A set of configurable adjustment brushes

I would like to have a set of 6 adjustment brushes that I could configure individually then assign it to one of the 6 brushes in the set on the tool bar.

>This issue related to Lr2.0 and 2.1, it was fixed in Lr 2.2
Wish you were 100% correct but alas not so for me and apparently others. Please read my latest post (#34) here for some helpful details:
http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b74b5a/33
While my machine may be considered "dated" and perhaps mocked by some, it was considered a hot (Asus) board in it's day with Intel 875 chipset, 3.0 Ghz Intel processor, Asus (NVidia) N6800 video card w/512 MB RAM, Promise RAID for both IDE and SATA, 3 GB RAM, etc., etc. running on Win XP Pro SP3. Built her myself and saved big $$.
>The fact that the OP is having Camera Raw crash Photoshop is a REAL GOOD indication his computer has some serious problems
Maybe, but this issue is clearly an Adobe problem (Windows for sure)and is complicated by the many software/hardware factors, as well. Simply blaming one's hardware doesn't help solve the problem any more than someone ranting about Adobe's alleged incompetence. As you can see from my above referenced post, there is an issue with ACR (and CS4) albeit a relatively minor one (for me) involving a bit o' lag. Strangely enough, the ol' box seems to outperform many newer multi cores for some reason (Vista?) and overall I'm very happy with ACR and CS4 (next machine will likely be a Mac, though). LR needs more help if I'm to keep it beyond the trial period. Too bad, 30% off with free shipping from Adobe seemed to be a pretty good deal.

  • Continual problem with the Adjustment brush in both Lightroom 3 and Lightroom 4

The Adjustment brush in both Lightroom 3 and Lightroom 4 continually stops functioning correctly - that is any adjustment made using the sliders in the Adjustment Brush panel does not make an adjustment on the image.      Normally I would go to Library / Preferences [on my iMac OSX 10.6.8], remove the com.adobe.Lightroom3.plist file and restart Lightroom.     However I have gone to Library/Preferences and there is no listing of any Lightroom 3 plist files, nor for that matter any adobe Photoshop CS5 plist files or any adobe Lightroom 4 plist files.      I have tried restarting the iMac but to no avail - no help at all!      I have no idea how to remedy the situation as I have no idea where the plist files have gone!!!
Incidentally I have a new iMac 27" OSX 10.8 - same problem with the Adjustment Brush there, but so far the plist files haven't disappeared into the ether somewhere!
    Help would be appreciated  ...
    Many thanks

    Hi Jussi
I tried changing to the B brush set, and the Adjustment Brush worked OK in there for a while - but now I have the same problem with the B brush set too.     It appears to happen instantly - one minute they're working, the next minute they're not!!         For example, I was adjusting Brightening using the Adjustment Brush and I literally made an adjustment on one image, then went back into the same image seconds later to make a further Brightening adjustment and the brush wasn't working - well, that is, not unless I pushed the slider to something like 160 and then I got minimal adjustment!!!       I am becoming increasingly frustrated  ..   I have literally worked for months with no problems, now it's almost every day!!

In Camera raw setting of CS6, using the adjustment brush, the new, add or erase buttons do not work. Please advise.

What operating system are you using?
Which version of camera raw do you have in photoshop cs6?
After you select the Adjustment Brush, the New button should already be enabled.
Then after you draw on an area of the image, the Add button should be enabled, with the option to choose either of the other two buttons; New or Erase
    Could you post a screenshot?
Maybe all the adjustment values are set to zero?
(at least one needs to have a value other than zero)

  • Adjustment brush with exposure setting cancels noise reduction

    Hello,
I just noticed the following problem:
    1) Camera Raw 6.5; Bridge CS5 (4.0.5.11); Mac OS X 10.6.8; Mac Pro 3,1; Dual Quad-Core Xeon; 8GB RAM.
    2) Start with a noisy raw file (mine is from a Canon 5D II).
    3) Apply Noise Reduction (Luminance:30; Lum Detail:75; Lum Contrast:0; Color:25; Color Detail:50).
    4) Go to Adjustment Brush and set a non-zero Exposure value.
    5) Apply brush to image and notice the Noise Reduction effects disappear (noise returns).
    6) Click Clear All button to clear Adjustment Brush and Noise Reduction works again.
This seems to only happen with Adjustment Brushes with a non-zero Exposure value (applying brightness or other settings don't seem to produce the problem).
    Anyone else seeing this?
    Thanks!

