A Tiger Software Update Question from the iBook Forum

I just finished reading this question,
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12901184#12901184
in the iBook G4 forum and am very curious myself if this could be a problem with the update. If someone knows why this is happening, would you please help the poor guy with two dead iBooks?
Thanks,
Randy

I'm sorry, I didn't mean that the other member's question was solved, only my part in it. That must have been confusing. I should go back to mark it unsolved.
I subscribe to the iBook G4 forum and when this question came up, I looked through other forums to try to find an answer for him/her. The Tiger forum seemed like the logical place to post the question. It looks like the right person came to the rescue! Thanks. Discussions members have helped me out by networking like this, so it's great to be able to return the many favors.

  • Download Software Updates Wizard from the Internet - does it use BITS to do this?

I have a Primary Site Server at my Datacenter and I setup a temporary DP on a test Win 7 system. I initially was having timeout issues trying to deploy software updates to a group of test systems for my pilot deployment to this remote location from the DP
located at the Datacenter. So I decided to setup a temporary DP on a Win 7 system to see if this will help resolve the timeout issues.
My question is, when I download patches to the package located on the remote Win 7 DP does it use BITS to do this?
Exactly what is the process that occurs when this happens, or will the PatchDownloader.log file give the info I need? I have looked in the PatchDownloader.log file and nothing has appeared yet.
    Thanks

So it sounds like I do in fact need to create a separate package just for that remote Win 7 DP then.
What I am trying to get at is this:
I have a very slow WAN link from the Datacenter to a remote site that I am running my second pilot deployment on (Pilot 2)
I have an existing package that I have been using for the last 4 months or so that I have been using for my first pilot deployment (Pilot 1)
I tried to deploy the software updates initially for Pilot 2 to my remote test systems, but they were timing out due to the constricted WAN bandwidth and the fact BITS traffic is being regulated with a packet shaper appliance device
Because of the timeout issues I was seeing in the WUAHandler.log and WindowsUpdate.log, I decided to first setup a simple Win 7 DP to see if this could resolve the timeout issues
I knew that the software updates that I wanted to deploy already existed in my "2014_Monthly_Patches-Datacenter" package, but I did not want to run the Distribute Content Wizard to deploy this entire package to my remote Win 7 DP across my very
slow WAN link and saturate the wire
So I re-downloaded the software updates again, but this time instead of having them download to the Package Source on my Primary Standalone Site server located in my Datacenter, I downloaded them to a new Package Source on the remote Win 7 DP instead and
I put them in a completely separate package named "2014_Monthly_Patches-RemoteSiteA"
What I want to know is if the steps I performed above necessary and accurate, because I do have such a slow WAN connection between the Datacenter and the remote site, or is there another way of doing this without creating the separate Package Source and
separate package on the remote DP?

I have updated from Snow Leopard to Lion with Safari Version 5.0.5. Now I can not update to Safari 5.1. There is no update in the Software Updater, and on the apple-download page, I only found a Safari 5.1 for Snow Leopard. When executing it, there is an error message, that it is for 10.6 only.
It seems that I should have first updated Safari, and then only to Lion, which I didn't. Any idea how I can fix this now without having to rollback to Snow Leopard, update Safari and then go back to Lion?

Try this Safari5.1 from the installer package

The download worked better with Firefox not sure why. At the bottom of the page after the captcha>> slow down load is the Free link,  it took about 4 minutes to download on my test.

what is the mac os x software update path from v10.5.8 to get current?

Upgrading to Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
             7. Xserve (Early 2009)
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
Am I eligible for the free upgrade?
See Apple - Free OS X Mountain Lion upgrade Program.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.

  • HT4059 Hi, I'm trying to purchase a book from the iBooks store but when I open the app and go to open store it does not go to the library

I'm not able to open the iBooks library

    Hello there, Summerrys.
The following Knowledge Base article reviews how to access the store from iBooks:
iBooks: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about iBooks and the iBooks Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4059
How do I access the iBooks Store?
An Internet connection is required. On iOS devices, iBooks includes the iBooks Store. Tap the iBooks icon and your bookshelf appears. In the upper corner, tap the Store button and the bookshelf flips around to reveal the iBooks Store. From the iBooks Store, you can browse books by title, author, or genre. You can also view featured books as well as books available on the New York Times bestseller lists (United States only). Tap on a book to see more details and download a free sample. When you buy a book, it will automatically appear on your iBooks bookshelf.
If you are using the iOS 7 app, you may want to try some of the recommended steps in the following Knowledge Base article for troubleshooting the application:
    iOS: Understanding multitasking
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4211
If an app doesn't respond to your input, or doesn't perform as expected, do the following, testing after each step:
    Check for app updates.
    Force the app to close.
    Restart your device.
    Update your iOS device.

