A script or terminal instruction for modifying download finder window?

Sometime back, somewhere, someone posted something that made it possible to view the downloads window with "date downloaded" replacing "date modified." When I open that window I want to look at recent downloads. The modification date of the app I've downloaded is less relevant to me than WHEN I downloaded it. This was a great little addition. Now I can't find it. Has anybody seen it anywhere?

I'm not trying to be troublesome. Just trying to get an answer. My downloads folder ~downloads doesn't empty, because I don't want it to. I downloaded a widget yesterday. ( iPhone_Linkpad.wdgt.zip ) In ~Downloads it shows as "Date created is Aug 6 2009", "Date modified, ditto"
I had forgotten its name and couldn't find it in my downloads folder. If the date of the download was showing there, I could have found it. Fortunately it was still showing in Safari's downloads screen (which does empty).

How to make default settings for a new Finder window ?

Will, i am abit ashamed to ask this question cause it's problaby very basic OSX knowledge.
However, since using 10.0 , i never have find a solution ..
What i want is this:
EVERY new Finder window i open, be it with the keycommand (CMD)+N, or double clicking a Folder a disk icon, has to be shown to me in only 1 way
which i have setup beforehand.
I am talking bout: List view only, with specified columns ("date added" for example etc) in a vast specific order.
For these settings, i open one finder window, setup the "view options" for that window, re-arrange the columns, then do: save as default"
Now, i would say that next time i open a new finder window, (keycommand (CMD)+N, or double clicking a Folder a disk icon), it defaults to the settings i made above.
But nada.
OSX has always intuitive for me but this issue scratches my brains.
Can someone please help ??

Even the order of the columns is retained
However, i wish the (CMD)+J settings would apply for ANY Finder window you open, not just ones that are in the same directory.

How do I erase history of file use in "search for" sidebar in finder window

I just upgraded to Leopard and noticed that the "search for" sidebar in the finder window reveals every file I've ever opened in the past. I know I can turn it off in the finder preferences but I prefer being able to erase the history. I can't find an option to erase my file use history in the system or finder preferences. What can I do? I'm a stickler for privacy and don't like to keep this info on my computer no matter how innocuous or inoffensive the files might be. (Please spare me the inevitable jokes about hiding dirty pictures or videos... It's not that.)

I am not sure there is any point because anyone can do a search in the finder for everything you have opened in the last whatever time period.

Make bootable CD instructions for Sol8 download

I would like to confess to this forum that I am another one of the numbskulls who is unable to make the CDs from the images.
I tried to make the CDs by following the instructions at http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/binaries/instructions.html. As instructed, I also followed the instructions in EZ CD Creator to make bootable CDs. I wound up with many CD-Rs that could boot Win98 and prepare me to troubleshoot a faulty C:\ drive, leaving me at the A: prompt.
But thanks to Allan of Sun Develloper Support, it seems that contradictory to the explicit instructions at the URL above, we must not create bootable CDs since the .iso images themselves are bootable.
I get the feeling that making the CDs is just the easy part in the installation;its after now that the real headaches begin...

Well, working in the MS world, it's been a while since I had Macs to troubleshoot, I did not know about the GUID partition setup, so thanks for that.
I finally sorted thru a bunch of IDE's and setup a fixit drive. I used a cheap SATA/IDE combo drive adapter. now I can go thru drives including the 2.5" ones at leisure 8^)
Am fat and happy on the DW front. I never used to have only one drive on any Mac, either, for exactly the same reasons listed here.
Now I have to see if the spinning pizza wheel is still a problem. I ran top on the terminal. mds, fsevents, and directory services want to take turns being stuck, but not all the time. Seems good as I write this.
Will update on that problem after I run some music for a while

In the search window that opens when you go to File > Find, how do I save changes I make to the search parameters? I want the same settings every time that window pops up. Is this possible? Thanks.

JSF error message: Automatic prompting for file download

This is a weird problem. I have a JSF application wherin I popup a new window on a submit button.
The window opens a test.jsf page that redirects the output to a servlet1.
Servlet then based on some parameters does a sendRedirectI() to different servlets out of context.
Now the issue is that when the output is redirected to out of context servlet, that returns a file download.
If in IE browser, if one does not do a setting of "Automatic prompting for file download", this window that I had opened on submit buttton vanishes in a jiffy. If the IE setting is done, it shows the file download correctly.
I would want to show the user some kind of message by which he/she understands that this IE setting has to be done.
I have tried several ways:
1. Javascript: window.onbeforeunload on the test.jsf so that when the window unloads i can show some message. But since test.jsf forwards to servlet1, the html page generated does not show my script.
2. I also tried checking if some windows registry can help me understand the setting.
3. I tried writing in response object the javascript and then redirecting it to servlet out of context. But I guess sendRedirect() does a new request, so this did not help.
Can anyone help? I am not sure if I am able to explain my problem correctly.

Here is the result.I used your code and it worked fine with IE setting Enabled. But when I tried to access the download servlet after opening a new window, it doesnt download the file.

"Check for available download" "itunes store unavailable"

Every time I click on "Check For Available Downloads" A window pops up telling me to check back later because iTunes store is temporarily unavailable. Though I can go in and buy stuff off iTunes still but I can't download it. My connections and everything are fine and I have run all my diagnostics and they've passed. This has been happening for months and nothing has worked. This isn't only happening on my Mac but also on my PC's.

I know exactly what happened. You had an old download in your queue that wasn't fully downloaded that became unavailable. This same thing happened to me (no problem if i let things fully download in one sitting--just couldn't check for available downloads) and the apple techs could give me no answers for a very long time. Finally, one tech went in and analyzed all my purchased items and found I had some freebie tv show in my queue that I'd never allowed to fully download. It was no longer available and was causing an error. The program was removed from my queue and everything I'd lost for weeks immediately started downloading from the point I'd lost it. Write to iTunes help and SPECIFICALLY ASK them to check this, explaining that you've done everything else possible to try to fix it.

To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

Auto-close "Downloads List" window?

Is there a way for the "Download List" window to automatically close when a download is complete? I have it set so that items are automatically cleared from the window when the download is complete, but would like the window to close as well rather than just sitting there empty. (Disabling it altogether might be OK too, I find with a fast connection most of the things I download might only take a second or two, so there's no need to really monitor their progress).

I don't think you can turn this window off.
One alternate use for the window aside from monitoring downloads is that if you click on the magnifying glass icon next to the item's name, you can have it revealed in the Finder. Handy if you don't want to bother clicking to find the item, Safari/the Finder will take you right to it!
(of course to use this feature you would have to change preferences so that the window wasn't cleared automatically.)

I need "dummies" instructions for someone who does not have much computer knowledge. I managed to download one video, but not another one. I have looked on line for instructions, and cannot find any, so I don't know if I am using the addon correctly. I do not understand the things in the "conversion tool" area. What I want to do is download videos to my computer to then convert and burn them to a dvd to play on my tv. Maybe I need a different addon, but how do I choose from all the ones that are offered?
