A quick question concerning replacing the DVD drive in a HP pavillion dv6-2057cl

I need to replace the DVD drive in this dv6 and I am wondering if there is any wiggle room when it comes to the replacement drive.  Can I use another HP disc drive with a similar model # or am I restricted to the "identical" drive?
Some quick info follows:
OS = Windows 7 home premieum (32bit)
The drive pulled out of the laptop:
Super Multi DVD Rewriter
MODEL: GT20L
FW        : DC05
HW       : A2
TYPE    : AMCK702
CT : 7AXVK012GY3NRY
HP mPC PN : 461646-6C2
S/N :
{Removed for privacy}
MANUFACTURED : OCTOBER 2008
I have found a replacement with the same "Model #" and same "HP mPC PN" however it was manufactured in 2009 and I do not know if the placement of the SATA connection on the rear of the drive matches up or not.
Any help is much appreciated!!!!!!
Thank you,
DaFlash

It looks like the part number is the same. As long as the part number is the same, it is essentially the same part and should work without any issues. The only time that part may not work is if the part number is different. If any part is different from another part (firmware, hardware, etc.), it will have a different part number. As long as 461646-6C2 is the same on both, there shouldn't be any issue with replacing the drive.

  • Question on Replacing the Optical Drive on my G5?

I'm trying to replace the Optical drive on my G5 Power Mac. The instructions are very clear.
    1. unplug your G5
    2. open it
    3. open the two latches below the drive
    4. slide the drive out of the bay
    5. disconnect all cables
    6. detach the sliders on the bottom of the drive
    7. attach them to the new drive
    8. connect the cables
    9. slide it into place and close the latches
    10. close cover
But my optical drive is stuck solid in the little slides.. It wont budge.
Has anyone got any suggestions who has done this before?
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Hi Steve,
Yes, some can seem frozen in place, you need to pry or tap it gently to not so gently to break it loose sometimes, I had to use a screwdriver to jiggle mine loose, have you seen the installation video?

  • Can I replace the DVD drive with a BlueRay Burner?

I have the HP Pavillion a6647c. I assume so but don't know if it takes more power. I learned from an ealier lost I can't really upgrade my video card as my power supply isn't strong enough. 230W I think.
Just incase some knows this answer too......my goal is to burn my HD movies off the hard disk and on to blue ray disks. Currently the playback of the movies on the PC is a bit jerky and I've been told by Canon I need a better video card. Will a movie I burn to a blueray also be slightly jerky on my TV through my blueray player or is it just when played on the PC?

Yes,  you can update the DVD burner to a Blu-ray buner.  A movie that you have burned to a Bluray disc should play smoothly on your Blu-ray player. Your PC and your Blu-ray player are apples and oranges.

  • Blue-Ray drive in place of the DVD drive?

I have a DV7 1285dx that came with a standard DVD player. Is it possible to upgrade it to a blue-ray player?
I'm hoping that it could be as simple as buying a blue ray drive (eBay?) to replace the dvd drive in the laptop, then upgrading the software to let me play blueray disks.
If this is a viable possibility, do I need an HP blueray drive or will a Dell work?

these Drives should work with your DV 7 if advertized correctly..
you will need a Blu-Ray player to play Blu-ray movies and the Drive should automatically get detected as soon as you will install it.. no drivers required..

  • The dvd drive in my macbook pro will not read any disk.

The dvd is a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868.   The disks (CD or DVD) all show up as blank disks. Some will not eject.  Some will try to run.  I can hear it try to access the disk but it never gets up to speed. Is there some way to check the drive to see what the problem is?

It's probable that you have a bad DVD drive.  You can take it to an Apple Genius to see if they can fix or repair it (if it's under warranty).  If it isn't, you can replace the DVD drive with a hard drive or a new Super Drive by yourself (it's a tiny bit technical).  If you're still on warranty or have the extended AppleCare, you can get it fixed.

  • M30-107 - replacing the DVD-RW drive?

I'm thinking about replacing the DVD-RW drive in my laptop. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the steps that would be involved in doing this, or else where I might be able to find such information.
    Thanks!

    Hi Philip,
Feliks is quite correct with his observations on your query. SInce the unit is 'fixed' in your notebook you will invalidate your warranty if you replace it yourself.
However, as with most notebooks, the CD/RW can be removed if you really want to. It is normally slotted into place and then secured with one or two screws. My A30 for example is secired by a single screw accessible from the base of the notebook. I am not sure about the M30 model that you have so you will need to check where it is fastened.
Once the securing screw(s) are released the unit can be slid out of its slot.
You should then be able to find the identification label on the unit and this will tell you the make and model number.
If you are replaceing it with a similar unit then you will probably need to remove the plastic bezel and trim panels together with any mounting brackets and fit them to the new unit.
Replace the unit and re-secure it with the screws and the job is then done.
You can, of course, replace your unit with a different make (Toshibe notebooks use several different ones) but there is no guarantee that you new unit will work correctly without your having to install new drivers for it.

  • Replacing the zip drive with the dvd-ram

I've replaced the built in DVD-RAM with DVD burner.
I have a zip drive too. Can I to replace the zip drive with the DVD-RAM?
    Thanks

    Hi, mikmik -
Unless your G4 is a G4 MDD model, doing that is not easy at all.
The bay for the Zip drive on all G4's earlier than an MDD model is considerably smaller than a standard drive bay, which is what an optical drive needs.
Open your case and take a look at the relative sizes of the upper optical drive bay and the lower Zip drive bay.
In order to put replace the Zip drive with an optical drive you would need to do a fair amount of surgery on the frame. It has been done; here's a pictorial step-by-step by one fellow who did that to a B&W G3 -
    http://www.shanescot.com/photos/BW_mod/
The work needed on a G4 would be very similar to that.

