A Small Question From an Inexperienced MacBook User

Hello everyone, hope all is well...
I have a small (but perhaps big) problem that I was hoping someone could help me out with...
I routinely use the erase free space function in disk utility (about once a month) and perform a seven pass erase on the "untitled" disk. The other day, I was playing around with my MacBook and decided to reinstall Mac OS X. I put the first installation disk in, and before getting started on the process, I went into disk utility and erased both the "untitled" disk and the disk entitled "74.5 Hitachi HTS542...". Then, I erased the free space on the "untitled" disk. Well, when the procedure was almost done, I suddenly got a message saying that there was some kind of internal disk error. I was not sure what had happened so I reinstalled everything and then did the same thing described above again - and, once again, I got that error message!
I finished the installation and started worrying. Did I damage something? I asked a friend of mine what might have happened and he said that erasing free space actually slightly damages your computer because it reduces the overall amount of memory your computer has. This small damage, he said, was the reason I received the error message.
Can anyone else give me some advice? Is it true using disk utility in this way damages your memory a bit? If so, how can I fix it? My friend said the damage is irreversible. Is this true? If so, just how much damage do you think might have occurred?
Some feedback on my problem would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again! I look forward to some replies!!

To launch Disk Utility from my install disk I have to put the first of the two installation CD's that came with my computer and go to Disk Utility but then quit after I'm done so that it doesn't go through the installation procedures, is that correct?
Yes. Boot with disk 1, select your language, and when the menu bar pops up, select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
Also, once in Disk Utility, what do I do to repair the disk? Do I go to First Aid and then click "repair disk permissions"?
Yes. You select the underlying volumes on your internal HD, click the First Aid tab (should be the default, if so, no need to click), and click repair disk. When that's finished, without errors, quit Disk Utility (no need to check permissions). If you get errors, repeat until they're gone or DU reports that it can't fix them. When you're finished, quit DU, select Startup Disk from the Utilities menu, select the internal boot volume, and click the Restart button.
Also, why is it necessary to do this while starting up from the Mac OS X installation disc?
Because you can't repair the disk you boot with.
I don't think I have the Apple Hardware Test program - where can I get that?
Read the two disks carefully. There should be a note (upper right-hand corner) that states to boot with the AHT, you hold down the D key.
…what is Disk Warrior?
Best disk utility for fixing disk directory errors. See http://www.alsoft.com/ for details.

  • Question from a Newbie wireless user

Please excuse the naivete of this question. I'm completely ignorant on everything pertaining to wireless internet. My old Powerbook 400mHz G4 Titanium has never had wireless of any kind until this week when I bought a PCMCIA wireless adapter. Never used wireless, don't know anything about it.
I started following the instructions on the PCM adapter this morning to get it all set up. I plan to toggle back and forth between wired internet at home and the wireless adapter when I'm out on the road.
I was surprised when I saw the window where I enter my settings that there were no less than ten different internet services flying around the room in my house! I guess I have a lot of wireless neighbors and I could easily access their bandwidth.
I imagine the same would go when I'm in town sitting in the library. They welcome you to use their internet access, but it's in a busy end of town and I'm sure I'll see numerous services available there too.
So I'm clueless on this topic. Again, I've never used wireless internet before - but I've read about these guys who've been arrested in front of coffee houses for stealing bandwidth at WiFi hotspots when they weren't paying customers.
What's the deal with sitting in your living room and using your neighbor's internet access? I know it's not ethical and we should all get our own, but what are legalities? And say I hopped on to someone's internet access +quite accidentally+...how does one get caught if you do it quietly? And have people actually gotten into trouble beyond these two guys that made national news?
I guess my main question is exactly how careful do I need to be to set the correct access service when there are ten immediately available in a public place? Can I just click on whatever signal is strongest and log on without fear of being caught?
I hope somebody knowledgeable can set me straight on this.
    Thanks.
    -JOHN
ps. Here's the news item on these guys stealing wireless internet access:
    http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2007/05/michigan-man-arrested-for-using- cafes-free-wifi-from-his-car.ars

You may find this technical article I've written helps you:

It is fairly long, but it was originally written in response to some questions from a non-technical friend, and so I've tried to keep it as straightforward as possible.

