A Stranger in a Strange Land

I have finally abandoned the world of Windows. My profile will tell you I started with a Commodore 64 and used and built PC's (including the hot one that gave the last blue screen of death I ever see. But I realize how utterly green I am. My wife is a forever Mac user and has finally gotten me to go with the Mac Pro you see below. We are both semi-professional photographers, and Photoshop , Mail, Safari, and things like that are comfortable.
One of my major areas of interest is connecting my Mac Pro to my Sony 898 7.1 Surround Sound System. I have 1800 + lp's from the 60's and 70's; I have a great Audio Techina Pro Turnable, a fine VRC, and a great dual cassette from B & H. I also have an Edirol UF-4 analog to digital audio box, a Canopus ADV 110 video analog to digital converter box. I have Toast, Logic Express, and get anything else I need.
Sounds great right? Folks, I am in kindergarten again. In my PC I went from a Creative X-fi Platinum with the 5.25 front bay with optical, coaxial, RCA, Midi, the works. When I could keep XP running, I could get some things done (their "Service Pack 3 gave me the coup de gras). Now I have all this great gear, one of the best computers in the world, and I am clueless as to how to connect it properly. I openly admit that I am "cable challenged", an RCA dinosaur in a optical, etc, world.
This my be off topic for this forum; if so please let me know and kindly direct me to a more appropriate forum. I have to tell you that I am a bit overwhelmed and would be extremely thankful if someone would be able to point to toward the light. Direct email is fine ([email protected]). Here is fine. I know there must be many other PC refugees here. May I have political asylum and a cup of java? I thank in advance anyone who knows angst of the PC blues and would be willing to assist another pilgrims.
Thanks and best wishes,

Thanks again to those who have given me leads as I relearn how to spend time actually working instead of trying to "fix" some miserable Windows or PC problem.
Here is what I have got and what hope to do with it all; needless to say I think the Mac Pro should suffice to form the heart and soul of my projects
I have a collection of over 1800 lp's in pristine shape;mostly from the 60's and 70's, with a fair sampling back into the 40's as well as newer lp's issued as people realize a couple of things: the sound has a warmth unique to vinyl, and that an entire genre of art : the LP album cover was snuffed out over night. For example, you will NEVER see a CD or DVD cover like Jefferson Airplane's *Long John Silver* or Frank Zappa and the Mothers *Freak Out!*.
So, my first dream was to copy and archive the entire collection on a hard drive for storage (along with digital photographs) in a safe deposit box. Then I noticed how many rare and hard to find things in have in audio and VCR format, as well a desire to make archival copies of DVD's and CD's (remember when they told us how "nearly indestructible" they were?! What a laugh.
My wife and I are also semi-professional digital photographers which Mac had always done better at.
So those have been by goals, often ending up in a smoking blue crater of death and despair. But now I a have the best Mac Pro I could afford and am ready to go after it again.
Here is a more complete list of my A/V gear:
1. Sony STR DE-898, 7.1 Surround Sound, Phono and more ins and outs than I can imagine they had on Apollo 11. (OPT, COAX, RCA, etc.: I used to just have to tin the wires, plug in RCA's and it was done!).
2. Audio Technica AT PL-120 professional turntable. Plays everything from 78's (got a lot) to 33 1/3. Replaced my great old Pioneer PL-400 that died peacfully after almost 40 years. Has both phono and Line Out setting to use internal pre-amp. No one at Best Buy knew what a pre-amp was! Oy gevault!
3. JVC Dual Audio Cassette Desk
4. JVC VHS/DVD Combo Deck; has NEVER worked well to copy VCR's to DVD, but puts out nice clean video from VHS tapes.
That's the main show. Here are the correct models on the adaptor boexes;
1, Edirol UA04FX analog to digital converter. Powered by USB bus with optical, RCA, and MIDI in and out. A friend gave (yes, gave) me a 1966 Chet Atkins Signature Hollow Body Electric Guitar (Serial # 96526) that really wants to play with garage band! I think I should be able to plug the guitar in here.
2. Canopus ADVC 110 Analog to Digitial capture for VCR; it connects to the Mac via Firewire. You run the VCR into it with standard yellow, red, and white RCA Connectors.
3. I also have an EyeTV that I do have working just fine.
So, a lot of stuff, but know that other folks, more connection savvy than me have been doing this and that Mac is a good platform. Software wise I have Logic Express, Sound Soap, and Toast 8 Titanium. I hope this fills in the holes in my other post. Again, my deep thanks and appreciation for the very kind assistance and patience as leave Windows behind and try to regain sanity in computing through Mac!
Best wishes to all,
Jim

