A very usable portrait mode for N900!

I just found this, some of you probably already know about it.
Download ShortcutD  from the maemo repo, then go to settings and ShortcutD. In there you can use camera button or proximity sensor (i originally set caera button but found proximity sensor better), and from the list select 'ctrl+shift+r' (portrait). Doesn't work on desktop (thankfully) but it does elsewhere - conversations, images, app manager etc. Just cover the proximity sensor and it says 'rotation toggled' and you can tilt the phone to portrait. Very, very nice. Shame it doesn't affect the virtual keyboard for SMS though.
Enjoy! And if you like it, kudos!

i think that rotatedaemon was the only program that allowed a qwerty kb in the portrait mode for sms.

  • Portrait Mode For Nokia N900

Unfortunately for some reasons I am not getting full satisfaction from my Nokia N900.
    Missing MMS,
    Quick Battery Drain,
    Landscape Mode all times,
    Unsupported by OVI,
Fully not completable with Nokia PC Suite,
I understand it's a kind of internet tablet. May be for this reason this phone have only landscape mode. But it does not mean that I shall use this phone only for surfing Internet all the way. I think Nokia should look into this matter and enable Portrait mode. In fact landscape mode is not comfortable all the times specially we bring out the phone from trouser's pocket and turn the phone landscape physically and start operation !!
These are some basic points. I believe there are also lots of issues with this phone. But as a Nokia addict I expected more from this device. Now I am badly waiting for change this device :-(
    Thanks to all !!!
    Nokia N8

There is a portrait mode SMS in development over at Maemo.org. Not sure how Nokia plan to address portrait mode in the future.
But it's been stated by Nokea/Maemo that they have no intention in bringing "Native MMS" to the N900. Instead they are working closely with Frals (the creator of fMMS) to make sure his app integrates seamlessly with the O/S.
The post can be viewed here: Statement on native MMS
Personally I think Frals has done an awesome job and I've finally got the hang of using fMMS.
Ovi is currently in beta. (There's enough talk about it on here).
N-Series PC Suite has a better compatibility than Ovi Suite at present.
And the battery drain will be fixed in the next firmware update (PR1.2), which is imminent.

  • N900 PORTRAIT MODE FOR TEXTING

will this support texting in portrait mode i just got one and like it very much but hate the fact you cant text in portrait mode
If  i have helped at all a click on the white star below would be nice thanks.
    Now using the Lumia 1520

My previous phone was the N97.. I bought it the day it was released in the UK (pre-order in the Nokia store in London.. happy days!)
Before that, my phone was the Nokia 7710.. I had that since 2004.. Not only was it the first touch screen phone from Nokia, but it was the only Series90 handset they released.. It was FANTASTIC.. It had a high res screen that was only beaten on the E90 and then the 5800/N97.. superb piece of kit..
The best thing about it, it was landscape format.. Going back to a candy bar with the N97 was a shock to the system, but at least it worked in landscape too.. Coming back to landscape mode with the N900 feels comfortable again, but I do understand how one handed operation is important.
The screen on the N900, although not multi-touch, is wicked accurate.. The problem is whether a cramped portrait mode keyboard can cope with the relatively large surface area of say a thumb pressing the screen.. something that is always more optimally suited to a screen technology that registers the shape of a screen press, not just the location..
I'm interested to know how the X6 works in portrait mode, see how Nokia are deailng with a different screen tech

  • Portrait Mode for SmS after PR 1.2 !

I have seen some people mentioning here, that even after PR 1.2 portrait mode is not there especially for SmS? Any confirmation ?

It's useless anyway when you have a physical keyboard. You can have portrait mode but as soon as you open a conversation it goes back to tablet mode.

  • Rotate display for portrait mode?

I'd like to rotate the display orientation on my 15" MBP so that I can read documents in portrait mode while holding the laptop sideways. I found some tips instructing me to hold the option key down while selecting the displays pane in system preferences but that doesn't seem to work.
I found SMSRotateD which is a little demo that rotates the display using the sudden motion sensor:
    http://www.osxbook.com/software/sms/smsrotated/
It does successfully rotate the display 90 degrees, but it works erratically and won't stay in one orientation for long. I'd rather do this without the SMS. Can anyone tell me how?

I do though hesitate to rotate the whole body of the machine. Functioning vertically may not be the best of things to do. At least back 10 years ago, and I don't know if it is true now, shifting the drive from the position it was formatted in relative to gravity to a different one for use without reformatting it can shorten the length of the hard drive. This was the case with the drives on some PowerMac 6500s which were formatted vertically and placed horizontally elsewhere.
Whether or not you can do that with notebook drives regularly, remains to be seen. I'd say it would be better to get an external display that supports the rotation.

  • How can I save the window size so that when I restart Firefox the size of the window is appropriate for my portrait mode monitor?

I have a 2 monitor setup with my second monitor in portrait mode. Whenever I start Firefox (on my 2nd screen where I always open it) I always have to resize the window so it goes down to show more info. I cannot figure out how to reset any type of default window size for the height and width parameters.

