A thought about noise?

I'm not sure if anyone may have posted this BUT... I think the change in design (i.e. the back cover) may have a great impact on the acoustics of the noise that we all know and hate. The straight back cover on the Rev A's and B's create a flat barrier that any noise, fan, HD, etc. would slam into and cause a louder sound than an contoured back where the sound would in essence rolls back and forth against. I have some extensive training in speaker design and acoustics and I would suspect that the new sleek back is more than just style... thoughts? Counterpoints? Shoot...

Anybody seen the little grid in the back cover? A better cooling system?
P.S.I'm waiting my iMac to be replaced (confirmed 7 days ago): will they send me the new one? Hoping

Launch the Terminal app in /Utilities/, run these two commands (copy & paste each one separately and hit the return key):
    sudo chflags 0 /volumes/*
    sudo chmod a+rx /volumes/*
at the Password: prompt, type in your admin password, carefully since nothing displays on the screen, and hit the return key. These should unlock your drives. You might have to restart.

    Try the following:
In Finder, select the problematic volume and then press command-I.
Expand the Sharing & permissions section if it's collapsed.
If the section is locked, then unlock it by pressing the padlock button and then authenticating as directed.
Tick/check Ignore ownership on this volume.

if the batteries exploded inside my wireless mouse, do i need to buy a new mouse? any thoughts about saving my mouse? thank you! nancy

The chemicals or materials from inside the batteries can cause circuit
damage in the mouse, the mouse may need to be replaced. You may
have to check with the battery manufacturers customer relations to see
if they offer guarantees covering products damaged those batteries...
And those chemicals may remain as a health concern since the mouse
cannot be subjected to washing, since there are electrical parts inside.
How old is the mouse, and how old are the batteries?
Some products have a limited warranty or guaranty.
In some locations, that may be longer than in others.
Were the batteries rechargeable or disposable?
I'd consult an Apple Store and genius bar about the mouse and issues
or concerns about the cause (or blame?) of the leaking batteries, or
which way to go in that matter. I cannot suggest what else to do; we're
not Apple representatives, but in a retail Apple Store they have options.

  • Just fancy asking some questions which i have never really thought about

I just fancied asking some basic questions which i have never really thought about, but suppose i should know.
    The first one is:
A java program is executed through the main method
public static void main(String[] args)So this method is passed a String array but i never pass the array to it, so who does?
And secondly, you can have variables of type int and variables of type Integer. What is the difference?
    thanks

I'll take a stab with some overly-simplistic answers. Corrections most welcome.
A java program is executed through the main method
public static void main(String[] args)So this method is passed a String array but i never pass the array to it, so who does? The OS passes the parameters to the JVM and the JVM calls the main method with the parameters from the OS.
And secondly, you can have variables of type int and variables of type Integer. What is the difference?Integer is a wrapper class for the primitive int type. It allows you to use int-type concepts in places where an Object is required. But don't over-use these as there is a memory and performance overhead that must be taken into consideration.

  • Mini i7 2012 - question about noise

Hi, just bought a refurb 2012 i7 quad 2.3/1TB Mini from Apple Store.  I have a recording studio and want
a machine that'll be quiet as possible when recording with a mike in near proximity to the Mini.
About the HD --   Some suggest i will have lower noise with a SSD HD vs spinning conventional Drive -
less potential to invoke fan noise primarily.  I decided to buy this stock and test that theory first.
1TB is vastly more capacity than i need for my daily needs/workflow  -  i'm running an audio workstation/editor,
recording mostly mono audio voiceover tracks with a lot of editing - usually with browser and email client open simultaneously.
I got this with stock 4gb Ram and figure on maxing Ram to 16gb.  Beyond that the question is the HD -- whether i should
change out the stock HD for an SSD.. and the issue of both noise - and processor demand relative to the type of HD installed.
    Thanks for any thoughts,
    Mike