  • X220 - questions from a potential new user coming from a macbook pro

I have been using a macbook pro as my primary laptop for the last few years.
But I think it will now be more useful for me to have a windows laptop because I need to run a lot of windows programs and running them on the macbook either via virtualization or dual-booting leads to a mediocre battery life (compared to running OS X). Good battery life is becoming more and more important to me.
Hence, I am considering getting a Thinkpad X220. I have never owned a Thinkpad or other Lenovo laptop. Any help with the questions I have below would be greatly appreciated.
The features I value most on my Macbook are excellent build quality, nice clear display, the multitouch trackpad (gestures such as three finger dragging etc), relatively quiet operation, and excellent technical support. I know Thinkpads are renowned for excellent build quality, but how does the X220 compare on the other features?
I don't expect any Windows laptop will have as good multitouch support as the Macbook. But how does the multitouch support on the X220 compare with other Windows laptops?
Looking at the configuration options for the X220 I see there are a number of screen options. Of the two screens with webcams, one is called HD and the other is called Premium HD. Are these screens the same as TN and IPS (which seem to be the terms used in reviews on the web)?
I am considering buying on ebay instead of new. What is a fool-proof way of identifying whether the screen is HD or premium HD (e.g. a marking or a device manager name)? I ask so that I can instruct ebay sellers to check/confirm the screen type for me.
How easy and costly is it to replace the HD screen with premium HD at a later date?

    1) When referencing files to their hard drive
location on import, can I later move the files on the
hard drive using Aperture to do the moving?
according to the overview and a comment from joe schorr in another thread, yes
    2) After importing raw photos (referencing them to
their location on a hard drive) and editing them, can
    I:
    a) manually sort the remaining images
    b) then rename them in that order (so that the new
name appears on the hard drive as well)
    c) then sort by filename?
not sure yet, will have to wait to play with it ...
    3) When cropping, is there perspective control? For
instance, if I am shooting a building, can I
    straighten the lines?
do you mean the ability to correct perspective distortion? No ...
    4) Can websites be directly uploaded to a 3rd party
server using ftp or do I need to export the website,
then upload using a separate ftp program?
as of the current version, no, and no mention of it in the overiew of new features ...
    5) Sometimes when exporting files to a TIF or JPG, I
would like to manage these new files in the program
as well. Is there a way to import files into
Aperture during the export process? Or, would I have
to manually import the exported files. And is there
a way to tie each exported file to its master?
no, manually import, make a stack out them ...
    6) Is there dual monitor support?
    always has been
    7) When lifting and stamping adjustments from one
photo to another, is crop one of the adjustments that
    can be used?
no mention in new features - wait and see
    8) I have a MacPro with 2gb of ram, but how will the
performance be with the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT video
    card?
cannot comment on 7300 GT performance with 1.5, it isn't out yet ...
    9) How does batch renaming photos work with stacks?
For instance, if you rename a group of photos with
stacks, are the photos in the stack included in the
    renaming process?
as far as i know, if there are selected the get added to the batch process ...
    Thanks!
    sure thing

  • Quick questions from a new ATV user

    Hi guys
I've got today my ATV, like it so far...until i updated the software
now seems that when i play a video, the video freeze for few seconds, then it starts again; is kinda annoying especially when you watch a trailer; anyway seems that is random, so nothing that can be done.
    My questions:
1)why i can't copy stuff on the ATV like i do with my ipod touch? is annoying that it takes hours to copy a movie, when i could connect it via usb and get the work done, instead of waiting 2 hours to sync few episodes of a show (i have an airport extreme....).
    2) how can i pair the remote with the ATV only, instead of causing issues to all my MACs at home every time that i try to use the ATV?
    3) is there a manual somewhere, except the 3 pages manual available online and in the box?
    4) i saw a lot of hacks to play divx and other video formats....any chance to see an update from Apple instead of void the warranty to install these hacks?
Thanks a lot for the help...so far i like this little device, but i am surprised about the fact that the usb port is there for no reason...while on the airport extreme can be used to attach drives and printer any mod to attach an external storage?

