A Silly Anti-Virus Question

I am new to driod OS, was wondering how important an anti-virus app or software is on smartphones.
I know the dangers on the computer and windows system. Is there threat on the driod system. I only download apps from the market.
What anti-virus do you use?

In regards to the double post, what browser are you using?
Search is your friend in this community.
There are a couple of posts in the Android Apps section of this community that discuss antivirus applications as well as mentions of bad Apps that were removed from the Android Market.
As for what I use for antivirus applications, I have used both Lookout and AVG Antivirus on my phones. No big complaints for either of them. Norton has one. McAfee does too. Kapersky or something like it has an android application as well.

  • Backup and Anti-virus Questions

    Hello Lenovo community!
It has been about 3 weeks since my 430s arrived in the mail to my doorstep and I have enjoyed every minute of this product immensely compared to my old laptop.
However, as of late I've been getting this weird 'backup' pop that appears telling me my harddisk is full. But when I check my system it doesn't display as full.
It says I have used 84.8 GB out of 198 GB. I don't understand how that's full.
My anti-virus question is..well..I have Avira installed but whenever I try and turn it on, nothing happens? Why is this?
    Thanks.

Only one antivirus software can run at a time. I guess you uninstalled the one preinstalled by Lenovo. I use Microsoft's security essential. It is free and fine.
I agree, lenfall. I like MSE and ESET's NOD32. All AV's have their "moments" with false positives and other issues at one time or another. The tests can be different depending on several variables and who is running them.

  • Anti virus question

I am new to iMac, so please for give what is probably an ignorant question.
Do I need anti virus protection on my Mac even though I am not running any Windows programs (I have vowed to go "all mac")? From my research some say yes, some say no.
If I need it , should it be Virus Barrier X? Their info seems to say it is to protect you only if you are running Windows applications.
    All opinions are welcome!
    Dot

You do not need to run anti-virus software in the background; that just takes up processor cycles for no reason (on a Mac).
The only reason you may want to run anit-virus software (for periodic scanning of your drives) is if you are concerned about passing on files or forwarding emails with malware to Windows-using friends.
You can use the free program

  • Boot Camps & Windows 7 Security/Anti-virus Questions

Should I get anti-virus software for Windows 7? I don't plan on surfing the web on my Windows 7 partition. Basically all I plan on doing in Windows is gaming (so far I only have single player games but I could see myself getting an online multiplayer game like CoD MW 2). Are you still at risk in Windows just by having an internet connection, even if you never go onto Internet Explorer?
If so, then what Anti-virus programs would you recommend? (Preferably free programs if they exist)
Also, is it at all possible to get a virus on my Windows partition while surfing the web on my OS X partition? Can viruses modify the Windows partition of my harddrive while I'm on OS X?

Yes you need anti-virus. It's still Windows so just in case....
I can highly recommend the new Security Essentials from Microsoft. It's totally free, very light on system resources and getting rave reviews across the web. It has an excellent detection engine and very user friendly. I've dumped both AVG and AVAST (both also free) from my Windows systems and switched totally to Security Essentials. No regrets. Cheers!

  • Office 365 Anti-Virus?

    Hi All,
I know the OS X third-party Anti-Virus question has been answered Ad nauseam, but my question regards Office 2011 for MAC, with MS Office reputation of being a real magnet for picking-up nasty stuff, do I need need a third-party anti-nasty tool when using MS Office on a MAC?
IMHO OS X is already well protected, but as we have seen with Java, this protection doesn't always extend to third-party applications.

There are no currently-known vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office that allow malware to be installed. The only one that is being used right now to install malware on Macs is a vulnerability in Office 2004 and 2008 that was patched by Microsoft in June of 2009. So, any Mac with a different version of Office, or one where the Office updater has been run at least once since mid-2009, is safe at this time.
Word macro viruses are a remote possibility, now that Microsoft has added their scripting language back to Office, but those are pretty rare. Just make sure that Office is set to not load such scripts.

Question:  Do I need to run and anti virus program with MAC OSX Lion? Have heard different opinions! If so what would you recommend? Was looking at Sophos. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks

Do I need to run and anti virus program with MAC OSX Lion? Have heard different opinions!
You will continue to hear different opinions here, where thoughts range everywhere between "anti-virus software is the evil spawn of Satan" to "anyone not running anti-virus software is a fool."
Truth is, this is still a very personal decision on a Mac. Depending on circumstances, it is still very easily possible to stay safe without using anti-virus software, but circumstances and personal preferences vary widely. Besides which, anti-virus software cannot even remotely provide you a guarantee of protection!
To learn how to stay safe (with or without anti-virus software), and how to decide whether to use anti-virus software, see my Mac Malware Guide.

