A small dark area at the bottom of MBA 2013 13" display

Hi
I've bought my MBA 13" 760 about 1 week ago and found that about 1cm of my display at the bottom is a little bit darker than other places and it can be seen in white screens.
is it a faulty screen? am i the only one? is there any solution?
Thanks

Take it in to be inspected by the Apple store genius bar technicians.  Remember, you have 14 days from the date of purchase to exchange the unit or get a refund.

The dark bar is caused by the option "Show metadata below image".
Check the settings for the metadata overlays in Grid view (basic and expanded) by clicking the little "badge" icon below the Browser and selecting "Edit". Is the filename still enabled in the list? And in a high enough position to have precedence for other metadata tags, if the space does not suffice to show all selected tags?

  • Dark Cloudy Area at the Bottom of Display

I have noticed a grey cloudy looking area at the bottom of my 24-inch Cinema Display. It kinda looks like an oil stain on the bottom of the screen. Does anyone have similar problems and or solutions? Thanks.

The 'cloudy looking area' you are describing is actually minor abrasions to the acrylic screen cover (the part held in by magnets). The abrasions are caused by the anti-static bag rubbing against the screen where the styrofoam blocks hold the screen in the packaging.
If you look carefully the abrasions in the bottom right and left corners are contained in a triangular area, the shape of the the pattern exactly matches the size and mold pattern of the styrofoam blocks. Some sets also show the same abrasions at the top of the screen they too match the size and shape of the styrofoam block used to hold the monitor in place in the packaging.
As the monitor shifts slightly in transit, the anti-static bag (which is sort of stiff) is rubbed against the monitor screen. The abrasions can bee seen where the anti-static bag is pushed against the screen by the styrofoam blocks.
No regular cleaning solution will remove the marks as they are wear spots on the acrylic screen protector. The only solution is to replace the screen (the part held in by magnets).

  • Why is there a slightly dark spot on the bottom left hand corner on my iPod Touch 3rd Gen after I cleaned it?

I was cleaning it and when I turn it on again there's this dark spot in the bottom left hand corner and I was like what? So I rebooted my device and it was still there. It still works but I'm afraid it might break. I've cleaned this many times before and this never happened! Please Help! *sobs*

Weird things happen at factories. After onboxing my new phone I took the plastic off and it had a small fingerprint on the side. I didn't even touch the phone.

  • It's some time the monitor of my MacBook Pro presents dark zones at the bottom. I suppose it depends on the lamps. Do you confirm? Is there anything I should do before calling for assistance?

You can run the Apple Hardware Test.
I agree with Carolyn. If that doesn't show anything, Apple has more comprehensive tests. Call an Apple Store and make an appointment with the "genius" bar (free). I don't think an SMCReset is going to help in this situation, but if it was my Mac, I'd try it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • When using private browsing to view image results in Safari 5.1.3, only the first two rows of results are visible, the following four or so rows display greyed out place holders, and the safe search button is inoperable. Suggestions?

When using private browsing to view image results in Safari 5.1.3, only the first two rows of results are visible, the following four or so rows display greyed out place holders, the remainder of the results page is blank, and the safe search button is inoperable. When I turn off private browsing and refresh the page, everything works again.
    Anyone else having this problem?

I have got the same behaviour after the last Safari Update to 5.1.3. It seems that Safari now handles some scripts in a new way. If you debug the Google Website, you will see, that there is some Javascript Error, that seems to prevent to write into local cache. After some searching I wasn't able to finde a solution for this problem, other then disabling Javascript while private browsing to prevent the script loading. You then are able to use Google with the old layout. The option to disable JavaScript can be found in the Menu "Developer", wich has to be enabled in Safari in the options first.
In my opinion this is a bug that is now occuring, because Apple changed something in private browsing and that has to be fixed by Google now, to run again. Or we will have to wait for 5.1.4, as you can read online Apple will change and bugfix the javascript engine in that version, perhaps this fixes the problem as well. I hope so!
If anyone is in the developer program perhaps you could test this with the beta of 5.1.4 and tell us if it works.

  • Small thin line at the bottom when converting analog to digital

I encounter a small line at the bottom of my videos (this is also on the DVD that I burn) when I try to convert my Sony Hi8 to Digital while using iMovie HD6. When I try this at home on my Sony Viao PC with the built in Giga Pocket Converter there is no line. I thought that it might be my DV converter a datvideo DAC-200 so I got a PyroA/V Link converter and the result was the same. When I use my Sony DV Camcorder every thing is great. I talked to apple support and they said that it was probably the tape. I told them that I had tried several HI8 tapes and the result was the same. (they were no help) Does anyone have these issues BB

    4. Frequently Argued Questions
4.1 Isn't 720 the real width of a 4:3 image? If not, then why are 720 pixels sampled instead of 711 or 702 (or whatever)?
720 pixels are sampled to allow for little deviation from the ideal timing values for blanking and active line lenght in analog signal. In practice, analog video signal - especially if coming from a wobbly home video tape recorder - can never be that precise in timing. It is useful to have a little headroom for digitizing all of the signal even if it is of a bit shoddy quality or otherwise non-standard.
720 pixels are also sampled to make it sure that the signal-to-be-digitized has had the time to slope back to blanking level at the both ends. (This is to avoid nasty overshooting or ringing effects, comparable to the clicks and pops you can hear at the start and end of an audio sample.)
Last but not least, 720 pixels are sampled because a common sampling rate (13.5 MHz) and amount of samples per line (720) makes it easier for the hardware manufactures to design multi-standard digital video equipment.