Before upgrading to the SSD, try the RAM upgrade if the cost isn't too great... in that with more RAM installed, the hard disk drive would not require as many read-writes as virtual memory while handling larger files or complex processor activity where swap files or temp files have to go into VM at slower disk drive speeds than the bus speeds on the logicboard. And the unit may be a bit cooler with less fan noise, until it heats up.
The capacity of the 1TB HDD is tempting and a value for the money in several ways; so long as you acquire more than one method of extensive backup of your work. And also consider a clone of the OS on an external drive device enclosure that supports booting your Mac, as a real backup outside of TimeMachine methods.
A value in upgrading from the larger HDD to a solid state drive, and retaining the relatively new HDD with a partition for a complete clone of your Mac's system, could be good if managed carefully.
There is a limit in length if cables are utilized to access an external hard drive or other components at distance from the main computer unit, so if you had to boot and run from an external drive that has a self-powered enclosure and a clone (or main system) you'd want to carefully not marginalize by overextending this limit. Maybe have an SSD inside the Mini and a capable enclosure with the large drive outside.
Should you check into the cable limits to be sure the microphone and other components can be at reasonably good distance to minimize sound interference with your recording, and if needs be, consider inquiry into the basics of constructing a sound minimizing box that has ventilation & access door to handle the Mini as needed. Just so long as nothing near the computer can retain heat, conducts cooling air flow, it can be done. So long as the materials do not block wireless BT keyboard & mouse. Or run USB cable within limits.
    {A thought in the above, concerning use of heat conductive electronic modules that are in use in portable refrigeration, as adapted to cool a vented enclosure for a computer (without liquid, etc) to make a cool box?}
The SSD is a good idea, and some replacement upgrade brands are maybe a notch above the rest. I'd seen where OWC has some quality builds but I have never bought anything from them. There is even a retro-fit SSD for older PPC Mac desktop and portables to get more umph out of an iBook for example. Maybe.
Best of luck in your studio work.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • A thought about HD sizes and minimum needed disk space

This has just occurred to me and I am looking for more accurate numbers to help advise posters here, more accurately, when the situation occurs.
In this day and age of Macs with 500 Gigabyte and 1-4 Terrabyte drives, do we still need to tell people that have filled up their Macs' HDs that they need to leave 15-20 % of the total drive size free for OS X to still work properly.
Because this, actually, equates to a mimimum of 100 Gigabytes to, at least, 200 Gigabytes or more, for larger drives, of drive space that needs to be cleared of data! Just to have enough drive space for OS X?
Does anyone else thinks that this is a ridiculous amount that OS X, by itself, actually needs to run smoothly?
Does anyone here have a better estimation of just how many GBs OS X uses on an average basis?
I would rather have a more realistic size to have remaining on a hard drive than to keep using the percentage rule.
I know the percentage rule was used in the day when we had smaller capacity drives, so it would still apply in those situations.
But I do not think it no longer applies when drive capacities are so much larger today and getting larger.
Any thoughts and more realistic numbers welcome.
I am going to post this also, in the Mac Pro section.

Yes, going by percentage is just plain silly. Here is  the most intelligent comment on the subject I've seen (from Anonymous at XYMer's.) Btw, he wasn't recommending keeping a minimum of 75GB free. The 75GB figure was in response to someone who asked if that was adequate. 75GB was what happened to be free and it would appear it was far in excess of what was really needed.
Here's a link to the full discussion
    http://x704.net/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=6004
These suggestions, so far as I can tell, have neither theoretical nor empirical basis. They're sort of like the advice that you need to always drink at least 12 glasses of water per day: someone said it once, and since then it has taken on a life of its own.
You really probably should keep some drive space free. If you have 75 GB free, you're fine. The amount that you might want to keep free could perhaps best be described as, "enough to hold everything without any fear of unexpectedly filling up." For comfort I'd set aside about 6 GB for virtual memory, but that number will vary vastly depending on how you use your computer. On top of that I'd keep several GB to leave room for the system to move files around, and maybe another half dozen GBs just in case I need to store something large or something unexpected. So I'd be shopping for a new hard drive or cleaning up big files well before space went below 16 GB. In reality, I wouldn't wait nearly that long, because I could extrapolate based on usage that I'd be getting uncomfortably full well in advance of it actually getting that full.
On the other hand, I have one machine that never really gets files added to it, that I keep with only a couple GB free because it causes no problems based on the way I use it and there would be no benefit in increasing the available space.
To be clear, nothing bad suddenly happens when you cut below some magic number. Rather, depending on how you use your computer, you may experience minor to noticeable performance degradation as free space approaches zero. The dynamic pager, for example, likes to create virtual memory files that dynamically double in size each time one is created, up to a maximum of 1 GB. If there's not room to create the file it wants, your computer could slow down or seize up. Likewise, if you're running very near the drive capacity, bulk writes could slow down because there may not be large contiguous sections of disk available. But you'll generally need to be really close to the edge to notice.
Back in ye olden days of teeny tiny drives, any particular file would take a greater percentage of available space, so it was on average more important to keep a larger percentage of the drive free. But to reiterate, how much space you have free doesn't really matter as long as there's enough of it that there's no danger of it suddenly filling up.

