When do I Post a New iChat Topic ?
Applies to All Version of iChat
    Welcome to the    Discussions
We realise you may be new to posting here in these Discussions. Please consider the following (Link to Terms and Conditions See item 2).
If your Post seems NOT to be an answer for the original postee. Please Don't Threadjack. See above link for explanation.
Pause for a moment and consider carefully if your reply belongs with an existing topic.
Is your issue the same as the Original Message ?
It's okay to post a "me too" and any relevant details you have. But if your issue is only similar, but different in some way, your reply may dilute the focus and divert the current effort in the thread (threadjack), so you should consider Adding a Discussion Topic about your issue, which will get more concentrated attention, and signify a trend in topic titles (if you use a similar subject title).
Note: The Reply links at the top right with preceding return arrow of the original message will result in a new reply to the original message. Consider that this may not be what you intended.
So, here's a Tip: Always use the reply button of a message (every reply in a thread has a Reply link) to relate your post to that message, and you'll always be in the proper position in the thread.
I suggest that you Post a New Topic (Here For iChat 3 or here for iChat 4) including information which would help better answer your question such as: Mac model and speed. Router and settings, Modem and settings, circmustances:
    * Your computer's specs. Scroll to the bottom and fill in the boxes and Save.
    * Your OS specs (As Above)
    * Which Version of iChat.
    * Your connection method.
    * Details of your Uplink and Download speeds from here with some indication if this is near the figure your ISP says you should get.
    * The ports you have set up on your Mac's Firewall (Tiger for iChat 3 or if ON in Leopard for iChat 4).
    * The ports you have set up in your Router and Or Modem.
    * Any error Messages you have seen and where that was. (See Note on Restrictions at bottom of this User's Tip)
    * An indication of whether you have read the User Tips
And any additional info such as:
    * Firewire cards and devices - powered and unpowered.
    * What camera and type it is.
    * The number of computers connected to the internet at your location.
    * The number and type of devices (routers and modems) are in your set up.
    * If you are using an SIP service like Voice over IP or Vonage.
Unless you have a solution for the original poster of a thread, it is not a good idea to hijack a thread with a new problem no matter how similar the problem is. You can reference to other threads by copying the web address into your post. But solutions given in a thread will not always pertain to you, and solutions to your problem won't always pertain to the initial poster if you attempt to hijack a thread. It is best to have individualized attention so the right advice is given to the right people. You can read through other threads and ask if something pertains to you, but please don't hijack the threads. It is worth noting that often most posters have not turned Off the Subscription feature so they will get an email of every subsequent reply.
    Note:
Since OS 10.4.7 and iChat 3.1 Apple have included a Log feature that pops up on failed Audio or Video chats.
This Pop up can be expanded by using the Details Reveal triangle to see the content before you send it to Apple.
Copying and posting this Log can be useful.
However not all of it is and it should be restricted to the bits above the line that reads "Binary Images for iChat"
Old Logs are stored on your Computer in your Home Folder (Little House icon)/Library/Logs/iChatConnectionErrors.
    Hope this helps.
Please, if posting Logs, do not post any Log info after the line "Binary Images for iChat"

  • How does Thunderbird post the 'new message' notice on my Mac?

I am trying to determine the service Thunderbird uses to post 'new message' notification pop-ups at the upper right of my terminal (they appear to be posted in the main menu of the system).
Actually, some other app has rarely posted similar pop-ups .... but they don't persist long enough for me to read, so I'm really trying to find out if these pop-ups are logged anywhere that I can inspect.
Thunderbird didn't generate the pop-ups, but knowing how it generates them may help me
I'm still running OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard) on my 1st gen intel mac, so I started my inquiry in the apple snow leopard forum where I was told that a pop-up service wasn't native in Snow Leopard, but some apps, including apple mail and Thunderbird, used Growl to post the pop-ups. A search of Thunderbird's add-ons ... and indeed a search (using the System Profiler) of apps, extensions and frameworks did not reveal anything with 'growl' in its name.
So .... I'm not really having trouble with Thunderbird, but if someone knows how it invokes the 'new message' pop-up in the main menu, maybe there's a place where such messages get logged and I can inspect it to view the pop-ups (from another app) that are disappearing too quickly for me to read.
    Anyone have any helpful info?
    Useful specs:
    machine: 1st gen intel Mac
    os: OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
    Thunderbird version: 24.5.0

    Settings>Messages>Show Preview>Off.
However, there is no way to completely turn off the popup alert, just the preview.

  • Is there a way to disable the new message notification in Skype Meetings?

Is there any way to turn off the notification at the bottom of our whiteboard that there are ### new messages.  It says Read directly to the right of the message.  You can X out of it but then the count starts back up again.  This is just an annoyance to our group and we would like to find a way to turn it off.

  • When in yahoo mail, the text in the Firefox page tab used to read "EH Quick - Yahoo Mail". Now it changes every second, from "EH Quick - Yahoo Mail" to---"Rickeasslmeir56 - EH Quick" to ---"Sent you a new message". WHY?

The Yahoo mail program works normally. All my folders, addresses, and emails are still there, but there is no email from "Rickeasslmeir56 " nor has there ever been

It's someone (surely a spammer) that's trying to contact you via online Yahoo Messenger. But there is a [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=713014 regression bug] in FF9 so Yahoo Mail fails to open a tab to display the message. If you don't use Yahoo Messenger in Yahoo Mail, turn off this feature (use the arrow on the right of your name).

  • Preferred way to link to other forum posts in your message?