    Thanks for the answers
    1) by ethernet cable you mean a cross cable between the mac and the ATV, or a simple connection with the router (Airport Extreme)? because in this case i have to unplug the tv and move the ATV in another room...not really practical
    2) tried, but even when ATV says "paired", i can still interact with my macbook and mac mini....annoying
    3) that was the small manual that i was talking about nothing more complex or in depth? or whatever i see is what i can get unless i hack it ?
    4) i understand the point; i just want to know if to get the full potentials of this product i have to hack it, or if there is a "regular " update that would enable some features (since someone compared the ATV to a stripped down Mac mini with Tiger on it); anyway for now i can live with it as is....the only hassle is to convert from DIVX the movies via QT, and takes about 1 hour for a 2 h movie (and 2 hours to sync down to the ATV lol)
    Thanks for your answers!

  • Questions from a future macbook owner

i would like to get a mac. either the normal macbook or the macbook pro, but i wanted to know if buying the pro is worth the xtra money. based on GHz, hard drive and memory/RAM, is it worth it?
if it is, which is probably the best deal? the $1,999, $2,499 or $2,799 one? is 2.4 GHz a huge difference from 2.5 GHz? is a 200GB memory a huge difference from 250GB?
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?nnmm=br owse&node=home/shopmac/family/macbookpro
also, is the pro easier to upgrade than the normal macbook

That's really a question of preference. I think you should visit a store http://www.apple.com/buy/ and feel for yourself which one can do tasks you need better.
    Advantage MacBook Pro:
    1. The MacBook you have no option for glossy versus matte display, whereas the MacBook Pro you do.
    2. The MacBook has no Express/34 slot. With that you can add EVDO, and SATA/II cards.
    3. The MacBook has no backlighting of keys.
    4. The MacBook has a smaller screen.
    5. The MacBook Pro has more peripheral ports.
    6. The MacBook Pro has a faster processor and a faster dedicated graphics processor.
    Advantage MacBook
    1. Its internal hard drive has instructions from Apple on how to replace.
    2. It is slightly lighter weight.

  • A few simple questions from a new Iphone user

Hi a few simple questions, just got an iphone 2g - 2nd hand so not really sure what to expect. Anyway I guess my first question is about mine sometimes being a little slow - when I look at contacts and sometimes when sending a txt it slows down/freezes a little - normal?
Secondly Edge - I havent used it much but when I have its been painfully slow, is this normal - is it always really slow - cause I had read despite not being 3g Edge was actually pretty fast - what exactly is data roaming by the way? I mean I have been switched off as basically I dont wanna use the internet till next month when they change my contract to one I get unlimited access on - is that right?
Im having a problems syncing videos to it - it just wont sync some but will others and Im not sure why - theyre same file type and they used to sync to my ipod touch but now they wont for some reason
    Cheers

    I have the origina iPhone.
Downloaded 2.0, synced phone with everything UNchecked. Installed 2.0. Synced with all the options checked to reload my data. The iPhone has been great. Noticed a little lag when I opened contacts. Installed the new upgrade, and everything is back, no lag.
Edge is Edge and nothing more. It is slow compared to a strong 3g signal. But is liveable most of the time. Heavy traffic can slow it down to barely usable.
My four wheel drive club has a web site with a large photo section. I was standing out in the middle of parking lot in San Jose, Ca and showing a friend some photos. It opens up a page of small picts to choose from. Select a print and it enlarges, He was amazed at how fast they appeard. Especially given the quantity of photos.

