"A Sync Server is already running on this computer"

I noticed many messages like this in Console:
2006-06-13 11:37:33.525 SyncServer[703] A Sync Server is already running on this computer, exiting process.
2006-06-13 11:52:33.515 SyncServer[750] A Sync Server is already running on this computer, exiting process.
2006-06-13 12:07:33.527 SyncServer[789] A Sync Server is already running on this computer, exiting process.
2006-06-13 12:22:33.521 SyncServer[835] A Sync Server is already running on this computer, exiting process.
I also noticed that although .Mac was set to sync every hour, it had not synced on my computer for a couple of months. As a result, I was getting frustrated about appointments and contact details not appearing on my home calendar when I'd write them into iCal at work: it's hard to have a social life when you keep forgetting dinner dates and your excuse is "I don't know what happened to the appointment I wrote into iCal a week ago!"
So I switched .Mac to sync manually, clicked the "Sync Now" button, then switched .Mac to sync automatically. The messages are gone for now, and the changes I've been making are finally appearing in .Mac.
I know there was discussion about this topic on other threads, but they've been archived now. The last thread I saw was this one: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1453973
I'm guessing the sync server is doing a naive check for the existence of a PID file, without checking that there is a sync server running with that PID, and at some point the sync server crashed without deleting its PID file. Thus when the sync server starts up it sees the PID file and assumes that the previous sync server is still running.
Does anyone know if the syncserver is doing a PID/lock file check? Where is that file stored? If there is such a file, I'll make sure to delete it when the machine starts up.
iMac Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

At a later stage, I tried checking the .Mac status. When I opened the System Preferences panel for .Mac, I got a message saying "There was a problem with the sync operation / .Mac login failed. [OK]"
Now I've got the "Sync Server is already running on this computer" messages again. This time there was actually a SyncServer running - I killed it (and "2006-06-13 17:53:37.837 SyncServer[1945] Handling SIGTERM in kqueue callback from runloop" came up in Console). Now I can check the .Mac Sync panel and it tells me the last sync was at 16:48.
I can manually sync (click the "Sync Now" button) and it works fine. There is now a SyncServer running, which started at the time I clicked the "Sync Now" button.

Suggest posting to the .Mac forum. Alternatively, turn off synching.

  • ITunes could not sync information to the iPod "...." because another sync session was already running.

Normally, syncing my iPod Touch is no problem. However, last time I tried to sync, the process hung up and even after half an hour the progress bar would not finish. I ended up having to force quit iTunes. Now when I try to sync I get 2 messages: the first says "iTunes could not back up the iPod "......" because a session could not be started with the iPod." as soon as I close that message another appears: "iTunes could not sync information to the iPod "......." because another sync session was already running."
There seems to be a half finished sync file saved somewhere and a new one cannot be started. However, I can't continue the partial one either so I'm stuck.
Other than that my iPod Touch 4 is operating normally. Syncing with Mac Book Pro.
How do I fix this problem?

    WHat do yo meanby rebooting?
Is is a reset like defined in the users guide:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

I attempted to open Final Cut Express this morning and got the message, "Protection Error - This application cannot continue because another application with an identical serial number is already running on another computer on your network".
I have no other FCE on any computers...this is the only mac running (iMac 2008 model).  I used a preference manager app and deleted preferences...didn't work.  I uninstalled and reinstalled FCE...didn't work.
This is the first time I have used FCE since installing the Yosemite OS, so I'm thinking perhaps that has something to do with it.
    Any ideas?

There have been recent posts appearing about your problem. I'm not sure if anyone has found a solution.
FCE was abandoned by Apple years ago, and they are currently making Operating Systems without regard to how it impacts FCE.
    countrynewsman wrote:

That is what I would try - a fresh install - but your need to use FCS remover (from the same software source as Preference Manager) to make sure you get all traces of your existing installation off the drive prior to doing the installation:
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcsremover/
If you use FCS Remover, and reinstall the other problem may be that Apple has apparently removed the Software Upgrade to FCE 4.0.3.
So unless you have a 4.0.3 install disk, or you hadn't upgraded past the version number of the install disk you do have, you legacy projects may be tagged as being created with a later version than you have and not open.
Hope it works out for you.

