A scanning question...

Hi, I have borrowed a friends printer/scanner, and hooked it up to my imac. The Imac recognizes it but I was wondering how to get this thing to scan pictures so I can import them into my Iphoto. Do I need the actual software that originally came with the computer or is there an easier way? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Do I need the actual software that originally came with the computer or is there an easier way?
No, but you probably need the disk that came with the printer/scanner. There are so many printers and scanners and they have their specific drivers. That your iMac recognizes the printer/scanner is good.
Look on the printer/scanner company web site and see if there are printer drivers for your version that can be downloaded and installed. That might get everything working for you.

  • Scanning question

I just purchased Elements 8 and am starting to scan in some old photos from a HP photosmart printer.  2 questions for advice.  1) Elements can scan from the printer either by the ip address or the id address with TWAIN.  When the TWAIN address is selected the HP scanning software is used.  Both get my scans to Photoshop, but is one better?  Also, does the dpi of the scan matter?  The HP scanning software defaults to 200 dpi but can go higher.  I am not sure I need this but I am a neophyte as this and want to get it right the first time.  Thanks,

    Hi,
The twain route launches the manufacturer's scanning screen. This has generally customized options for the specific scanner.
Yes, the dpi (resolution) at which you are scanning does matter. The higher the dpi, the larger the file size and generally better the image quality.
200 dpi produces fairly good results. No need to go higher and unnecessarily increase the file size.
    Thanks/Tarun

  • Scanning Question: OCR software, Vuescan

Is there any OCR scanning software for the Mac besides OmniPage?
I'm taking a look at Vuescan for graphics scanning, but I couldn't tell from its web site whether it includes its own OCR program as well. Can anyone who uses it let me know? (I know I can email the developer, but since this is a non-technical question, I thought I'd check here first.)
iMac G5, 17", 1.6 Ghz PowerPC, Combo Drive   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   768 MB RAM, 80 GB HD

Thanks for the reply mreed. I have looked at ReadIRIS Pro on versiontracker. From my research, I see that we Mac owners apparently have only 4 choices for OCR software:
    1. ReadIRIS Pro -- $130.00 (yes, it is rather pricey when I consider that OmniPage SE came with my scanner for free). Ave. user rating on versiontracker -- 1.7 stars (beating OmniPage Pro X by a hair. OmniPage rated 1.6 stars). USER COMMENTS: Quirky, several said it crashes half the time (and not just on Intel Macs) and is very slow. One commenter attributed this to the fact that it's really a Windows program "adapted" for the Mac without a true Mac interface. Pluses: Excellent OCR quality: handles paragraph alignment, font style, and zoning better than Omnipage Pro X (though Omnipage has better OCR proofing).
    2. WorkingPapers ver. 2.2.2 -- $99.00. Ave. user rating on versiontracker -- 3.9 stars. USER COMMENTS: Works with even the oldest scanners, easy to use (virtually no learning curve), and is really the only decent OCR out there for the Mac. Negatives: Doesn't appear to have a demo, there has been no update since 2004, and the recognition of previously scanned TIFFs is poor.
    3. OmniPage Pro X -- $500.00 (gasp!) Ave. user rating on versiontracker -- 1.6 stars. USER COMMENTS: Has not been updated for Mac since 2002.
    4. OCR engine in DevonThink Pro Office -- don't have a price or versiontracker rating. While Devon is a Mac-only company, they didn't develop their own OCR engine. They're using (or will be using?) the IRIS OCR engine. USER COMMENTS: The version of IRIS in DevonThink isn't all that flexible: "You can't pick and choose as you can in ReadIRIS, nor can you tell it what is a table and what isn't - and it's a LOT slower... DevonThink offers no real OCR options other than full automatic."
So, after looking into this, I agree with the consensus that Windows users have a lot more options in the OCR department. One reviewer praised Visioneer PaperPort (now owned by ScanSoft/Nuance, as is OmniPage), which he used to use on his Windows computer, saying it had an intuitive and elegant interface and simple but powerful features that he wishes Mac OCR developers would emulate.
If someone develops a really good full-featured OCR program for the Mac (please ... without the Windows 95-era GUI of OmniPage), that person would make a fortune. I wish someone would invent one that could let me keep behind-text graphics. In OmniPage SE, if graphics are behind text (like a watermark), you can keep one or the other in the finished document, but not both. Adobe Acrobat can turn image-PDFs into text-PDFs AND retain background graphics, but I don't want to pay all that money for it if that's the only purpose for which I'll use it. I guess I'll have to stay with my freebie OmniPage SE for now.

  • Scanning question with the Canon LiDE 110

Hello, I am trying to scan pictures with the Canon LIDE 110 using Photoshop Elements on a PC. The Get Photos/  from Scanner in Photoshop works great when i have the image set to save as a jpg' but when i set preferences to scan in and save the image as a TIFF, I get a message that says "Software for this Device could not be launched. The device is not connected or busy" What can I do to be able to scan in and save a TIFF?
    Thanks, Walter

    Hello wtneary.
Unfortunately, we are not familiar with some of the message you described.
However, our MP Navigator program has the ability to save images in TIFF format.  Please visit the following link to download the program:

  • Photo scanning question: automatic cropping is imprecise?

