A specific bug in Smart Mailbox Rules in Apple Mail on OS X Yosemite

Steps to reproduce:
- Define a Smart Mail Box rule as shown below in screenshot.
- Change the value 7 to 2. So it will be 2 months.
- Close the dialog box.
- Right click on Smart Mailbox and select Edit Smart Mailbox. The dialog still says 7. The 2 never Saves.
Looks like a bug in Apple Mail.

It's already a known bug.

  • Smart Mailbox rules broken in 10.9

Ever since installing Mavericks, one of my Smart mailbox which shows emails in the last week with a Rule:
    Date received, is this week
    shows an empty mailbox.
Is this a known bug?  There's lots of discussion around the GMail bugs, but this is a different issue.

Same problem here and this was working great with other versions.

  • Why are complex Smart Mailbox rules not available?

I wonder if this is a technical limitation in OSX Mail, or simply that Apple can't find a good way to present the UI.
Here are some rules I can create in OSX Mail for filtering or for smart mailboxes:
ALL rule: Find mails which are **in the last 31 days** AND **from [email protected]**
ANY rule: Find mails in the last month **from [email protected]** OR **from [email protected]**
Here's the rule I'd like to create, but can't:
COMPLEX rule: Find mails which are **in the last 31 days** AND ( **from [email protected]** OR **from [email protected]** )
The third rule there combines both ALL and ANY rules. I have yet to see a mail application which supports this form of query in smart mailboxes, yet it seems like a perfectly normal use case (eg, find emails from team members A, B, or C, and which also have quality X).
Smart mailboxes would be much more helpful if they were that little bit smarter.

if you are not into editing smart mailbox plists by hand you can esily accomplish this by creating multiple smart mailboxes and combining them into further smart mailboxes. say, make smart mailboxes 1 and 2 using a bunch of AND conditions and a smart mailbox 3 with the condition that a message is in smart mailbox 1 OR in smart mailbox 2. that said, it's really not clear why this has not been implemented into GUI directly. it's been like this for a very long time. that mac os x hint you found is 4 years old.

  • Smart mailbox rules

I have some smart mailboxes set up within my mail - to divide work emails from personal emails.
I want to automatically forward work emails to a colleague when they arrive.
Is there a way I can set up a rule to apply only to messages within one of the smart mailboxes?
    Thanks

No. Rules only apply to messages in the inbox, as they arrive.
You can set up a rule to autoreply to that person, and it won't affect the display in the Smart Mailbox.
Also not, nothing is "in" a Smart Mailbox. It is just a display mechanism that shows you the results of a search. Nothing is moved into that mailbox.

  • Smart Mailbox needs "include Junk Mail Folder" option, seeking work-around

For me it's convenient to have a Smart Mailbox defined simply by "Message is new", as this collects together in one place all the unread messages that I've set rules to put in different mailboxes. While there is an option on the panel for defining Smart Mailboxes to include Trash or Sent in the smart-search, there is no such option to include the Junk mail folder, which I would like to do for a while until I believe it has "learned" well enough what I consider junk or not.
(Apple, take note: If Trash is an option, Junk should be, too!)
Any suggestions for a good work-around? Thanks!

    Hello burkeware,
I suggest you send feedback to Apple by filling out the [Feedback Form|http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html>. Maybe they'll incorporate these options in a future version of Mail.
    floba
PS: Concerning your "complex criteria". Have you already tried the boolean operators "or" and "not" in the search field? (BTW, two search strings are by default combined with the "and" operator, so there is no need for a separate "and".)

  • Bug with rules in Apple Mail

There is a bug when it comes to rules in Mail in 10.6.4 and 10.6.5 (and possibly earlier versions of Mail as well).
Here are the steps to reproduce the bug:
    1. Make sure you have an IMAP account in Mail.
    2. In your IMAP account's Mailbox Behaviors, UNCHECK the box that says "Store draft messages on server". This ensures that your draft messages will be saved locally on your Mac instead of on your IMAP server.
    3. Create one new rule that would ALWAYS be true of ANY new message that you would be creating in mail, such as:
    "From contains (your email address)"
    OR
"Sender is a member of group (name of a group that your own card is a part of)"
Don't create both of those rules... just choose one.
    4. The action that the rule should perform is:
"Set Color of text (choose a color)"
Make sure that you're NOT setting a BACKGROUND color, but rather that you're setting a TEXT color.
    5. Save the rule.
    6. Now, create a new message and start typing.
    7. Save the message as a draft once.
    8. Notice that the message shows up in your Drafts folder with the text color applied that you set in #4 above. This actually is a small bug right there, because rules shouldn't apply to messages in your drafts folder, but this first bug is not a big deal.
    9. Continue editing the message.
    10. Save the message as a draft for a 2nd time.
    11. This is where the major bug takes place. Look in your Drafts folder. Now, your message has shown up in your Drafts folder with the BACKGROUND COLOR of the message changed to the TEXT COLOR that you set in #4, which makes the message unreadable if you had chosen a dark text color. Even though you specified a TEXT color, Mail incorrectly applied a BACKGROUND color to the message.

