A technical question about time.

I find myself wondering what would be the total playing time of my iTunes library. How can I determine this? I could copy the total file into Excel then add up the time column, but as I have 12,000 tracks I doubt Excel could handle it. Is there a simple way to do this?

Select Library - Music and look at the botton center of the iTunes window.

  • Question about Time Capsule and Spotlight

I have a simple question about using Time Capsule and Spotlight. Is everything that goes on to Time Capsule indexed into Spotlight? It would appear so but when I search for something (that is still on my hard drive and also backed up to Spotlight) only the local copy appears. Would it be that it finds the closest copy and if that were not there it would point to the Time Capsule copy? Thanks in advance for clarifying this for me.

The automatic setup in the airport utility has changed something.
Is the line down to the TC from the express dotted.. in other words is wireless??
    Funny stuff happens.
Please post the screenshots of the 3 pages from the airport utility setup for both airport express and TC..
Make sure wireless is set to off in the express.
Both should be set to dhcp on the internet tab and both set to off bridge mode on the network tab.
So for example the bridge on the network tab.
The summary page can also be a help.
There is a half summary page when you click the item in the airport utility.
There is also a fully summary page, when you hold option key and double click the TC icon for example.

  • Technical question about encoding:  Experimentation may be needed, but..

I work with a team producing a weekly video for distribution to two other sites. Up until now, we have been capturing (Canon XL2 into FCP on iMac via FW), doing a few quick edits and sending to a DVD via compressor. As an aside, we also have compressor put out a smallish web-version for upload to our website.
We distribute the video DVD for use with a live audience, whose sole engagement with content from us is via video (We are a church). It's working, and has been working for about a year. Minus a few mishaps - mostly human error stuff...
I would consider recommending a move to distributing video as files instead of physical DVDs. The potential advantages I see are:
    1. We can encode at a higher quality than DVD
    2. No time spent burning the DVD
    3. No physical transport of a physical device (made of cheap plastic) - We could upload/download via Dropbox or some similar model.
    4. The technician starting up the playback wouldn't have to fight with the DVD-player going to "sleep".
My question for this forum is on the technical side of things. Can we use FCP/COmpressor to actually put out a higher quality video if it's a file to play on a Mac? If so, how? What kinds of encodes should we experiment with?
    Thanks all!

Can we use FCP/COmpressor to actually put out a higher quality video if it's a file to play on a Mac?
    yes
    If so, how?
Simply use Compressor to encode whatever comes out of FCP. There are lots of presets for h.264 based file generation from highly compressed to nearly visually lossless.
What kinds of encodes should we experiment with?
    See previous answer.
The key element is all the computers must be able to play h.264 quicktime files. Current Macs will have no issues. And, as long the PC people download and install a current version of Quicktime Player, it is a cross platform compatible format.

  • Technical question about photo files... involving Q, i think~

(Note: several questions in this post, scattered)
Does anyone know how photo files retain their information given from the camera? For example, the time and date that they were taken. Is there another way or program that allows me to view these details swiftly? Are these little pieces of information easily lost if I transfer the images from one application/program to the next??? I'm sentimental, and like being able to refer to images when I need an exact time for an event...
I love iPhoto for its organization of images and how convenient it is to glance over to the left to find the "Information" tab containing the time and date of when each photo was taken.
However, after making a back-up of my iPhoto libraries folder, I realized that there are about 5 or 6 GB of extra information created for my 4000+ images (due to thumbnails created for each image, etc) versus just having them in folders would save me 5 or 6 GB. Additionally, when I look at my images through finder, I find redundant files, like:
IMG_0001 and IMG00012 (these two images are exactly the same). Is there a way to get rid of these files safely?
Thank you all so much for all the help.

That info in stored in the photo file as EXIF data - many programs will read and display the EXIF date - Generally it travels well with the photo

The only safe way to get rid of photos in iPhoto is to delete them using iPhoto - drag them to the iphoto trash and empty the iPhoto trash

This buys you non destructive editing, the ability to revert to the original at any time and virtually unlimited organization capability with keywords, albums, smart albums, ratings etc.
with the low cost of storage I find the trade off a good one

  • Question about Time Capsule as primary router

Hi everyone. I'm ready to upgrade my backup drive to take advantage of Leopard's Time Machine. I'm trying to decide between a simple 500 GB firewire drive or spending the extra for the Time Capsule. I have and intel iMac and an older 12 inch powerbook so I understand the advantages of wirelessly backing up my info.
My question is this - in reading reviews, its suggested that I use Time Capsule as the primary router. However, I had AT&T install U-Verse cable and DSL in my house a few months back and it works flawlessly. I'm using the 2Wire AT&T Uverse modem/router as my router. Can I easily make the Time Capsule my primary router without disrupting what is currently a very good network and is it a simple adjustment? Also, if I opt to make Time Capsule part of the network and use my current AT&T router as the primary, will I notice a significant slowdown as some reviews have suggested.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    thanks
    Kory

Depends if you want the fast transfer speed of files. The wireless TC file transfer will be about 8M/sec and ethernet about 15M/sec
Firewire 400 will be about 25M/sec and so will USB2.