    Hi,
Every once in a while I come across forum posts that have links to
other posts in them.  However, sometimes I cannot follow the link
and get back to the message that the poster is referring to.  Is
there a standard way to link to forum posts?
For example, take the following thread:
    http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=330&message.id=4386&query.id=0
The second message in this thread lists a URL that starts with
exchange.ni.com, and this just goes to a generic error message.
The poster does not give enough information for me to find the message
    using an advanced search.
Are there any standard procedures for linking to other NI discussion forum messages for new posts?
    --Peter

This is due to changes which were made to NI's site (and probably the database) that make old links obselete. Most people just use the method you did and hopefully these links will be kept up-to-date.
In this case, if you post a new message in that thread, I'm sure Ray will be happy to help you.

  • Finding threads that have new messages

Like a lot of people I post suggestions in reply to new topics. I don't want to subscribe to every thread that I take part in, that would be a lot of emails coming to me! But I do want to go to My Posts and quickly see what threads have new messages.
The way My Posts works though is the threads are shown in posting date order, meaning I think the date that I last added a message myself. Very often a thread may be quiet for a while, or I'm following along and have nothing new to add. When a new message is added it can be several pages back in the My Posts list, making it very hard to see them.
One work around I use is to go to the second page of My Posts, and then change the range=10 to range=1000, which then shows the last 1000 posts. Next I look at the page source and do a search for "updated-16x16.gif", the graphic that sits next to any threads that have unread messages in them. If the first one it finds is at the bottom of the page source, I know there are no new messages. If it's found earlier, I can see the thread ID just below the one that is found.
Now, I suspect that there could be an easier way to work than this! Is there a built in way in the forum to see just the threads that have new messages, that I haven't discovered? Or could there be such a feature at some future date?

    Hi, Colin -
Is there a built in way in the forum to see just the threads that have new messages, that I haven't discovered?
    Unfortunately, no.
Or could there be such a feature at some future date?
That has been requested several times, and has been responded to by the Hosts that it is on the to-do list. When it might eventuate has not been specified.
What works for me - I habitually visit only about 15 forums; actually, it's 6 category pages, each of which includes between 1 and 5 forums. New replies to topics float those topics to the top of the listings on the lower part of the category pages. Since I visit those categories several times a day, I don't miss any new replies.
I do use the My Posts feature - I go there first, respond to any new replies shown on the first page, and then start travelling category pages. To make it easy I keep links to those 6 category pages in the toolbar favorites in my browser, so any one of them is but a single click away.

  • How to skip to new messages in voicemail

I have saved some old messages in my voicemail. When a new message comes in, I am forced to go through each of those saved messages and resave them before getting to my new messages.
Is there a way to skip to new messages without having to go through old saved messages?

  • Mail: new message window blocks the Mail program

    Hello,
When you write a new mail, the new nice interface makes the window of the new mail appear as it did on the iPad. However, this does not allow you to use the Mail program for other uses: for instance, I used to open the new mail window, and continuously switch to other received emails to re-read while typing the new one or similar.
This is not permitted anymore and the only way I found is to open a new entire mail window, which is not exactly the best solution...
Does anyone know how to make the popup window of the new email "non-blocking"?
I think this is a nice-looking feature but VERY counterproductive.
    Thanks a lot,
    Marco

    Hi Marco,
You can send feedback to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback
As far as I am aware there is currently no way to change the new message overlay in full screen mail.

  • Mail won't download any new messages.

    Updated to 10.6.2 recently.
Today I have noticed that mail, although checking for new mail, doesn't show any new messages. This despite the ping sounding off to indicate new mail.
The only way to see any new messages is to shut mail down and open it back up.

Try this - find the /Library/Preferences folder in your user/Home folder and then locate and delete this file:
    com.apple.mail.plist
*Caution* - doing this may clear your account settings to be sure to note those first in the event you are required to reconfigure, etc.

  • Thunderbird puts a new message at the end of the thread. Is there any way of changing this preference to listing new message at top of the thread?

Thunderbird puts a new message at the end of the thread.
Is there any way of changing this preference so that new messages are displayed at the top of the thread.
This is is more logical. You need to see new message in thread directly, rather than scanning to end of thread to see what is there.

No it is not possible. The newest message is attached to the message it is in reply to.

  • When composing a new message in mail on OS X 10.9.2, is there a way to change the "sending" account on a per-message basis?

I just got a new MacBook Pro and when composing a new message, I can no longer choose which e-mail account I want to use for the new message.  It also does not show which account I'm using in the e-mail composition panel.  Is there a way to fix this?

Click on the pull down window next to From: and you should be able to select the individual account you want to send from.  The account that you want to send from must be an Enabled account in the Account Preferences of Mail.

  • Is there a way to still get audible alerts of new messages without having any banners or text appear in the lock screen?

I'm trying to make sure I am doing this correctly.  How do you set up alerts for both text messages and iMessages so that even when the phone is locked you will still get an audible or vibration alert as soon as the message is received?  And is there a way to do this without having any text appear on the lock screen that shows who the message is from.  My phone stays in locked mode most of the time but I still want to recieve alerts for new messages as soon as they arrive.  I'm also concerned about privacy so I don't want any text or preview or even any information about the sender to appear on the lock screen.  I just want a vibration or audible alert.

Open the Settings app > Notifications > Messages. Scroll down adn turn OFF "View In Lock Screen". You may want to consider setting Alert style to none, but this will not impact what happens when the screen is locked.