    Gentlepeople:
    I got a Blackberry Curve 3G 9300 (v6.0.0.534 Platform 6.6.6.200) a few days ago and I feel like I jumped into the deep end of the pool.  Before the weekend, I had only used a cell phone -- any cell phone -- only once before. As a result, the learning curve for me on the Blackberry isn't just steep, it's bloody vertical.
    My provider is Koodo, and they have been very patient with my newbie status. I only got a basic plan, so I don't get a lot of the extras. My fundamental reason for getting the phone in the first place was because pay phones in my area just don't exist anymore. Trying to call home when I was away was a real frustration. So far, I've plodded through getting on the web, and learning how to retrieve voice mail. I still don't know how to text yet, but I think I'm getting close. About the only other thing I really want to do  is to learn how to transfer a picture of my dog (an insane border collie) from my computer to the Blackberry  to use as wall paper. I've downloaded the Blackberry program to help with doing that . . .another part of the learning curve.
    Thanks for listening. I look forward to learning more from these pages . . .assuming (a big assumption) that I understand what you're talking about in the first place.
    Cheers. . .

    Do you have your email on the BlackBerry setup yet? If so, from your PC, email yourself that picture.
    Once the email arrives on the BlackBerry, scroll down to the attachment and open it or save it to your BlackBerry Media Card. Open the picture and press the Menu key (the key with the BlackBerry dots logo, left of the trackpad) and choose "Set as Wallpaper"

    Mark, it's EERIE that you should say this to me today because this is exactly what I have been thinking! I can put a song on a page with one eye shut now, and I can zip around those files pretty well (except for the recent fiasco where I didn't even look at the right folder). I also notice that the level of my writing is sounding more technical and familiar with digital world jargon. I remember how you told me I could do it, and you were right. You all were right and I feel more knowledgeable and at a point where I suspect that I can take steps on my own. HTML is a strange land, but just being able to edit that .js file and FIND it by navigating for it in Text Edit has made me feel much more competent.
    Before iWeb I didn't realize what Text Edit was for. I used it to take quick fast short notes. I never understood that concept of "opening something up in so and so application." • In editing .js filea, on file does not exist in my iDisk files....

    Task that I was involved in:
    I added two songs to two pages. After adding the second song, the publishing process went badly. A message appeared saying that there was a problem publishing and I should publish all to .Mac. I did so; it went fine. After that I had to edit about 13 .js files (the pages that have songs on them). The process was going smoothly UNTIL:
    One .js file (gotten from the Safari address of that page) was not in my iDisk iWeb files. That file name is: Us%together%20photos.html
    INTERESTING TO NOTE:
    There IS a file that "sounds" like the contextual equivalent and it is named: Chris and Lorna .js But, it is not at all like the other .js files that I have edited out in the past. Nonetheless, I searched that entire file for the items involved in the edits: "height 32, " "loop," "autoplay," and "controller" but did not see them. The entire terrain of that page looked different from all the other .js files; it was not the same.
    I have cleared the cache, deleted past history, clicked to a site outside my website even while knowing that this is not a required action for the issue that I am trying to solve.
    After not finding that page (Us%Together&20Photos.html), I returned to iWeb and made more changes of the page names, so that whereas the Jump-Off page used to say Chris & Lorna, I changed it to say Chris and Lorna without the ampersand. (The "Chris and Lorna" should not be a problem, because the name of the page in the address is Us%Together%20Photos.html and that is what matters when searching for .js files.)
    (Further clarification: There is a page called Chris and Lorna, but it functions as a jump-off page, a portal to two other slideshow pages: One of our wedding, and the other, that page in question which cannot be found in the iDisk. On the page in the text it says Chris and Lorna, but the ADDRESS of the page says Us%Together%20Photos.html.)
    But even in doing so I felt that it was not necessary to make that change, since in the past that wording gave no trouble.
    I AM CONSIDERING THE FOLLOWING:
    Make a few significant changes on that page, like shift pictures around, change picture caption wording, etc and then republish that page in the hopes that this republishing will force the production of a new .js file with the name "Us%Together%20Photos.html
    This is an important page in my website and one that I do not want to lose.
    Everything I consider possibly significant has been noted in this post. I would appreciate any insight on this issue..... Thank you.