  • A thought about Apple...

    Ok so here it is;
i LOVE my macs & think apple are great...but, what's going on?!?! as mac users we're suppose to be limited in our technical/software problems but since 10.4.9 it doesnt seem the case. im running 10.4.9 on my imac & everything has slowed down since the update from 10.4.8. I understand that no technoligical device is free from potential problems but is would seem as the popularity of the mac has increased so has the problems. are we to face viruses & spyware soon?
i bought a macbook the other day & in the 45mins or so i was in the store 2 imacs were sold; a 17" & a 20". i asked one of the sales staff how mac sales were & he said they were selling25-30 mac per week which is pretty good for this store!
is the increasing demand meaning a fall in the 'quality'?
for the record i will never use another computer appart from a mac but i am feeling that maybe the demand maybe out stripping the support?....
no specific question here, just a thought...

I've been an exclusive Mac user since 1986. We have an all-mac household with two laptops and an imac. I help run an apple-driven research lab. I've been "approving" of the Mac for more than 20 years, with my ow dollars and my institution's dollars.
One of the main reasons to go with apple has always been ease of use and reliability--as in the "i'm a Mac" ads Apple runs. The message is "buy a mac, and avoid the headaches." Apple notifies you via system update of a new release, and encourages you to download and install it via system update. I've done it dozens of times without incident.
In this case, they released an update which has caused crucial aspects of the Macs funtionality--crucial for my job--to stop working, for me and apparently many other people. Now, what else should I use a support forum for, but to ask about the problem and try to find a solution? Should I post saying instead "I just want users to know that there is something wrong with me or my computer, because the new system update, which must be perfect because it came from apple,is not running perfectly
OF COURSE it's possible that the probe lies with third party vendors--although in my case, the vendor is blaming apple, ad as far as I can tell they are right to. My audio nterface orked fne before the ugrade--if Apple is gng to release a udate tat canges something this dramatically, it should notify the vedors, no?
But in the end it doesn't matter--Apple sells customers on a seamless, painless experience, on ease of use. When it doesn't deliver, no one should be surprised by irritated posts.

  • More questions and thoughts about Anti-Flicker

I am working on a video that consists entirely of digital photos provided by my client (all jpgs - not my decision).  Many of them flicker terribly in the final video.  I did a search for "anti-flicker" on this forum and read a number of threads about it.  There is one thing I am experiencing that I do not believe was covered in any of those threads.
First of all, selecting "flicker removal" in a clip's field options is useless.  I don't know why this should be so, since this worked very well in Premiere 6.5 (my previous version).
However, adjusting the anti-flicker filter in the motion settings works great when one renders a preview.  But this seems to have no effect on the final video output, and strangely, all the anti-flicker settings reset to zero if I exit the program.  This seems like a bug to me.  Does anyone else experience this?
Here is my work around.  If I also make an adjustment to the scale of the clip, then Premiere will remember the anti-flicker filter setting, and the final video output is flicker free.  If my photo is already sized for the screen, I'll set a scale setting of 99%.  If the photo is large, I will either resize it in Photoshop, or uncheck "scale to frame size" and resize it with the scale adjustment.

    Thanks for your reply
The forum is called "support" so i thought there should be some admins and technicians of nokia itself on the forum...
I send my request direct to nokia, although i am sure that there will be no change of thinking in future. A mobile, especially a music mobile, should be able to do that. That way it works now it will never challenge a iphone or ipod, i think.

