  • Recent Software Update Problem ...

I just finished updating the software for my iBook G4. When the Updater was finished, I couldn't restart! I tried chosing Restart several times, and also Shut Down, but neither function would work.
So, I connect my new external HD, but it didn't show up on the desktop. So I had to press the Power button to shut down, then again to restart.
I don't recall ever seeing this happen before. Is this a bug in the most recent Tiger update?

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions. (Well, the Installer actually uses superuser Permissions to do it's work, but after reboot it doesn't guarantee communication with other existing needed files Permissions.)
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • Recent Adobe Update.

A few days ago, when I turned on my computer and an Adobe update came up so I accepted the update. About half way through the installation my computer screen wigged out and my computer shut down. Ever since this happened, I haven't been able to turn on my own computer!! I get as far as the Windows 7 logo pulsing, and then my computer restarts and says windows failed to start. I managed to access my computer via safe mode, so I uninstalled all adobe software. But I'm still having the same problem! I've tried restoring the computer, backing up the computer, repairing the computer, nothing is working! I'm a little upset since this update was the cause of my computer's issues.. Does anyone know why this happened or how I can fix it?

I happen to have the application and driver recovery dvd, but I can't get the computer to run the dvd. In safe mode, it says my request isn't supported in safe mode, and during start up repair, the computer won't detect the dvd. Any other suggestions?

Informations at boot appear and everything is ok. When shutting down I get a flickering screen, LCD backlight ist constantly turned off and on until the machine shuts down. Same thing if X is started and I am switching to VC1 - screen flickers. Weird thing is: if I switch from X to VC1 the screen flickers, then I switch back to X and again to VC1, now it is gone. I also can see shutdown messages again when shutting down....
It might because I have KMS enabled, so when shutting down it's not flickering, but it's a constantly black screen with an unmovable mouse pointer. I've searched around and didn't find a similar report regarding this problem, maybe we should issue a bug report?
Ok, why not. Never issued a bug report before....:)
Is there any information I can give you for this? I have a Thinkpad SL500, running Arch64...
Do you have the same problems when switching from X to VC1?

  • Recent Fan Update Problems

I recently ran a software update, and there was an update that adjusted the fan on my MBP. Now, each time I turn on my computer, the fan runs constantly... Is anyone else experiencing this? It's really odd to me, and I'm not sure whether this is normal.
Any suggestions on this? Should I worry about it. My computer has never really ran hot before, but now I feel like it's working overtime with this fan constantly running.

Thanks for the iStatPro. I've never used it, but I just downloaded it.
According to iStatPro, my fan speed is from 1998-2004rpm, but that is just for my left fan - my right fan is at 0 rpm... I'm guessing it's broken?
My temps seem pretty hight, as well. I'm not really sure what the average temps are for a computer - I've never really thought about it because my Macs have always just worked... It'd be nice if I could do a screen shot of iStatPro, but here are some examples of temps (they seem a bit outrageous):
    HD: Macintosh: 103 degrees
    CPU: 153 degrees
    AirPort Card: 130 degrees
    Enclosure Base: 88 degrees
    GPU Diode: 151 degrees
    GPU Heatsink: 130 degrees
    Heatsink A: 124 degrees
    Heatsink B: 106 degrees
    Processes:
    Safari: 3.6%
    WindowServer: 9.2% (which I didn't even know I had...)
    BackupD: 2%
Any help on this? I guess one of my fans is broken?
I mainly do web design, and I know how to run the Adobe Suites, but actually having to delve down into my computer's insides - I know nothing about it.
    Thanks again for your help!!!

  • After a recent Adobe update, CS6 will not run on my OSX 10.8

The icon appears disabled.  When selecting the app I get the error msg:  "You can't open the application "Adobe Photoshop CW6.app"  because it is not supported on this type of Mac.
CS6 worked fine after upgrading to Mountain Lion.  It appears an update that I downloaded from Adobe earlier this week could be the cause.

Sounds like something messed up the binary, or the OS settings for the app.
Try reinstalling Photoshop, and deleting ~/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.photoshop.plist

  • Recent Software Update Problem-Graphics

I just updated my software this afternoon and after I restarted my macbook, all drop down menus anywhere, even on web pages do not work. You can click on them but they are not completely visible. You can't read what they say. The software update was for graphics. How do I undo this bad software update?

I assume you attempted shutting the computer down and restarting?
When an update brings problems conventional wisdom is to repair permissions and then download the combo updater from Apple's website and install, rather than allowing the software update program download the update and install it. Don't know if repairing permissions is necessary or not, but the combo updater does solve a lot of ills.

  • Recent iPhone update problem

    Following the iPhone update on April 8, 2011, I found that;
    1) all my email was gone
    2) my iPhone internet settings are gone
    3) I can't access ANYTHING (maps, text, phone, etc.)
    4) all my apps which I downloaded were gone
I weas able to find the apps through trial and error finally
But I hvae an iPhone that I can't use for anything, not even a phone call. People I've spoken with have said that all their updates did not affect anything for them!!!

Use your backup copy of your computer to put everything on another computer and restore your iphone.
Either way you have to restore your iphone.

  • Problem reading PDF files after the latest Adobe update.

Althouigh I think I've followed the Adobe instructions, I continue to get the following error message and can no longer access PDF docs since the most recent Adobe update:
“Before viewing PDF documents in this browser you must launch Adobe Reader and accept the End User License Agreement, then Quit and relaunch the browser”.
And when I try to re-install the reader, my system tells me I already have the latest version of the reader installed...

Uninstall Adobe reader and use Preview instead. Works much better and won't screw up your computer.

  • WiFi Problems - TC to MP, since recent firmware update

    Hello,
i found some threads about other people having trouble here, but nothing seemed to fit my situation.
I have 2 Macs - a Mac Pro (Early 2008) and a MacBook (Late 2008). And a Time Capsule, which i purchased sometime between the Macs. Up to now, everything worked perfect, both machines were connected via WiFi to the TC. But since the recent firmware update, the MacBook works fine with the TC, absolutely no problems, but the Mac Pro (a bit longer distance) doesn't work any longer.
This started on Friday (i don't use the MP daily), it was impossible to get a WiFi connection, tried re-entering connection data and so - no success.
On Saturday, i used the cable to check the TC configuration, everything worked fine, and after fiddling around with the setup, i finally got WiFi working again.
Sunday - MP was off all the day.
Today - Just powered it up, no WiFi. When i disable and re-enable AirPort, it gets a connection for a second or 2, but then drops it. If i get a connection, i have a strong signal (all bars black), so signal quality isn't an issue. And before the update, everything worked fine, the only change is the firmware update last week.
The MacBook doesn't have any issues, no matter, where it is located. I'm currently writing this post on it while syncing some home directory stuff with the MP (MB connected via WiFi, MP connected via cable).
So what is this new problem? After damaging USB to complete unusability, Apple now continues with the WLAN features? What comes next? When will all this be fixed?
Meanwhile, i think it was not the best idea to switch to Apple about a year ago. The continous quality drops get painful meanwhile. I wonder when my iPhone gets unusable (which also works fine with the TC, by the way
    ...Michael

    Hi again,
okay. It really was the 7.4.1 firmware. This morning, i reverted to 7.3.2, did a full reset, reconfigured everything, and now my network works fine as it did before.
It seems to be important to reconfigure the TC, as just downgrading the firmware didn't really help, while full reconfig with 7.4.1 also doesn't help.
I now turned off the automatic search for new versions on the TC. I will be informed by the AP Express, which has no problems with 7.4.1 yet.
Hope, Apple re-introduces quality control soon and doesn't make the customers be the beta-testers.