Hi, I am trying to scan a large body of family photos, and have read a bunch of tutorials on many websites. I bought a Canoscan 8800 scanner for the job.
However, when I scan a photo and set the scan size to either a fixed size (3x5), or even "automatic" the scanned image produces unwanted edges that I will have to manually crop later. Is this normal? Isn't the point of choosing a fixed size or automatic, is that you don't have to re-sized it later?
Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, of if the scanning software or hardware is the issue?
Any help would be appreciated. I don't want to have to manually crop each photo.

    Hi jfk83,
I see you are having some difficulty scanning now since upgrading to Windows 7.
This document explains how to scan in Windows 7. There are multiple ways to scan a photo or document, using either the HP software that comes with your printer, or functionality built into the Windows operating system. This document provides instructions on scanning with either option. -  How to Scan: Windows 7

  • AP invoice scanning question

    Hello all,
We are currently scanning our AP invoices and viewing those AP invoices using a commercial product, Filenet.
We replaced FileNet in a different homegrown system with our own custom code solution and our manager wants us to investigate doing the same thing in SAP.  Is anyone using a home-grown system to associate scanned images with AP invoices?
If this is a fool's errand, I would rather know that early so that I don't waste any time on something that can't or shouldn't be done.

  • General Scanning Question

Not sure this belongs in the Apple forums - don't see a forum here this fits.
I have an older Umax Astra 6450 FW scanner. Seems to do an adequate job, but have noticed from time to time I have to remove the glass bed and clean it. Some how a 'haze' develops on the under side of the glass. Also, I wonder about it's speed when I want a high res photo scan. It's been a while but memory says it can take a minute or longer. Does the cpu have bearing on scan speed? I have pretty much only used Vuescan as my software.
I'm intending to put it (or another scanner) through some grueling paces soon, I would like to scan decades worth of old photos. I hesitate to guess how many, but could be 1000.
Pointers, tips, suggestions .... maybe there's another forum somewhere I should try this?
    Thank you

It only supports Mac OS 9 which won't run on a MacBook Pro, and Windows XP, which will during Boot Camp. If you are going to make thousands of scans, you would do well to find a compatible feeder scanner, if you can find one that keeps the photos flat. Epson makes a few that might work.
Pardon me, but I don't know what 'It' are you referring to? It - the scanner and It - the software (Vuescan) work fine on my MBP 10.5.6
Please, I did a quick google search of 'feeder scanner' and didn't learn much. Could you expound a bit on why you suggest the feeder type? Is it a speed issue, quality issue??
    Thank you for the reply.
I just did a sample scan at 300 dpi and it took about 20 - 30 seconds (got distracted as it finished).

  • Dell MFP 3115cn printing info and scanning question

I just wanted to let everyone know that there is a printer driver available for this printer from Dell's site.
It worked with Leopard & Snow Leopard.
For scanning, I have no idea how to get that to work with Leopard or Snow Leopard.
Does anyone know how to get the scanning to work between Mac OS X & Dell MFP 3115cn?

Dell presumably used the engine of another manufacturer for their printer. Find out what printer's engine they used, and you may be able to find comparable drivers to work with it. For printing, see my FAQ*:

    Hi guys.
I am trying to get this HP OfficeJet J6480 working - and am running into the same problems I had with my last HP Printer.
I have it Wirelessly networked into my Airport Extreme via USB from the back of the printer.

  • Security scanning - question about Windows service

    Hello,
As part of our internal security requirements all new servers are being scanned by a Nessus engine before being released to production.  My two new Lync FE servers have been tagged with having a high-level vulnerability.  See below.  It calls
out the Windows Identity Foundation service as having an 'unquoted service path' in the registry.
Before I comply with trying to 'fix' this 'vulnerability', I was wondering if anyone else runs similar internal security...and if so, have you successfully 'fixed' something like this.  I'm a little reluctant to go mucking about in the registry to modify
this 'service path' to include quotes.
Thanks in advance for any advice/replies.  vulnerability data below:
445/tcp 63155 - Microsoft Windows Unquoted Service Path Enumeration [-/+] Synopsis The remote Windows host has at least one service installed that uses an unquoted service

    Hi,
Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet forums.
This can be a false alarm from the Nessus product. We can reinstall WIF 3.5 to see if the issue can be fixed. We can also try contacting the manufacturer/support of the Nessus product regarding this issue.

  • WSUSSERVICE.EXE Path White Space Question

Our security scanner is reporting that two services installed on our Server 2012 server is a potential security risk. The two services are:
    WSUSService.exe - Path: %ProfileFiles%\Update Services\Services\WsusService.exe
    WSusCertServer - Path: %ProfileFiles%\Update Services\Services\WSusCertServer.exe
The following specific references are provided supporting this position:
    CVE-2013-1609

    CVE-2014-0759
Is my scanner correct that these are vulnerabilities because the service paths are not quoted, or is this not really an issue for these specific services?
The following additional information was provided by the scanner:
Synopsis: The remote Windows host has at least one service installed that uses an unquoted service path.

    Description

The remote Windows host has at least one service installed that uses an unquoted service path, which contains at least one whitespace. A local attacker could gain elevated privileges by inserting an executable file in the path of the affected service.
Note
that this is a generic test that will flag any application affected by the described vulnerability.

    Solution

Ensure that any services that contain a space in the path enclose the path in quotes.

    Hi,
Based on my research, we can solve this issue by adding quotation marks at each side of the services path in Registry.
You can find the service in registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services, after that, you can expand the ImagePath then add quotation marks.