  • First FC site created and Thoughts about FC

Just completed my first site created using PScs4 and FC beta 2.
    bigimpressionsmobile.com
Program does just what I want. No Coding!!! Took about 15 hours to create the site. Would have taking me a week to do it in flash. I know a little action script but do not wish to learn it in-depth. I am a designer.
Please note: Background image may not match the background in flash. No wmode transparency support .
    The Bad first.
Hate that there is not a timeline scrubber!!!!! Current preview system between states slows down my productivity. Would like to see live feedback in the final.
Timeline panel is very confusing when you have a lot of animation. I am guessing this is do to this being beta. I hope the timeline will work like the layers panel. I would like to restructure the order.
Deleting does not delete. I get why it just hides it, but I would still like a short cut option to do a complete delete in the final.
No indesign support!  Please create Indesign Catalyst.
When converting to buttons name changes. I am guessing this is a beta issue. Better be.
That's really it b/c I know this is just a beta so I will not go crazy about my other issues!  Like no support for video alpha channels and cue points.
    The Good
    No Coding!!!
Takes me half the time to create an interactive site using this program! No Coding! No headaches.
    Easy to use. Air deployment
This program is a sure winner if the final has video alpha channels, cue point support, better timeline and animation functionality similar to flash, and wmode transparency support, third party plugin compatibility with slideshow plug-ins like slideshowpro.
    Final thoughts
After creating my first fc site. I see myself only using this program for interactive headers, microsites with no more than 20 states, slideshow navigation, interactive web banners, custom preloader creation, Quick and simple online presentations a la powerpoint and keynote style.
Would use it heavily for video interactivity if you guys put in video alpha channels, cue points support, and custom skinning functionality(same method as the scrollbar and sliders)! I do a lot of green screen shoots.
State(Page) transitions(slide, page flip, dissolve, swf alpha transitions, etc.) as an option. Then being able to manually animate in the content would be a nice addition.
If there were any kind of coding I would like to see, the coding method used to create menus in Encore from  Photoshop. I can handle that! I woulds speed up productivity. Maybe put that in CS5!!!
    Thanks Adobe.

    Thanks for the feedback!
When I imported video with an alpha channel I got a black background. Is the preview going to be black in playback? I did not export the file to test though. I will try it again and see if it works. How should I set my alpha channel when I export from AE or PSCS4?
The timeline panel is not that confusing. I think the main issue with the current version is that I cannot reorder them and when I add a new effect most of the time the effect goes to the bottom, but sometimes they pop up at the top or middle.
If the object order in the timeline matches the layer order, that would be a big improvement. I still would like to have a preview scrubber in the timeline. It will speed up my productivity.
Will there be another beta before the final release? Is it still  scheduled for Q1(before end of march?)
New Issue (probably just beta issues)
"edit original" is causing a lot of headaches!
I have created the bigimpressionsmobile.com all in PSCS4.  When I choose "edit original" It only gives me an edit in Illustrator option. Not sure why, but it is causing major problems when I try to update a graphic.
Everytime I update a graphic I loose all the effects and the name changes. That slows down productivity BIG TIME!
Other things I would like to see...
    1. Would like to have edit original functionality for AE.
    2. A skew and reflect shape button.
    3. A simple built in form script.
    4. I know cue point support and action script is the best way to interact with video, but I would like to be able to trigger a state or nested state when I reach a certain point of the video. This maybe a little complicated and I guess I can create some type of workaround.
This is my vision. I want to be able to have an actor appear on screen and say "Welcome to my site. Blah Blah Blah....Please choose from one of these options listed below." When the actor says, "listed below," I want to be able to go to the next state with the animation happening while the actor is still in the background moving or walking away.
This could work if I can add 1 video to 2 states and have it stop at a particular time then start in the next state at a particular time. I know this could be done with just 2 different videos but I would have to export "TWO DIFFERENT VIDEOS."
A good example of a solution is incorporate the "trim video" option found inside Keynote.
Another option is doing something similar to Powerpoint's, on the mac, "Play across slides" for video option. I can delay the transition to anytime to go to the next slide while the video still plays. This functionality would be a GREAT solution if cue points are not an option!

Oh my Gawd, you will LOVE the Intel iMac but go for the 20" and get the additional 256 video ram. Well worth it and you get an amazing display/picture.

Noise? There is no noise. None. Nada. Zilch and I run my iMac 24/7. It is just on all the time, downloading files or making movies. This is my first iMac and I am so happy to have it. A most excellent machine!

You'll have to opt for Photoshop CS for OSX and again, there is no fan noise. The 20" Intel iMac is very quiet. Promise.
