A simple selection of objects behind and much more
Selecting things under a different object in the Illustartor is sometimes very annoying.
For proper selection of objects was invented several tools. Please use them alternately depending on the situation.
- outline mode
- preferences = object selections by patch only
- menu Lock = lock selection, All artwork above other layers
+ isloate mode
+ smart guides
+ layers (pity that to this day can not enable the option automatically locates the object)
But still the selection of one object over time requires a lot of time and clicking. Especially if they are just above or below.
The Blender is such a great option. According to me, works well and is easy to use. You can work on hundreds of superimposed objects, and continues to act quickly. it is not perfect but I would very I would see in Illustrtaor. However, this requires a better reflection of the current use of the objects in Illustrator than it is today.
New Method of Selection:
1. Click on an object once and you select an object on top,
2. for any re-clicking LBM selects an object underneath. Simple, fast and understandable.
+. By clicking and selecting objects at the same time watching a dream in which Appearance palette name and see what properties of the selected object.
+. Adding to the selection or subtraction:
- When I have selected the correct object can click on the layer name
- Layer palette displays a view of all layers
- New: Automatically expanding palette view to show the structure of the objectindicated in the structure of the layers and stack.
- Now I can easily add or subtract to the selection of other objects or select just another object.
Important to work with this method to modify the interface illustartor.
1. Palette Appearance must expand and show more things. For example, as in this description:
http://forums.adobe.com/message/3024803#3024803
2. This rapid work with objects should also improve the Illustrator interface and make it more useful.
Quick change opportunity to give a name or a group or object.
Even now it is missing this opportunity. Even now it is missing this opportunity. For example, click and change the name in these views:
One Clik and change name of layers or object or group or patch...
Note. If it can be easily and quickly rename objects. RBM is an option on the menu will show that the category of the popup list of objects under the cursor.
It would be enough to click on the object and would be selected. Super for me!
3. New. The new functionality.
- Appearance palette retains the settings of the object was last selected. Just as color palette ikon "Out of... Click to correct".
The appearance palette, she could be named: "Last appearance use. Click to Add or Click+Alt to show".
- This allows me to select a different object, and quickly give it the properties of the previous one.
- Or click on the icon of the previous appearance when they are showing up and I choose only the one I want to use the new facility, eg by drag & drop the icon of the appearance of the currently selected object. — Something like a story last selected object appearance to choose to use the newfacility.
Or better. Drop-down list to the history of recently used names of objects.
The choice would result in giving the highlighted current object stored Apperance.Alt + Click does not change the selected object apperance just simply list Apperance with the possibility of drag and drop individual features in the current Apperance select object.
Appearance to such a list could choose to display in the view layers palette by clicking on the icon Apperance.
Of course, the idea presented is not conclusive, show just the way we work withillustartor expect from a modern program.
After the present work in Illustartorze are really very complex and currentlydevotes much time on it just to check something.
Currently Illustartor reminds me of a Christmas tree with different ideas than theprofessional tool for my daily earning.
I spend my time like other colleagues on this forum because I support the idea, and Adobe Illustrator.
I hope someone appreciates it. I've been looking around for an idea for anotherprogram to work with vectors.

Just updated to itunes 12.1.0.71 - big problem - can no longer access the legacy "Get Info" where you could change multiple files, easily add artwork, add album name for TV show, and much more. In previous iTunes 12 you'd right click and hold shift key and be able to get to it. Anyone figured this out?
The "legacy" metadata editors, for which there was a "back door" in iTunes 12.0, have gone from 12.1. However, the revised editors in 12.1 provide access to (almost) all the metadata elements that were available in iTunes 11, albeit in a different layout and with some additional constraints based on media kind. Some users have / will have an issue with the statement that "Get Info has been completely redesigned in iTunes 12 to focus your attention only on what’s necessary for the selected item" since that removes some metadata elements that people may have been using in creative ways. iTunes 12.1 basically gives you access to the fields that Apple think are necessary ... . Some of the things that have been excluded by this rule:
track and disc number fields for video media kinds
show and episode fields for music
description tab for audiobooks made up of more than one file
Obviously the first two examples can be regarded as "overloading" the metadata elements - i.e., using them in ways that the designers didn't intend - but given that some users do find valid cases for this it's a shame that they've been deprecated in the new UI. There are couple of workarounds:
in songs view (or any of the other columnar views), you can still select any fields to display, independent of media kind, and these can be edited (though only one at a time) by double-clicking in the relevant "cell"
you can (temporarily) change the media kind of an item (or group of items) to get access to metadata elements that would otherwise be inaccessible.
It may be worth submitting an issue via https://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html - I can't see it as a huge development task to have a user preference to switch between "show all fields" and "filter fields based on media kind".
One other oddity/irritation is that some of the tabs don't, by default, show all the available fields - you need to scroll up/down to access them or to expand the window by dragging on one of its corners. Fortunately, the latter seems to be persistent - once you've done this to make all the fields visible the editor will open at the same (larger) size when opened again. -

