A true tale of a llama and a Ze

So, we're moving, and last Monday I had to stop at our old house which is right down the street to put the trash out by the road. I was on my way to work, so as I was leaving the house I put my Zen V in my shirt pocket. As I was taking the second trash barrel out to the road our llama escaped the yard. I spent the next half hour chasing him up and down the street, finally managing to herd him back into our yard so I could go to work. However, when I got back into my car, my Zen was missing! I searched up and down the street to no avail. Very disappointing. My only hope was that I was mistaken and that I had left it at home.
After work, I looked up and down the street again. I still couldn't find it. When I got home, I looked around the house and there was no sign of it. I wrote it off as lost and was thinking about puying a new one, as I liked mine very much.
Fast forward to Saturday. I went to our old house to walk the llama back to our new home, when on the side of the road I saw my Zen! This brought mixed emotions for me. On the one hand, I was happy to find it, but it was sitting in the hot Florida sun all week, and it had rained several times. I picked it up and put it in my pocket, not knowing what to expect.
When I got home I took it out of my pocket and tried to turn it on, thinking that, at best, nothing would happen. To my amazement, it turned on! I've been using it for almost a week and haven't had any problems whatsoever. What a relief!
Kudos to Creative for making such a well-made product.

Well, now, that is quite a story!! But when you fast forwarded to Saturday, I was afraid you were going to tell us you found your Zen in the llama's "waste products."

• Can I sample a layer's "true" color despite its opacity and blend mode?

I'm doing some painting with a lot of layers set to different blend modes. I find that every time I want to paint on one of these layers, I have to go to that layer, set the opacity back to 100, change the blend mode back to "normal" sample the color, then change everything back and continue painting. I realize I can save a swatch for the color, but it can get confusing when you're using subtle color differences on multiple layers. It seems like there should be a modifier key to the tool that samples the layers "true" color discarding opacity and blend mode. Does this exist? Thanks!

Perfect! This is exactly what I'm looking for chris....I don't suppose there's any way to toggle the tool's "current layer/all layers" functionality on the fly so i don't have to go to the tool and select which mode I"m in each time is there? I usually access this tool by just hitting "option" while using a brush. Would be cool if i could set "Option + shift" to use the eyedropper in "current layer" mode. Thanks for the speedy reply!

• Will best buy carry Tales of Xillia 2 and the collector's edition?

Hello, I just learned that the new Tales of Xillia 2 coming to ps3 in august will also have a collector's edition. I know Best Buy carried the first game and am hoping to use my GCU on the collectors if you guys will carry and be taking preorders on this. Thanks!

Hey MuricanDavester,
We have no word on Tales of Xillia 2 at this time, but as we carried the original it does seem a good bet that we will have the sequel. As always, please keep an eye on www.BestBuy.com for any updates, and we will also try to post back here if we get any information for you.

''please stick with your original questions thread about Crystal Report - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/970077 - locking this thread''l
When i unistall and again install a fresh Crystal report for .Net 4.0 Its ok to generate only to pdf option when click to the print icon on crystal report viewer but in another computer it is promting the old fasion like "a dialog with many option" ,But if want to have a only option to generate only to pdf option what should i have to do when my project and crystal report is at Window server 2008 R2,Please suggest a requred answer?

Firefox will update in increments when you use such old versions. The best thing to do is to go to www.getfirefox.com, and download Firefox 19.0.2. This is going to be much faster than updating to 3.0.19, then to 3.6, then 12, then 19 (which is the current process).

• A Tale of Two iPhones and One iTunes

So this little problem has plagued us for years... nearly three to be more precise. We have two iPhones and one PC. Wife syncs contacts with GMail and I sync contacts with Outlook. Funny thing was that the tab for contact sync would not 'stick' with the phone... if I synced mine first, when I plugged hers in it would still be setup for Outlook. Or if I changed it to Google for her and then plugged mine in it wouldn't remember my phone wanted Outlook and would sync with Google. I gave up trying to get it working and setup a seperate profile on the PC for my wife that really was only used for her to sync her phone. The only drawback we could see was we couldn't have a single repository for apps and I had to add music to libraries twice (one for each profile on the computer).
Well, now that we're on the 4S I thought I'd see if iTunes has evolved since 3 years ago when I gave up. I uninstalled all Apple applications and loaded the latest iTunes. The cool part of iOS 5 and the new iTunes is we don't have to connect phones any more So now both phones show up at the same time. I can toggle through all the tabs and see how they differ... different sets of applications are selected, different photo options, music options, etc. EXCEPT the tab with contacts. If I set her phone to google, my phone changes too. I set mine back to Outlook and hers changes to Outlook. We've mixed and matched contacts several times trying to get them to stay in tune and that is a huge PITA to clean up.
I tried the Genius bar. The Genius answer was that we should probably do a restore on the phone. I asked him to help me understand how restoring one phone would solve a problem that existed across 4 phones (two 3G's and two 4S's) and untold versions of iTunes over three years. He just insisted that we probably need to do a restore on the 4S. You know, because that would clearly explain the problem we also had on the 3G. His backup plan was to call Apple support.
So before I submit a ticket to Apple, anyone else able to confirm this limitation? I've checked with my friends and the ones that have iPhones don't sync their contacts anywhere. iCloud will help but we use XP and the PC software requires Vista or better so for now we're still unable to sync our contacts to our PC.
Thanks!
david