    Richard (and others),
Yes, very good idea to check that. The problem does indeed get applied to the full sized, opened image as well as to the display previews. After working with this more, I now notice that I was wrong to say that the entire noise reduction is cancelled - rather it "changes", sometimes subtly, sometimes more dramatically depending on what the noise reduction settings are set to. Further, how dramatic the "changes" appear depend greatly on the preview zoom (the changes are more subtle at 100%, but it can look like the noise reduction is completely turned off at 50% and 66%).
Now I realize that the noise reduction does not ordinarily display at all preview sizes (especially smaller ones), but this is different. At preview sizes where it does normally get applied, applying an adjustment brush with any non-zero exposure value (even just +0.05) can have the appearance that the NR is completely turned off for the whole image. Simply nudging the exposure value back to zero brings all the noise reduction back.
Also, to be clearer and avoid confusion for others, the change in noise I'm seeing is not localized to just the brushed spot. Obviously if one increases exposure, you'd expect to potentially see more noise. Instead, what I'm seeing happens to the entire image, even if I simply paint a single small brush dot, say in a far corner. Having the image change globally in response to painting a small spot with the adjustment brush cannot be a correct result. Further, this does not happen with any of the other adjustment brush settings like brightness, contrast or saturation. There must be something unique about the exposure setting that perhaps introduces a new step into the processing pipeline, and this step is affecting the entire image.
In any case, the problem only seems to be an issue in somewhat extreme cases and is less noticeable at 100% (and the finally opened image). It's more just annoying when previews are generated for viewing in Bridge, for example.
I suppose one alternative might be to rob a bank and go buy one of those new 1D X's. Then maybe I wouldn't have to worry about noise anymore.
    Thanks for the responses!

Recently downloaded a trial version of CC and when trying to use the Adjustment Brush in ACR it brings up the message 'All the local adjustment controls are set to have no effect on the image'. I've downloaded this as an update to CS5 on my new i Mac. Would appreciate suggestions to remedy this. Rhonda

I think it means "the sliders are all 0 so painting adjustments with this brush won't change anything."  In other words, move one of the sliders to a non-zero position, for example Exposure from 0 to 1.0, and then see what happens.  You can edit the brush and change it to do something other than Exposure +1.

  • Adjustment Brush Slider setting defaults.

I notice that even with the Basic Panel sliders  all centered at 0; when selecting the Adjustment Brush the sliders are set at some "pre-determined" value.
Example: I opened an image in ACR7, and all the Basic Panel sliders except the  Temp & Tint  are centered at "0" which makes sense.
When I select the Adjustment Brush the Temp & Tint are at "0", Exposure is at +4.00, Highlights at -61, Shadows at +100 & Clarity at +36; and that seems to be the default for every file opened.
What's with the program making pre-determined settings?  I would have thought they'd default at "0" like the Basic panel?

While you can use the Preview in ACR, it "turns off" any corrections previously applied in the Basic Panel and is, therefore, most useful only if the Adjustment Brush is used prior to any adjustments in the Basic Panel.
I may be misunderstanding what you meant by this, but on its plain meaning it seems wrong.
Assuming you are in the Adjustment Brush panel, toggling the Preview just turns off/on the edits made only in that panel - any edits made in the Basic Panel (or any other panel for that matter) remain visible. It would be quite pointless if they did not.
The only panels in which you can turn off the edits made in other panels are the Presets and Snapshots panels, and there, when you toggle the Preview, its turns off/on all the edits made in all the other panels.
Correction: Just did a test and found that toggling the Preview in Presets/Snapshots does not turn off/on local edits made with the Adjustment Brush.