BlackBerry World - RSS HubI use a Withings scale. Yes, it requires the Withings apps but syncing has been pretty seamless. The HealthKit framework is designed to allow applications to share information. At this point, it doesn't appear to be designed to allow devices to share information with the Health app directly. Given the fairly rudimentary nature of the way information is displayed by Health, this makes sense. Health is great for making sure that the weight data from my Withings scale gets synced to My Fitness Pal and Runkeeper. It's far more useful to me to see my weight data in MFP where it is used with the food diary and the movement data from my UP24 to give me a good picture of what I need to be doing. Health just doesn't really compare. It gives you basic graphs and that's about it.
So, I guess what I'm saying is don't discount the scales that require an app. The Withings app is very nice. It also lets me take my resting pulse every morning (which is sent to Health).

Selecting an object behind another object
I'm sure there is a simple answer to this. I am trying to place a rectangle behind a text box to make a bit of the text more visible. In other programs there is often a modifier key to select an object that lies behind another object. Does anyone know how to do this in iWeb 09?
KimHave you tried adding background fill color to the text box with the Inspector/Text/Text pane?
Click to view full size
That way there's no shape to have to align with.

Simple Select query with 'where', 'and', 'between' clauses takes time
Hi,
I have a select query as below
SELECT * FROM (SELECT a.*,ROWNUM currentStartRecord From (select ai_inbound.ai_inb_seq tableseq,'AI_INBOUND' tablename,'INBOUND' direction,ai_inbound.appl,ai_inbound.ai_date datetime,ai_inbound.ic_receiver_id pg_id,ai_inbound.ic_sender_id tp_id,ai_inbound.session_no,ai_inbound.ic_ctl_no,ai_inbound.msg_set_id msg_type,ai_inbound.appl_msg_ctl_no reference_no,ai_inbound.fg_version version,ai_inbound.msg_status status,ai_inbound.input_file_name,ai_inbound.output_file_name,ai_inbound.ack_file_name from ai_inbound where ai_inbound.appl = ? and ai_inbound.ai_date between ? and ? )a where ROWNUM <= 49)where currentStartRecord >= 0
The above query takes longer time through application than expected when the date fields are passed whereas it works fine when no date fields are passed. We are using oracle9.2 version of the database. All the indexed columns and partitioned indexed columns are rebuild.
Kindly let me know how can i tune up the query to improve the performance.

This is an example of my problem. This icon is the sole object in this document, and is the only thing being exported here. Yet when I do export it, a random bar of white space is exported along with it. I am currently using Illustrator to design the art for a video game, meaning that this empty space plays havoc with my end product, and I have to meticulously crop anything I export. Since I do have to make hundreds of individual sprites for this, I would love to learn how to fix this problem and save myself a lot of time. So, what exactly am I doing wrong here, and how can I fix it?
quicklite,
I believe the resulting/final size may extend just a tiny bit above a whole point/pixel (value) on the pixel grid.
You may see by Edit>Preferences>General>Use Preview Bounds (if needed), then select one of the top Reference Points in the Transform palette and look at the Y value measured in points/pixels.
If that is the case, the solution would be to get rid of that tiny bit. -
So, I am having a ton of trouble with my iPod recently. I had outlined my first problem in an earlier thread <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2222232&tstart=0>.
No one was of any help there, but now I have some new problems. Eventually, I was able to restore my iPod on an XP machine, and it started to work fine on my Windows 7 machine. I would press the sync button, and it would take for ever on one song, and eventually just stop for no reason. I would press the sync button, and it would start and eventually in this stop start syncing process it would give me an unknown error (-69 and -40). After restoring it a few times and trying again I eventually got it to get a few thousand (out of my 12k) onto the iPod and just gave up until the morning. I had left it playing and it eventually died.
I plugged it into my computer (Windows 7) in order to charge it again, but it gave me an error that it was in "Restore Mode" and needed to be restored. Then it gave me an error that it was unable to restore. I did everything on the list as well as reassigning the drive letter to an unused drive etc. I can't restore it, I can't do anything with it. Windows can't even format it at all. Any help would be wonderful.Maybe I didn't phrase the question clearly. Why did the simple online update (I don't know all what was updated; there's no log to show what was done...) basically zero out/reset all my applications. My fonts are gone as well.
I do still have my working docs as they were on different hard drive from the system and applications. I have email, Firefox bookmarks, fonts, etc. on my old machine, so in a sense, all I lost were 5 days worth of emails and time spent pulling my hair out.
I just want to know what I might have done wrong in the first place to cause this. Just don't want to do it again.
thanks,
laurieb

