A valid DVD drive not found (error -70012)

Hi.
I get this message when I try to insert a DVD or start the DVD Player app:
'The was an initialization error: A valid DVD drive could not be found [-70012]'
It won't allow DVD to be insert, they just kind of hit a buffer. There seems to be no power to the DVD drive.
Just happened one day.
Macbook Pro running 10.6.8
Any ideas?
I'd try to get an appt at an Apple Store near me but they are all booked up!!
Thanks

I can only think of two possible reasons. 1. The optical drive is dead. 2. The DVD you put in for some reason went in at an incorrect angle, and jammed something in the drive mechanism.
If you buy this reasoning, you could try to wiggle the DVD. I would use the edge of another cd, inserted about half an inch (one cm) till it touches the one inside, and see if you can get some movement up and down of the one inside.
Needless to say you would be doing this at the risk of further damaging the optical drive as well as the DVD.

Sounds like a problem with the Optical Drive, I find them far too short lived in OSX anyway!???

  • "valid dvd driver not found"

I have a Powerbook G4 12"--has always worked without problem.
However, this am tried to play DVD--got the error message "valid DVD drive not found". No driver seen in system profiler.
There is no CD or DVD stuck.
Have gone through the workarounds suggested in discussions--open firmware ejects etc...
Has anyone found a solution other than paying $500 to replace the drive?
    Many thanks

First see if the issue is user or system related. Go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Accounts and add an administrator account, and log into it after logging out from the Apple menu.
If that doesn't work, try locating a preference in the System/Library or Hard Drive -> Library for com.apple.dvdplayer and removing it. Same for cache files.
If it still doesn't work, try VideoLan Client:

  • Initialization error-valid dvd drive not found-no icons, no disk eject

My mac mini is giving me a hard time. Actually, ever since I got it over 5 years ago, it's been a bit of a headache with the DVD/CD drive.
I've even had the drive changed once under warranty. Anyway, I'm trying to upgrade to OSX 10.6.3. For that, I need to put the CD into the drive.
Right now I have my start up disk in the drive as I tried to do some repairs to the disk before I installed the new OS.
But as in the past, my disk is now stuck in the drive. There is no icon of the CD on my desktop. My DVD player program says that no valid DVD drive has been found. I've tried every way I know to eject the disk as this has happened to me before. I've reset the SMC by shuting down, unpluging the power and other cables. Waiting 15 seconds and even a few hours to see if it made a difference. Plugged it all back in and turned it on. The CD whirls around in there as I can hear it, but then nothing. No icons, no nothing. It's as if I don't even have a CD/DVD dirve on the computer at all. I've tried starting up holding the mouse button down before start up, after start up, durring start up... nothing. I've tried starting up from the disk by pressing C. Momentarily (a fraction of a second)I get a little question mark where the grey apple is supposed to appear but then the grey apple appears and the computer starts up from the hard drive and not the disk. I've even zaped the PRAM a few times for good measure. I just spent $20 on Snow Leopard to install it. I really don't want go to the repair shop again and spend more money on something I already fixed once. Any suggestions or further tips would be very welcome and appreciated.

  • Force eject: Initialization error [-70012] Valid DVD drive not found

Back in December I had an issue with a DVD from NEtflix that was sucked into the black hole of my G4.
No force eject protocol worked, must have tried at least 1/2 dozen.
Come to find out, my drive works fine with some DVD/CD and not with others.
The one fix on the web that works is an obscure one that I found.
Restart computer and then insert a credit card into the drive slot, slightly putting pressure upon the spinning disc while pushing the eject or track pad until eject initializes.
So, while I can get the disks out my question is: Why do newer DVD/CDs fail to initialize within my drive...
is it an outdated optical thing?

Does the drive make any noise during power up? You may have had a drive fail completely. One thing to do is check System Profiler and look at the ATA info under Hardware and see if it finds the drive. If it is not found there, the CPU is not seeing the drive and the drive may be kaput.
You should be able to find information on ifixit, like at
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-PowerBook-G4-Titanium-DVI-Optical- Drive/100/1
to see how to get the optical out. There may be instructions on getting a disc out of a failed drive there, or you may have to do a Google search for instructions, as I know they are out there and relatively simple to handle.