  • Time Machine question from an ex Windows user

Simple question that sounds stupid but I just wanted to be sure. I'm new to Mac OS so bear with me on this
Let's say I install a program and I want to be rid of completely or it causes some issues, if I use Time Machine to go back to before I installed it will all of the folders/directories that the program created be gone or will it just pull the icon?

There is another way of using Time Machine that I don't think Camelot has mentioned. He is talking about using the in-system interface to flip back and forth in time and restoring individual files, but what you, metalrocker, originally asked was if you could go back to before you installed your program, and you can.
First, a warning. Doing what I describe below will put your entire computer back the way it was before you installed the program you are having issues with. All documents, files, e-mails (if stored locally) will go back to what they were before. You can still get newer ones from your time machine, though.
Second, the concept: Go find the DVDs that came with your computer. The first one is all you need, also called Mac OS X Install DVD. Put that into your computer. Now shut the computer down. When it starts back up, hold the C key pressed. This will make the computer start from the DVD. Starting up will be noticably slower from the DVD. You will eventually get a few questions about language, and you have to agree to a user license. Stop after that. You do NOT want to reinstall the operating system. Instead, look at the menu on the top of the screen. There should be one item called Utilities. On that menu, there should be an item called "Restore from Time Machine" or something similar. THAT function WILL bring your entire system back the way it was at a selected date and time.
Normally this is only used if you messed something up really bad, or if you had computer problems on one machine so serious that you decided to switch to a new computer, but wanted all the stuff from your old one... from before the troubles began.
Of course, this alternative is serious overkill if all you wanted was to remove a program. Most of the time, I just chuck the App icon out, and possibly take a look into your user Library/Application Support folder, to see if the application put anything in there, and if so, throw that out too.
There IS yet another method - there IS such a thing as uninstalling a program. It is usually not necessary, and rarely recommended, but if anyone wants to hear more about it, and is a little handy with the Terminal, give me a shout.

  • A Dumb Question From A New CS3 User

I am in the process of building a new site using CS3. This is
my first experience with this product and I have what I am sure is
a remarkably dumb question. I have an image (a banner ad) centered
on one of the pages and would like to insert a table to the left of
the image without the image moving (i.e. down) from it's current
location. How can this be done?
    Thanks!

    Thanks!
    That worked perfectly.

An easy way is to make your table with two cells, then put
    the banner in the
right cell - if you need more subdivison of the left cell,
    you can put a
    table in it.

  • Dock Questions From a (Former) Windows User

Hi, I recently replaced my Windows machine with a Macbook. For the most part, I'm happy with the switch, but I can't help but feel there are a few things I miss from Windows.
For instance, the Start Menu. I've gotten so used to having it from my PC days -- is there something like it that I can download for OS X? Having everything in a single click would make the transition much easier for me.
My second issue is a bit difficult to explain. I work with a lot of Firefox windows while browsing the Internet; on a PC, if you have several browser windows open, they're all displayed seperately on the taskbar. But on Mac OS X, extra Firefox windows don't appear as a seperate objects on the Dock unless you actually hit the minimize button. Is there a way that extra windows -- whether it's multiple Word documents or multiple Excel spreadsheets -- can each appear on the Dock, seperately? It'd make it all easier to navigate. At least, for a previous Windows user.

    Hello,
I understand where you are coming from, I just switched from YEARS of PC use to my Macbook last month.
After fighting OS X for weeks, the best thing to do really is to get used to using F9 (or for your Firefox example F10 which will display just the windows from the program that is currently "active" instead of all windows with F9).
I know youre not a keyboard guy but trust me this works great. Also on my PC I used alt-tab like it was my job, and luckily apple-tab does the same thing. Another nice trick to go through your firefox windows is to use apple-`(right above tab).
As for the start menu thing, I havent missed it one bit. I recommend replacing the start menu with apple-spacebar. This will bring spotlight up and just start typing the program and it will appear at the top of the list in about 1/10 the time (seriously) as it would going through the start menu. But if you really want to stray away from the keyboard then moving applications to the dock is a good suggestion and you could also clutter your desktop with aliases (shortcuts). Use F11 (**** ANOTHER keyboard shortcut) to show your desktop.
    Good luck!