Select point on chart and retrieve more than just data
var ShiftChart = document.FR_Runtime_ShiftHistory.getChartObject();
var selDate = ShiftChart.getYDataValueAt(1,ShiftChart.getLastSelectedPoint());
alert(selDate);
When dealing with a grid I can find the select cell value of column 1 or whatever column. How can I do the same thing by using a chart? In this example, I select the pen at a point on the chart and it gives me the data for it. I would like extract other values that identify that point like Date and Line. How can I do this?I used your suggestion and "nLINE" is the 2nd column. So I replaced it with the number 2. I did the alert and I got no data in the pop up window. Now according to you, this means the data is not an integer. I know that nLINE in my database is an INT. So what could be the problem and what is the next step.
In my applet this is my param
<param name="ChartSelectionEvent" value="DrillDown">
Here is the function
function DrillDown()
//set up aliases for easy reference
var ShiftChart = document.FR_Runtime_ShiftHistory.getChartObject();
var selPoint = ShiftChart.getLastSelectedPoint();
var test = ShiftChart.getDatalinkValue(1,selPoint,1);
alert(test); -

TOTAL 313.5MMmmmm I tried this an it didn't seem to solve my problem, but I think it helped me understand what's going on slightly more than before. I restored my system and files after my HD became corrupted by duping the drive. When I restored everything, it seems there might have been some conflicting problems with the OS and two identical users were created. So now in order to access my personalized settings and what not, I need to unlock my user settings and leave it unlocked for a few hours. This wouldn't be a problem if my MBP didn't give me kernal panics every time I run Safari or some general application for more than 10 minutes. I'm going to declare AppleCare as it's been under 3 years, but want to wait before my replacement iMac comes. Thank you for your help.

Mail and much more lost after software updates
Background - I upgraded from G4 with 10.3.9 to Mac Pro 1.1 with 10.4.7 one week ago.
When I was working on my machine Saturday, I got a software update box. I clicked the button to run the various software updates, and left. When I came to work this morning, I opened Firefox and found all my bookmarks gone. Weird. I opened Mail to check on emails, and it gave me the "this is how you set up your account" box.
Bottom line: I have lost all my email (hundreds of messages, dozens of mailboxes, very bad) and Firefox bookmarks (okay, not so dire, but very annoying).
Question: Why did it do this? What did I do to cause this? Why, Lord, why???
Thanks,
laurieb
Mac Pro 1.1 Mac OS X (10.4.7)Maybe I didn't phrase the question clearly.
Just don't want to do it again.
thanks,
laurieb

New network (and much more) monitor for XFCE panel
A few years ago I wrote a tiny app to show a text network monitor in the XFCE panel, resembling the previous one I was familiarized with (in KDE?).
The past month I started fixing a bug and ended in a full rewrite, but keeping the original simplicity (at least in the panel bar) despite that now reports far more than the network activity.
The installation instructions are the same: download a single file (no dependencies), compile it, add a Generic Monitor Applet (XFCE) to the panel and configure it to load the new executable.
I have updated the wiki page, but the full instructions and code is now hosted at github: "Hacker's Monitor for XFCE". Yes, it has a new name also.
Here follows a screenshot with the mouse over the applet to open the tooltip (yes, I was intentionally doing a dd from /dev/sda into /dev/null ):