On your wife's phone, when you said you've done a restore, was that a restore from backup or as a "new" device? I would suggest deleting the .ipsw file/files on your computer, connecting your wife's phone and restore as "new". When finished, DO NOT SYNC, rather eject the phone and test, verify that all is working correctly. If so, connect her phone & sync her content back.
The .ipsw file is located here, delete all you find, there should only be one:
~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates
If this works, under preferences, devices, in itunes, delete her backups, as they are most likely corrupted.

• A cautionary tale:title 3-d and auto-render

Working along happily. Did a manual save. Double clicked a title 3D clip in my timeline and opened the control panel window to change some text. Phone rang. Had long conversation. Went to lunch.
Came back. The little auto render complete box was showing it's ugly head. Clicked OK. NADA. The titler being open effectively kicks you out of fcp so you cannot accept the finished auto render. FCP effectively locked up. Cannot close title tool.
Had to force quit. Nothing lost because of the save and my autosave vault is set for 5 minutes.
However, I think I'll turn off the auto render.

Yep,
Auto render can mess things up if you are using multi-clip as well.
I leave it off.

• Images now showing true to size in photoshop and loss of quality

Hi,
Not sure if anyone else is having this issue.
I am using Photoshop CC (up to date) on a mac book pro.
For example, if I create a new image say 500px x 500px it shows as 50% the size when the file is listed as being displayed as 100%.
Here is a link to the image file of the creation of the image:
View image: Screen Shot 2014 05 09 at 01 21 17
This is what shows once the image is created:
View image: Screen Shot 2014 05 09 at 01 21 24
As you can see the picture does not display to the eye as 500x500, once saved the image also looses quality.
Does anyone know why this may possibly be happening?
Thanks in advance.

People sometimes assume that the web browser is showing them the actual pixels mapped one to one to display pixels, when in fact it's not.
Be careful what you assume.
A pixel is not a physical unit of measurement. They differ in size. Your Retina pixels are a good bit smaller than those on the displays you may be used to. That's why you paid extra for it.

• How can I display True/False in my dropdownlist as "Yes" and "No"?

Hi All,
I want to bind a dropdownlist to a boolean value (so it's either true or false). I'm particularly interested in using two-way binding to when the user changes from "yes" to "no" the boolean value automatically changes from "true" to "false." But, I want the user to see "yes" and "no" as the options, rather than "true" and "false".
How can I display "yes" and "no" and still take advantage of binding? Or can I not use binding in this circumstance?
-Josh

Solution 1:
In order to display Yes/No for True/False, you may specify labelFunction for the dropdownList.
In MXML:
<s:DropDownList labelFunction="myLabelFunction" />
In actionscript:
private var arr:ArrayCollection = new ArrayCollection(["true","false"]);
private function mylabelFunction(item:Object):String
if(item.toString() == "true")
return "yes";
else return "No";
OR
Solution2:
may be u can try making an array collection like
private var arr:ArrayCollection = new ArrayCollection([{label:"yes",value:"true"},{label:"no",value:"false"}]);
and specify labelField for the dropdownList like
<s:DropDownList labelField="label" dataProvider="{arr}" />

• Searching for a string in an excel file and return true if found.

How can I search for a string in an excel file and return true if found, its location and also a value.

The problem with searching an excel file is that it contains a header. It would be easiest if you just read the file into a LabVIEW array and search the array. This way you can also get the index and the value of the location.

• Emacs and pylookup

Hi,
I've been trying to install pylookup from here: https://github.com/tsgates/pylookup , using README and this http://pygments.org/demo/4772/ sample.
pylookup commands are available, but always 'No matches for "os"' or anything else.
I tried building a base from either python-docs package material
$ ./pylookup.py -u /usr/share/doc/python/html/
or online documentation
$ ./pylookup.py -u http://docs.python.org
but no use. pylookup.db remains empty as it probably should not.
I tried to change the Python version in the makefile (2 to 3 and back)
VER := $(shell python --version 2>&1 | grep -o "[0-9].[0-9].[0-9]")
ZIP := python-${VER}-docs-html.zip
URL := http://docs.python.org/archives/${ZIP}
download:
@if [ ! -e $(ZIP) ] ; then     \
echo "Downloading ${URL}"; \
wget ${URL};               \
unzip ${ZIP};              \
fi
./pylookup.py -u $(ZIP:.zip=)
.PHONY: download
but it did not make any difference. I can't understand, BTW, where the makefile file comes into play. Neither do I see how the thing should know about my browser.
This is the relevant part of my .emacs:
;; Pylookup
(setq pylookup-dir "~/src/emacs-repos/pylookup")
(add-to-list 'load-path pylookup-dir)
(eval-when-compile (require 'pylookup))
(setq pylookup-program
(concat pylookup-dir "/pylookup.py"))
(setq pylookup-db-file
(concat pylookup-dir "/pylookup.db"))
(autoload 'pylookup-lookup "pylookup"
"Lookup SEARCH-TERM in the Python HTML indexes." t)
(autoload 'pylookup-update "pylookup"

