A tip on setting brightness

I was going to complain about F1 and F2 on my external keyboards not working on my two MB Pros but ended up finding the solution I might just as well share:
If you use an external screen as the main screen (move the menu bar to the external), F1 and F2 on the external keyboard will no longer set the brightness of the MB screen. Just the keys on the MB:s own keyboard will do that.
If you keep the menu bars on the MB screen, the function keys on both keyboards will work.

G'Day Carlo...
Just thought I'd draw your attention to a post in the Adobe Photoshop forum where a regular user has made a discovery about a little problem with how Pixentral creates its thumbnails. Apparently, super-wide panoramas don't scale down properly when the thumbnail is created. The user has found a way address the problem.
http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b7d30c
Perhaps you might like to pop into the thread and offer a little commentary? We use the Pixentral service quite a bit on the Adobe forums, and it'd be nice to see your reply there.
Also, I've noticed that the thumbnails generated by very small images also sometimes create excessively large thumbnails, but I haven't seen it often enough to figure out a pattern of behavior.
Your thoughts would be most appreciated.
Best regards,
Phos....

Hi [Phos....],
Thanks for the note... Thanks for pointing out the issue; I wasn't aware of the problem. I've been extremely busy with my job and haven't had a whole lot of time to dedicate to Pixentral. But I will try to take a look at the code tonight to resolve the problem.
Hope all is well!
Best,
Carlo

  • Sony VAIO VGN-FW11E - can't set brightness

    Hello everyone!
I have really annoying problem with my laptop - setting brightness just don't work. I have tested many others distributions and this work only under Ubuntu 9.10 beta. I think that is connected with this. How can I use this patch  in arch?
    Laptop: Sony VAIO VGN-FW11E
    Graphic card: ATI Radeon HD3470
I'm sorry for my english but people in polish forum just can't help me ;p

@B I'm not able to make so specific changes like you said. I can build something from AUR, sometimes also make some changes to PKBUILD's but doing something with dsdt is to hard for me.
    @litemotiv
Do you think I shoud compile new kernel with new sony-laptop module inside?
hmm, i'm not certain that will fix it for you..
do you already have a fixed dsdt for your laptop? if you do, the best way is to compile a kernel with these lines added to the kernel config file:
    CONFIG_STANDALONE=n
    CONFIG_ACPI_CUSTOM_DSDT=y
    CONFIG_ACPI_CUSTOM_DSDT_FILE="DSDT.hex"
that will definitely fix the brightness issue. the sony-laptop module is built by default, so you don't have to compile that specifically (the module is needed to get the function-keys on your keyboard working, it shouldn't have any influence on the brightness itself).
if you don't have a custom dsdt yet, you need to make one following the instructions on the vaiobuntu blog. it's a bit daunting at first, but i assure you that it's doable.

Can you share your kernel version and graphics controller information, please? I had a similar issue with my graphics controller after upgrading to the 3.x kernel in core.

  • How to set brightness and contrast of video please

Hi, how can I set brightness and contrast of video in OSMF please?
I tried add filters to MediaContainer and VideoSurface of VideoElement, but doesn't work.

I think I find the reason, OSMF uses StageVideo other than Video when StageVideo is available. StageVideo doesn't support filters or mask.
So the answer would be no way unless I switch back to Video.

  • Any tips on setting up and using akai mpk mini in logic 9?

any tips on setting up and using akai mpk mini in logic 9?
    Im stuck!!

To really find out in what frequency range the harshness you're describing lives you should enhance it first making it even more harsh and then reduce it with steep EQ bands. Just dialing in some EQ at 3 k because "they say" that's where the harshness lives will not yield satisfying results. I also found that using dynamic EQs which only react above/below a certain level work wonders sometimes compared to static EQs. The harshness might only occur on loud parts but not on soft parts so why dial out the entire frequency range for good making everything sound dead. Sonalksis has some great dynamic tools for this and I use those in almost every project.

  • GDM sets brightness to 0

When starting GDM, my screen fades to black. I have auto-login enabled, so I can just hit the brightness key on my laptop and bring the brightness back up. If I disable auto-login, I'm not able to see the screen, but I also can't use the brightness keys.
Any idea how to fix this? How does GDM determine initial screen brightness?

I have got similar problem, so I will not start a new topic .
When I start notebook, my brightness is set to maximum. When I logout, birghtness set to maximum too. So basically everytime when I get in to the login screen (GDM) brightness is set to maximum.
Any idea how to overwrite this behaviour?
    Thanks

  • Setting brightness level up (automatically) at GDM (or other DM) level

I would like to set up (maybe write a script?) that will set my monitor's brightness to 100% immediately after GDM (my display manager) will start...
I know there are ways to automatically set up full brightness in GNOME itself, but these are usually taking effect AFTER you log in and so they are not affecting GDM - I would like to set it up for GDM so, BEFORE I log in, but WHEN I AM AT THE LOGIN SCREEN...
Is it possible to do that? (I assume it is:-)
What would be the ideal (read simplest) method of doing so?
Thank you for any suggestions and ideas, that you may have,
    Matej,
P.S. If you know about any other DM's that can do that, please let me know as well...