  • Quick help- opening the DVD drive

so i got home a couple of hours ago to find a nice new g5 quad at my house, which i ordered 2 weeks ago. it took me a couple of hours to get every thing ready so i could set it up. and well i am typing on it right now. all i want to do is get all of my apps on here and hook this thing up to my RAID,
i have never thought of this before since i took the DVD Drives out of all of my other computers and put hard drives in place, i use all external drives, any way i planned on keeping and using the dvd drive with this computer so now i am confused, since 1 hour ago i gave the apple keyboard and mouse to my sister
how do i get the drive open if i am using a non apple keyboard!!!
i will keep searching these boards trying to find the but i thought i would post it up as well.
i am using a Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse.

that took way to long but i got it.
for some reason the default F12 did not work, downloading the MS keyboars software and setting F12, or other F keys to eject did not work but for some reason on the MS intellpro keyboard Pause break key works to eject it after you install the MS keyboard plug in. i tried all the tope keys before this and nothing work. but now the above key works. not sure why but i will go with it for now.

  • Replacing The Hard Drive, How To Install The OS Again?

Hi all again! Sorry for posting so many questions.
I have a macbook pro late 2011 model. I want to replace the hard drive with an SSD drive but I am not too familiar with Mac products. My question is... do I just take out the old hard drive and put the new one in? Is there a CD with the Max OS on it that I could then use to install the OS onto the new drive?
    Thanks!

There are a large number of DIY's, HowTo's and the like on the subject, may want to search a bit.
If you re comfortable to the layout and content  of the current internal drive, the quick & dirty would be:
Get an external enclosure for the new drive.
Connect/power up, then use Disk Utility to prep the drive for Mac use: GUID partition scheme & Apple Extended (Journaled).
Use Disk Utility or CarbonCopyCloner to clone the internal volume onto the external.
Test to ensure all is well.
    Swap drives when ok.

  • I just replaced the hard drive for my Mac Pro, and I am trying to restore what is on my Time Capsule, but it wont connect, and only is giving me the pinwheel of death. What do i do?

I just replaced the hard drive for my Mac Pro, and I am trying to restore what is on my Time Capsule, but it wont connect, and only is giving me the pinwheel of death. What do i do?

You will need to boot from some alternate boot device to accomplish this, if you did not initialize the drive before installing it.
If you have another Mac, you may be able to use FireWire target disk mode.
If your MacBook has a DVD reader and you have a Mac OS X Installer/Utilities DVD, such as the one that shipped with it, you can boot from that DVD, answer only the "what Language" question, and wait a quarter minute for the MenuBar to be drawn. Then examine the Utilities menu or the Installer menu and Find Disk Utility.

    Hi:
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01713747.pdf
Replacement optical drives with HP part numbers can be found in Chapter 3, page 33.
You can also read the instructions in chapter 4 on removing the drive and getting the part number off of it which will be normally found on a white sticker.  A 6 digit-3 digit part number (123456-001)
You can search by the part number on eBay for a used but working device or you can probably buy one new from HP by entering the part number at the link below.

  • DIY: Is it possible to replace the Hard Drive on a MacBook?!

It seems it is permitted to replace the Hard Drive on a MacBook (13"). I found Apple "Hard Drive Replacement Instructions 073-1045 Rev A" dated 26 Jan 2007.
OK this is very basic-- but my question is: When you get the Hard Drive and Install it-- can you boot from an external HD and then FORMAT THIS DRIVE? Where to PURCHASE the drive?
Thanks as I prefer to do this as my data is backed-up and to wait 15 days to have Apple do this in Belgium... I need this Mac!
Thanks for any comments.-- Again, key question is: WILL THE HD be unformatted or ??? and how to format. I have an external drive (several) or can boot from the DVD.
    THANKS!
    Steve

    You'll find a good tutorial here: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/installation.cfm.
Be sure to prep the new drive properly:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button and set the partition scheme to GUID, then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
Now you can clone your external drive to the new internal drive:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Select the internal volume from the left side list.
    2. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    4. Select the internal volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    5. Select the external (startup) volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
For added precaution you can boot into safe mode before doing the clone.

  • My G62-340US, I just had to replace the hard drive. My recovery discs seem compromised. HELP

On my G62-340US, I just had to replace the hard drive. I made the 4 recovery discs when it was new. Now restoring it 3 of the recovery discs ran but the 4th disc won't. Can the info on the 4th be found anywhere without having to buy a new set? Or can I buy just one disc?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi:
As far as I know, you would have to buy an entire new set.
But, if you can read all 25 characters of the W7 product key on the bottom of your notebook, I have a free solution to install a plain version of W7 by using the product key code on your notebook.
    Here's how to do that...
Download the W7 Home Premium 64 bit ISO file from the Microsoft link below.
    http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-58997.iso 2147483647 X17-58997.iso Windows 7 Home Premium x64 English
Make sure you got the whole 3.xx GB file to download because in rare circumstances, you get a download complete notification but you don't get the whole file to download.
After you download the ISO file you can burn it to a DVD using the ISO file burn option on your DVD burning program, or you can use this tool to transfer the ISO file to a DVD or 4 GB USB flash drive.
The tool will also make the media bootable.
    http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool
Then go to your notebook's support and driver page for the drivers and available software you need.