  • A few questions from a prospective GarageBand user...

My sister got a new Mac last year, and I love messing around on garageband, but I had a few questions.
I have only recently started to mess around with the non software instruments (i.e. playing an instrument or singing into the microphone that is built into the computer)...I was wondering, is there any way to hook up a better mic to the computer so that I could get better sound quality??
Also, instead of using the keys on my computer, is there any way I could buy a synthesizer at a place like best buy and hook it up to the computer and play it with Garagebad??? Would I be able to use all the "software" sounds that come with the synthesizer as well as the ones on the computer? Could it hook straight up to the computer, or would I have to use a microphone to get the sound off the synthesizer??
    Thanks for the help!!

I need a "controller" keyboard in order to play with garage band
a controller to record MIDI (play GB's instruments), if you want to use GB like a tape recorder you could record the audio from a synth (keyboard) into GB
I can't plug in an electronic drum kit that I physically use drum sticks to hit
if it's a MIDI controller drum kit, than you should be able to do so with a MIDI interface. if not, like above, you could use GB liek a tape recorder and plug an audio out of the kit into the Line-In on hte mac.
playing the guitar on garage band as one of the external instruments, what is the best way to do it??
    use an audio interface:
    http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/GBFAQ.html#interfaces
some people find pugging a guitar directly into the mac, though most do not:
    http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/GBFAQ.html#pluginguitar
(you can certainly try, it's nearly free, so why not)
Would I have to buy a good external microphone and just put it in front of the amplifier that the guitar is plugged into to get the best sound??
that's the way i do it, and to really capture that amp sound, I think it's best, though it's a little more complicated because you can't really plug a mic into a mac, again you need an interface/preamp

  • Several Questions from a Seasoned Itunes User...

    1) Is there a way to delete all my duplicates, but keep songs with the same title from different albums?
For example, how do I keep Phish's "Bouncing Around The Room" from Lawn Boy, AND "Bouncing Around The Room" from A Live One, but delete one of the two copies of Clapton's "Layla" from Unplugged?
    2) How do I make all the songs by the same artist from the same album only show up once under artist?
For example, I have the soundtrack to "Coraline" by Bruno Colias (sp?). All the songs are ONLY credited to him, and all the album, track, cover, and artist info is the same. However, when I scroll through the "B's" in my Artist folder, Bruno shows up 16 times, once for each track. How do I fix this.
    3) Where can I find a program that will convert my .avi's, WMVs, MPEG4s, and other video files into a file type itunes will recognize?
    4) When I change album artwork on a track, how do I undo it?
For example, I uploaded a CD by an indie band, and itunes couldn't find the artwork. So I found it on google. But I accidentally pasted the cover of an Amy Winehouse album on one of the tracks. When I copied the new album artwork, it stays until I click another track. Then when I go back to the track I changed, there's Amy again. No matter how many times I delete the tracks, and files, AND itunes, and re-install all of it, the cover art for said track is ALWAYS Amy Winehouse, even though it says it's been changed. How do I fix this?
    More questions to come.
    -Jackflap

when I want to get rid of duplicates I usually use File / new smart playlist for the artist or song, You cannot though delete from a smart playlist so I unselrct the tracks I want to get rid of. When I go back to Music I will search by song or artist and look for the unchecked tracks and delete them as usual
As for changing artwork that is wrongly attached, you abviously know how to use Google to get artwork (minimum 300 x 300 resolution). Highlight all tracks of an album /right click /get info / right click in artwork square and paste as usual
I don't know about video files... sorry

