A solution to ipod going in to recovery ...at last!!

ipod 160 gig classic and 120 gig classic.
I had a 160gig (IP1) with my itunes library on an external hard drive. After 15 months of no problems, suddenly IP1 went in to recovery on sync of new tracks (lib. approx 15 500 songs and about 65 gig). Tried many obvious things (different usb port, new lead, using the external drive through laptop, using a powered usb, uploading in 10 gig stages, making a new library) and no luck. Found that if it got to anything under 32 gig, it was fine on disconnection. 1 byte over and goes in to recovery. Tried diff. upload orders of tracks/genres etc etc but same result, 1 byte over 32 gig and recovery.
Got a new 120 gig (IP2)for birthday (as suspected it might be a prob with IP1)and lo and behold same thing. Tried 4 times and for some reason on final try it didnt go in to recovery so at least had my library on ipod now. Kept trying IP1 but no luck. Didnt want to risk IP2 as didnt want to lose a full library from ipod again.
Due to another reason I had to strip and reload XP on to my comp so thought this might solve the itunes/ipod problem too! Tried IP1 again but same result, recovery on disconnection over 32 gig.
Then had problem with the external drive and replaced it. Tried again with IP1 same result.
New tunes have been added to my library on comp. since this problem so now 16 250. How do I upload? Used ipod 2 ipod and put new songs on IP1 (which had nothing on after recovery) and transfered over to IP2 so not risking IP2 going in to recovery via itunes.
Just for the ** of it I thought why not try putting full library fron IP2 on to IP1 just to confirm that the prob. had to be IP1. Guess what via ipod 2 ipod IP1 takes the lot all 16 250 tracks and 71gig...
So why the ** will itunes always send them in to recovery (on disconnection past the 32 gig mark) when I try to upload via that??????? It is done on the same computer, the same operating system several different versions of itunes (even tried a retro version in desperation) brand new libraries (in case was a flaw in one), same songs etc etc etc...Works via ipod 2 ipod but not via itunes
Any one like to offer a solution???? Please??????
Finally solved after 15 months. Via ipod to ipod you have to manually disconnect the ipods, so even if you are away from comp, they DONT automatically go in to the 'OK TO DISCONNECT' white bar on the ipod screen routine. When you upload via itunes it WILL automatically disconnect and, with my 2 ipods it always send them in to recovery.
Data base now 18 000+. For the sheer **** of it I gave it another try via itunes and happened to be sat at the comp when the final tracks synced. Rather than let it auto disconnect I did it manually and....this is the crunch...while the ipod screen shows 'OK TO DISCONNECT' and BEFORE the white bar has finished moving across, I unplugged the USB and f* me...no recovery and full library on the ipod!!!!!!!
So with my second ipod I experimented and found that before 32gig if I allow it to disconnect automatically and NOT unplug the USB it is fine...if I am 1 byte over 32 gig YOU MUST be at the computer when the last track syncs and unplug the USB BEFORE the white bar has run across the ipod screen annd everything is fine.
I am not tecchy enough to have any idea why (some 'surge' or 'reaction' ither by Windows, the computer or ipods if I allow the auto disconnect to complete???) but if anyone has a similar problem with a library over 32 gig then this solves it. Have to say am surprised (in all my previous postings) that nobody suggested this but hopefully it will help someone in future!!!

As outlined in this Apple KB article.

  • Ipod touch stuck in recovery mode and will not restore. error code 3194

ipod touch stuck in recovery mode, will not restore and comes up with error code 3194, itunes is up to date, please help

Hi @rchangel - Thanks for the ideas...
Yes - it won't let you install the 32 bit version on a 64 bit machine.
I've had a cursory look at the SP1 release notes, and couldn't spot anything vital - what critical stuff do you know of in SP1?
I don't want to have to go through all the pain of setting up VM's, reinstalling iTunes, getting all my album art back in etc. (though I could, as I do have Win7 pro). I've also heard that running iTunes in Windows 7 compatibility mode might help. Can anyone confirm whether that actually works?
I think it's in Apple's gift to fix this issue, given that they say that they support Windows 7. So far I've had no feedback from a mail I sent to Apple, and the number of users reporting this problem keeps going up and up.
I want Apple to recognise that there is a problem, and then I want them to fix it.

  • My iPod Touch is in Recovery Mode and iTunes Won't Detect It ?

    iPod Touch 4G
    iOS 5.1
    Purchased 2010
I Opened Up iTunes and Upgraded to iOS 5.1.1 from 5.1 as a "Download Only". The Next Morning I Go To My Computer Plug In My iPod and Update. My iPod Then Goes into Recovery Mode and When I Quit Recovery mode It goes straight to recovery mode again with and without the cable. iTunes does not detect it when i plus it in and neither does my computer, i have tried restarting apple mobile support and that does not work. The nearest apple store is 20 miles but i could go there.

See if you can kick it out of recovery mode with RecBoot.

  • HT201263 iPod touch gone into recovery mode midway through updating to iOS 6.1 - Help!!!

I tried to update my iPod touch (latest generation) to the new iOS system. Midway through the 30 minute download of the new software, an alert popped up telling me that the ipod connected was in recovery mode and needed to be restored in order to contiue. So I clicked restore, and the download started again. Once again, the same thing happened midway through. The download continues, and at the end of it it just disappears and my iPod stays on the connect to itunes screen (the one with the usb lead and itunes symbol). I've tried everything on the apple support pages but have had no luck at all. I've only had the iPod for a month now and have had no problems with it up til now. I know there's often problems caused by updating, but after spending hours searcing online for a solution I've yet to find anyone with the same problem, and therefore no solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Maybe if you try restoring to a previous version first, and then restore from backup.
This may help you find out how to roll back to the previous version:

  • IPod Touch stuck in recovery mode, error message 1611 when trying to restore.