  • A later version of Apple Application Support is already installed on this computer.

I am trying to update / install iTunes 12.0.1.26.  Apple Application Support will not install because it says there is already a later version installed.  There is not!  I have uninstalled after initial message and tried to reinstall but I still recieve the same message.

    Good Afternoon, JohnHT2!
I think I have the fix to your issue.
I've been experiencing the same issue as you describe above. The issue occurred for me during the upgrade process from version 11.4.0.18 to version 12.0.1.26 (which is the current version downloadable from Apple).  The installation sometimes appears to be okay, but the Apple Application Support fails to update correctly.  In other instances, the iTunes installation fails completely with error 1603 (which is generic "fatal error" code).
    Symptoms:
Just some of the symptoms I've noticed in my environment.
    - In Programs & Features, there is no Apple Application Support to uninstall.
    - In Event Viewer's Application log, you may see Event ID 10005 from Source MsiInstaller, stating the dreaded error message "A later version of Apple Application Support is already installed on this computer."
    - In Event Viewer's Application log, you may see Event ID 1000 from Source Application Error, stating "Faulting application name: MsiExec.exe" along with a bunch of other error details.
    - When attempting to start iTunes, you may receive popup error "Apple Application Support was not found.  Apple Application Support is required to run iTunes.  Please uninstall iTunes, then install iTunes again".
    - Uninstalling and installing iTunes fails, including via the steps described for a "full uninstall" as described here on the Apple site (for instance: Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates)
    - Installing Apple Application Support via the extracted MSI (AppleApplicationSupport.msi) fails with the same error: "A later version of Apple Application Support is already installed on this computer."
    - Installing previous versions of Apple Application Support fails with the same error (tried versions 10.7.0.21, 11.0.0.163, 11.0.1.012, 11.0.3.42, 11.1.0.126, 11.1.3.8, 11.2.2.3, 11.3.0.54, 11.3.1.2, 11.4.0.18).  (now that I know the issue, I'm confident any previous version of the installer will fail).
    - If you run the MSI installation with verbose logging, you may see lines stating: "PROPERTY CHANGE: Adding BNEWERPRODUCTISINSTALLED property. Its value is '1'." and "PreventDowngrade. Return value 1."
There may be other indications, but these are things we ran into.  I'm trying to be detailed so that other folks who run into this issue may feel better about the below fixes being an option for them.
    Resolutions:
I've found two ways to remedy the issue in our environment.  You can either use the Microsoft FixIt utility to clean up the previous installation for us, or you can edit the registry manually to repair the installation.  We're in an office and prefer not going computer-to-computer to fix everyone's issue independently, so we had to go via the registry.  I was able to fix it via both ways, though.
Fix 1: Run the Microsoft Program Install Uninstall Troubleshooter.
For this fix you will need to be logged in as an administrator for the computer.
    Here are the steps:
Download and Run the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall FixIt: [FixIt Link]
In the troubleshooter, choose: Detect problems and apply the fixes for me (Recommended)
    Choose Installing
From the list, select Apple Application Support and click Next. (it actually does appear here!)
Select Yes, try uninstall. This step could take a while to process once it starts.
Once it confirms it is fixed, click Next.
Select "Yes, the problem has been fixed" and click Next.
    Finish/close the FixIt tool.
Now the Apple Application Support will install successfully on your next attempt.
    - If you don't have iTunes installed, you can simply run the latest downloaded installer: iTunes64Setup.exe
    - If the other iTunes components are already installed, you will need to go to Programs & Features (or Add/Remove programs) and uninstall the iTunes program, then re-install the program from the downloaded installer: iTunes64Setup.exe
    - If you have the MSI, you can simple run AppleApplicationSupport.msi and carry on happily.  Make sure it's the right version of the MSI (right-click it, select Properties, go to the Details tab and verify the Comment line says "Apple Application Support 3.1").  If you don't know what an MSI is... ignore this and use the installer.
iTunes should work perfectly normally for you now.
    Fix 2:
If you're like me and you need to repair iTunes over a larger number of computers, then Fix 1 quickly becomes too time consuming.  Thankfully, a quick registry edit will resolve the issue as well.
For more advanced users; if you're not sure what the Windows Registry is, please tread very carefully and make sure you back up the registry before you change anything!
You'll need to be an administrator on the computer to do this.
    Start Registry Editor.
In Windows 8.1, you can right-click the start menu (flag in the bottom-right corner) and choose Run.  Then type "regedit" and click OK.
In Windows 8, go to the Start menu, click the magnifying glass (or just start typing) and search for "regedit".  The first result should be "regedit.exe" - click that.
In Windows Vista, click the Start menu, then click the little arrowing pointing to the right (>) and choose Run.  Then type "regedit" and click OK.
In Windows 7 or XP, click the Start menu orb, and choose "Run...". Then type "regedit" and click OK.
Make a backup of your registry. In Registry Editor, right-click on "Computer" and choose "Export".  Save the file somewhere on your computer.  You'll probably never need it.. which are famous last words.  Better safe than sorry!
    Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\ED0FAC38B3D873C46A13B2F861CE0313\
If the key "ED0FAC38B3D873C46A13B2F861CE0313" doesn't exist, then go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products and make sure "Products" is highlighted.
Go to the Edit menu and choose "Find...".
Do a search for "Apple Application Support".
Your first result should be a ProductName value of "Apple Application Support".
Verify at the very bottom of Registry Editor that your current location is "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\[GUID], where GUID is an alphanumeric string that's 32 characters long.
    Right-click "Version" and choose "Modify".
In Value Data, type 0 (the number zero) and click OK.
    Close Registry Editor.
You should now be able to successfully install the AppleApplicationSupport.msi or re-install iTunes.  If, for whatever reason, it still detects the wrong version, go back to the Registry Editor and delete the entire key from above (so, right-click on the 'folder' named "ED0FAC38B3D873C46A13B2F861CE0313" and select "Delete").  Should never be necessary, though..
In a Windows domain there are many ways to update the registry so use whatever works best for you.  I'll be adding this as a special extra step in our SCCM deployment.
I hope this helps!  It took us a good many hours to track down what was stopping us from resolving the issue (and/or causing it to begin with).  Suffice to say we now have a whole bunch of users who are very happy to no longer get iTunes error messages when they log into their computers or attempt to start iTunes itself.
    Have a great day!