Hey, thanks to pputnam, I just figured out a workaround to this bug!!
Because pputnam figured out that the rule "Message Type Is Mail" DOESN'T trigger the bug, I just added that as a criteria to my rule and now the problem doesn't happen!
So now the criteria for my rule looks like this:
If "ALL" the following conditions are met:
    "From contains (my email address)"
    "Message Type is Mail"
That is the official workaround for this bug!
Thank you pputnam for indirectly figuring out this problem.

    Mail Version 7.1 (1827)
Create new smart mailbox.  Quit Mail.  Restart Mail.  New smart mailbox is missing.

    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

  • Creating Rule/Script to emulate Mailbox App in Apple Mail

I'm using Mailbox for iPhone and I love the "snooze" feature: it allows you to snooze a message in the inbox sending it to a "Later" folder and bringing it back to the inbox later (tomorrow, this weekend, next week, etc., you choose).
I'd love to do the same in Apple Mail with flags. If I mark a message with a red flag, I want it to be moved to a "Later" folder, and I want it back to the Inbox 24 hours later. If I do it with green flag, 2 days later, purple 3, etc...
    Any way to do this?

    goldfilm wrote:
Thanks so much for your offer, but what I need is very different: an action when a flag is a condition, and flags are not part of conditions in Mail.
I believe that's because Mail Rules work on incoming mail and flags are set on the local machine. You can send an email with a priority (i.e. high), but not a flag
I want to manually flag a message in the Inbox and Mail automatically moving the message to a folder after I flag it. If that happens I'm happy
Applescript can do this, but not automatically, you could set up this rule, then manually Apply Rules (⌥⌘L)
    Rule:
    Applescript:
    tell application "Mail"
repeat with theMessage in (every message of inbox)
if flagged status of theMessage is true then
set mailbox of theMessage to (mailbox "Main")
                        end if
              end repeat
    end tell
The Applescript MUST be placed in: ~/Library/Application Scripts/com.apple.mail/
....although ideally I want the message back to the Inbox after a period of time.
Not sure if that can be done.  Maybe with  launchd and osascript

  • Is there a way to create a rule for Apple Mail that when a certain person is a recipient, make the email plain text?

My boss has a blackberry and when I send pdf attachments and copy him, he cannot see the attachments.  I forget to make the email plain text before sending it to him.  I can use Thunderbird as my client and it works fine but it is not linked to the other apps on my mac like Apple Mail.  Can I make a rule or something for Mail so that when his email address is a recipient of the email, it will send as plain text to him?

I don't think so. Not without setting up an AppleScript and I am not proficient with those.
You can, however, set the follolwing in Mail > Preferences > Composing
Responding: Use the same message format as the original message.
But that would only be for responding to messages sent from his Blackberry.

  • Can't edit rules in Apple Mail.

    Hello there:
For some strange reason if I try to add a new e-mail address editing a rule, well, everything seems to be ok, until I click "Apply" and nothing happens.
    Any help will be welcome.
    Best wishes, as always,

    Hello terriergal:
So far, in my case, no need to delete old rules, just to wait the new ones to be effective, and the two added were working ok.
Sometimes an interesting action before delete rules is to check if something change deleting Apple Mail preferences, or if you prefer just putting the preferences aside for a while.
    Best wishes, as always,

  • Why do my rules in Apple mail keep disappearing?

    Hello,
I am using 10.6.8 OS and using Apple Mail.
I am using the rules function to allow emails from certain addresses to be automatically put into folders.
Recently, the rules have started to disappear when I start up mail and I have to set up the rules once again.
    Here is a screenshot.
Does anyone know why this keeps happening and what I can do to stop it?
    Thanks in advance!