I bought a 2nd generation ipod touch from someone on CL and it appeared to me that it just needed to be plugged into the computer and be synced with itunes. But its stuck in recovery mode. When I plug it into my computer, itunes says it sees the ipod is in recovery mode and needs to be restored. Sout t I click on restore and it tries to restore it, but then it stops in the process and gives me error message 1611. I looked up this error message and it has to do with system security. I messed with my security settings and I still get this message. I tried using my home computer instead of my laptop and it still gave me the same message. Ive also tried holding down the power and home button for several seconds and it still goes back to recovery and gives me the same error message when I try to restore it. Also, itunes recognizes my ipod, but my computer does not.. Can anyone help me? Do I just have to bring the ipod into an apple store and have them figure it out? Thanks in advance!

  • Why won't my ipod come out of recovery mode or restore!?!?!

Hey guys, a little earlier on I put my ipod touch 4g into recovery mode to restore it. I had way to much junk on my ipod. So i put it in recovery mode and tried to go onto my computer to restore. I plugged it in and went to iTunes, of course, it said an ipod in recovery mode has been detected... etc. so I pressed restore. It went until it was out of extracting software and then said iPod could not be restored due to error (9) so I decided to take it out of recovery mode and find a different solution. So I pressed the home and power button and so forth and so on. It took me to the apple logo and went back to the iTunes symbol with the USB cable under it. I've tried to restore it again but my computer will not detect it and I've tried it on two computers (running iTunes 11.1) and it doesnt show up. So I try to take it out of recovery mode again but nothing works... I really am in need of help. If you can help me please do thnaks!

  • IPod 3G stuck in recovery. Nothing is helping

I am on vacation and stupidly left the iPod in the car, in the sun for 2 hours. I don't have my laptop and am using a friend's. I did a new install of iTunes. I have already tried: temporarily disabling the antivirus, using a new sync cord, and putting the iPod in DFU mode (nothing doing - I can't even get the power off bar to show up). iTunes recognizes the iPod, goes through recovery, says it has been successful, then kicks right back to "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode..." I am nearly ready to surrender and just buy a "new to me" iPod off of Amazon

Try disabling the computer's antivirus and firewall.
    - Next try the manual install method of:
iDevice Troubleshooting 101 :: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch
Place the iPod in recovery mode after the firmware download is complete and then restore using the instructions in the article. Sometimes recovery mode timeouts and returns to disabled before the firmware download is complete.
    - Then try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

The high temperature of being in the car may have caused damage. However, usually the battery gets damaged.

  • Why did my iPod touch go into recovery mode when updating to iOS 8.1 over the air???

I was updating my iPod touch (5th Generation) to iOS 8.1 over the air update option and my iPod goes into recovery mode...I hadn't backed it up in like 2 weeks and a lot happened in two weeks with photos and everything. I have yet to see if I get any of them back but why did this happen? I thought apples over the air update was reasonably easy and secure...?

Hey Haywards, There has been reported issues with updating iPods to iOS 8, one of which is updating with the cloud or through Wi-Fi. Your seeing one of the problems. After you get things cleared up with the DFU recovery, connect your iPod with your computer via the cable and run the update through iTunes. You should be OK. Or if still an option, don't do the update at all! Many have reported several issues with iOS 8 on iPods. Slow or laggy operation, missing apps, missing music, camera roll not working or missing and huge battery drain and charging issues, just to mention a few. You may want to hold off from updating if possible. Things to think about. Good luck, Cheers.

  • My Laptop goes direct to recovery repair mode when i open and hangs. Presario CQ60, P/n NB049UA#ABA

    Pin/n: NB049UA#ABA
    Os: Windows Vista 32-bit
No Error appears on the screen it just hangs after powering the unit  and it goes direct torepair recovery mode.

I wouldn't format it yet.  You should be able to attach it as a 2nd drive on another machine and do a checkdisk and even download the drive certification test from the manufacturer.  The test will give you more insight as to the condition of the drive and try to fix bad sectors. If the data is not important, you can format the drive but you will probably drop the connection to the HP Utility or recovery partition.  If you have a set of back up disks, you are probably in good shape.  Did you try an external keyboard just in case the laptop one is bad?

  • HT201263 When my ipod touch is in recovery mode, when i try to restore it, the itunes page says the website has timed out so it won't recover. Can anyone please help me?

When my ipod touch is in recovery mode (when I try to re-store it) the itunes page sayes the website has been timed out and so it won't re-store. There is a limited time, whilst restoring the ipod, it lasts for approx 5 mins, then asks to start again all over again. Can anyone please help me?

Update to the latest version of iTunes. Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard) users may need to download iTunes 10.6.3.
Third-party security software or router security settings can also cause this issue. To resolve this, followTroubleshooting security software issues.
Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to performunauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. Uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer.
Edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from your hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect. For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you do not uninstall the unauthorized modification software prior to editing the hosts file, that software may automatically modify the hosts file again on restart.
Avoid using an older or modified .ipsw file. Try moving the current .ipsw file (see Advanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations), or try restoring in a new user to ensure that iTunes downloads a new .ipsw.

  • My iPod touch is in recovery mode, how do I get it out of this?

My daughter's iPod touch is in recovery mode (we know this by the code it gives us when she plugs it in to the computer), how do we get it out of this?  We have tried resetting by holding down the on/off button and the other button on the bottom front of the iPod for 30 seconds to a minute and nothing happens.

Two ways to get the iPod Touch out of recovery mode.
From iTunes click "Restore" this will download the latest iOS for your iPod Touch and install it.
Second way is to press and hold both the home button and the sleep button for around ten seconds and release them when the Apple logo shows on the screen.