  • My netbook says my built in webcam for dv6-1259dx does not exist.

    So I tried to use my webcam the otherday but it wouldn't let me, I've been searching for the last two days for a solution but cant find any. It's been fine till the otherday and I haven't done anything nor deleted anything that could have caused it to not work. I have downloaded the hp mediasmart webcam driver and updated it, updated the BIOS, but it says that It can't find my webcam. I've been searching through the forums and I've tried updateing everything (failed), tried using device manager (the image device that the forums suggest updating does not exist), I do not have multiple webcam programs on my computer that would cause interferience, I've scaned for hardware changes but it gives me no suggestions nor does it notice any problams, i've basically tried everything HP customer help could give me, but no luck. If anyone got a solution please help! Thank you

  • How does one get a simple URL link onto the Designer Form?

    Greetings:
    Thank heavens for small favors, kudos to Adobe for Designer and its basic email functionality.
    One annoying thing, I am finding it impossible to put a simple link on the Designer Form. Likewise, if I open the form in Acrobat, the link icon on the toolbar is greyed and unavailable, so I cannot select text and turn it into a link.
    I have found that I can make a bookmark with the form open in Acrobat and make that a link to a URL, but I cannot specify the initial view to show the bookmarks open, so there is a very good chance this bookmark/link will never be seen.
    The HTTP button help states:
    "The HTTP submit button operates like a standard button object with these settings:
    Control Type set to Submit
    Submit Format set to URL-Encoded Data
    Submit To URL set to use the http: protocol."
    which doesn't sound like it's meant to function like a simple link, and trying it anyway I get an error message that the url is incorrect.
    Any ideas on this?
    regards,
    stevenjs

    I guess one can't paste html in these posts, here's the code, minus all the html tags, and the brackets for the meta tag, title tag and body tag.
    Opening URL in new window from Acrobat.
    The Code for the first HTML page.
    meta http-equiv="refresh" content="2; URL=Original.pdf"
    title New Page 1 title
    BODY onload="window.open('startNewPDF.htm', 'newWindow')"
    Code for the second HTML page which forces the new document to stay on top.
    meta http-equiv="refresh" content="3; URL=New.pdf"
    title New Page 1 title
    body onBlur="setTimeout('self.focus()',2500)"
    By the way, I figured out where to apply javascript to a button. Being new to Designer, I did not see that slender script interface at the top.
    James' xfa.host.gotoURL("http://www.yoursite.com",0); does indeed work like a charm. I just selected the button, selected Javascript instead of FormCalc, Selected "click" from the event dropdown, and pasted in xfa.host.gotoURL("http://www.yoursite.com",0); (changing the URL of course).
    regards,

  • Inserting a single cell

    Okay, I can insert a whole row or column, but how do I insert a single cell? Say I need to add a cell at G8, moving the data down one cell. Rather than trying to select 325 cells and move them down.
    Simple in Excel, but I'm giving Numbers a reason to not use Excel.
    Anyone?

    I still submit that you haven't "grokked" the Numbers yet. I have used it extensively and have never needed this feature.
    Well, I guess it's true I have not "grokked" Numbers yet. And yes, the data was entered inconsistantly, Jax, and that's the problem I'm trying to fix. All of which would be easier if I had a simple Add Single Cell command. Goodness, it's not like I'm asking for the Red Sea to part, just a single column.
    I'm dealing with 2 tables, each with 12 categories, 60 entries per category, and I'm trying to compare the two. I sorted each by category and then by entry. Then I copied and pasted the appropriate columns from Table 2 over to Table 1. After moving columns around (which is easier than in Excel, admittedly), I'm going down the columns and looking for discrepancies. Finding one, I need to bump a column down a cell so I can add the missing entry so both columns are exactly the same. There are cells missing in both columns, so I can't assume one is more correct than the other.
    So I guess the Martian thing to do (being a stranger in a strange land, i.e., a non-Microsoft spreadsheet), would be create 12 different tables based on twelve different categories. Of course, then I'll need to combine them back together because sometimes I sort by entry, not just category. Effective multiplying my efforts by 12.
    Oh, and I was well aware of the demo, thank you very much. I'm a few months passed the 30 day limit before this project came about. I bought the software in an attempt to cut away from Microsoft Office. Surely y'all can understand that. Going cold turkey wasn't such a good idea, I guess.

