A stumper..any ideas

Crashed while installing software. Now I cant load many 3rd party software: Office,Quicken,Acrobat,photoshop CS. Ive reset permissions,NVRAM... removed battery,reinstalled... wiped the hard drive twice/reinstalled from time machine and OS disk No luck...ideas?

1. Insert the Mac OS X 10.5 Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
   2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
      *Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
   3. Click the Erase tab.
   4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
   5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
   6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase, one pass... after completion hopefully you'll be able to get a good install.

You did try tapping on one of them in that list in the iPod app! This has happened to me and I was able to start the movie from there. You could try restarting the iPad, go into the iPod app and try again.
Now I'm stumped unless it is a corrupt download. You did download right onto the iPad - correct? If you downloaded in iTunes, there is a Move tab or function that you have to select to transfer the movies to the iPad when you sync. They just don't sync over without selecting move.

TimeMachine no longer backups. No error message just seems to stall. Any ideas?

Up to 4 days ago Timemachine was working flawlessly. Now my macbook pro will start a backup and them seemingly just stall. No errors given. The same is true for a manual or automatic backup. I haven't installed anything new on the system so I'm a bit stumped. I am backing up to a time capsule (new model) which has plenty of space. My wife's macbook pro also backups to the same capsule and there are no issues with hers. I can move data from the macbook pro to the time capsule without any lag. I've also scanned my hard drive and disk utility comes up clean. Restarting does not change anything. Any ideas?

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
* Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
* Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

IMac 27" flashes to white on startup, chimes, then goes to a black screen. It works fine on an external monitor. Any ideas how I can fix this?

I've got a late 2009 iMac 27". When I start it up, it chimes and makes all the normal sounds. The screen flashes white for 2 seconds, then goes black. The iMac starts up (if I use an external monitor, it works fine) but the screen remains black.
Weirdly, if I start it up on Bootcamp as a Windows machine, it flashes white, then flashes briefly a few seconds later on the Windows logo, then goes to black.
I've reformatted the hard drive and performed a clean install of Lion. I've got some Apple knowledge, so I've taken the front bezel off and checked for loose connections. Everything appears fine. All 4 diagnostic lights are on on the logic board.
I'm stumped. I don't want to splash out on a new LCD screen if it's the inverter or something else that's the problem
Any ideas welcome!

Ah. I'm not able to run the hardware test because it only works on the main screen. There's no obvious way to switch to an external monitor when AHT is running, which is ridiculous if the hardware fault concerns the screen! The problem isn't with the backlight - there is no dimmed image on the screen, it is just off.
I'll just have to use it with an external monitor, I guess - which defeats the purpose of buying an iMac!

Greetings: I have just acquired an older mini mac (2006 1.66 ghz core 2 duo) Anyway, it had Tiger 10.4 on it and the Bluetooth worked. I upgraded to Snow Leopard and everything works fine - except Bluetooth. The Bluetooth icon isn't there. Any ideas?

I have just acquired an older mini mac (2006 1.66 ghz core 2 duo) Anyway, it had Tiger 10.4 on it and the Bluetooth worked for the wireless Apple keyboard and mouse. I upgraded to Snow Leopard and everything works fine - everything except Bluetooth.
The Bluetooth icon does not exist in the System Preferenc screen.
I tried to download Bluetooth from Apple site but the message I got told me that I didn't need it.
Under Finder, Utilities, I found Bluetooth File Exchange but the message I got was that I had to connect a Bluetooth device to my computer.
I have to admit that I have no idea what's going on here. I am hoping to avert the need to try another complete re-install of Snow Leopard.
Any ideas?