  • Technical questions about the BO repository

    Hi to all,
I order to understand how BO (talking about BO 3.0) act internally, I need to know the following questions:
    - What information is held in the repository database? Content or just metadata?
    - What is held in the properties blob of the bo_repos.cms_infoobjects6 table?
    - What is held in the data blob of the bo_repos.cms_relations6 table?
    - Is there any possibility to change directly the UID of an object (eg: a universe) in the database directly? This action could be helpful to work with versions..
    Is there any technical documentation?
    Many thanks,
    Bea

    Hi Bea,
I tested your case in my environment. After changing the definition of a key figure in my universe (this should be your development version), I renamed it (used the name of a universe on which I already had some reports running on) and tried to export  it in the BOBJ repository. The designer prompted me to select if I want to copy or move my universe. I choose to  create a copy of my universe and on the next step I was asked if I want to overwrite the universe with the same name (in your case this should be your production version). I confirmed overwriting the universe and started then my WebI reports (production reports) in the InfoView. Everything worked fine and the modification was visible.
Please note that if during the development phase you remove/rename/change the visibility of universe objects (classes, dimensions, key figures), which are used in your existing WebI reports, then you will indeed may have problems. Even if you delete a class or object and add later a new one with the same name, there's no garantee that a WebI report which was using this object will work.
Still if you just modify or add objects during the development or if you remove first the objects, which you want to delete, from your reports, then you should not have a problem with the approach we are discussing here.

  • Questions about Time Machine back-up

Hello. I am planning to upgrade the hard drive on my MacBook Pro (probably an SSD), and I would like to install Snow Leopard on it (My MacBook Pro is mid-2009, so it came with Snow Leopard + installation CD).
This will be my first time using Time Machine, so I have some questions.
When I use Migration Assistant to transfer my files from Time Machine backup to the new hard drive, does it also transfer things like Sarafi bookmarks, sticky notes, iTune song play counts, mouse sensitivity, finder settings, menu bar apps, etc.?
Should I deauthorize iTunes before removing the old hard drive? Furthermore, do I have to re-enter product keys on softwares? (major softwares I use are Autodesk suite, Movie Magic Screenwriter, Guitar Pro 6 and MS Office 2011).
I also have Windows Vista on Bootcamp. Can I do a backup of that partition on Time Machine?
    Thank you.

    Everything will be transferred. Intact.
When you boot the computer with the new drive and fresh OS, you have to enter information about yourself. Early in the setup process you will be asked if you want to transfer information. At this point you can select the Time Machine back up and let the Mac do the rest.
The Time Machine backup has to be connected to the Mac, of course.
(This is Setup Assitant, and is easier to use than Migration Assistant.)

  • Quick question about Time Machineive

I can't seem to find the answer to this question: can I set up Time Machine to back up an additional external drive in addition to backing up my computer? We keep our media on a separate external drive. I'm looking into buying Leopard in part because of the backup capabilities. Thank you.

You can do what you want but Time Machine will not back up FAT32 formatted drives. This is the format that nearly all external drives ship with and is the format that many people use to share files between Macs and PCs. Reformatting the drive in the Apple Extended or Apple Extended (Journaled) format will involve erasing everything on the drive so your files should first be safely copied to another hard drive and/or CD/DVD. You then should randomly test a few of the copied files to ensure that they copied successfully.
There are good directions for formatting a Time Machine drive in this article which will work just fine to reformat your media drive if you need to do that. People with PPC Macs should substitute Apple Partition Map for GUID when following the directions.

  • I have a question about time machine

I have time machine on a hard drive that is formated as a MBR with a NTFS partition and OSX journaled partition. The NTFS has some stuff that I had backed up from a windows system and the OSX of course has the time machine backup. I know that because of this setup, I can't boot from the time machine itself. The question that I have is that, if in the future I have to clean reload the system and I used the Option + R and access the Internet recovery system. I know there is an option to restore from the time machine. Question is, will doing this restore the full Mountain Lion operating system as I have it now or am I going to have to restore the original Operating system (Snow Leopard), upgrade to Mountain Lion and then use the time machine. From what I can tell from when I look at the time machine back up. It looks like all the system files are on the backup drive. I hope at some point in the near future to have a drive that I can clone the system to but I am not at that point right now.
In regards to cloning the drive. I know that Carbon clone is one software that people recommend using to clone the drive. Is there any reason Disk Utility can not clone the drive? I assume I would have to boot to the Recovery Disk utililty first and then use it to creat an image of the drive.
    Thank you
    Patrick

For TM issues, see Pondini's TM FAQs. CCC is better since you can clone the boot volume and then incrementally update the clone. DU requires a separate boot volume to replicate a source volume onto another destination volume. Also, you can only restore the entire volume, using the block-copy mode, which takes almost twice as long as doing it with CCC.

  • Some donkey questions about time machine!