  • Address book of dreck

    My Mac address book is filled with individual address cards that include two or three email addresses that are patently wrong. Some of the addresses belong to the next entry on the list of cards and some seem to be rogue addresses from strange lands.
    I've upgraded the Mac Mail / Address Book list from Sys 9. Is this jumble of addresses the result of continuous upgrades or did spambots cause this?
    Thanks.

    Except, of course for you AB problem. Start a new AB, do it a bit at a time, those contacts you use the most. Then just add them to the new AB as you go. You may have to deal with 2 ABs for a while...

  • Hello...  iDVD hates me....

    Howdy,
    I'm a Apple newbie, and having a bit of a time getting iDVD to work right. Please bear with me. I've searched the forums here (and a few other places) but to no avail.
    I am trying to create a DVD using iDVD. I've imported and edited my movied from my DV camcorder into iMovie and have edited it down to the right size.
    I have 90 GB available on my HD and 2 GB of RAM. The movie in iDVD consists of a menu menu with a still image and then three submenus. Each submenu has 3-4 video clips and a sill image from the associated clip next to the name.
    All video clips are fully encoded prior to starting the burn process. I am using th 16:9 aspect ratio.
    On to the problem...when I go to burn the DVD, it gets "stuck" with the beachball spinning and no progress in what seems indefinate period on the last (or next to last) menu.
    I've tried deleting the offending menu only to have it get stuck on another. I've gone all the way down to one single menu (which it processed just fine the previous time) only to have it get "stuck" again.
    On my current attempt that is running as I write this it says it is on menu 2 of 4 with 30 minutes remaining. It's been there for almost two hours now.
    Is this young Jedi just not being patient enough? Is this normal?
    Thank you in advance.

    Ugh! And I thought I was doing so well with the detail...I was all proud of myself, too.
    Anyways, iMovie is iMovie '08. And I know you didn't ask, but iDVD is iDVD '08
    The camcorder is a JVC GR-D370U, and I was having an issue with importing it initially, but after searching these forums and finding others with the same issue, I followed their recommended consensus and upgraded to 10.5. After I did, the import went flawlessly.
    The theme is "Center Stage" (Side question: at the top of the themes it says "7.0 Themes" If it is iDVD '08, shouldn't it be 8.0 Themes?)
    Disk Image...hmm..no. Trying that now. (Didn't even realize that was an option...) I'll update the tread when I have something to report back.
    They were encoded on the hard drive (please remember I'm a Mac newbie here...) in the iMovie projects directory (under movies under my name under users under Macintosh HD) They were encoded using best performance (per Apple's recommendations in the help file.) They were automatically encoded in the background since I am using the 7.0 theme and best performance (also gleened from the same help file...)
    Stranger in a strange land here...
    Thanks,
    Ed

  • Intel iMac macbook air

    After 2.5 hours of migrating iMac info thru Airportto the Air, some features are unavailable on the Air: iphoto "can not be opened", and "can not load preferance pane" for Desktop & Screensaver, Spotlight, and Energy Saver.  Any ideas how I might get these features going again would be greatly appreciated.
    Also, in checking Preference Panes(pains) I noticed the following and I'd not sure how to handle if at all. Some consequitive listings show the following extensions:  .plist  ,  .plist.lockfile  ,  .plist~orig    and I don't know if I should delete any or all of these. Could these files be in conflict?
    Thanx from a "stranger in a strange land":  Tom in Japan

    Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    First, empty the Trash.
    Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
    The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "41." Please post it in a reply.

  • Is There a Way to Address RH Frameset Properties, like border?