Thanks Barry - I found the file and trie to send it to trash. The response: (This item cannot be trashed as it it owned by the system).
After dancing around with PRAM and SMC and turning on while holding the power-cntrl-option-shift and heavens knows what else, I now have the Bluetooth symbol on the top of the menu bar but it is ghoseted and has a squiggly line through it. This, I didn't have before so I read this as some progress. It notes that "Bluetooth is not available">
However, the Bluetooth icon is still missing from the System Preferences window - you know, between "network" and "sharing".
You note that you reckon the issue is not software based and you may be correct. The reason that I wonder about that though, is that before I installed Snow Leopard, the keyboard and mouse both paired with the box under the Tiger 10.4. That leads me to conclude that hardware is functional and that there is some screwy little bit of software that is not cooperating.
If I could delete Bluetooth from the system and re-install a fresh version, that might help. Or, is there a way I can use the Snow Leopard install disc and only load in Bluetooth?

Strange keyboard controller behavior in Mainstage - any ideas?

I just upgraded to Logic 9 and noticed some weird behavior in Mainstage.
Whenever I trigger a note on my Roland D-50 (I'm using it as a MIDI controller), sounds cut off right after I let go of the key. My sustain pedal doesn't work either. I also have a Yamaha P-85 and a M-Audio O2 which I also use as controllers and everything works fine.
When I load Logic itself, everything sounds fine when playing on the D-50 which really has me stumped as to what the issue is.
Any ideas? Is there something fishy about the MIDI spec on the D-50?

Apparently this is a bug - I filled out a product Feedback form on Apple's website.
For whatever reason, the D-50 sends NOTE ON->NOTE OFF->ALL OFF (CC# 123) MIDI events for every note you play.
All apps I use (Garage Band, Live, Reason, Logic, Sonar, Cubase) simply choose to ignore the last ALL OFF event except for Mainstage.
Hopefully Apple will address this soon.

Ball of death after 10.5.8 upgrade, any ideas why?

I have just upgraded to 10.5 and then to 10.5.8 doing a archive and install, after this upgrade my mac starts, shows the login screen, I enter my password, and the login process starts, this is where the problem starts, most of the time the dock will appear, but no menu bar at the top of the screen, and no drives (two internal drives) shown on the desktop, then the ball of death just sits their for ever, i can move my mouse around freely, but thats about it, if i hold the ball of death over an icon in the dock it turns back into a black pointer, then if I say click on a icon in the dock, the icon stays selected and dimmed and no application activation happens, after this I cannot select anything, and the ballremains.
I managed to create another user account (eventually) and successfully logged into it, everything started and showed and worked as it should in this account, yet if I try going back to my other account the problems start all over.
I reinstalled 10.5 and this seemed to work ok, then I applied the 10.5.8 update again, and basically the above repeated it's self.
My mac isn't making any fan noises like the processor is trying to do something, and im working on the test user account to send this post
i'm stumped, has anybody got any ides about what may be going on?

forgot tot mention, this update was done using the combo updater, on G5 PPC

I have managed to get the system prefs window open and navigate around the different features with out a problem, thing is my volumes still do not show on the desktop.
Some other interesting things are happening also, say I click on a folder in the dock, it opens up to reveal in a nice blackish looking window and a view of all the other folders with in, it gives me an option to click a button that says "reveal in finder" I click that and the window collapses and nothing happens, I would expect it to show in columns or something like that. I am also experiencing repeated dialogs (6 to 10) being thrown up saying "The Application "Finder" cannot be launched -1712, plus the continual spinning of the ball of gloom.
So im thinking their is a serious issue with the finder, of which I have trashed the plst, any thoughts?

This is an idea I've been tossing around and wanted to know if there was something easy out there that would accomplish this...
I'd like to mount a monitor in one of our common areas for the management team and have it display current statuses of some of our IT features/services and maybe quick bits on what we are currently working on, major issues, etc...
I've seen some company lobbies with similar setups that display company-wide information, weather, etc.. so I know the capability is out there but I don't know squat regarding what that would entail. The easier, the better, naturally... as I don't want this to turn into an entire job position updating it, haha. But something that I could hopefully remotely update would be nice.

My macbook pro no longer connects to my TV with the mini dvi to hdmi adapter. It was working fine now I cant get it to output to the Tv. Any ideas?