  • Adjustment Brush is painting bright red when it is set with saturation at -100

Anyone have any idea why it is not removing the color like I am asking to program to do?

So it turns out that the exposure was also turne down to -4 and I missed this.  Sometimes the answer is right in front of your face but I had
double clicked effect numerous times but somehow this was part of the problem.
I think inially I had the Brush overlay on (which I never use) and then after about an hour of fiddling around I posted the question.
You hit the nail on the head with the Overlay but then when I must have reacctivated the adjustment brush I must have some home
turned the exposure down to -4 and thus when I turned off the overly it was coming up as black.
thank you for all of your help.  I have used LR since 2005 and this really rattled my cage.
    Cheers

  • Override preset setting with adjustment brush?

I used Creative B&W low contrast preset to give an image my neighbor's white cat a high key B&W look. I would like to use the adjustment brush to restore the color of the cat's eyes. I thought raising saturation would do the trick as the preset reduces the saturation to 0. Using the adj brush doesn't seem to do anything to the cat's eyes.
You can see the image here..
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    LR 2.4

At a guess , the preset may also have switched theTreatment to B&W, in which case the saturation in a brush will have no effect. You would have to do this the other way around and brush on the de saturated parts of the image. Or take the easy way out and use PS and masks and layers.

Had you specified you're on Windows, I wouldn't even have replied. I don't do windows.
Yes, it has been a waste of time for both you and me.
You don't even know how to ask a question properly and you want me to read the FAQs?  Hah!
No one will take your word for "ACR latest version", and "PS CC latest VersionVersion [sic]", as many users believe they are fully updated when they are not. Exact version numbers are needed.
8 GB is considered the realistic minimum to run Photoshop CC, but it's far from optimal—on any platform.  There are other factors that can be at play and which you don't specify, such as the space available on each of your hard drives, whether you have a physically separate, dedicated hard drive for Photoshop's scratch drive, what video card you have and how much VRAM does it have, what your graphics settings are in Photoshop's Preferences > Performance, etc.
That's why I had indicated a link for you to read:

  • HELP! Lightroom Crashes Only with Adjustment Brush and only when using HDMI output!

This is very frustrating. I use my Acer N56V laptop to teach Lightroom workshops. I use a 32 inch television as a display. When I have my laptop attached with an HDMI cable and try to use Lightroom's adjustment brush, it crashes. Either the screen and computer just shuts down or I get the Blue Screen of Death. I can do anything else! I can edit in Photoshop, do anything else in Lightroom or even Silver EFX Pro. I can even click on the adjustment brush. But the minute the brush hits the photo (and not before), the computer crashes. If I don't have it attached to the HDMI or if I use a Serial cable, no issues. It's only the adjustment brush and only the HDMI output.
I called Adobe and they said it was because my onboard video card was primary and not the Nvidia. I called Acer and they said it's auto detect. I also tried making the Nvidia card primary and it still happened. Any ideas???

You have switched the overlay mask to always show. Fortunately, it's easy fixed i.e. tap the O key. Shift+O will cycle the overlay through various colours
Other Adjustment Brush and Graduate Filter shortcuts and modifiers are listed them below:
    Open Adjustment Brush - K
    Open Gradient Tool - M
    Show/hide Pin - H
    Always Show - Shift + Cmd/Ctrl+H
    Show Selected/Never Show - Shift+H
To increase Amount - Right Arrow
To decrease Amount - Left Arrow
    To increase/decrease brush size -  ] / [
    To increase/decrease feather - Shift+] / Shift+[
Set Flow Amount - Number Keys
To commit  and/or start new a brush stroke or gradient - Enter / Return
To delete the selected pin - Delete
Holding down - Alt/Option key activates erase mode
    Toggle Auto Mask On/Off - A
Pressing O toggles on/off the overlay
Shift+O cylces through alternative colours for overlay
To constrain gradient to vertical/horizontal  - hold down Shift plus drag
To invert the gradient - '
To scale from center - Alt/Option plus drag

  • Adjustment brush changes can't be undone in Camera Raw?