  • I just bought my MacBook Pro 13" and I tried to install an anti virus but then it went into a grey folder with a question mark I need help with restoring the iOS please

I need help taking out the grey folder with the question mark and I've try everything except the CD thing because my MacBook didn't come with one so I really need help please

What anti-virus software did you install? Although there's a lot of bad anti-virus software out there, no anti-virus software should cause such a problem. A gray screen with a flashing question mark on a folder means that no bootable system could be found, which means that the system was badly damaged or corrupt. Even installing bad software would not normally cause that, so either there was something badly wrong with the system already or the anti-virus software you tried to install was really, really bad!
As mende1 says, you need to reinstall the system at this point. After your system is back up and running, read my Mac Malware Guide. If, after reading that, you want anti-virus software, use one of the programms recommended in that guide.

  • Good anti-virus and question...

Is Sophos a good Anti-Virus? and also if i did have a virus, i erased my HD. Would that get rid of any virus/malware i had? Also i will be re-installing Lion.
There is still 3 folders and 2 files on my HD, will that be the malware/virus?
    Thanks.

While Sophos certainly receives numerous high marks from thiose who do use it, the value of such a product is mush less clear cut than it is for a Windows user.
While I have an antivirus on my Macs, I do not have it running as a background application when I am using my Mac. Currently there are no "Viruses" in the wild right now that are any significant threat to OS X. The Security inherrent to the system is also robust enough to prevent infection from other malware types that have ever been encountered. That is not to say that my system is 100% protected from ALL forms of malware.
First, by using a good antivirus, the application may (I said, "may") help protect Windows users from shared media that could be infected with code. That is to say, that the Mac AV Software would be the first line of defense to Windows-Only for which you might be the proverbial "typhoid Mary", infected but not sick.
This presumes that your Mac software is more capable than your Windows users at catching Windows malware.
I use rather robust malware and anti-virus protection on my Windows machines that I manage, so I don't see a need to augment it with a Mac solution that is likely to be wasted. Moreover, since I feel fairly confident that my Mac security is adequate, I don't run a Mav AV product continually. Nor would I want to keep one running, giving me a false sense of security at the cost of arunning process.
    Then again,
I practice a thrice weekly Time Machine backup regimen. I am very careful about letting any process run, unless I am sure about the process. And I am fastidious about knowing the operating system's components (what should be running or stored, and what should not.
If you are a user who wants peace of mind, and does not want to think about security, then an AV program will indeed help in some regard. However, I am not one to think that it replaces diligence at all. Any AV program can be fooled by a brand new threat, before your AV has the stored virus signature from a rencet update. Heuristics can only go so far. The best Antivirus is the user who knows his system, and keeps backups.
The bottom line: Get Sophos, and concurrently learn OS X, so that you might transition to better malware protection, which is yourself.

  • Recently, I updated to Firefox 4.0.1, and the new version disabled several of my programs, including my anti-virus. How can I go back to the previous version of Firefox?

I want to go back to the previous version of Firefox, because the new version (4.0.1 I think) that I downloaded disabled several of my programs, including my anti-virus program, because they were incompatible with the new version of Firefox. How do I get back to the previous version of Firefox and re-enable the disabled programs?

Some gestures have been removed in Firefox 4.
You can restore the zoom feature by changing the values of the related prefs on the <b>about:config</b> page.
    browser.gesture.pinch.in -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReduce</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.in.shift -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReset</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.out -> <b>cmd_fullZoomEnlarge</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.out.shift -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReset</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.latched -> <b>false</b>
To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
You can use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a pref more easily.

    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:

If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using Dr.Web Light from the App Store. It's free, and since it's from the App Store, it won't destabilize the system. If you prefer one of the better known commercial products, then Thomas recommends using Sophos.(Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.) If you already use Sophos, then be aware of this if you are using Mavericks: OS X Mavericks- Sophos Anti-Virus on-access scanner versions 8.0 - 9.1 may cause unexpected restarts
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there
is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

  • How can I remove an app claiming to be anti virus, that downloaded itself from e-mail?

    O
On Friday, May 21; I was reading my e-mail. I opened a message from a regular contact and immediately an application opened claiming to be "the latest Anti Virus program for Mac". It will not operate until you register, and it is $59.95 to register. As I was told by Apple people that I didn't need an anti virus program for my Mac., I figured it's a scam. Problem: How do I get it out of my system? (It created an icon on the Task bar that appears as a red shield). It also downloaded a page of ****.  I would like to get it out of the system without deleting and reinstalling the OS.

  • Do I need an anti-virus program on a MacBook?

