A "Router" or a "Switch"..which is best?

I've got to connect my old G4 Powermac to the internet with a Wired connection instead of Wireless.
I plan to connect the G4 to my iMac that has a modem and is already connected to the internet.
The iMac modem has only ONE ethernet port which is already being used by the iMac.
I have been advised to use a router to connect, and another person says use a "switch" to connect.
So, I'm confused as to which one to buy. I figure, since I'm connecting to the internet "Wired" this should probably be an easy internet installation for me.
I"m ready to get this wired internet connection going as soon as I get some informatiion as to wether I should buy the "Router" or the "Switch".

Those terms are often used interchangeably and may refer to the same product; it doesn't really matter which you purchase as long as it's compatible with your setup.

My CCNA expires in October but I will take a CCNP certification exam before then. I currently work in a NOC at a cellphone company but we're not using Cisco equipment. Therefore, my cisco skills are rusty. My question is: Which is the LEAST difficult exam to take, the CCNP route or CCNP switch? I would like to get both but my main objective is to be certified before my CCNA expires in October. Anyone with experience with these exams please help me out!! I plan on enrolling in the morning and want to give myself the best chance for sucess in a short period of time. Thanks!

ROUTE would be your best choice to take first.
I took SWITCH first as I figured I knew more about that than routing at the time. I worked with switches far more than routers but what I did not take into consideration was the routing knowledge you needed to have to pass the SWITCH exam, remember for CCNP think Layer 3 switches...CCNA Layer 2 switches, I did not pass the exam. I was already scheduled to take the ROUTE class the following week after my SWITCH exam, that I thought I would pass, so I switched gears and focused on the ROUTE exam. After the first two days of the ROUTE class I realized what I had messed up on with the SWITCH exam and would have passed it if I had this information. So I would highly recommend taking the ROUTE class and then take the ROUTE Exam. Then go on to the SWITCH after that.
Also the most important thing, go to The Cisco Learning Network website and make sure you review the Exam Topics. Based on the Cisco books and instructors what for the lines that start with the word "Configure", make sure you can configure those topics.

Fusionwolf, can you help me?
I want to use my TFT monitor (HPvs19 ) with a MacMini and a Casablanca KRON PC. The monitor works good with both computers, when connecting them separately.
I've bought a KVM switch MiniView Micro USB Plus (IOGear GCS632U) connected it as written in the IOGear Installation Manual. Now I can use the monitor with my MacMini and my Mac keyboard, but I cannot switch to the PC.
In the IO Gear manual several methods to switch ports are written. But every method starts by invoking HotKey mode.
The manual reads :
"To invoke HotKey mode, do the following:
1. Press and hold down the NumLock key
2. Press and release the minus- key
3. Release the NumLock key"
and
"When HotKey mode is active, the Caps Lock, and Scroll Lock LEDs flash in succession to indicate that Hotkey mode is in effect."
I've tried many times to do this pressing/releasing on my Mac keyboard. Within different time/speeds. But with no result... I CANNOT get in the HotKey mode...
What can I do? Are there other ways to get in HotKey mode with my Mac keyboard (bought with my previous iMac some 4 years ago)? Or are there other ways of switching with the IO Gear KVM Switch?

Router power supply: Switch mode or linear?

I need to replace a failed power supply for a router - which model doesn't really matter but the router is a WRT54GS (12V 1000mA). Which is best - a switch mode or a linear power supply? Will either be just as good? Please only answer if you DEFINITELY know the answer. Cheers, Mike

Frame-relay - config a router as a switch

I am trying to configure a router as a frame-relay switch called R3.
R1 (S0/1) is connected to my Frame-Relay Switch R3 (S1/0). R3 has a further 3 connections (S1/1, S1/2 & S1/3) to R2, R4 &R5. So R1 uses subinterfaces.
I am having problems configuring the switch to say connect R1 to R2.
Here is my R1 config:

It is fine to use subinterfaces on R1 and R2 (in fact it is best practice to use point to point subinterface for Frame Relay). But I do not believe that you can do subintefaces on the router that is acting as the switch. I believe that the key elements of the router as frame relay switch include: frame-relay switching (which you have), Frame-relay intf-type dce (which you have), and Frame-relay route 16 interface s1/1 20 (which you need to add in place of the subinterfaces with DLCI identifier).

Which is best way to back an iMac? I have lots of photos and videos on my iMac TIme Capsule or hard drive. I would like to take photos and videos off my iMac but would easy access to them.

This is totally 100% incorrect. What you described here is more or less Time Machine, not CCC. CCC is a standard backup program. It does not, I repeat, NOT, create incremental dated backups. Under option it just stuffs the files it replaces in a folder.
And you switch what your are taking about halfway through your post to TM.

Should I use a table for thumbnails? [was: Experts, which is best for me?]

on some of the pages on my web-siteI am going to have several (perhaps approx 10 pages) with 12 or 15 thumbnail photos on it.
I am then going to link each thumbnail to another page which will have a larger version of the thumbnail along with a brief description of the photo.
I am hoping to have all pages taken from a template base with just a header and a navigation bar (pop menu magic from PVII). I want to link the pages with the large photo back to the thumbnails page.
Before I start on my site, I would be interseted to find out what some of you experts out there would advise with regard setting my site up.
I know there are horses for courses and many different opinions so i don't think I will get a definitive answer.
My question is, for my type of site as described above, which is best, Tables, div tags or both together. i.e. Div tag for header, div tag for nav bar and a table in a div tag. and your reasons why would be helpful. I know that this has been discussed many times but I want to know answer specifically for my web-site and not which is best generally.
I hope my question is clear enough and thanks in advance for any feedback.