I worked on a RAW file in Camera Raw (Leica M9, DNG), changing various settings and correcting various areas with the Adjustment brush. When I come back to the file, I can re-modify all the settings, except in the Adjustment brush mode, where it only seems possible to create a new adjustment zone.  "Add", "Erase" and "Clear All" are all greyed out.  Does anyone know how I can undo the changes that I made a couple of weeks ago?  It looks like they've been made permanent, but it's not supposed to be like that with RAW files.
    Many thanks for your help.

Can you, from within Photoshop, choose File - Open As, then choose the TIFF file, and set the selector over on the right to Camera Raw?
I know that you'd really like to set up to open them automatically through Camera Raw, but this could serve as a workaround.

  • CS4 raw editing, global adjustments versus useing "Adjustment Brush"

I had made a post earlier about CS4's raw editor hanging when working on .cr2 files ( canon). It seems that the raw editor works fine when makeing global adjustments, but when using the adjustment brush to make selective adjustments the program hangs for extended times. A global brightness adjustment will go thru in a couple of seconds at most, where as a photo with a few selective adjustments made to it will hang for as long as 5 minutes or more. Moving the image around is fluid when dealing with a image that does not have selective adjustments, and hangs when dealing with an image that has selective adjustments. The program seems set up to make selective adjustments ( it does have a selective adjustment brush after all ) but useing that option seems to cause such massive problems that it is un usable. The raw editor seems to use 50 to 100% of the proccesor during the hang time, and there is no disk activity which leads me to believe that there is not a problem with not haveing enough ram.
I would appreciate any help that can be given with this problem

First off let me say thank you for your responce.  But if what I have been doing is
    selective tone adjustments, not HDR
That doesn't change the fact it would be a feature that can enhance the image process none the less.
But not all the images I process are single shot images... I actually take time to scout a spot. Then I take about 3-4 shots at different exposures. Go into Camera Raw and and make different versions(snapshots) of those images.  Then create a document for each of those (snapshots) Then I open in a HDR program... NOW Photoshop HDR... and process them. The effect is different than the normal way of converting images into HDR... I think even more precise, or at least in my opinion.  So creating a feature like this will give the user the ability to streamline the workflow.
So much of what you described doesn't belong in the HDR plugin, but is already available as tools in ACR or Photoshop itself.
But what about the HDR adjustment brush tool I suggested?  That really sounds like a good possibility that people would like to utilize when creating HDR images.

  • LR5 's Adjustment Brush doesn't seem to work-does the New Radial Filter have priority?

So why in the world would I update Lightroom in the middle of a job.?
Before I was able to do in and touch up shadowy areas using (K) adjustment brush, but now it doesn;t seem to work. The radial brush does a good job for a defined area but for SPOT touching I have always used the the adjustment brush?
Is there a setting or am I missing something or is this a bug?

The presence of the Radial Filter in the tool set should have no effect on the Brush. It continues to work just as it always has. In fact, even if the RF is open (I sometimes hit it by mistake when I really want the Brush) and you click on the Brush icon, the RF closes and the Brush opens. If your Brush is not functioning properly, it is very unlikely that the RF is the reason. The usual first aid for any LR misbehavior is to close LR, remove the Preferences file from its folder and relaunch LR, allowing it to make a new preferences file. Not guaranteed to solve the problem, but worth trying.

  • Unable to add further Edits using Adjustment Brush in Lightroom 5.

Using Lightroom 5 - when I go back to a previously edited image to do further editing, using the Adjustment Brush, I open the effect that I want to use ( Dodge, for example) but all the sliders are inoperative. The word 'Dodge (Edited)' appears in the Effects header. Therefore I can't make any further changes to the image. I have opened the drop down Effects menu and ticked 'Restore default presets' but to no avail. Any solutions welcome.

Thank you for that trshaner. The density was set at 100 but flow only 86. I've shoved that up to 100 now and I think we may have a result!
    Thanks again.