First of all, you cannot control how the recipient may see the attached images that in Mail are Viewed in Place -- this is a function of the recipient's email client, and not anything you do. Some email clients refer to this as Inline View.
Embedding images is a term that really only applies to HTML documents. Mail does not support composing in HTML, but will accept to paste one in if composed in an Editor for HTML.
As to what you may be seeing as you compose, what is the setting on the Image Size button at the bottom right?

  • Mailbox transfer from Apple mail to Windows Outlook 2010

There were thousands of emails in Apple mail email client. I sorted out and maild mailboxes for different types of emails. I separated work-related eails and other stuff related emails and made mailboxes for each. Now I want to move the work-related emails
to my windows laptop in Outlook 2010 email client.
I did try to sync the emails via Imap but the synchronization fails every time I try to sync the emails. I have double checked everything many times before synching but it always fails. Now I am sick of doing it as there are 10k plus mails and the sync is always
    failing.
Is there any other way to transfer the mailbox from apple mail to outlook 2010. It would be very helpful of anyone can guide me to transfer only the work mailbox folder as syncing via Imap starts downloading all the emails including the others.
I just need to transfer the work folder.
Helpful solutions will be really appreciated.

    Hi,
The easiest way to transfer data from Outlook for Mac to a Windows-based Outlook client is to upload to an exchange server. To do this, please refer:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2649169/en-us
However, if that option is not available use one of the methods listed in the link below:

  • Attachments problems with eudora mailbox imported to apple mail.

    greetings,
i am considering moving from eudora to apple mail. i've done a test of importing one of the eudora mailboxes and am having a problem with the attachments.
the attachments to the messages in the eudora mailbox appear to be recognized by the apple mailtool. however, apple will not display the attachments. my test is with a mailbox i keep messages from a friend who travels a lot and sends me jpegs of his trips. the import gave no error messages.
after the import, i can see all the message are in the new mailbox. i can open them fine. however, when viewing messages in apple mail that had attachments, mail shows the message and also shows a list of the pics attached, but it doesn't display the jpgs.
"This message has the following attachments:
    .../Library/Mail/Attachments/xxx.jpg, etc..."
i can go to the attachment directory and find the jpegs there. they open fine in preview... but there seems to be no way to view or double click the filename to open it.
i've searched the local help and this forum and haven't found this thread yet...
does anyone have any experience with importing email with attachments?
is there some setting i need to change in mail to display the attachments or open them?
i appreciate any suggestions or pointers to the solution if somewhere on web...
    jeffery-

ok, i think i found something that fixes this problem...
    Eudora Mailbox Cleaner
    i found it on: http://www.hawkwings.net/plugins.htm
this software seems to bypass apple's "import" and does it's own method of getting the mail files into apple's mailtool... in addition to allowing apple's mail to display the attachments (jpgs, pdfs, etc) this also looks like it preserved the message status... the read messages are marked "read" instead of "unread" also...
i wonder if there is a way to transfer them back, if i decide to go back to eudora after trying apple's mail... my next quest... i will be very flexible to try apple's mail if it is not a 1 way journey, since i'm looking for some solutions in apple's mail... thanks for reading-

  • RULES of Apple Mail

    Dear Guys,
    HAPPY HOLIDAYS from Hong Kong.
I have a question about finding information on the RULES page. Right now, I have about 100+ entries on the RULES page. Everytime I want to edit a specific entry, I have to scroll down the whole list slowly to find that entry with my own aging eyes. The FIND function is simply of no use on the RULES page.
I am wondering if there are ways out.
Thank you so much for your insight.

    Jimmy,
I agree with Austin that you probably have too many rules. I know of no way to apply the Find function to them, but you may find the following AppleScript useful to generate a numbered list of them in the order they appear in the Rules preference.
To use it, open the Script Editor application, copy & paste the text below into a new script window (⌘N, ⌘V), & click the "Run" button. A list of your rules should appear in a new Mail message window. If you find this useful, save the script to some convenient location as an application with Script Editor & you can just double-click it to generate a new list without having to bother with launching the Editor each time.
    tell application "Mail"
    set RulesList to ""
repeat with i from 1 to count of rules
set RuleItem to i & tab & name of rule i & return
set RulesList to RulesList & RuleItem
    end repeat
set RuleMsg to make new outgoing message
    tell RuleMsg
set subject to "My Rules List"
    set content to RulesList
    set visible to true
    activate
    end tell
    end tell