    Hi,
From your post, I assume you are creating WebHelp output.
You  need to create a window for the help in the Project Set-up pod. Then,  you need to make sure you call the output so that the window is used.  See http://www.grainge.org/pages/authoring/calling_webhelp/calling_webhelp.htm.  This article on Peter's site give you an overview over the  possibilities of calling context sensitivive webhelp and also tells you  how to specify the needed window. Also, the installation directory of  RoboHelp 8 contains a directory called CSH API. In there are example  API's your developer can use to call the help.

  • Change resolution for portrait mode.

    Hello guys!
I've met a problem about resolution aspect ratio on my Mac. Please help.
Mac: Mac Book Air 2013-Mid (11 inches, Core i5, 4GB RAM, 256GB SSD)
    OS: Mavericks (10.9.3)
Monitor: GeChic On-Lap 1302 for Mac (using MiniDisplayPort cable.)
    Phenomenon:
In monitor setting screen, I rotated 270 or 90 degrees to use this monitor as portrait mode. But it displays weird as the photo below.
My MBA tries to display it as landscape mode, and there are big black dead space on upper and lower.
I just want it to display portrait mode without the dead spaces.
I tried some things so far as below to research.
    1) SMC reset == No effect
    2) Cram shell mode (use this external monitor as primary and disable Mac's own monitor) == Displays Nice without dead space. (But it can't be a solution because I need to use Mac's own monitor.)
    3) In Apple store, use Mountain Lion with network boot == Displays Nice as Dual monitor.
    4) In Apple store, use other Mac Book Air 2013-Mid (13 inches) with Yosemite == Same phenomenon.
    5) Cabling with MiniDP to VGA converter and monitor's VGA cable == Displays nice. (But I don't want to use VGA cable because of image quality..)
    6) In display setting screen, click "Resolution: scaled" radio button with "Option" key == No properly resolutions isn't shown.
    7) In "Mission Control" setting screen, check off "Displays have separate Spaces" == No effect.
Today, I brought it to Apple store and discussed with Apple technician, but we couldn't solve this issue at last.
Are there anyone who met same problem? and solved? If so, please give any advices. Anything (such like Command line or any other thing) is OK.
    Thanks!

  • Author for portrait mode?

I plan to hang a 42" LCD in the front window of my coffeehouse to promote our live jazz nights, gourmet coffee specials, and the like. I'd like to use Keynote but am unclear of any easy way to author for an LCD monitor hanging in a portrait mode (i.e rotated 90 degrees clockwise from normal.)
Any ideas on how to do this other than just do everything in keynote sideways?
    G5 2x1.8 & 13" MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

What machine will drive the LCD? In OS X 10.4, many machines have an option in the System Preferences, in Displays, to rotate the display. What I would suggest doing is setting up your Keynote presentation at the horizontal and vertical dimensions that it will actually be displayed in (once the LCD is rotated), and create/edit the presentation in that fashion. When it comes to show the presentation, on the machine that drives the LCD go into the System Preferences, in Displays, and set the display to rotate 90 degrees.

  • Portrait mode format for photos in iPhoto books?

Attenton Apple Execs (Jonathan Ive in particular) - How about creating at least ONE Book format that incorporates portrait mode (vertical) photos well?  This question was put out to Apple in discussions in 2010 and archived.  In 2014 - still no such format!
Where is Apple's "user experience" crew when we need them?
You guys, with iPhones and iPads, have moved the world to a much more portrait mode still and video orientation.
Can we please, please, please .... have an accomodating Book Format in iPhoto? I know you are really proud of the face recognition and other sophisticated featurs in recent editions of iPhoto, but we poor users are still without a basic book capability.
Ideally, all the existing formats could be expanded with a few pages to accomodate vertical images better.
    Wow us....with "one more thing!"

Sorry to inform you but Jonathan Ive is not here - no Apple exects are here. In face Apple is not here. As you are aware this is totally a user to user assistance forum manned only by volenteer users

  • N8 Browser, portrait mode qwerty keyboard.

    Hello,
Is nokia going to improve the browser on the N8? it's horrible compared to the droids and the iOS one. Also, will a portrait mode qwerty keyboard be added? I know the screen is not very wide, dunno if it would fit.
I currently have the 5800, and I like it, was thinking about upgrading but if the browser is still a pain....Does the N8 have the same music quality as the 5800? thats what is important for me since I use it as a mp3 player alot.

    psychomania wrote:
Nokia has recently stated that the N8 will be receiving a new improved browser and portrait qwerty. Both are expected to arrive in the first quarter of next year but some say the browser may arrive this year. Many other features and improvements are planned too.
Through headphone I personally think the N8's sound quality is better than the 5800's, it can also be louder. Though the phone's speakers the 5800 is better as it has stereo speakers, although the N8's single speaker is still good compared to many phones.
and they will be adding faster switching from one homescreen to another, kind of like on the n900, where the homescreens follow your finger .(the same thing on androids like on your htc desite psychomania).