That is true - I apologize for not being specific - what I was mainly referring to is iLife applications. I have a notice on the App Store that says 3 apps need updates, I look at the apps and they are huge so since my connection is so slow I use my work connection and d'load the files from support to my Windows machine and carry them home, once d'loaded my MacAir states it cannot install, the update must come from the App Store.
I do the same thing for large Leopard and Lion files and I can install them without error, it is just the App Store files that the system stops.

    aspaceman,
Perhaps I owe you an apology.   Having re-read that downloading from HP was unsuccessful I feel uncomfortable.  Can I suggest you update your 10.6 system (as noted in your profile) to 10.6.8 (if it is not already there) by using the
Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 combo update plus any software updates that then apply.

Did you use the Migration Assistant to help set up the new iMac using some of the files in the older PC? Some likely won't mean much, unless you have applications that can use or convert them. There's also a way to use the software Time Machine to import data files from an external or another computer, so you may have used that, too.
Hopefully someone with experience in a similar issue will reply...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Software Update Questions

    Hi everybody,
I'm still relatively green in the computer world, so, I'm sure these questions are way to "rookie" for you. Nevertheless; here they are.
    Software Update Questions:
    1. What is J2SE 5.0 Release 4, version 4.0 (39.3 MB) and, is it necessary to install?
    2. What is X11 Update 2006, version 1.1.2 (51.0 MB) and, is it necessary to install?
In case you need to know, I have Mac OS X (10.4.8) with a Verizon FIOS connection.
    Thanks,
    Wayhun
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

J2SE 5.0 is the latest version of Java. Mac OS X originally ships with Java 1.4 and this gives you the opportunity to upgrade to the latest version.
It's an optional upgrade since there are many changes between Java 1.4 and java 5, so some people might prefer to hold off until they've verified their Java apps work with the new version. For most people, though, it isn't an issue.
X11 (also known as XWindows) is a standard GUI interface for Unix systems. If you're using X11 you'd probably alredy know about it and therefore wouldn't be asking this question. It's not going to cause any problems if you update it, but it won't offer any advantage unless you're running X11-based applications.

  • When does Software Update download in the background?

I work at a school with about 150 Macs. About 50 of them are new imacs with Leopard installed. The default setting is to have software updates download in the background. We have turned that off as 50 machines downloading a 100 meg file at the same time could cause some traffic jams, correct? We download the updates once and install using ARD. My question is, if we forget to turn one off, when does it download? As soon as it is connected to the internet? We have our computers turning on in the morning at 8 and shutting of at 6 pm. When would the software update automatically download in the background? Thanks in advance.

I have always noticed that when I boot my machine, software update checks and if anything is available it will download. I have it set to check daily, and I shut my machine down nightly.
Also it tells you the last time it checked in the preferences.
    Software Update > Preferences
That should tell you your answer for sure.

That is the link for the same topic. The fix for this issue is to perform a system factory restore in "settings"...scroll down until you see restore & choose factory system restore...The Apple TV will restore itself with all icons in the menu & will be running the latest software 5.1.
I did this yesterday & it worked perfectly.
I think the issue is happening from apple TV's which have received older updates that are not compatible with the latest update or it is just a glitch that happens...

  • Re-install Tiger, Software Update, now Airport doesn't work

So, I just replaced the hard drive on my Dual USB iBook G3. I completed the installation, and everything was working great. Airport was showing my home network (unsecured, iknow) and I was able to connect to Software Update via the Airport.
First major download was the 10.4.8 combined update for PPC - after downloading it and restarting I lost Airport connectivity. Can't find my newtork, can't manually input IP address, etc.
Next, plugged into Ethernet and downloaded Airport (4.2 ?) and still nothing.
What's the deal? Airport was working before the updates, and now nothing. Other laptops at home are working wirelessly just fine, so it's not my ISP, connection, or router.
    Help!

Hi sockdaddy, welcome to Apple Discussions!
Click here to be taken to the Airport Troubleshooting kBase document.
It could be that you need a firmware update following the 10.4.8 update. Follow the steps in the above link, and post back with your results.
Another thing to try is the Mac OS Software update. Click on the Apple logo at the top left of screen while connected to the 'net, choose 'Software Update' and let the computer do the rest.
If all else fails, remove and re-seat the Airport card by following these instructions.
Let us know how you go.