  • Screen problem - dark patches at the bottom, overall brightness reduced

I bought my MacBook in September 2008 and about 11 months later some dark patches (rather like large thumb-prints) started to appear at the bottom of the screen. The overall brightness of the screen has reduced as well. The patches are more noticable when turning it on in the morning (i.e. when it's been off all night for 10-12 hours), and they fade slightly after a few minutes. The brightness of the screen however, does not improve. It's not ridiculously dark, but the difference is still notable, and when compared with another, one can clearly see mine is a lot darker.
I took it back to the retailer (while within warranty) and their repair company do not think there is anything wrong with it. I know the basics about computer hardware, and my guess is that the backlight has malfunctioned.
Does anyone disagree? If so, what do you think the problem is? I'm not interested in fixing anything myself as that would involve me forking out. Plus I want to get as much out of the retailer as I can for messing me around for over four months!
    Cheers,
    Ben.

I know this is a bit late but when you say you took it back to the retailer are you referring to and Apple retail store or a third party reseller? If it's still under warranty take it to an authorized service provider.

  • Small dark cloud on the screen

Just found a small dark cloud on my 17" macbook pro c2d, I bought this machine in December.
Initially I thought it's just dust, after cleaning the screen, it's still there... anyway it's fine, if it's any dark characters or picture background there... but if it's white background, or the light-color'd picture, it's horrible, and the dark cloud just happened close to the center of the screen... any time, I'm typing/view the web pages, it looks ugly...
    My questions are :
    1. did anyone has the similar problem w/ their mbp 17" display? (I dont have this problem when I buy it)
    2. I think I'm still in the applecare period? Does it include the display?
    Thanks,
    Michael

Does it look anything like this?
    http://idisk.mac.com/tboelskifte/Public/Pictures/Skitch/ugly-20070727-104556.png
I just got a new 17" MacBook Pro a few moths ago, because I ruined the screen of the 15" I had been very happy with.
So I've been taking really good care of this one, and still this is what I see this morning. I have no idea what it is, I keep it in a very expensive computer-bag each night, and it has never been in contact with moisture of any kind.
I'm very close to tears right now and feel like everything is just ... not worth it anymore, I mean if taking care of your beloved Mac is yielding this result, what the **** is anything worth? I can't afford to get this fixed and Apple will just say I spilled something into it, everything *****!

  • Vertical Dark areas in the screen

    Hey all-
The screen on my MBP has some dim areas that run vertical across the bottom of the screen. They aren't lines, more like shadows. What is that?
    Help?

    I intermittently get these too.
I have the GeForce 8600M GT video processor that Apple will replace for free, but this seems to be an OS X issue regarding this processor. When I boot to Vista it goes away.
Apple has noted this problem with earlier versions of OS X, so they're probably working on a fix. If it starts to happen more often I will try the GeForce 8600M GT replacement.
In the meantime, this article describes how to reset the display:

  • Has anyone else had the screws fall out of the bottom of 2012 2013 Macbook Pro Retina?

Apple tried to repair my Macbook Pro Retina when I first got it. They took the back off, replaced the motherboard (which was not the problem), and returned it to me the next day (via FedEx). When I got the machine back, half of the screws on the back shell were falling out... and one was in crooked. Apple told me to take my machine to the authorized computer repair place to have the screws tightened. The screws were tightened and now, they are falling out again! I've read about needed some sort of locktight product to put the screws back in. I don't understand why an authorized repair place would not do this the first time! Can you tell me what the process should be on replacing the screws in the bottom (shell) of the Macbook Pro Retina? I've heard that the shell should be replaced when the new screws are put in. Is this true? (I have AppleCare and will take my machine in next week for repair.... again!) Thanks!

The first repair (when they thought logic board was bad) was a mail-in to Apple. They are the ones that did not re-apply the screws properly and they were falling out when I took computer out of the cardboard shipping box. Called Apple. They said take it to Computer Guys (only auth Apple repair here). Now, a new Mac store in the mall has opened. I think I will take it there this time since it was not done properly at the Computer Guys last time (however, Apple didn't put them back in properly in the FIRST place! Gee. I have Applecare and will stay with Apple repair only. Thanks! I appreciate everyone's input. It has been really helpful! The only reason I have not taken it to an Apple Store is because it is 3 hours away. I will see what this new Mac store has to offer. Oh... and, Apple Support did absolutely nothing for me! Did not even apologize for not fixing it properly the first time... and costing me time and money (as my computer is part of my job). Thanks again! Did Apple do this on purpose to keep us from repairing our own machines? I've seen so many complaints online and I imagine there will be more to come as the machines age and people try to make repairs themselves. Crazy.

  • My new video card shows me a small grey artifact at the bottom edge of the white screen at startup.

2 months ago I needed a new internal hard drive and a new video card.  For the past months my white start-up screen shows me a small grey artifact that looks somewhat like a floppy disk.  There are other small odd shaped artifacts around the lower corners of the start-up screen.  Should I return my computer to the Apple repair/dealer to replace the video card?