  • Organizational questions from a new iPhoto user

    Hello,
I recently purchased iPhoto in hopes that it will help me view my photos easily. I have a large (about 3,000) existing photo collection. I keep this collection very organized, and all photos are in a folder hierarchy of the form 'Year->Month->Day'. The name of each photo begins with the date, such as '2007-01-17 Trees.jpg'. My questions about iPhoto in relation to my existing photos are as follows:
    1) If I allow iPhoto to copy my photos, how does iPhoto organize the photos? Do I have any control over this organization or the file naming convention used? Will iPhoto recreate an intelligible directory structure with useful file names, or will all my subsequently imported photos be labeled as "PIC2315..." in a random directory structure?
    2) Can I make it such that iPhoto imports my photos and takes the date from the first characters of the file name, and the picture title from the subsequent portion of the file name?
    3) Not all of the dates in the metadata accurately reflect the date the photo was taken (some are old photos that were scanned in, some taken before digital cameras had extensive metadata), but the dates used at the beginning of the file names are accurate. Can I use iPhoto to update the date stamp on the photos in my library? Otherwise, the 'organize by date' option is not very useful.
    4) Is there any way to move the iPhoto library folder? It looks like, as with iTunes, iPhoto locates its library folder in a conspicuous location, whereas I feel that these files should be relegated to a more discrete location, like the Library folder (in my opinion, the 'pictures' folder should be reserved for images; data files should be stored elsewhere). This is not a big issue, more of an annoyance that Apple imposes its organizational conventions on me without my consent.
Advice on any of these questions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.
    Adrian
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

    Hi Adrian
    1) If I allow iPhoto to copy my photos, how does iPhoto organize the photos
Here's how the iPhoto Library Folder is organised:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
    To your specific questions:
Do I have any control over this organization
No. The exception is if you take responsibility for the File Management (In the Preferences, Advanced Pane, Uncheck Copy Files to the iPhoto Library Folder...) That way you can leave your files untouched in your file structure. However, if you do this when you delete a file from iPhoto you will need to delete it from the Finder by hand. Not the case if you let iPhoto do the file management.
Will iPhoto recreate an intelligible directory structure with useful file names, or will all my subsequently imported photos be labeled as "PIC2315..." in a random directory structure?
Yes it will, the files will be in rolls that can be named via the iPhoto Window and which names will be reflected in the Finder. The Pictures will be named as per the file name.
I'm guessing that all of this is so that you can easily and quickly find a file if you need it. However, you're missing the point of iPhoto. It's a Photo Organiser. The idea is you import your pics into it, they are stored (in full view) in the Finder and then everything you need to do can be done via the iPhoto Window. Organise them, arrange them into albums (infinitely more flexible than your current folders - a single pic can be in any number of albums or slideshows, can be in Smart Albums, can be easily edited in external editors and exported easily.) Want to find a file? There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    2) Can I make it such that iPhoto imports my photos and takes the date from the first characters of the file name, and the picture title from the subsequent portion of the file name?
No, it will take the date from the EXIF data. However you can edit the date, title etc. from the Info window (the wee 'i' bottom left hand corner.) I think that answers your next question as well.
    4. You can put the iPhoto Library Folder anywhere you like, on an external disk, in another place on your HD, whatever. Apple aren't forcing you to do anything. (You can do the same with iTunes too). However, remember the iPhoto Library Folder contains Data and images.
One thing to remember is the standard warning: It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
iPhoto is a very good app, reliable and very flexible. But you do have to work with it. All the work you've done on your folders you can recreate in the iPhoto Window (just drag the folders to the Source Window where they will be imported into Albums). Think of it as a Front End to your photo collection. Up to now you've been using the Finder as a front end, iPhoto is a lot more flexible.
Feel free to ask more if you want further clarification or info.