I'm a brand new MacBook user. Just bought the 13-inch aluminum body version from Club Mac and it was delivered yesterday. The notebook is actually for my wife to be able to use while she's recovering from knee surgery in a couple of weeks and I thought it was time to branch our family out from PC's and Windows. So I'm setting up the MacBook for her to be able to use it...and for our family to get more literate on a Mac and it looks great! My question is do I need an anti-virus program and if so, which is a good one recommended by Mac users? NOTE: because my wife is familiar with Windows, I had XP service pack 3 installed and have VM Ware Fusion onboard to be able to run both Windows and Leopard for her convenience and to assist us. So there MAY be some Windows use on this MacBook, at least at first. All responses, replies, suggestions, welcome. THANK YOU.

Do You Need Anti-Virus Protection for Your Mac?
According to Rich Mogull's article, Should Mac Users Run Antivirus Software?,
"The reality is that today the Mac platform is relatively safe. There are hundreds of thousands of viruses and other malicious software programs floating around for Windows, but less than 200 are known to target the Mac, and many of those are aimed at versions of the Mac OS prior to Mac OS X (and thus have no effect on a modern Mac).
It's not that Mac OS X is inherently more secure against viruses than current versions of Windows (although it was clearly more secure than Windows prior to XP SP2); the numerous vulnerabilities reported and patched in recent years are just as exploitable as their Windows equivalents. But most security experts agree that malicious software these days is driven by financial incentives, and it's far more profitable to target the most dominant platform."
Mr. Mogull is a computer security expert. I recommend reading the entire article as it is quite informative.

  • Are there solutions to Compatibility Issues with Thunderbird, Windows 8.1 and Anti-Virus Software, e.g., MacAfee?

Since I upgraded to Windows 8.1, Thunderbird freezes up and goes into "Not Responding" mode repeatedly every few minutes. My research indicates that it is a problem with compatibility with antivirus software, which obviously is needed with an e-mail program. How can this problem be solved, or is there an antivirus program that works seamlessly with Thunderbird and Windows 8.1?

Personally I use ESET NOD32. It is not cheap, but it is unobtrusive and appears to get the job done. Originally I was drawn there for their server protection, but since I no longer have windows servers that need is gone, but I see no reason to change.
    Previously over the years I have used;
    * Norton (Found it just to much embedded into the operating system. Something went wrong with it and Windows would not boot.
    * Microsoft Security Essentials. Any application using large data files was unworkably slow. That included Thunderbird.
    * AVG It was just clunky and I did not like it.
But the big issue these days is the products are not just anti virus, they are suites including firewalls, password managers/vaults and often spam and scam tools. It is usually these later tools that cause the most issues with the firewalls blocking anything but known versions of known software and spam tools that mess up because it has not had enough testing.
Basically your on your own in selecting a product5. I can not recommend one. But I seriously question the need for mail scanning. Especially after that remarkable admission by Symantec regarding Norton's not scanning mail.
Thunderbird does not run any scripts in mail, nor does it do anything with attachments before you open them and then it decodes them and places them in the temp folder where any good anti virus will scan them.
Personally I suggest anti virus rather than security suite software. Especially so if you use Chrome or Firefox browsers and they both use Google lists of known malware and phishing site to block inadvertent visits.
Windows has a firewall, your modem (over 90%) has one as well, those firewalls block ports, protocols and route traffic. Do you also need one that blocks programs?
Mozilla products have a password manager, do you need another? And so the list goes on.

  • When I down loaded the new upate a message said that the upgrade was not compatible with my anti-virus software so they disabled it. This is unacceptable.

I got a message to up grade Firefox so I did. At a certain time in the process a message came up and said that you have some add ons that aren't compatible with this software so they will be disabled. At this time I tried to stop the up grade because I don't like things just being disabled, but it would not allow me to do so. As I continued to the next screen it told me that the software that was disabled was my anti-virus software. I run a business on my computer and am not happy that the protection of my computer and its contents is at risk.

Firefox 4 is itself no longer supported and is not secure so the choice is between firefox 5 and firefox 3.6.
Firefox 5 currently [/questions/839953#answer-205178 has problems] with the McAfee site advisor, but the McAfee AV still works ok with it; is that the AV you are using or is it something else ?

    Thanks.
I have been using Macs with OS X since the day OS X was launched on March 24, 2001.  (BTW, an experience I will never ever ever repeat, despite the overall clunkiness of OS9.)  I have never downloaded, purchased, used, tested, or thought about using an anti-virus software.  I still don't.  In all that time, I have never experienced malware, trojan horses, and/or viruses.  Whenever I read about these trojan horses or malware, it almost always requires user acquiesence, rarely superior coding of the malware.
Look, don't allow anything to have root access to your computer by keeping it secure by password, and only enter the password when you're sure of what's requiring it.  Don't download anything that you don't trust.  In other words, download Adobe Photoshop from Adobe's website, not from some random website in the Ukraine.  I don't like anti-virus software because they gobble up system resources that don't need to go something like protecting the Mac from nonexistent trouble.
But if you're going to lose sleep over this, then get ClamXav.  But it's really a waste of your time.