  • Windows 7 install stops at "CD/DVD driver not found"

When trying to install Windows 7 with boot camp, all goes well until it stops and gives me the "CD/DVD driver not found". I have a mid 2010 Mac Pro with a 500 GB SSD drive. I have burned a DVD at 1X from a iso file.
    Thanks

Can you verify the MD5/SHA1 of the DVD with the ISO using OS X 'openssl md5' or the M$ FCIV tool? The source of your ISO should be able to provide MD5/SHA1.
    OS X Example
    openssl md5 ~/Desktop/GRMCPRXVOL_EN_DVD.cdr
    MD5(/Users/MyName/Desktop/GRMCPRXVOL_EN_DVD.cdr)= 977f4f0f1400be91855789213e07b031
    Windows FCIV example
    D:\>C:\"Program Files (x86)"\FCIV\fciv
// File Checksum Integrity Verifier version 2.05.
    Usage:  fciv.exe [Commands] <Options>
    Commands: ( Default -add )

  • Why do I get a boot drive not found error only when laptop lid has been closed?

    I've got a HP Mini 210 P/Number: VX818EA with Windows 7 Starter.
It works fine when turning on after shutdown, but when I've put it to sleep by closing the lid it won't 'wake up', and I get a blank screen. On restarting the computer I get a 'boot drive not found' error, (3F0) which can be resolved by following the steps on this page: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01443463&tmp_task=solveCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc...
I've run disk check etc as suggested on that link, no errors are found, but nothing seems to resolve the problem more than temporarily. Seems odd that this only happens if I close the lid (sleep mode with the lid up is fine, doesn't crash the computer).
    Can anyone advise?
    Thanks

    Hello,
Very strange, can you go to BIOS and reset the setting " By Default " ?. How did you check the disk ?
This is an unusual probleme Hp Mini 210 . And notice me after your reset the bios settings.

  • [Athlon64] Serial ATA Drive Not found Error on bootup ATI Radeon RS480M2-IL

MSI "RS480M2-IL" ATI Radeon XPRESS 200 Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket 939
I have just built an Athlon 64 system using the motherboard stated above. When I boot the system up, I get an error message stating that the system can not boot up from the CD 95% of the time.  I then use Ctrl-Alt-Del and the system boots up just fine.  I have the BIOS set to search the hard disk first for boot up before looking at the CDROM and I still get this error. I believe it can not find the hard drive due to timing or what???
We did load the MS XP 64 bit operating system at first, but we found that there were ot enough drivers available. We then did a quick format and loaded the the MS XP Pro operating system after that.  Everything works fine except for this error message we get 95% of the time on bootup. We are using a serial ATA 80 GB Western Digital Hard drive and a Lite-On dual layer DVD burner(IDE).
    Power supply is a Macron

    Hi,
until I was using BIOS 3.2, the system works very fine. After upgrading to BIOS 3.3, my system usually did not boot after cold restart (button) but then after warm restart (ctrl-alt-del) always started. It was not usable because I use scheduled starting of PC to record TV programs. Every cold restart SATA boot drive boot was not found but after warm restart everything OK. So I reflashed back bios 3.2 and the system works perfectly again.
    Any one similar experience?
p.s. With 3.2 BIOS I am very satisfied with this motherboard and its stability. But not sure about future upgrading BIOS :-(

  • Satellite Pro A210 DVD Drive not working - error code 39

    Hi All
My Satellite Pro A210 dvd drive is not loading.
When I looked into it it showed an error code 39.
I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it but it's still not working.
    Any ideas?

    Hi
From my knowledge the error message 39 appears if the CD/DVD drive is not visible in the My Computer.
    You can try this workaround:
Go to device manager and delete the CD/DVD drive from the device list.
Then go to registry (regedit) and remove the upper and lower filters from the key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Control\Class\ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Then reboot the unit and test it again
    I think this should help!