  • Mavericks questions from an "old" OSX user

    Hi,
I am having few questions lately on different features of Mavericks. If needed, I can split into different topics, let me know
    - Finder
The quick preview became extremely slow, it is now faster to open a picture directly in a program than clicking on the space to see it...
In the cover flow view, previews are not updated when files are moved or deleted. To get it refreshed, I must change the view so the cover flow is refreshed...
Do you know when Apple will decide to provide an update on that?
    - Accounts management / sync with Google
I have been using OSX since Tiger, I used to own an Android phone, now an iPhone. I realized that I have a pretty chaotic "Google account" management on my devices, each of them having its own setup. My iPhone has one account for Mail/Cal/Notes using standard type, plus another one for Contacts using cardDAV. My Mac has kind of the same setup, I found 2 different accounts setup (for only one real Google account), and one or the other is set as default in some apps. And of course everything is in sync with iCloud. I think since Apple have been improving its sync management, some stuff is not necessary anymore, or things could be simplified, but today I have no idea what is doing what.
Can someone explain what could be a "good" setup from scratch, to be able to sync everything smoothly? My question can seem stupid, but I actually did try to delete my current accounts and re-set everything, and I actually got the data back on the mac, but when I tried to do some more tests, I realized contacts are not sync back between my local / iCloud / Google properly, and I don't see any easy way to understand the logic, and if things are only pulled but not pushed for example.
I made some research, but I only find old topics that are out of date.
Thanks a lot for your support:)

I've seen the Finder issue as well with slow preview of pictures.  I've reported it to Apple so I'm hopefull that it will be fixed.  Generally Apple doesn't give details on what may be fixed and when.  But you're not alone in noticing that.
As far as account management, you can use many back-end services to keep contacts, etc.  You can have Contacts (nee Address Book) set to sync contacts with iCloud and Google if you want.  I just use iCloud.  If you want to move your contacts from Google to iCloud, I think you could probably just drag the contacts from Google to iCloud from within Address Book.  Same with calendar appointments if you want.  You just need to ensure both accounts are configured on your Mac and then drag and drop them (If they're not deleted from Google when you drag them over, then you could delete them as a separate step).
I've been using iCloud since it came out and it's been great for me.

  • Questions From A Potential New User

I am currently using Lightroom, but am excited about the new features in Aperture 1.5. Here are a few questions:
    1) When referencing files to their hard drive location on import, can I later move the files on the hard drive using Aperture to do the moving?
    2) After importing raw photos (referencing them to their location on a hard drive) and editing them, can I:
    a) manually sort the remaining images
    b) then rename them in that order (so that the new name appears on the hard drive as well)
    c) then sort by filename?
    3) When cropping, is there perspective control? For instance, if I am shooting a building, can I straighten the lines?
    4) Can websites be directly uploaded to a 3rd party server using ftp or do I need to export the website, then upload using a separate ftp program?
    5) Sometimes when exporting files to a TIF or JPG, I would like to manage these new files in the program as well. Is there a way to import files into Aperture during the export process? Or, would I have to manually import the exported files. And is there a way to tie each exported file to its master?
    6) Is there dual monitor support?
    7) When lifting and stamping adjustments from one photo to another, is crop one of the adjustments that can be used?
    8) I have a MacPro with 2gb of ram, but how will the performance be with the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT video card?
    9) How does batch renaming photos work with stacks? For instance, if you rename a group of photos with stacks, are the photos in the stack included in the renaming process?
    Thanks!

    1) When referencing files to their hard drive
location on import, can I later move the files on the
hard drive using Aperture to do the moving?
according to the overview and a comment from joe schorr in another thread, yes

their location on a hard drive) and editing them, can
    I:
    a) manually sort the remaining images
    b) then rename them in that order (so that the new
name appears on the hard drive as well)
    c) then sort by filename?
not sure yet, will have to wait to play with it ...
    Thanks!