  • "Windows Setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer's hardware" error using MDT

Good day. I am using Microsoft Deployment Toolkit to deploy images to a group of ClearCube R3080D bladed PCs. Below are the server details:
VMware virtual server with Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Service Pack 1
    Microsoft Deployment Workbench Version 6.1.2373.0
    Management Console 3.0 Version 6.1(Build 7601: Service Pack 1)
    Windows Deployment Services Version 6.1.7600.16385
The image I am deploying to the blades is that of Windows 7 Enterprise x64 Service Pack 1 with Office 2010 and a few other third-party applications.
I have pushed this image to literally hundreds of blades successfully. I had a problem with one blade and found that the HDD was faulty. I RMA’d that HDD and installed the replacement. I pushed the same image to the blade and it works fine to the very end
then I receive the error ”Windows Setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer’s hardware.”
I have checked the BIOS configurations on this blade and they are identical to those of several known good blades. In fact, I swapped HDDs between a known good blade and the blade in question. The problem seemed to follow the HDD. Therefore, I assumed that
ClearCube sent a faulty HDD. I had the identical problems with a second HDD from ClearCube so I’m sure that the HDD is fine.
    I have read through http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2466753
as well as many other questions posed by other folks and I have yet to find a good solution.
Again, this image works on all other blades that are of the same model and the HDDs are also of the same model. I'm quite confused!

Having the same problem here. As a first time mac user, Apple has certainly made a bad first impression.
For me, the issue seems to occur when transferring files between computers that are connected to the same access point (when transferring files from wired computers on the network there is no issue). My vista laptop and every laptop I have tried has worked perfectly fine with this access point so I am 100% convinced it is the mac. Basically when I copy the files, after about 100mb, I am unable to access anything on the local network or internet until I restart Airport. The weird thing is that even though I am unable to access anything, the airport utility says it is connected. I might also note that the wireless signal strength is full.
If I can't get this figured out in a few days, this computer is going back to the store where it came from and I will officially label myself anti-mac. This type of issue is just unacceptable for something so main stream.

  • Windows setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer's hardware.