It may sound as if I am being lazy here but is it easy to integrate JAlbum in to my site. Is it a case of copying and pasting or does it entail a lot of knowledge.
I am not really being lazy, I just want to get things moving so that when I get round to building my site, I can keep moving at a steady pace.

not sure what you feel your options are most macbooks pro have a minidisplay port or a thunderbolt port which is the same connector

Over 90% of our orders come in via CRM ISA or EDI.
B/c of the reasons mentioned in the article we use R/3 for entry of the remaining orders as well as order management. Since R/3 was live years before CRM, there are custom exits and fields required that would be an investment to replicate. Changing the plant on the line item is a common occurance for our business. Of the CRM scenarios X,Y,Z we use scenario X where once the order is touched in R/3, R/3 becomes the owner of the order.
Our CRM version just upgraded to 5.0 and our R/3 system is now being upgraded to ECC 6.0. As our do use the IC web client, we are investigating trying to move to the ERP Sales order. The upgrade architecture will also open scenario A where either CRM or ECC could change an order even though X should still support our requirements.

Multiple video players in Java application .... which is best format ?

Hey there
we are working on an application that will allow six video players to run similtaneously in a frame (actually a J Layered Pane) - you can drag these around + rearrange them.
At present we are testing a whole load of different formats + codecs to see which performs best - the piece will end up in a gallery so we need to push quality + resolution as high as possible.
.avi works best so far - using cinepak @ 70% quality .... .mov does not work at all .... does anyone have advice as to the most suitable format ?

Is it possible to sort or filter the switch routes under the switching tab?

In Teststand 3.1, is it possible to filter the switch routes under the switching tab in Action Properties? Since I have a large amount of routes that have been created in Switch Executive, how can I filter out some of the routes from the "Routes to Connect" section?

The TestStand Switching does not provide any inherent filtering capabilities. You do have a couple of options, however.
(1) NI-Switch provides the ability to set up route connections in
different groups. The Switch Page in TestStand allows you to
select Routing groups as well as specific Routes. It may be
easier for you to organize your Connections as groups and choose
between different groups.
(2) The Property page also allows you to build route connection
string and use that string for your Switching actions. It
may be easier for you to build a Route string and easily change that
string rather than selecting your routes everytime from within the
TestStand window.

Trying to connect a wireless router to a switch

We have an 8 port router in the closet(linksys) with the cable connection and in our main room we have a five port 10/100 (By linksys) switch that connects to the system just fine all hardwired, and we have internet already working off of that.
We tried to connect the WRT54G wireless router to the switch because we asked at the store and they said if we had a switch already that's what we'd want. I changed the ip address on the new router to the 192.168.2.1, saved the settings and then tried to plug it into the switch. As soon as we plugged into the switch, anything else connected to the switch stopped getting internet. I also tried to just leave it at the default and same problem. I tried the 'change the IP address to 192.168.1.2 and disable DHCP server and then going into advanced and changing gateway to router and again, same problem. Regardless of what I do anytime I plug that wireless into the switch everything on the switch stops working.
How would we get both the switch and the router to work?

I assume that you want your wireless and your wired computers to all share the same network, and all connect to the Internet through your 8 port router in the closet. And the 8 port router uses the 192.168.1.x address space. --- is that all correct?
If so, disconnect the WRT54G from the rest of your network, then using a computer wired to the WRT54G, do the following:
a) set the "Local IP address" (not the "Internet Connection Type" address) to 192.168.1.2 I am assuming that you are not using this fixed adddress elsewhere in your network.
b) Leave the DHCP server set to "disabled".
c) Wire any port from your 8 port router or switch, to any numbered port on the WRT54G. Do not connect anything to the "Internet" port on the WRT54G.
Note that with this setup, your 8 port router will control your router settings (port forwarding, DHCP server, firewall, etc.). Your WRT54G will only contol your wireless settings.
If you need more help, please state the model of your 8 port router and switch.

Need CISCO switch which support 10 GBPS Traffice

In my data center currently I have 13 servers with Cisco Ethernet switch which supports 1 GBPS network that switch is up-linked with a sonicwall firewall.
We recently bought a new sonicwall firewall which has a two 10GE port.So I am looking now a cisco switch which has at least 16 10GE Fiber ports and one/two 1 GB Ethernet ports.That one 1 GB ports will connect to existing cisco switch and 16 GE FC ports will connect to firewall and as well as all server which I am planning to move one by one as we buy 10 GB supported SFC Network adapter cards for these servers.
Can you guys suggest me a Cisco Switch with 10 GE Fiber supported with 1/2 1 GBPS ethernet.Also if you can suggest me 10 GE Supported SFC adapters for Dell R 710,R720 and IBM x3550,M4 and IBMx3650 M4 servers.