    Here are instructions https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GNOME#Login_screen
Once in dconf-editor go to /org/gnome/settings-daemon/plugins/power and set your options.

So do I, I have the same laptop and saw the same issue. It is a bug on the kernel. The problem will be fixed in kernel 2.6.31, it is caused by this bug:
    http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13121
If you can rebuild a kernel with the patch http://bugzilla.kernel.org/attachment.cgi?id=22001 , it should fix the problem (it did for me), or - for the time being - stay with 2.6.29 until 2.6.31 comes out.

  • Script to set brightness depending on battery

    Hello guys,
I'd like to set the brightness on my machine depending on the usage of battery.
If the battery is available it should be set to 100%, if not then to the minimum to save battery life.
I thought about something like that but as I currently have no battery available I can't test it.
    In /etc/rc.local
    if acpi -a | grep off-line 2> /dev/null; then
    xbacklight -set 0
    else
    xbacklight -set 100
    fi
    What do you think?

I know laptop-mode can do this but as I simply want just this feature it's too bloated for my usage.

  • Setting Brightness/Contrast in iTunes

I have searched high and low and can not find the information on google or here on the forums. Is there a way to adjust the video settings in iTunes? All the m4v movies I play in iTunes are to bright, blacks are very grey. When I play them in Windows Media Player they are perfect, blacks are black. I know I can adjust my video settings using my graphics card drivers, specifically nvidia, but as it sits I have it set to allow the individual programs to do the video adjusting. If I do change my settings system wide in the nvidia control panel it then makes other videos to dark. Maybe I'm crazy but I'm will be shocked if there is no way to adjust video settings in iTunes considering it is a used for renting and purchasing movies.

So my question is - what did I miss setting up in iTunes that I now need to do? A silly thing to do I know appreciate any advice.
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
For iTunes preferences, start iTunes, go to the iTunes Menu in your menu bar and select "preferences"; or a faster way, command key + , (true for most applications).
Once in the preference menu you can customize the various settings for iTunes if the default settings are lacking. Some of the more important preferences are found in the Advance panel for burning, importing and general.
    Good Luck with your Mac.
BTW, there are excellent books for Mac computing and Tiger. One of my favorites is David Pogues "Tiger - the unwritten manual". Also, would be beneficial to understand the various maintenance requirements of the Mac. Dr. Smoke, a member of the forums, has an excellent primer here.

    That is poor type layout.
European languages read left to right, a ragged left edge is the worst possible layout for listed data.
The only circumstance you should use the left/right alignment is in header/footers for running heads and page numbers wheer they are widely separated and therefore easy to scan as individual short snipetts of text.

  • Tips For Setting Up a Mac For a Senior Citizen?

I have given my 84 year old Mom my old iBook to use & I was just curious if anyone had any tips for making things easier for her. I enlarged the size of the cursor & made the text somewhat larger. She's basically just using it for Mail, but I would LOVE to get her internet savvy as well. I also just ordered some over-size stickers for the keyboard which should help. Anything else that anyone can think of...? She only visits once a year & I need to cram as much knowledge into her as I can in a week.

You're on the ball and doing just fine for her. Keep the dock relatively large and get rid of some of the apps there that might confuse her. Launch Safari and make sure the text in the web pages are large enough. What type of internet connection does she have? If it's broadband and not dial up she can keep the iBook running 24/7. She doesn't have to quit mail so she'll get your email all the time. And, maybe keep her away from eBay.

  • Errors Batch Captures!! Tips for setting up Batch list corre

I have set up a Batch List, and I keep getting an error after I have imported the Batch capture list, when I go to Batch Capture I keep getting an error about Timecode? I am also wondering when doing a Batch List is ok to begin with 00:00:00:00 timcode as a media begin? As batch capture truly saves a lot time, I sincerely appreciate your time in courtesy in replying to my post.
    Sebastian

I avoid this problem by shooting the first 30 seconds of each tape to throw away. That way, my starting code for any new tape is always at least 00:00:30;00. I started doing this back with FCP 3 (and now have FCP 5). So, I don't know if this is still an issue with the newer version. I do know, however, that working with timecodes below 30 seconds was a pain. Before I learned this trick, I would be able batch capture all of my other clips. Then, the first clip on each tape I would use Capture Now (which seemed to be less finicky with the low time codes).
    I hope this helps.