Safari crashing, iTunes crashing, touch screen unresponsive, and much more!
I've posted before about how I can only have one window opened when browsing the web or else the pages refresh on their own, or safari just crashes. Sometimes it starts recieving my keyboard input really slow (like right now) and then crash, making me waste time typing; other times the screen becomes unresponsive, I can move around the page but not type or press buttons, or if I'm listening to music iTunes will just stop working, then after it all crashes again the phone won't work and start blasting music as soon as I turn it on from sleep. Youtube movies play with no sounds or crash right away too.
resets, restarts, compete reformatting fix the problem for 5 minutes then it goes crazy again.
I have less than 800mb of music in my phone, it has 3gb of empty space, I empty cache, do a reset of network settings and have tried everything the iPhone customer device reps have said to do but my iPhone is still acting up.
any suggestions besides taking it to an apple store and getting it serviced?
Its a 4gb iPhone purchased in June 2007Pages always refresh on their own--so not an issue.
Safari Crashing is an issue though. If it keeps up and the screen is unresponsive take it to Apple definitely. -
'select objects: click and drag to select several objects' doesn't work
I have recently upgraded to Office 2010, and have the same problem as
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/office2010/thread/75270638-e02b-4a78-b291-043abbca04ae?prof=required
When I use Select - Select Objects in the Editing part of the ribbon to select multiple drawing shapes, it no longer works like in office 2007. I can't drag a rectangle in the document to select objects within an area.
I would have guessed this is the same problem as the link I refer to, but I'm not running the beta version of 2010. It seems not to be solved.
Anything I can do to fix this?I have just registered so I could reply to this thread.
The registration process was very ... aehm ... frustrating, I was only able to fill in the correct Captcha after about 10 ties. But ... this is not unexpected, when working with a Microsfoft product. How am I supposed to know whether that bloody captcha
wants me to to write '4Yp8' or '4yP8'. There is no way to tell. You can distinguish capital letters when it is something like A, a or H, h, but not between y and Y or P and p.
I would like to thank all the posters for suggested workarounds. They work. Kinda - sorta ... . I was able to finish the editing of large picture (consisting of many graphics objects) that HAS to be made in word (My boss said so). All your tips saved
me *hours* of frustration.
I would like to tell Microsoft programmers AND their managers, that *if* the quote in the second post is correct:
================
The work needed to make the object selection work as it did in Word 2007 was out of scope for this release. It's not as
simple as using the same feature that existed in the last version since we upgrading our graphics/art features; the way the shapes/objects need to be selected is different than how "old" graphics/art is selectable in Word 2007.
That said, the "select object" tool that exists in Word 2010 should allow you to select individual shapes. You can select
multiple shapes holding down the CTRL or SHIFT key while clicking shapes. You might ask how this is different than selecting shapes without turning on "select objects"; the answer to that would be to allow you to select shapes that are "behind" text, or more
easily select rotated shapes, etc.

You are bunch of incompetent amateurs.
If I used such lame excuse for missing important functionality at work, I would be very soon replaced by a more competent programmer.
This time I am not a programmer, I am AN USER. And, as an user I do not care if your internal data structure for new objects doesn't let you do something easily. Find a way to implement that feature or change the data structure. Period. -
Very new to photoshop I am trying to make changes to a photo and set it up as a smart object but after selecting smart object, the checkerboard appears and my photo dissppears

How do I get 1 object to appear behind and in front of different parts of a Letter?
Hi, I'm using Illustrator CC, there are 4 orange objects and the letter A in the image below. The blue arrow is to point to where I want the orange object to appear in front of that part of the black letter A. The green arrow points to where I want the orange object to remain behind that part of the letter A. Can anyone suggest how I make only the orange part (blue arrow) appear in front of the letter A, while still retaining the orange gradient? I tried using the scissor tool to slice the object in half and then re-arrange, but that tool seems to 'reset' the gradient.
Obelix,
You may (keeping the A as live Type if you wish):
1) Create a stroke/nofill object that covers the part of the orange object to go in front of the A;
2) Copy the orange object and move the topmost one in front of the A (or the bottommost behind it);
3) Select the object from 1) and the topmost orange from 2) and Object>Clipping Mask>Make.
With this, part of the topmost orange object will be clipped out so you can see the bottommost one go behind the A where it should.