Hi all, really quick question, money is not really flying around my house at the moment, but we really see the benefit of using time machine. You can get an 8gb usb stick now for under £15 and I was hoping this will do to backup files only from a home folder or two. Time machine doesn't require a minimum external HD does it?
Also can I backup my memory sticks to time machine, I can't figure this out?!?
Cheers all and sorry for asking dump *** questions

if your home directory is that small and you don't want to backup anything else, Time machine is not a great solution. in my experience it does require significant overhead so I'm not sure it will work at all. also by default TM backs up everything unless you specifically put something on the TM exclusion list. therefore you'll have to make sure you exclude absolutely everything besides your home directory. In particular you'll need to exclude a number of invisible folders at the top level of your hard drive.

  • Question About Time Remapping - Premiere Pro CC 2014

I have a question in regards the the Time Remapping feature. When I use it to gradually speed a clip up, the audio obviously doesn't change with the video. I was looking to see if there is a way to do the same change to the audio, within Pr Pro or Audition. I spent some time looking in the programs and also Googling yesterday, but didn't find much. Does anyone know a way to do this? I did try using Audacity (Sliding time Scale/Pitch Shift), but the way Audacity processes the audio is quite a bit different than Pr Pro/Au.

  • Question About Time Capsule as Media Server

    Hi,
I am debating purchasing the 1TB Time Capsule. I would put all of my media and photos on the drive and use it as a Media Server. However, I'd like to verify what this thing can and cannot do before I purchase it. If anybody can comment on if TC can accomplish these tasks, I would appreciate it.
    1) Will I be able to stream the TC content to my Apple TV?
    2) I have a Macbook that goes with me when I travel. If I got the TC, no media content would live on my Macbook, but I'd like to access the content on the TC from the road. If I have a Mobile Me account, will I be able to access the media content on the TC from my Macbook?
    3) I have a server that hosts my website, and my current router has Port Forwarding. Can you configure port forwarding with the TC?
    4) I understand you can attach a USB drive to the TC. I'd like to hang a drive off of the TC to back it up. I thought I read you can do this, but has anybody found an automated way to do this? Are there any backup programs (Deja Vu or Backup) that can use the TC as a source and a TC USB drive as a target?
I appreciate any assistance with my questions.
    Thanks
    Chicago29

I have my TC set up as a wireless media server. I have over 800 movies and a huge music library. I Stream to my computer and to my apple TV via Itunes on my imac
Pros- since I have almost all apple stuff, IMAC, Apple TV. The installation and streaming is flawless and very easy.
COns- The TC is extremely slow to write to. So getting stuff on it takes forever even if you use a LAN cable. Once it is on -no problems.
Since the TC is so slow itunes will sometimes show things as not being there when it does a quick scan or not playable. This is remedied by just restarting itunes once the TC harddrive is up to speed.
Price- You can get a wireless router and a 1TB external for $150 and have a faster machine that does the same thing without all the speed problems.
I was a little MAC crazy when the TC came out and bought it before the reviews were out. IN hindsight I would have just bought a wireless router and an external and saved myself the money. But I have it and it works. Kindof like a mule.

  • Question about Time Capsule

    Hello.
I would like to buy a Time capsule 2 T but I have 2 questions.
    - Could I do backup with Time machine from 2 diferente computers (Mac Mini and Mac Book Pro) over 1 time capsule?
    - Could I share some data from the hard disk of time capsule to internet (by ftp or something like that)?
    Thanks in advance.

    - Could I share some data from the hard disk of time capsule to internet (by ftp or something like that)?
    Thanks in advance.
Not smarter but have studied and done it.
There is no way to use ftp as there is no ftp server or client in the TC.. in fact there is nought but AFP offered to internet. SMB is offered locally as well.. in other words you have Apple files and Windows files.. and that my friend as they say is that. You cannot access SMB over the internet without using vpn which I can explain if you want.
To access AFP over internet you need a Mac.. there is no windows client.
You need the TC to get public IP on the wan side.. in which case you just tick a box for internet access. And put a password on the disk access.
Or if the TC is behind another router, the TC must be bridged and you will need to port forward TCP port 548 to the IP address of the TC.
So yes, possible, not necessarily easy nor highly secure. AFP would be subject to man in the middle type attack. although it is not likely. Judge how secure your info should be.
VPN is the really only right way to do this with reasonable security.
You also then need to mix data and backups on the TC and this has issues.
    http://pondini.org/TM/TCQ3.html
The TC is not a NAS.. it is a back up device designed for TM and in particular for wireless connection by laptops to ensure they get backed-up.
There is no inbuilt method of backup of data actually stored on a TC.
You might find there are better NAS devices available that offer external access by secure FTP or HTTPS etc.. that can also do TM backups.. eg Netgear, Synology or QNAP are the main ones.

  • Naive Question about Time Machine

    Hi!
I've just received my MBP and it's absolutely great!
I'm planning to buy an external HD to make backups with time machine.
My question is: will the HD be dedicated only to Time Machine or I can use it also as a normal external HD and put on it data other than my backups?
    Thanks and best regards!

    Hi muju79;
I would suggest that you partition the drive into at least two partitions. Give one to TM and you can use the others for your own use. TM wants to use up the whole disk or partition to which it is assigned. If you are adding your own files to the same disk or partition you can upset TM.