My Macbook pro no longer outputs to my vizio led tv. It was working fine now I cant get any picture. It just says no signal. It is not the hdmi or the adapter because it works fine with my other tv. Since you say that the same connectors work on your other TV is suggests that the fault is not in the connectors but your Vizio TV. I would check the settings on the Vizio TV. Verify that is is set to receive HDMI input. Perhaps you or some one else has inadvertently changed them. Pressing the wrong buttons on a remote control device can do that. (I am assuming no changes were made in SYSTEM PREFERENCES>DISPLAYS)

I "upgraded" to FF4, now it doesnt work properly, wont open pages, will open blank tabs when i click on a link, tried to go back to the older one but that doesnt work now either, have tested it with Safari and it opens everything fine. Any ideas?

After upgrading to firefox 4 im now having a lot of problems using the browser.
if i try an open a link in a new tab it will just open up a blank tab, if i click on links or even type in the google search bar at the top it doesnt do anything, it just says "done" and the circle thing stops as if im on the page already, have tested it with Safari doing the same things and Safari works fine. I'd swap but all my bookmarks and passwords are in Firefox so id rather stay with that.
I tried going back to the older version of firefox (3.5 or something) but seems the bugs are here to stay now.......so.......any ideas? because its really annoying, shouldn't have "upgraded".
Is there a new patch coming out anytime soon or should i start getting used to Safari?

I would copy over the entire thing if you have room. With iTunes 10.4 though, you can download any previous iTunes purchases you have made in the past with your current iTunes account. While in iTunes, look at the left hand side of your screen and select "Purchases" and look at the bottom right corner of the screen and select "Download Previous Purchases". If you have an iPhone, iPod and/or iPad...you can do the same thing from each device. Nice new feature...just remember that those ripped CDs need a back-up!!! Enjoy...

Example I will text a friend...she will not see my text but the reply comes to both of us. It seems to be random which ones. Any ideas how to correct this

Yup, get your own AppleID.
The messages that are being sent to both phones are technically not text, they are Apple's iMessage. They use the data part, not the texting part. So if you have an iPad or a Mac computer, you can send/receive the iMessages there too.

This issue is blocking my access to iTunes and any other file from my home computer. It keeps on telling me that I have to autorise my computer to pass on files, yet, it seems, for all this to happen, I need to get logged in through the phone's Apple ID. This of course is different to my one on my computer - and I have no password for it.
This phone is not stolen!! I payed still a fair bit for it. Am still in contact with the previous owner. He doesn't know how to fix the problem either.

Settings>general>resets>erase all content and settings.
That will put it back to its out of the box state. Set it up with your own apple Id.

Try switching it back from landscape to vertical. Or, go to settings and see if you have any special setting turned on that enable only landscape view. Also, try hooking it up to your computer and charging it to see what happens.

HT3705 Has anyone any ideas why a Pages file v09 exported from v5 bloats from around 212kb to 5.9mb? I had to export existing template files back from the latest version to v09 due to limited features in latest version.

Recently updated Pages because of Mavericks update, quickly discovered how limited new version is, exported altered files back to Pages 09 format and re-opened using earlier Pages. In amending to re-save as templates again noticed a 212kb file has bloated to 5.9mb.
Has anyone any ideas or experience as it will not take long to fill up a 1TB drive at this rate! - I had left behind PC's and MS Office and was reasobaly happy using Pages for business, but it looks like Office for Mac is now going to b eneeded.

Yes, I opened them all with 5 then re-saved as v5 templates. Then realised other problems with v5 so exported them all back v09 as xxx.pages files. Used some with v09 and noticed they had all increased.
I just checked again and noticed that the initial v5 saved templates had typically increased from 412kb to 1.1MB (they do have 4 graphics) - then after exporting the templates are 5.9MB in v09 an dthe files are still 412kb.
I had a similar problem many years ago using RTF files with Word and they kept bloating everytime you edited and saved due to saved or linked graphics?