  • IBOOKS AUTHOR PORTRAIT MODE HELP PLEASE

    Hi All
I wonder if anyone can help and advise me on a problem
i have a page created in ibooks author
it contains graphics, text and text boxes with a picture frame and a gradient fill inside; however when I switch from landscape mode to portrait mode the text box I created that needs to be after all the text created is either above the text or hidden behind a scrollable blue line with  up and down arrows.
this is really anoying me and can't see how to fix the problem
    Can you help and advise
    Thanks for your time
    Andy

    Andy:
Here's the deal - often enough, a certain layout subtlety (defined as 'do this to do that') is found to be predicated on one or more specific templates.
In order to debug an issue, that if solved relies on a template that the book in question doesn't use, the process can mean that there is no direct path towards xyz solution...only that the issue is spotlighted.
This can mean the issue is compounded by the original choice of template, which in turns mean that the solution is to change templates and most likely start over.
I don't know for a fact that your issue would be rectified by changing templates, and I'm not up for doing all the work to (a) find the proper template and (b) throughly refit your content to test the voracity of that template's ability to solve this one issue, sorry. Keep in mind there may be a very direct/simple solution with your book as-is...only by debugging it would you know
If you haven't seen it, look over this resource for basics that may apply in any case:

  • Portrait Mode Lock / Orientation Sensor

If anyone from Apple is reading this, I have a suggestion for improving the iPhone user interface.
My wife and I are relatively new to our iPhones.  I frequently use the orientation sensor for photos, safari, email and other apps so that I can switch the display from landscape to portrait mode by tilting the phone to the appropriate orientation.  My wife saw me doing this and noted that her iPhone, identical to mine (4s) doesn't do that, and indeed, on examining it, it didn't.  I carefully went through the Settings dialog and the Settings|General dialog and any promising looking page below these and found nothing.  I assumed that the orientation sensor was broken, and we called up Verizon, from whom we bought our phones.
The (very helpful!) tech person at our local Verizon store had to look this one up, and it took him some time, but he finally located a software switch, accessible by double-tapping the home button - a "Portrait Mode Lock".
This is an OK location for such a control, along with a general volume control, but this switch should also be available from the Settings menu, along with brightness and other hardware-specific switches.  This is, after all a "hardware setting" and the Settings page is the logical place to look for it.  I would strongly suggest that whether or not this switch is left on the Phone Favorites line, it should be available from somewhere in the Settings page heirarchy.

No one from Apple is reading this forum, its just a user forum like you and I.
You can send them a feedback here:

  • N8 HDMI only works in portrait mode, gets disconne...

Hi. Like the title states, my Nokia N8 HDMI works as expected in portrait mode but when I turn the phone sideways (like when I want to play Angry Birds) it immediately gets disconnected. Even the small "HDMI" logo in the top right corner disappears.
I initially thought it was because the connector was loose so I tried holding it firmly while turning the phone. Same results. Then I tried detach/reattach the cable in landscape mode - no response from the phone at all.
If I switch back to portrait mode the HDMI connection consistently and automatically gets restored without having to detach/reattach the cable.
Is this just a simple setting I need to change in the phone system, or is it a hardware defect? Any help you guys can provide will be very appreciated.

I don't have HDMI cable for my N8 but judging from a bot of googling i did, the thing should work for landscape HDMI. You may have a software problem of an issue with the accelerometer. Are you having issues with any other landscape apps?
You may have to get the phone re-flashed at a nokia care point.
Sorry i couldnt be more helpful

  • Fixed layout ePub page turn not working in portrait mode

    Hello all,
First time poster here. I created a childrens book, full color ePub from the Apple 3.1 ePub template. Everything sems to work great in general.  But I wanted the book to be in portrait mode only to get the most out of the graphics. I have the package.opf file set for portrait mode, which shows just one page (correctly), but when turning pages the cool page turn animation does not work when testing on my iPhone5 and an iPad2.  Pages just slide left or right.  But when I change the opf to allow landscape mode, when testing on iDevices, it shows two pages at a time in any mode and the page turn effect works perfectly.  Any way to get the page turn animation to work on just a single page in Portrait mode? To add to it I have an ePub example book from a non-Apple publisher that defaults to single page portrait, and is mostly text (so I'm not sure if its fixed layout or not), and the single page portrait mode allows the page turn animation to work perfectly.
    Thanks all!
    EDL

The small caps are wrong in Source Sans Regular. This are not correct small caps . This seams to be missing in the font.
But in italic style you will find correct small caps. They only work in InDesign not in ePub.
And if you look in my images (first from InDesign, second from Radium - iBooks looks the same) you can see many difference between InDesign and ePub.
Note the word "pfiffig", the I at the beginning of "Igor" in second paragraph and the "a" in the italic paragraph.
    This is very frustrating!

  • Landscape and portrait mode

My iPad is slow between rotating from landscape o portrait mode at the home screen. In apps though it is very fast. Anybody know why? It hasn't always been like this

    Hi,
    Try restarting your iPad.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPad. To turn iPad back on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears.
See if that made a difference.
If not, you may have an app that needs "force quitting" ...
Try this... Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPad for a few seconds until a red slider appears, then press and hold the Home button until the application quits.
Try again. If it's still slow, connect your iPad to your computer, launch iTunes. Check available storage at the bottom of the iTunes window. Might be a good idea to have at least 10% free space available.