    Greetings:
    Where in the collection of RH files is the project frameset defined, and is there any way to change its properties?
    One of the ugliest things in all of the RH templates is the frameset border. I'm NOT talking about how the frames are set, how wide or narrow, or what percentage of the window they occupy, or how many frames are in the set, or what pages are allocated to load into each by default, or how the are laid out. I know there's some sort of primitive interface for addressing such things, at least in RH 8.
    I'm talking about the properties of the frames and the frameset, specifically the border, that fat sickly grey line that just barely works with the Titanium (black & white & grey) template, and with no other template. Is there a way to have no border? A thinner border? A different color border? Is this even supported in CSS or in current browsers?
    Also, on the subject of ugly templates, is there anyone or any company out there which offers RH skin templates way, way better than those included in the RH box? That will custom build a skin based on your custom design? Or design one to match an existing support web site's design?
    Seems to me all of these HAT's take ugly lessons ;-)
    Many thanks.

    "For the margins, open whtdhtml.htm and add a padding-left for the BODY. This will indent the books/topics. (Note that this is in an output file. Save the output file and copy it somewhere save. Paste the file in the output every time you generate it.)"
    -- better still, go to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2\Adobe RoboHelp 8\RoboHTML\WebHelp5Ext\template_stock/whtdhtml.htm. Of all the variable stuff in there, the body leftmargin and marginwidth are fixed values. Change them, and your Nav will enjoy some breathing room every time you re-compile in both IE and Firefox, no need to keep changing the output file.
    "What do you mean by wrapping the titles inside the frame? No horizontal scrolling?"
    -- Yes, no scrolling. You set the width for the nav pane, then let the book/topic titles wrap inside that. This were easy enough to do if I could find the actual file that is loaded into the nav pane, but it seems to be completely generated and not accessible (or what am I missing?)
    If this were an editable file, you could put a table or div inside, set the width to the width of the frame/pane, and it would wrap. Actually, even if scripted RH should be doing this. Verbose titles are the most informative, crazy to keep them short just because the app won't let them wrap and to avoid the dreaded scroll bar. If they have to script-write that pane's page they should write a table or div container to the same width as the frame and let the nav text wrap!
    Another question related to frameset/frames. I find that no amount of changing of frame tag properties in the .skn file produces a change in the border color (frameborder="1" bordercolor="#000000"), though I can remove the frame altogether with frameborder="0".
    Curously, if I create a new frame in RH and ascribe topics to the panes and add a bordercolor to it, the border color shows up nicely. What gives?
    And last but far from least, why is it not possible to create a new RH project and determine a different frameset for it instead of the default top toolbar, left nav, topic right? This can not be changed, either before or after a project is created? The create > new frame just gives you a framset topic, but has no effect on the project frameset.  What gives there??

  • Fetch crashes

    When I try to open Fetch on my iMac, I get an immediate "Application quit unexpectedly" message. I need to edit a web page that is not on iWeb. When I last did so (some two years ago at least) I was on my previous Mac (a Powerbook) and Fetch was a small dog who was very cooperative about running back and forth. Now I am a stranger in a strange land and nothing is working!
    I looked at a couple of discussions and as a result can now report that my Fetch program is version 5.3.
    Any advice and suggestions will be gratefully received.

    Another solution, if you haven't already done so, might be to try using Fetch 5.0.5 instead and see if it works satisfactorily:

    Just did an update download this morning so I suppose it's up to date.  I'm almost totally ignorant about the thing. Trying to run it for my son.
    Can't get the dictionary.
    Saw this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFZYzyYMlnU  and have tried all that.  Had to recover the notes icon first and managed to do that. But now I don't get the 'define' option that he talks about/shows.
    Read a thread here about it but it was concerned with Safari. When I went there it was a strange land. Couldn't make any sense of it at all.
    All I want to know is: how to use the dictionary on his itouch? Is it possible?

    you have replied again with a query about which ver of the OS i've got - i got an email showing that - but that post of yours isn't here on the listing at
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/25526471?ac_cid=op123456#25526471?ac_cid=o p123456
    or if it is I can't see it which amounts to the same thing (customer always being right, if you see what I mean. these remarks prompted by apple asking me to complete a survey on how satisfied with this process just a minute ago)
    i posted last night about no arrow and i don't see that post, either.
    but, yes, there's no arrow to touch to bring up another choice - 'define'.
    haven't got the machine here but i downloaded the latest upgrade a couple of days ago, when i began this business of looking for the dictionary.  so i am sure i have the latest ver.
    i have finally managed to get itunes onto a computer here where it doesn't lock up the whole system and take 100% cpu.  so i can download a dictionary i guess if i can't solve this.
    of course it would be easier and nicer, 'cleaner', if i were to get the machine working as intended and using the dictionary supplied.
    you are still with me but i had to post in another area somewhere, didn't i? in the ipod area. no responses from there at all. why, i wonder?