Just over a month ago, I purchased 6 identical Lenovo B5400 laptop computers for a small charity. Each is preconfigured with Windows 7 Professional, with a Win 7 recovery partition, and is supplied with a set of Windows 8 Pro recovery media (the charity
requires Windows 7 installed). I unpacked three laptops, configuring the first one as required by the charity, and using the second and third to experiment with the sysprep / imagex process before applying it to the configured system for migration to the other
laptops. After securing the second and third laptops by taking image backups, I applied sufficient configuration to the second to test the process, then sysprep'd it, and imagex'd it to a network drive, and to a USB stick. So far so good. After using imagex
to apply the custom .wim file to the third laptop, I found it booted up through the "updating registry settings", "starting services", and "installing devices" phases, but when it got to "applying system settings", it
displayed a messagebox titled "Install Windows", with the message "Windows Setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer's hardware".  In the last few days, I have explored all the other incidences of problems with similar
symptoms found by a google search, including those on this forum, and tried numerous experiments without getting any further (in most cases not even getting as far)". The sysprep'd image on the second laptop boots ok, going through the same phases up
to "applying system settings", then reboots normally, requests username and PC name, etc, the only defect being that it loses the Realtek display driver (which only takes 2 minutes to restore). I have tried imagex /apply to put the custom .wim file
back on the same laptop it was taken off (the second laptop), and it works exactly the same as it did for the same system immediately after sysprep'ing. The only difference between laptops 2 and 3 is a serial number (QB07523967, and QB07524012). Is there any
reason that this should not work? If it will not, I'm faced with about 100 hours to configure the 6 laptops individually to the charity's requirement.

    Hi,
This issue can be caused by hard disk settings in bios or DVD drive or bad SATA cable. Please try those steps below:
Upgrade the BIOS to the latest version; go into the BIOS and activate "Load Fail-Safe Defaults".
If you connect the SATA drives, please set the SATA controller to compatible mode in BIOS.

  • A later version of Apple Application Support is already installed on this computer - dead lock

    Hello,
trying to solve itunes problems, i tried to completely uninstall itunes, as mentioned in article
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1925?viewlocale=es_ES
(uninstall modules in order, verify uninstallation, reboot, and reinstall itunes)
However, it wasn't possible to reinstall itunes. Digging in forum i found a method to install part by part the application, by means of unraring the installer .exe file and executing modules independently.
The fist module: AppleApplicationSupport.msi won't install, because it does a check (erroneus check!!) and detects an inexistent version of Apple Application Support. It shows message: "A later version of Apple Application Support is already installed on this computer", and goes out.
After that, i can install itunes, but do not work.
I tried cleaning registry with msicuu2.exe, as mentioned somewhere to eliminate Application Support rests, but doesn't find any Application Support Installation.
    Locked. Can't use iTunes.
    Please, any help
    Thank you very much.

Not yet. I tried apple telephone support, but couldn't get a definite answer.
In my opinion a installer program should try to install in every case, overriding any version that could be degraded. It's a nonsense that a installer program goes out without installing, suposing there are no degradation issues of the installation software.
Also, i think KB article http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1923 may need a correction, as it doesn't work fine always, and the cure is worse than the disease.

  • Uninstalling itunes and then reinstalling but keeps on saying itunes is already running on my computer

Can you help i am trying to use my existing itunes thats attached to my iphone ,ipad, laptop computer 1, and now need to attache to laptop computer2 which is windows7 but computer 2 had a different itunes on it i have tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it keeps on saying after install that itunes already running on computer
2 and my music is not there, any advise would be much appreciated.?

Actually, I'd use the following user tip rather than the Apple document as a guide. (At the time I'm writing this reply, the user tip is much better organised, more accurate and way more up to date that the Apple document.)
Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates
In the normal course of events, and uninstall/reinstall doesn't affect your number of authorisations on a computer. Usually, it requires a serious hardware change (like a new hard drive or motherboard), or a BIOS update, or an upgrade to a different Windows operating system to confuse your iTunes and make it think that it is now installed on a different computer before you end up using extra authorisations for the same operating system for the same computer. (So if you ever have to do things like major hardware changes, or BIOS updates on the computer, deauthorise the PC first, and then reauthorise after the change has been carried out.)