I tried to run pylookup.py in pdb, on the local doc source:
./pylookup.py -u /usr/share/doc/python/html/
It ran fine until this statement: parser.feed(index), line 227. No exceptions raised (at least I didn't catch any); looks like it silently refused to dump the index into pylookup.db.
I suspect Python 3 incompatibility (at least Python 2.7 examples from my crash course in debugging took some toll, and it wasn't always syntax). Unfortunately, my expertise stops at line 227 .
pylookup.py, exactly as debugged:
#!/usr/bin/env python
Pylookup is to lookup entries from python documentation, especially within
emacs. Pylookup adopts most of ideas from haddoc, lovely toolkit by Martin
Blais.
(usage)
./pylookup.py -l ljust
./pylookup.py -u http://docs.python.org

Apple Maps - Please reconsider and include Google Maps. As a long time Apple customer, I am disappointed iOS would regress the system and inconvenience millions because of a vendetta that should never hinder users. Not only does the transit feature I used religiously no longer exist, but clicking on an address in a website now directs users to a poor Google Maps interface. I am surprised to see such a effortless update from a company squatting on the resources to make a change its customers are asking for.

Apple has documented an API to provide add-ons to the Maps app in the iOS 6 SDK, so that such add-ons are possible is absolutely not a guess that the capability is there. As to whether someone will indeed develop an add-on for any given transit system, that would be a guess, yes, but at a couple of companies at least have already announced plans to do so.
In select cities and areas - so now I'm going from being able to supply this information myself to either wait for someone to supply an app or write an app myself... This is not feature progression but feature regression. Adding transit times or a specific overlay should not have to be something you need to do through code via an API. So no dice... Your guess that we will see better transit information is just that - a guess, nothing else.
If you don't agree with that editorial, you are certainly free to do so. I provided the link as food for thought for those who have been questioning Apples' decision to drop Google's maps from iOS. Whether or not you agree with Brad's analysis or that of anyone else is up to you.
But on that central issue the editorial fails - it's is not the true tale of why Apple made their move and therefore useless even as "food for thought" (because it's guesswork).

• Convert smart quotes and other high ascii characters to HTML

I'd like to set up Dreamweaver CS4 Mac to automatically convert smart quotes and other high ASCII characters (m-dashes, accent marks, etc.) pasted from MS Word into HTML code. Dreamweaver 8 used to do this by default, but I can't find a way to set up a similar auto-conversion in CS 4. Is this possible? If not, it really should be a preference option. I code a lot of HTML emails and it is very time consuming to convert every curly quote and dash.
Thanks,

I too am having a related problem with Dreamweaver CS5 (running under Windows XP), having just upgraded from CS4 (which works fine for me) this week.
In my case, I like to convert to typographic quotes etc. in my text editor, where I can use macros I've written to speed the conversion process. So my preferred method is to key in typographic letters & symbols by hand (using ALT + ASCII key codes typed in on the numeric keypad) in my text editor, and then I copy and paste my *plain* ASCII text (no formatting other than line feeds & carriage returns) into DW's DESIGN view. DW displays my high-ASCII characters just fine in DESIGN view, and writes the proper HTML code for the character into the source code (which is where I mostly work in DW).
I've been doing it this way for years (first with GoLive, and then with DW CS4) and never encountered any problems until this week, when I upgraded to DW CS5.
But the problem I'm having may be somewhat different than what others have complained of here.
In my case, some high-ASCII (above 128) characters convert to HTML just fine, while others do not.
E.g., en and em dashes in my cut-and-paste text show as such in DESIGN mode, and the right entries
–
—
turn up in the source code. Same is true for the ampersand
&
and the copyright symbol
©
and for such foreign letters as the e with acute accent (ALT+0233)
é
What does NOT display or code correctly are the typographic quotes. E.g., when I paste in (or special paste; it doesn't seem to make any difference which I use for this) text with typographic double quotes (ALT+0147 for open quote mark and ALT+0148 for close quote mark), which should appear in source code as
“[...]”
DW strips out the ASCII encoding, displaying the inch marks in DESIGN mode, and putting this
"[...]"
in my source code.
The typographic apostrophe (ALT+0146) is treated differently still. The text I copy & paste into DW should appear as
[...]’[...]
in the source code, but instead I get the foot mark (both in DESIGN and CODE views):
I've tried adjusting the various DW settings for "encoding"
MODIFY > PAGE PROPERTIES > TITLE/ENCODING > Encoding:
and for fonts
EDIT > PREFERENCES > FONTS
but switching from "Unicode (UTF-8)" to "Western European" hasn't solved the problem (probably because in my case many of the higher ASCII characters convert just fine). So I don't think it's the encoding scheme I use that's the problem.
Whatever the problem is, it's caused me enough headaches and time lost troubleshooting that I'm planning to revert to CS4 as soon as I post this.
