I detest gentoo.
I used it for a while, and I will admit that emerge is the coolest thing since the keyboard.... however, the thing sucks ass on finding people who are familiar with it. Installing it takes so long I have time to eat, shower 'n shave, lounge, eat again, sleep a bit, etc etc etc. before it is done. It is also the most finicky POS I've ever had to deal with.
My two personal favorites thus far are arch and slack. Clean, fast, no-nonsense distros that get the job done. I will also admit that I have done better on uptime with slack than arch, but I'm blaming that on a few weeks of arch experience and about two years of slackware experience.
I'm surprised that OpenBSD didn't get a mention for the "other" category. It has the coolest packet filtering ever, and makes a superb router.

  • Short list of some vendors supporting XMP

I am working on getting a list of vendors that support XMP together - below is a short list of vendors with mostly "off the shelf" products.
There are of course larger asset management vendors such as IBM, Media Bank, etc. that support XMP - working on getting that together.
I thought this might be helpful regarding some questions I was hearing regarding search etc.
Please post info on other vendors as you find them.
    Thanks,

  • My bookmarks will not "sort" on one list, instead they make a short list right before the main list, so how do I get them to all go into the same list?

When I put my bookmarks in "Bookmarks Menu", and sort them by "name", there is a short list of alphabetized names, then the main list of alphabetized names. They are all in the "Bookmarks Menu" file, but won't merge, for some reason. It is as if they were in a separate file, but they aren't. I might be able to move them manually, by dragging them, but that is a major inconvenience. I usually rename the individual sites, so I can remember them, but that seems to make no difference, as all the main list will alphabetize with no problem....

Thanks for the response, cor-el....Seems like I've seen your name and help on the Secunia forum, maybe? And it does seem like I have a separator, but that is not the case. After opening the manager, and all bookmarks, the "Bookmarks Menu", by double clicking, shows 4 separators, and the fourth section has two alphabetized lists, (without a separators) The first list is about thirty, and the second list of all the rest, 100+. I've looked all through the two referrals you mention, and nothing fits. I just downloaded the "SortPlaces" add-on and will see if that works out just to get around the "short list" that tends to throw me off in looking up bookmarks in the main (longer list). Thanks for your suggestions, I will let you know how it works out, but tonite I am ready for the sack....manana..
PS. I am including a screenshot that shows how it is organized, with the short list on the top, and the start of the "A's" on the longer list....(couldn't get any more on the page for the screenshot)

  • A Linux distro that teaches the user as he/she navigates?

Hi, I was wondering about this idea I had about making a Linux distro that teaches users how to use the desktop while teaching them the fundamentals of Linux, like installing packages. It would a noob distro. So I wanna get ideas laid out and see what you guys think.
I think Gnome would be a good environment. Nothing would be modified, just a default Gnome with all the fixin's, a bootsplash to cover up the boot menu, and an easy to follow GUI installer. When the user logs in the first time they'll hear a voice helping them out (along with captions that can be turned on or off). The tutorial can be turned on or off. Basically it guides the user and instructs him/her to open/close windows, drag and drop, chinge window geometry, minimize/maximize, create shortcuts, open programs, navigate filesystem(as well as mount/unmount, and teaching the purpose of the different directories), browse the internet, setup email, and install a program using some kind of GUI package manager. There might be more, like tutorials for OpenOffice or Abiword, the Gimp, and other miscellaneous programs.
I also need a name, so I welcome any suggestions!

I think this is a good idea. But I agree with Varreon that it should be a tutorial program instead, if that tutorial prgramm is good you can build a distribution tailored specifically for this program later on.
I disagree that Flash video tutorials are sufficient for new Linux users. There are people who really want to learn something about their system and the philosophy behind it. Such a tutorial could explain basic concepts about free software and where to get help (point to relevant manpages and wikis). I really like the tutorial that pops up when wmii starts for example. I would have had no clue what to do without it and it basically showed me the beauty of tiling window management. That's what such a tutorial program should be IMHO, just a starter that shows you how to do basic operations and where to learn everything else that is needed. Often the users want to learn about their system, they just don't know how. Maybe the program could even include a selection of recommended packages for simple Distros like Arch. In my opinion Arch is a great starting distro for people who want to learn about Linux but have never used it before (or have just a bit of experience with other Distros). If everything goes well, they have a working base system, but they don't know which apps are good. The wiki lists a few recommendations, but not all of them are simple and you really have to find the wiki page and test them out. Why not something like "Arch Linux is designed to be simple. While it is possible to use a full-featured Desktop Environment like Gnome or KDE, we recommend to use simple applications. An example setup would include: Transmission as torrent client, Xchat as an IRC client, etc,". I think that would be really helpful for users that want a simple yet easily usable system.

  • IPhone 3G displays shorter list of WiFi compared to iPod touch 1st Gen

If you turn on the WiFi on the iPhone 3G and compare it to the iPod touch 1 Gen, you will see a much much shorter list of available networks.
I noticed that with the new iPod touch as well (short list).
And if you compare the new Late 2008 MacBook/Pro's with the previous MacBook/Pro's you will notice the same thing (the newer ones don't pick up as many wireless signals).
Is this a software thing, or a hardware problem?

There is no such message when 1st gen iPod Touch sits on top of iPod Hi-Fi, it simply does not charge without any explanation.
With 2nd gen Touch they changed the insides of the device, thus excluding compatibility, but the 1st gen remains the same — and now it doesn't work properly with Apple's own accessory which was compatible just days ago.
That's a crying shame, really. I hope that Apple is aware of the situation and currently works to fix this problem.