  • STRANGER GETS MY LAND LINE NUMBER FROM MY IPHONE CALL

    Using my iPhone, I called a stranger in error.  He answered, whereby I realized my mistake.  Instead of being courteous, as I should have been, and saying, "Sorry, wrong number," I simply hung up.  This apparently upset him, because he subsequently called my land line and left a threatening message, telling me never to call again.  So, hmmm, how did he get my land line number?  I'm guessing because it showed up, on his end, when I initially called him with my iPhone.  It was associated with or attached to my iPhone number.  I know that when a certain relative calls me, more than one of her numbers shows up on my call-back notification.
    What do I do to prevent this?  I must be able to control and limit the information about me that people I call can get.

    There's absolutely no way your land line # was transmitted as CID when calling from your iPhone.  If this person found out your land line #, he looked it up based on the name and/or cell # of your iPhone.
    The only way he could have your land line show when you called his cell phone is if he already has your full contact info in his phone, including  your land line - i.e. you are already known to him.
    To avoid this in the future:
    1. Disable caller id:  Settings > Phone > Show My Caller ID > OFF
    2. If you don't want to do that, have your carrier transmit only your cell # without your name.  Your name can still be researched, but usually require payment
    3. Get an unlisted land line phone.
    4. Research all the things that can be done with a baseball bat.

  • Strange problem with Subviews on 1.0 Beta

    Hi,
    I'm having a strange problem with SubViews on 1.0 Beta. I'm not sure If I'm being stupid and have done something wrong, or if there's a problem here.
    My application is directly based on one of the examples, so the structure etc is almost identical. I've simplified the files below to avoid confusing the issue.
    The default landing page (greeting.jsp) looks like this:
    <%@ taglib declarations for HTML and CORE taglibs %>
    <HTML>
    <HEAD><title>Insulation Layer Demo</title></HEAD>
    <body bgcolor="white">
    <f:view>
    <jsp:include page="sysstatus.jsp" />
    <!-- other strictly HTML content -->
    </f:view>
    </body>
    </HTML>
    sysstatus.jsp looks like this:
    <%@ taglib declarations for HTML and CORE taglibs %>
    <f:subview id="SystemStatusView">
    <h:form id="systemStatusForm">
    <p><h:selectboolean_checkbox id="System1Available" value="#{SystemStatus.system1Available}"/>System 1<br/>
    <h:selectboolean_checkbox id="System2Available" value="#{SystemStatus.system2Available}"/>System 2</p>
    <p><h:command_button id="submit" action="success" value="submit" /></p>
    </h:form>
    </f:subview>When I view this page, the checkboxes all seem to work okay (in that their state is preserved across calls etc), but the formatting is very screwy. The resulting page looks something like:
    <chkbox1> <chkbox2> <Submit>
    System 1
    System 2
    <Other HTML content from greeting.jsp>When I look at the HTML source code being generated, it is genuinly being generated as above, that is, all the form tags first, and then the rest of the content. Interestinly, I tried adding a ${SystemStatus.system2Available} into the body text, and it was rendered as literal text (i.e. not evaluated as EL), which is very curious -- makes me wonder if the included file is included as text, rather than JSP, although the custom taglibs and <f:form> tags etc are not in the generated HTML.
    If I lift all the content between the <h:form> tags (inclusive) out of sysstatus.jsp and put it in greeting.jsp in place of the <jsp:include> tag, all is well.
    Any ideas? All help gratefully recieved!
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Personally, I think it is a bug in the rendering model of JSF itself because if you include any non-JSF tags, they don't get rendered according to my understanding of the what the spec says (in the location the tags are written).
    The only workaround that I could come up with is to use straight JSF tags in all of your layers. Things are then rendered the way that they "should" be rendered.
    You could try wrapping all of your HTML tags in <f:verbatim> tags and see if that helps.
    Good luck!
    David
