver can do for you. I am going to pass on to you the same advice given to me when I first wanted to get into DreamWeaver and web design.
I would realy suggest some basic HTML and CSS books and use a text editor to create your first pages. Once you start to undersatnd what you are doing, then by all means, get some DreamWeaver training. Everyone has their own favorite titles to learn the basics from, so I'll just say these are a suggestion and helped me get started. The Head First series was clearly written, has a good sense of humor and helped me get the basics. Check your Libraries, second hand book stores, or other resale outlets. I know you mentioned the Adobe Online, but I've also used, and like, the Adobe Classroom in a Book series. Once I learned a particular version, I found the Missing Manual series good for advanced questions and going to a new version.
Don't get discouraged, stay with it and don't be afarid to try another book if you don't like the ones I've suggested. We all learn different ways and what worked for me may not work for you!