  • Right mouse button - short list

    Hello,
I have got Apple MacBook Pro 13.3” (ME865LL/A) witch OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 and I’ve noticed that when I click right mouse button on the desktop or in the Finder I’ve got very short list. There is only „New Folder/Catalog (I don’t know how it calls in english cuz I have polish version but I hope that you know what I’m talking about)” and „Information”. I remember that previously I had more things there and I don’t know what I’ve done that this things have disappeared. It is worth noting that I use „Total Finder” but when I turn it off the problem does not disappear.
Below - how it looks like. On the top "New Folder" and on the bottom "Information". There's no more things.
Have someone ever come up against this kind of problem?
    Patrick B.

I've just figured it out! TotalFinder causes that these things disappeared from context menu and there left only 2 things. But why? How Can I configure TotalFinder to have more position to choose.

  • Is there a way to create a smart playlist that lists my top 25 plays from a specific time period (i.e. - top plays from the last 90 days)?

Is it possible to create an itunes smart playlist that lists my top 25 most played songs in a specific time period (i.e. - the last 90 days)?  It seems that any "most played" list I create counts every spin a track has had in it's history of being in my library.

The challenge is is not to determine which of the tracks that have been played in the last X days has been played most since the beginning of time, but which have been played most in the last X days. iTunes can do the first one but it simply doesn't have the power to do the second.

  • Which Linux Distro Works Out of the Box With the iMac late 2009 (11,1)?

Hi. I use all 3 OSes because the other two OSes have tool and games that are not yet in OS X; best of both worlds. Win 8 on Bootcamp is nice for games and utilities but I'm installing Linux too on a separate external drive. I've tried a lot of Linux distros but they all have the bug that prevents ths iMac 4850 mobility GPU to work (you need a second monitor to solve it which I don't have the space for and I only use Linux every so often) but have you tried a Linux distro Live CD/DVD that works flawless on this Mac without editing commands in Linux's GRUB console on Linux bootup?
If there's no distro that works out of the box, what's the closest distro that may only need a few adjustments on its boot menu (GUI preferably not console commands).
But if there's a distro, what's the distro name and exact version (link to download it too if it's alright with you)?
    Thank you in advance.
    God bless.

Hi, and thanks for you interest. The problems is that whether I'm using iMovie or FCE I get to a stage where the thumbnail image is present but if you try to play, import or any other action in either app it closes down and a message comes up " The Application Final Cut Express/iMovie quit unexpectedly - Mac OS X and other application are not affected" then asks if I wish to relaunch. I then hit the report to Apple button and afterwards relaunch. I was recommended to use Voltaic which I have tried, it worked but is to much mucking about for something that should work out of the box.
This problem happens on both the iMAC and the MacBook so quite sure it's not a OS software issue. All software update are up to date also.
    Any ideas?

I was in the Reader forum and needed to take a look at a

I opnened the wrong message on page 2, and tried to go back to the list of topics using the "Back to Reader Discussions" button, which worked. But the list of Top Participants had changed to this:
And it went back to "normal" on reentering the Reader forum using my bookmark.
Addition: I have tested in other forums and I get the same expansion of the list on going back. And the button I'm using is the "Up to Discussions In XXXXX" one near the top.

Noel, as you say, both of these two links take me to the main page of this forum, with no list of top participants:
However, if I open any thread in the list and then go back using the "Up to Discussions in..." button near the top of the page, then I get a list of Top Participants, plus a list of Popular Discussions:
This is the problem I have been trying to report in this thread: what one gets on going directly to a forum is not the same one gets when going back using the "Up to..." button. And for me, the problem is platform and browser independent: I get the same results using Mac/Firefox and Win/Explorer. And it happens in any of the forums I have tested.
I hope to have explained myself clearly this time.

  • Should I use the 64 bit or 32 bit Linux distro for Oracle Service Bus

I'm going to install OSB for the first time on Oracle Linux 5.3 for development use. Does it matter whether I install OSB on the 32 bit or 64 bit version of Oracle Linux?
I've had better luck with 32 bit Linux distros in the past, but if there's a benefit to using the 64 bit distro I'll use it. My hardware has 4 GB of RAM, which I hope is enough for development use.
    Thanks.

I found this post on the Ubuntu forums which indicates trouble running Workshop on ubuntu. Maybe OSB works but Workshop has problems on Ubuntu:

  • ~~[DONE]~~ Installing Oracle 10g Rel. 2 on linux distros...

    Hello guys,
I wanted to ask if anyone of you tried to install oracle 10g release 2 for personal use on any linux distro (free distros).
If yes which linux did you try?

Choose the Linux distribution that makes you feel most comfortable. At the Linux level, there is very little difference between fedora core 4 and SUSE linux 9.2 (if there is, they are not allowed to use the label Linux). At the 'other stuff thrown in' level, which makes it a distro, you need to decide which is going to make you happiest.
In any case, installing Oracle in Linux means you need to have the prerequisites set up. That means a specific version of the kernel, a specific set of libraries and a specific set of installed applications. If you have those, you follow a specific set of steps to install.
Werner Puschitz helps you figure out the specific prerequisites at ttp://www.puschitz.com ... if you can not understand the prereqs and steps, then you might want to spend more time learning Linux basic admin until you are more comfortable otherwise you will get into some trouble down the road.
